Lots of People You Want to Know Better
I was tagged by @arendaes, @yunessa, and @dujour13!
Three ships:
I'm going for canon ships! Even if I love my OCs, I don't want anyone to feel left out!
Clarice Starling/Hannibal Lecter - NOT THE TV SERIES!! Regardless of Hannigram aside, Clarice would probably stab TV!Hannibal five thousand times for the shit he pulled on every woman in that damn show. But in the books and in the movies? Their angst an UST is absolutely fantastic and treating down the Good Girl trope in Hannibal the novel is excellent in it's problematic glory.
Dispater/Erecura - Pathfinder did the funniest damn thing and made a goddamn Hades/Persephone love story. No, listen. Dispater is the Roman adaption of Hades. Erecura was an association for Proserpina, the Roman adaption for Persephone. They meet through work after Erecura is a goddamn badass and gets booted to hell, have a casual romance, and get married, and he is absolutely smitten with her. This isn't head canon, Paizo goes 'HE SINCERELY LOVES HIS WIFE'.
Nicole Haught/Waverly Earp - No, Wynonna and Doc Holliday were not the main romantic ship. It was Nicole and Waverly. It was love that began with flirting and grew, and grew, Nicole and Waverly overcame so goddamn much together and was the glue that kept everyone sane. Also, they were hot. Really hot. Oh my gosh were they hot.
Last Song:
RIELL - Wrecking Ball (Original Lyrics)
Last Movie:
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once - My second time seeing it but I wanted to watch it with my dad. The vibe fits.
Currently Reading:
Authority – Jeff VanderMeer
This is the toughest book in the Area X series, with Annihilation being the most accessible (Acceptance is a pretty accessible read but you need to get through Authority to not get overly lost). However, it's a great audiobook and it has two of the most horrific moments I've read in a while. The plot is good, but the way how it's written means you need to pay attention, and reading along with audio is absolutely worth it.
Currently Watching:
I've got so many series, but I'm trying some older TV series. Person of Interest has been my favorite so far due to Michael Emerson being opposite of what he is in Evil.
Currently Eating:
Nothing at the moment, but dinner should be pasta.
Currently Craving:
Jeans and cheesecake.
Favorite Color:
Purple
Favorite Flavor:
Lavender has recently become my favorite.
Current Obsession:
Baldur's Gate 3, though WotR isn't too far behind.
Last thing I googled:
'middle ages trapping'
Favorite season:
Mid-Fall, when the weather is nice and not ruining my skin, when it's not too cold, and there's a few fun holidays making the time go quicker!
Skill I’d like to learn:
I'd love to get back into painting and one day I want to take an anatomy class for drawing so I can do something other than portrait.
Best advice:
"Compete against yourself, not against others."
I am tagging (with no pressure!) - @chaosteddybear, @cassynite, @amatres, @tenmillionbees, @serenbach86 - Though if you've already done this, I wouldn't mind a link to see!

Forever my wife
Just my take on how the WayHaught wedding could’ve turned out. I wrote this before the airing of episode 4x12, so expect it to be different.
It’s here. Their weeding day has finally arrived. Nicole has been smiling her brightest smile all morning. She can’t believe she is finally getting married to the love of her life, her Angel, the Guardian of her heart. Waverly Earp. Her wife. Wow... that sounds so good.
She is all dressed up and almost ready for the ceremony, thanks to Rachel. She is wearing a beautiful maroon suit with a very simple and natural-looking makeup. It was Rachel’s idea, and she absolutely loves the result. As for Waverly, she has Wynonna to help her get ready. Obviously. Part of Nicole wishes she could just peek at them, sure they must be having a lot of fun right now. But she and Waverly agreed their wedding looks should be a surprise, so she is getting ready in the barn, while Waverly is in their room in the Homestead.
“Alright, there you go!” Rachel exclaims when she’s done with Nicole’s hair. “What do you think?”
Rachel curled her beautiful red hair, and clipped it backwards on one side, so that it is falling nicely on her right shoulder.
“Wow...” Nicole stares in awe at her figure in the mirror.
“I know. I’m pretty proud of my work too.” Rachel says with a proud smirk.
Nicole chuckles lightly at that, and then she turns to face her. “Thank you.”
Rachel smiles brightly at her, moving her hand up to fix a lock of Nicole’s hair. “I’m... I’m gonna go check on Waves. See if Wynonna needs any help...”
“Okay.”
When Rachel leaves, Nicole moves to sit on Wynonna’s bed. Closing her eyes, she tries to recall all of the milestones that led them here. Their first meeting at Shorty’s... Waverly Earp smiling at her from her front porch... her heart shattering when Waverly told her they should’ve been just friends, and all its pieces coming back together the minute Waverly kissed her in Nedley’s office... their first time, their big fight, all of the times they’d lost and found each other over the years... her regret of not having said yes right away... her hope slowly fading away in those 18 months alone... what they did on the stairs, and on the kitchen floor, and in the barn this morning... What a ride they had, huh?
That’s what she said. She can imagine Wynonna saying to her. The thought makes her smile. That woman is a real sucker for a dirty joke. And she’s part of their journey too. Who would’ve thought they could become best friends. And yet, here they are. It’s crazy how close they’ve become.
Right as she’s thinking about that, Nicole is brought back to reality by the sound of knocking on the front door. Speaking of the devil...
“May I come in? Please, tell me you’re not naked...” Wynonna asks as she walks in with a hand covering her eyes.
“Actually, I’m lying completely naked on your bed right now.” Nicole jokes.
“I’d rather not think about what you did on my bed this morning...” Wynonna says lowering her hand.
“Excuse me?!” How the hell does she know about their morning... exchange of love.
“Poor innocent Jeremy told me about it. Poor soul, I think you traumatized him for life...” she mocks her.
Nicole shakes her head in disbelief. “Just come here, and sit with me, Earp.” She invites her patting at the space beside her on the mattress.
“Huh uh, no way. I’m never touching that bed again.”
“We didn’t even do it on the bed!” Nicole yells before she can realize what she is actually saying.
“Yep. I’m burning this whole barn to the ground tonight.” Wynonna states in a joking tone before going to sit on the bed near Nicole.
When she was settled, Nicole smiled her beautiful bright smile at her, and Wynonna noticed her eyes were sparkling with tears.
“You okay, Haught?”
“I’m getting married to Waverly Earp today...” she says as if that could answer Wynonna’s question.
“You’d better.”
Nicole chuckles lightly at that, and then she asks: “how is she?”
“She’s ready.” Somehow Wynonna knows exactly what Nicole needed to hear. “Oh, I almost forgot. I got you something” She exclaims a moment later, taking a necklace from her dress, in the space right over her boob. “No pockets.” She explains with a shrug when Nicole laughs lightly at her. Same old Wynonna.
“Please tell me it’s not a boner necklace...” Nicole jokes.
“Damn it! Now I’m mad I didn’t think of that!”
That makes Nicole laugh again. And in that moment, she realizes the tears that once threatened to fall are now completely gone. Wynonna did it again. It crazy how this woman can make it all go away with just one joke.
“But seriously... here.” Wynonna says as she hands over the necklace to Nicole.
Nicole takes it and lays it on the palm of her hand, so she can study the pendant. It’s the shape of a heart, and inside it there are two small figures, two girls sitting on its outline as if the pendant was a swing. On the outline of the heart, then, there are two small inscriptions: always my sister / forever my friend. Nicole reads them, and then turns to look at Wynonna in shock. That’s definitely not the gift she was expecting to get from “miss everything’s a joke to me”.
“Waverly gave it to me for my eighteenth birthday, right before I left Purgatory... She wanted me to know that I’d always have a home here if I wanted to come back. I always have it with me. Even if I’m not wearing it. It’s like my lucky charm. Which is kind of stupid considering all the troubles I got in in my life...”
“Wynonna, I...” Nicole’s at a loss of words. No one’s ever given her something that was so special to them.
“You’re gonna be my sister now, right?” she says matter-of-factly, and Nicole can feel herself getting all emotional again.
“I’ve never had a sister…” She states, mimicking what Wynonna had told her a little less than two years ago. I’ve never had a best friend.
“You do now.” Wynonna states in all seriousness as she fights back the tears blurring her eyes. “A pretty messed up one, but...” she starts to joke, but Nicole interrupts her.
“She’s perfect that way.” She says taking hold of Wynonna’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze.
They stay like that for a moment, neither one breaking the peaceful silence that fell upon them. Nicole can’t take her eyes off the necklace. Waverly gave it to Wynonna, and now Wynonna is giving it to her. It’s not just a promise to be friends and sisters forever, it’s also a way for Wynonna to say “Waverly’s the most precious thing that I have, and now she’s yours to protect and love”. The idea makes her even more emotional, but if she cries now, she’ll ruin all her makeup, and it took Rachel half an hour to put it on. So she takes a deep breath to force back the tears, and then she gets up and turns to face Wynonna.
“Help me put it on?” She asks, holding out the necklace for Wynonna to take.
A tear falls down Wynonna’s cheek as she smiles at her friend. She wipes it away quickly with the back of her hand, and then, she gets up grabbing the necklace. As she is fastening it, they hear a knock on the door. It’s Rachel. In a very Wynonna-fashion she does not wait for an answer before walking in. She is here to let them know everyone’s ready, and they’re just waiting for the two of them. All of a sudden Nicole feels like she can’t breathe. It’s happening. It’s time. OMG. Her heart is racing uncontrollably, and she thinks she might get sick. That, of course, does not go unnoticed on Wynonna, who puts her hand on Nicole’s shoulder, giving it an encouraging squeeze.
“C’mon, Haught. You’ve waited long enough. Now you get to be happy.” She smiles lovingly at her friend. Best friend. God, she’s so happy for her right now. She finally gets to be happily married to the love of her life. It’s what she deserves.
When she feels Nicole is breathing somewhat steadily again, she offers up her arm for her to lean on as they walk out. With a deep breath, Nicole puts her hand on Wynonna’s arm, and she lets her friend lead her out of the barn, with Rachel in tow. It’s a beautiful sunny day, and she can smell the perfumes of a thousand flowers, and the green grass around the Homestead is glowing bright in the summer sun. Nicole takes a look at the guests waiting for them by their seats. It’s not many people, it’s true, but all the ones who matter are here. Jeremy, Doc, Nedley, Billy, Mercedes… wait. No way! No! She turns towards Wynonna in shock.
“Are you serious right now?!” she exclaims in disbelief.
“Do you know someone else who can officiate your wedding?!”
“Anyone but Bunny!”
“Listen, sheriff, she’s who I found, okay? Do you wanna get married or what?”
“You’re gonna be the death of me, Earp…”
“Oh, please, your life would be so boring without me.”
“I’m marrying your sister, I can think of a few ways to entertain myself…” she objects with a smirk.
Their banter is interrupted by Nedley clearing his throat to get their attention. “Ladies…”
Both turn to look at him. Nicole can instantly feel the tears forming in her eyes. He’s here to walk her down the aisle. This is all surreal. How is this real life? She feels like she’s in a dream.
“Wow… Look at you.” Nedley says in admiration.
“Yeah, you don’t look bad yourself.”
“I’m proud of you, kiddo.” He says in her ear as he brings her in for a tight hug.
Nicole’s been able to hold back the tears so far, but after those words she just can’t. Her parents might not be there to support her, but she has Nedley, and that’s all that matters. She allows one tear to stream down her cheek, but then she collects herself quickly. She can’t cry. Not before the ceremony has even started. Nedley smiles lovingly at her as they let go of each other, and then he holds out his arm for her to lean on. Nicole takes one last look around, and she notices Wynonna is gone. She must’ve gone get Waverly. It’s time. No more waiting. This time it’s for real. Smiling back at Nedley, she puts her hand on his arm, and they start walking towards the others. My God, this is crazy. She thinks as she sees Bunny waving at her happily. Just a perfect Earp-fashion wedding...
As they walk slowly down the aisle, her eyes get wet all over again. She just can’t help it. When she got to Purgatory she was completely alone, and now she’s getting married to the love of her life and she’s got a family who loves and supports her. She is smiling so big right now, she can feel her cheeks beginning to hurt, and just the idea of seeing Waverly makes her hearts burst with joy. She looks at Rachel, her maid of honor, and she feels so proud. The past 19 months weren’t easy for either of them, but they got through. Together. They’ve seen each other at their worst, and now hopefully they’ll get to see each other at their best too. Today a new chapter begins. A better one for sure. No matter what happens next, nothing can be worse than the hopelessness and loneliness she’s felt in those eighteen months alone.
Nicole is brought back from her thoughts when Nedley gives her hand a gentle squeeze. Nicole gives him a sweet kiss on the cheek, and then he moves away to get to his seat. All of a sudden, murmurs fill the air, and she turns to see Waverly and Wynonna walking out of the homestead and towards them. Nicole can feel her heart pounding hard. Wow… Waverly looks so beautiful… She is in a long sleeveless white lace dress. Her hair is tied up on the back of her head, and it has beautiful colorful flowers in it. Her makeup, just like Nicole’s, is very simple, and she is absolutely breathtaking. Nicole can’t help but stare at her in awe as she walks down the aisle leaning on Wynonna’s arm. And the same goes for Waverly as she studies her fiancée’s look. They both look perfect. This is all so perfect.
“Hi” “Hey” They greet each other once they’re standing side by side.
“Haught.” Wynonna says as she lets go of Waverly to embrace Nicole. “You take care of my baby sis, okay?” she whispers in her ear, her voice cracking with emotion.
“Always.”
“You got the girl, Nicole. Now go get your wife.” Wynonna says leaning back and winking at her.
What happens next is a mystery to Nicole and Waverly. All they can focus on is the person standing right in front of them, and it feels like they’re in a bubble, just the two of them. They can barely process what’s going on as Bunny takes the word to let the ceremony begin. They come back to reality when it’s time for them to say their vows.
“Sheriff…” Bunny invites her to go first.
She’s had a hard time in the past few days trying to find the right things to say, but she’s figure it out at last. Although no words could ever fully express how much Waverly Earp really means to her. As she takes Waverly’s hands into her own, she begins.
“Waverly Earp… You are my home, my love, my Angel. You are the oxygen that keeps me breathing, and the light that brightens my days. Being loved by you is by far the best thing that’s ever happened to me. You came into my life at a time when I was lost, and alone, and you turned my world completely upside down. You filled the void in my heart with joy, and laughter, and love. You gave me memories to hold onto, and reasons to fight, and stay. You turned this unfamiliar place into my home, and these strangers into my family, and all of my insecurities into my biggest strengths. You taught me to love myself just as much as I love you, and you showed me perfection where I could only see flaws. You inspire me to be the best version of me, and to always be fighting for what I believe in. You are everything I’ve ever wanted, and so so much more.” She pauses briefly to turn and take the ring from Rachel, and then she continues.
“So today, in front of our friends, and family, I take you, Waverly Earp, to be my wife. I give you this ring as a promise to love you, respect you, cherish you, and support you as my partner, my person, and my equal. And I swear I’ll do my absolute best to make you smile as bright as you do today for the rest of our lives. I vow to be a loving and protective wife, to be open to change, and ready for every challenge that comes our way. And for as long as I live and breathe, I will be by your side. Always your shield, forever your wife.”
Wow... that was a lot. Waverly knows it’s her turn now, but she is so emotional she is afraid she might forget everything that she wanted to say. She looks down at the ring on her finger, and somehow it calms her down. Looking back up into Nicole’s beautiful brown eyes, she knows she just has to speak from her heart, and the right words will come. So she takes a deep breath to steady her voice, and then she begins.
“Nicole Haught... wow, I can’t believe this is actually happening! I’ll never forget the day you walked into Shorty’s with your uniform, and your Stetson in your hands, and confidence for days. I’d been living a life in black and white for so long that I’d forgotten what real happiness felt like. But then you smiled your beautiful bright smile at me, and it all turned into colors. You showed me that it’s okay to be ambitious, and that I should never settle for anything less than what I deserve. You gave me a choice when I thought I had none. In a world of people telling me who to be, you just asked me to be myself. You held me together when my world was falling apart, and you made me feel special, when I didn’t know who I was anymore. You... you, Nicole Haught, are extraordinary. Whenever I’m in a dark place, you light my way back to safety. You are my harbor, my anchor, my rock. I don’t have anything to give you if not unconditional love, and support. And I don’t know what the future will hold for us, but I’m not afraid. Because I know that, whatever comes next, we will face it together. Side by side as it’s always been.” Mimicking Nicole, she pauses briefly to turn and take the ring from Wynonna. And then, she continues.
“Today, I take you to be my wife, on this land that’s always been my home, because you, Nicole Rayleigh Haught, are my home. With this ring, I promise to love you, respect you and support you as my love, my equal, and my partner. I will be your shoulder to cry on, and a rock to lean on. Your number one fan, the reason for your smile, and your light in the darkness. I vow to be a loving and protective wife, to love all of your flaws and imperfections, and to stand by your side for the rest of my life. Always your angel, forever your wife.”
Tears are streaming down their faces by the time Waverly finishes talking. They turn to look at their family, and they are all crying as well. Even Bunny seems to be a little bit emotional when she takes the word to conclude the ceremony.
“Alright then. Let’s make this official!” She exclaims. “By the power vested in me by... Wynonna Earp this morning, I now pronounce you partners for life, wife and wife. You may kiss your bride.”
Waverly and Nicole don’t waste a second. Without letting go of each other’s hands, they lean in for their first of many many kisses as wives. It’s just a tender kiss, but it still conveys all the love they have just professed for one another. When they part, Nicole leans down so her forehead is resting on Waverly’s. And as they stay like that for a moment, it seems like everything else disappears, and it’s just the two of them. Their eyes are blurry with tears, and all they can see are the big bright smiles lighting up their faces. This is doubtless the happiest day of their lives. There is so much joy in their hearts right now that it feels as if they might even explode.
“My wife.” Nicole states in a dreaming tone.
“Forever.” Waverly adds.
“I love you, Waverly Earp.”
“And I love you, Nicole Haught.”
None of the rest matters. As long as they have each, there is nothing they can’t overcome. Their love has survived the most impossible situations, and it will last forever. Of that they are sure.
Always your shield, forever your wife.
Always you angel, forever your wife.

I Knew Then (Wayhaught)
"Hey Waves, are you and Warren ready to go trick-or-treating?" The redhead asked as soon as her girlfriend picked up the phone.
"I wish." The brunette said, sighing heavily, effectively stopping Nicole in her tracks as the redhead was about to leave the station.
"What's wrong, baby?" The officer asked sharply, slightly nervous.
"Warren woke up with a fever this morning and he doesn't feel well. He's been looking forward to dressing up as a Transformer for weeks and getting a ton of candy." The brunette said softly since she was currently rubbing her 5-year-old son's back as he attempted to sleep.
"Oh, buddy." Nicole said softly in return as she got an idea in her head.
"Yeah, so today is not going as originally planned." The brunette said softly.
"I'm sorry, Waves. Is there anything I can do? I can bring over soup or anything like that."
"Just yourself, please. We have enough soup here to make it through an apocalypse."
"Good to know where to hide out if that ever happens. Well I'm just finishing up at work, but I'll be to yours in about an hour maybe."
"Sounds good, I miss you." The shorter of the two said to her girlfriend of 11 months.
"I miss you too, baby. I'll see you soon though. Text me if you or my favorite Earp need anything." Nicole said quickly, seeing if Waverly would notice.
"Hey! I'm kind of offended, but also not." The younger woman said with a chuckle, causing Nicole to smile happily.
"I love you, I'll see you in a bit."
"Love you too, Officer Haught. In order to walk through my front door, you best be wearing your khakis still. You have comfier clothes here."
"Noted, Miss Earp."
Sure enough, about 58 minutes later, Nicole walked into the Homestead holding a rather large pillowcase that happened to be about 3/4 full.
"Hey baby." Waverly whispered as she walked out of her son's room, stopping to quietly close the door so he wouldn't be woken by them.
"Hi Waves, how's he doing?" Nicole asked, setting the bag on the kitchen table before opening her arms for her girlfriend to walk into.
"He's asleep, so hopefully he'll wake up feeling better." The shorter girl stated, breathing in her girlfriend.
"Good. Poor buddy, I can't believe he woke up sick today of all days. I know how excited he was to go tonight."
"Yeah, I feel bad for him." Waverly added, still snuggled into Nicole's embrace. "What's in the pillowcase?" She asked as she turned her head towards the table, slowing stepping back, but still keeping hold of Nicole's hand.
"I know he's your son, so I hope I'm not overstepping, but I may have spent the last hour trick-or-treating for him. He got loads more candy than everyone else, because very much like his mom, he is well loved in town." Nicole said with a slow chuckle before she looked back up to Waverly.
"Nicole." Her girlfriend breathed out, partly in shock, as the redhead noticed tears in her eyes.
"Waves, don't cry! I'm sorry; I can give the candy to Wynonna. Warren doesn't have to know about this." The redhead said, panicking slightly.
"I'm crying because you're the sweetest person ever and I can't believe you took time out of your day to do this for him." The brunette said as the redhead smiled warmly while brushing away her girlfriend's tears.
"You're both worth it, Waverly." She said steadfastly as Waverly stood there and looked at her oddly.
"I love you so much and you are just continuing to cement your place in this family." The brunette said as she brought Nicole in for another hug.
"In the family?" She asked, slightly taken aback that Waverly viewed her as family.
"Hey. Whether you want it or not, you're part of the Earp family now. Have been for a while, in fact." Waverly said sweetly as she moved back slightly and caressed Nicole's cheek.
The next morning, Waverly woke up first and looked over at her bonus blanket, smiling heavily. The redhead's tousled hair was splayed out partially across her pillow and partly on Waverly's pillow. The taller woman still sleeping peacefully, one arm thrown above her head.
Waverly leaned in to give her kiss on the cheek before going to check on Warren, but froze when she saw something black on the inside of her girlfriend's elbow. She glanced at it from a different angle and saw the word 'family' tattooed onto her arm.
The (somewhat) single mom glanced around her own arms, freezing when she saw the word 'Warren' on the inside of her wrist. She sat there for a few seconds, slightly in shock that Nicole was her suspected, but now confirmed, soulmate.
Soulmates went unknown until a significant event happened that made one of the parties realize how much the other person meant to them. While not every couple got their tattoos from the same experience, they did generally get them within similar timeframes.
Deciding not to bother the exhausted police officer, the youngest of the Earp sisters kissed her girlfriend's lips softly and slid out of bed, quickly getting ready and then going to check on Warren.
An hour later, Nicole walked out of the bedroom, slightly more lively and saw Warren sitting on the couch with reruns of some cartoon playing in the background while he flipped through a book about dinosaurs.
"Hi buddy, how are you feeling today?" Nicole asked as she took a seat next to the smallest Earp, figuring that Waverly would make herself known at some point.
"I don't like feeling yucky, Nicky." He said softly as she looked up at her with beautiful brown eyes, sufficiently breaking part of Nicole's heart.
"I know, buddy, I'm sorry you don't feel well. You'll feel better soon though, and then we can get you in your costume and go to the park and eat candy."
"Soon?" He asked as he slowly started inch towards the redhead.
"Soon, baby. Really soon." She mumbled as she pulled him closer into herself, hugging him firmly.
"I like candy." He mumbled as Nicole could feel him get heavier, sleep starting to take over his body.
"Me too, bud, me too." The redhead said as she rubbed his back, smiling brightly when she noticed her 'family' tattoo as Waverly looked on from the kitchen.

Pour Me More Ch 2: Only a Memory
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for all those that took a chance on this story. I appreciate all the comments and kudos. Thanks to @jaybear1701 for repeatedly telling me to stop using the word "form" and to use more commas. Although I have a huge chunk of this story typed, I’m going to be getting ready for Earp-a-palooza so I’m knee deep in prep. I’ll have a vendor table there for GalPalStitches.Com if anyone wants to drop by.
Also Posted on AO3.
Trigger Warning: Mention of past suicide attempt.
Accompanying Song for this Chapter: Beauty from Pain by SuperChick
The moment her plane touched down, Nicole could feel the chill permeating through the window. She tugged her hoodie a little closer, knowing she would soon have to adorn the heavy coat that took up most of the space inside her backpack. Even with the buds in her ears, she could still hear the flight attendant droning on about keeping her seat belt on and not standing in the aisles until the plane came to a complete stop. Nervously, she gripped the small keychain in her pocket, running her thumbnail between the layers of the keyring.
When the door to the plane opened, a rush of cold filled the air and Nicole realized something she hadn't even considered… there was no warm walkway waiting outside the door leading to the airport, only icy wind and a long trek across the tarmac. She quickly tugged out her jacket, barely getting her beanie over her head before someone was clearing their throat impatiently behind her.
The frigid cold bit right into Nicole's face as she stepped down the stairs, trying not to slip on the stairs that looked at least half a century old. She attempted to turn her mind away from her burning eyes and the frigid shock to her lungs as she followed the flock of people that headed towards a nearby building. Instead, she thought about home, picturing the sun shining on the perfect break, the wind smelling of salt and sunscreen. She tried to taste the seawater on her tongue and hear the wind blowing through the leaves of coconut trees, the feel of soft skin under her fingertips and lips pressing against the spot just below her left ear. Listening closely, she could hear that voice…
"My beautiful beach rat."
Nicole blinked as her eyes began to water, lost in a memory of what once was, her feet working by autopilot. A blast of artificial heat assaulted her just inside the door and she was pulled back to the present, feeling her skin drying almost instantly. "Welcome to fucking Canada," she mumbled as she moved with the crowd being herded towards the baggage area by security ribbons and faded signs. The large digital display on the wall told her it was just before noon and she tried not to think too much about what she'd be doing if she were home, about how she'd be in third period, American History. A lot of good that would do her now.
It wasn't a far walk. The airport didn't appear to be much bigger than one of those gas stations surrounded by cornfields in rural Indiana or some other horror movie shit like that. Where zombie kids came out of nowhere to slaughter you if you weren't paying attention.
It didn't fill her with a sense of comfort.
From what her mother had told her about her hometown, Purgatory was a bit of a shithole - a place where you were lucky if your house had indoor plumbing. She hadn't even fathomed that outhouses were still a thing. Her thoughts lingered on midnight bathroom trips and the probability of freezing to death on a shitter.
There had to be a statistic for that somewhere.
The baggage area was straight ahead through a set of automatic doors. The guard blocking the exit from the secure area was a man who had to be at least 80 years old, sitting on a stool and sleeping soundly. To Canada's credit, the waiting loved ones seemed to be keeping honest by staying near the baggage claim, waiting patiently for the passengers to exit.
Nicole wasn't quite sure who she should be looking for and raised an eyebrow as she saw a girl dressed in black leather holding a hand-written sign that said Haught Pants McGee. The girl wore a pair of aviator glasses that she lowered to look at Nicole. Blue eyes, angular features and all attitude, no doubt stuck in some sort of personal rebellion against the social norm. This had to be one of the sisters she'd heard about. Nicole sighed softly, walking straight up to her and stopping.
"I don't think we're at the point in our relationship where you can make fun of my name yet."
The girl shrugged, folding up the sign. "Well, can I make fun of you being gay at least? I do have to say, I always wanted a gay cousin. I'm Wynonna."
"I'm pretty sure that could be considered some level of prejudice." Nicole gave her a wry look. She wasn't quite sure how to gauge her new acquaintance. "Well, I'm Nicole and I can't say I ever wanted a leather-clad deviant as a cousin… adopted cousin… or second cousin of my mother's adoptive family... however the hell this works."
"Funny, I'm not the one that was sent off to another country," Wynonna paused. "This time. Shit, maybe we are related… by adoption," she mocked before pursing her lips and looking around awkwardly. "So… now that we've firmly established that we could legally bone without being shunned by society… you got more shit than that little backpack? Cause you're a little too tall for my meticulously assembled wardrobe and you're definitely about a dick and a half too tall for Waverly's shit."
Nicole couldn't help smiling. She'd had a picture of what the people of Purgatory would be like, but this was definitely not it. Wynonna was snarky and crass. It reminded her a little of her best friend back home, the one that was still alive anyway. "Yeah, I've got a suitcase and a duffle. And is the phallic measuring system particular to Canada as a whole or your own personal flare?"
"Easy now, Haught. I don't think we're in that stage of our relationship that you can ask me about my personal flare," Wynonna quipped with a wink. "And I hope you don't expect me to help you carry shit… I've got like… corporal tunnel."
"Carpal tunnel," Nicole corrected. "One too many hand jobs?"
Wynonna had the audacity to smirk. "Maybe a dozen too many." When a buzzer rang through the area, there were a few clanks before the small baggage carousel started spinning. "Let's get your shit so we can get back to Purgatory."
The drive was longer than Nicole thought it would be. It took about an hour of listening to Wynonna's shitty death metal that Nicole was pretty sure was Scandinavian before they passed the sign that said "Welcome to Purgatory! You'll never want to leave." Nicole swallowed audibly as they passed through the town at what had to be double the speed limit.
Nicole watched with apprehension as Wynonna seemed to almost gleefully speed past the sheriff's department, her eyes watching the rearview mirror with disappointment as no one noticed, as if she wanted to be pulled over. Wynonna huffed and turned the music down just a bit and slowed as the building disappeared out of view behind them.
It took another 15 minutes to push straight through the other side of town and drive the short distance away to what looked like a farm of sort. The house wasn't at all the shack Nicole imagined it would be, she thought, the Jeep pulling to a halt with a jolt. It was a two story house with a porch that wrapped around two sides of it. Behind the house and a bit away, there appeared to be a greenhouse that had seen better days, some of the windows cracked or missing.
Nicole slipped out of the Jeep, her legs a little unsteady after the less-than-smooth ride. There was a loud creak and she saw a woman standing in the doorway. She was slightly familiar, not from Nicole's own memories, but from photos she'd seen when she was younger.
"Nicole." The woman had short grey hair and wore a flannel shirt tucked into high-waisted jeans. She held the screen door open, expecting Nicole to enter.
Grabbing her suitcase and duffel from the back of the jeep, Nicole kept her head down, stepping inside and looking around. It was… rustic was the best word she could think of. Not exactly Martha Stewart's idea of rustic, but certainly not the backwater redneck motif she was expecting.
"Alright, let me look at you." Gus stepped up to her, a thoughtful look on her face. Her eyes held a wisdom that seemed befitting of her old age. Gus had of course aged since the pictures from her mother's childhood. "You look just like your mother, but definitely a lot taller," Gus mused.
"Yeah." Nicole nodded. "So I've been told." She wasn't in the mood to talk about her mother. It was one of the things she'd dreaded, having to discuss her dead mother with the woman that had adopted her. Her mother had never spoken ill of Gus, just that she was a no-nonsense woman with keen observation skills. Gus hadn't come to the funeral and Nicole hadn't understood at the time, but after her own experience with grief, it had bought Gus a bit of lenience.
Wynonna entered the house with a slam of the door, causing everyone to jump.
"Damn it, Wynonna." Gus shook her head.
Wynonna held up her hands. "Not nice to swear at kids, Gus. You're gonna give Haught here a bad impression."
"You are not a damn kid anymore. In fact, isn't it about time you went and got yourself a job?"
"I'd love to, Gus," Wynonna shrugged, "but you know with this economy, it's getting harder to find a job that will pay you an honest living when you've got a college education, let alone being a high school dropout."
"That's funny because your sister got a job during the summer, and she's two years younger than you and still in high school."
"You got her that job!"
Nicole just watched as they argued back and forth, feeling a bit like a third wheel but also feeling a passive amusement. She'd never really gotten the opportunity to argue with her mother like this, and even if Wynonna and Gus weren't actually mother and daughter, it was an interesting dynamic.
"Can you just show her to her room, please, while I get started on dinner?" Gus massaged her temple. "I have to work tonight and I'd rather not do it with a dang headache."
Wynonna did an about face, heading to the stairs and stopping suddenly before looking at Nicole. "You coming or what?"
"Sure." Nicole shook her head, grabbing her luggage. "Thanks, Gus," she said as she passed the older woman. It was a bit of a struggle getting the luggage up the stairs, but she got there to find Wynonna leaning against the wall near a door, arms crossed over her chest. "Thanks."
"Glad to help." Wynonna responded. "Here's your room. Mine is down the hall over there and my sister Waverly's room is between ours. Gus sleeps in the room downstairs."
"OK." Nicole nodded, setting her things just inside the door before looking up at Wynonna.
Wynonna pursed her lips, tapping the toe of one of her boots for a moment before clapping her hands once. "Okay, then. Welcome to Purgatory." She turned on her heels and left without another word.
Nicole released a long sigh as she looked around the room. "Well…" She shucked off the heavier coat she wore but kept her hoodie on, hugging the material closer to her. The room wasn't much smaller than her room back home, but it smelt like storage and the walls were bare. The bed looked new, at least, with fresh sheets and a thick comforter.
She probably should have started unpacking - settling into what was going to be her new life for however long her father didn't want to deal with her anymore. She didn't blame him, of course. He hadn't been the same since her mother died. Her grief was a mirror of his own, a living reminder of what loss felt like. It was easier for him to turn his back on her than to live through it again.
She ignored her suitcase completely, grabbing her duffle bag as she sat on the bed. It was softer than she liked, almost as soft as Shae's pillowtop. "Stop." She broke the silence of the room. She knew she needed to stop comparing everything to… before.
Her watch alarm went off with a soft beep, a reminder that came three times a day of just how fragile she was. In her backpack she found three brown bottles, the contents rattling softly as she fought against the child-safety locks. Her grip strength still hadn't come back fully, even after months of physical therapy. Eventually she was able to tip out the collection of whites and peach that had become her life, washing them back with the half-empty bottle of water she'd gotten on the plane. With a grimace at the bitter taste left on her tongue, Nicole tossed the bottles back into the safety of her backpack. She wasn't quite ready to share that part of herself with her new housemates. No doubt her father had already told Gus, but no sense in giving Wynonna what could be prime ammo to use against her.
From her backpack she pulled a small framed photo, her fingertip brushing along the line of Shae's jaw. "Well… we're in some shit, Babe." She set the photo on the nightstand and pulled a familiar plush throw from her duffle bag. She could feel the lethargic wave washing over her, the side effect of her medication almost irresistible when combined with hours of traveling.
Kicking off her shoes, she pushed her bags to one side of the bed before wrapping herself in the throw, breathing in the scent of home. Looking around the room once more, she let her eyes settle on the photo of Shae as she drifted off to sleep.
The sun was reaching for the horizon by the time Waverly stepped out of the locker room and headed towards the parking lot. Cheerleading had gone a little long but still Wynonna was nowhere to be seen. She sniffled against the cold as she checked her wristwatch.
"Waves!"
Looking up, she raised a hand as Jeremy jogged up to her, his breath coming out in white puffs of condensation. "Hey Jer-bear." She smiled at her best friend who was carrying a stack of books. It was Friday which meant he had been meeting with the science club. A genius when it came to anything science, he was the only other student in Purgatory that was graduating a year early, but unlike Waverly, he wasn't a cheerleader that was liked by everyone in town. He often got pushed around by the asshole jocks of the school and Waverly did her best to shield him with her own popularity. Not only was he picked on for his intelligence, but also for being one of the few out gay students in school, and the only person Waverly had confided in regarding her questioning her own sexuality.
"What are you still doing here, Crazy." He scratched at the stubble forming along his jaw. "It's freezing! Where's your Jeep?"
Waverly shrugged. "Wynonna had to pick someone up from the airport so she took it. She's running a little late, as always."
"Classic Wynonna." Jeremy shook his head. "Got some family visiting?"
"Kind of." Waverly pursed her lips, trying to think of the best way to explain it. "I guess she's kind of like a second cousin but not really? Her mom was adopted by Gus as a kid," she explained. "And I guess she's going to be living with us for a little bit. I'm not exactly sure how long."
"Whoa." Jeremy raised his eyebrows in surprise, shifting the books in his hands so he could adjust his beanie. "That's kind of crazy. Have you not met her before?"
Waverly shook her head, feeling the chill attacking her uncovered face. "Nope. Her dad is American so she lives in California…lived I guess."
Jeremy grimaced. "From California to Purgatory… that's gonna be a bit of a weather shock."
Waverly chuckled. "Completely. You'll probably meet her on Monday," she paused before an idea came to her, " unless you wanted to come over this weekend?" She gave Jeremy her best pleading look. "We can study for our physics exam?"
"As if you needed to study." He rolled his eyes in exaggeration before sniffling.
"There's never any harm in studying, even when you know the answers." Waverly heard the sound of the gears on her Jeep grinding before she saw Wynonna skidding into the lot. "God damn it, Wynonna." Waverly barked as both she and Jeremy took an instinctual step back, the Jeep barely stopped in time.
"Sup Nerd," Wynonna nodded towards Jeremy before looking at Waverly. "Get in, Loser."
Waverly rolled her eyes before giving Jeremy a quick hug. "Tomorrow? Please?"
Jeremy sighed. "You know I can't say no to you."
"Good. Awesome. Thank you. I love you." Waverly grinned and waved before she slipped into the Jeep. As they pulled away, she reached over and turned the volume of the death metal down. "So…."
"So what?"
Waverly narrowed her eyes at her sister. "What are your thoughts?"
"That Hanson should never have stopped making music."
"Wynonna!"
Wynonna huffed. "What do you want me to say? She's… quiet, but snarky. Taller than me… like Wonder Woman kind of tall minus the leather bathing suit. She… looks so gay."
Waverly had to laugh. "What the heck does that mean?" Waverly looked down at her own clothes, star speckled leggings tucked into fuzzy calf-high boots under her cheerleading uniform that was covered with a puffy white jacket with faux-fur trim. Did she's look gay? Or bisexual rather? She didn't think so.
"You're just gonna have to see for yourself I guess."
Waverly nodded, looking out at the stretch of road ahead of them. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Wynonna Earp S3 Ep7: I Fall To Pieces (aka...you will too)
Okay, so, some are saying they think this is just a “filler” episode.  I don’t think that is entirely accurate.  I mean, at some point, Wynonna and Nicole would have to learn to work together.  Michelle was bound to take off at some point too.  I mean it is rather surprising that the cops haven’t shown up in Purgatory looking for her yet.  We wanted some more of Nicole’s past and we got a doozie and we cried.  Wynonna finds out the truth about Doc and she reacted just like I would have and I cried with both of them.  Damn it all!  This show is stressing me the hell out this season!
I swear.  I try, I really do, to try to type a small recap / review.  However, Wynonna Earp is one of those shows that is so well written and has such good stuff going on, that I can’t.  I just can’t.  I don’t want any of my readers to miss anything and to read this and say, “Okay, now I HAVE to watch the actual episode!”  So, here we go folks!
We open with, ugh….Wynonna and Charlie in a firetruck trying to get in another…..well…I can’t put that word here.  You know what I mean. Wynonna swears that this is going to be their last time.  Yeah, right.  Charlie thinks it is good stress relief and they should continue.  They almost get all their clothes off and get going when two familiar voices are heard.  By the way, they are in a firetruck IN THE firehouse!  It is Waverly and Nicole handing out fresh coffee to the fire crew and thanking them for their service and dedication.  They don’t think so fondly of Sheriff Nedley, but Nicole assures them that it will be different when she is Sheriff.
Inside the truck, they are getting dressed and Charlie remarks that he actually didn’t know Waverly and Haught were a thing.  He assures Wynonna when questioned, that Purgatory Pride is his favorite event every year.  She is surprised to hear they have such an event and a firetruck gets painted the rainbow colors.  Charlie also says that Nicole warned him about her….how she is a hot mess.  Wynonna thanks him for the uh….”Pump?” she says and Charlie replies with “That’s gross.” Wynonna tries again….”Backdraft?”  and Charlie questions her “Did we do that?”  “Heeeeeaaat.”  Wynonna says and they kiss and fall back and her hand hits the firetruck alarm.
A very embarrassed Wynonna climbs out of the truck and everyone is there staring.  She says there is nothing to see here but a grown ass woman with grown up needs simply leaving a firehouse.  Because, you know, that is a totally everyday occurrence.  Nicole asks if she needs a ride.  “I had a ride.  I need a nap.”  Wynonna answers.  Then admits that yes, she needs a ride.  Waverly asks if her and Doc are no longer a thing.  Wynonna answers curtly, “We were never a thing and I haven’t seen him in a week.”
At Kate’s house Doc is lying on the floor with Kate in front of the fireplace.  He lifts his hand and suddenly jumps up as the ring of Bulshar is burning him.  He runs to a vase and ….oh, my…..I see ass cheeks.  His chaps are open.  LOL.  He takes his hand out and looks at the ring and says, “What have I done?”
The bitch of a wife (sorry…I can’t stand her…) says that the ring is rejecting him as he is now a vampire that makes him compromised.  However, not to worry, because they are together forever like he wanted.  Ummm…..I think YOU wanted that Kate and took advantage of the situation.  Doc moves to a mirror and looks at himself, runs a hand over his chest and says, “Just like I wanted” just as his image is disappearing.
Frat boys singing it up in a jail cell at the station.  Sheriff Nedley tells Wynonna that they are from the city and their party bus was confiscated.  Waverly finds Jeremy asleep at his desk and wakes him up.  She asks what he is doing.  He has been working on trying to figure out where Bulshar might have moved his operation since they closed down the other one.  Waverly thinks that is great, but that Jeremy, not even knowing what day it is, really needs a falafel and some rest.
Nicole and Wynonna are in the Sheriff’s office and are moving a bookshelf while Nedley sits at his desk.  Behind the shelf is a door.   “We finally get to see your sex cave?”  Wynonna jokes with him.  He says it is more of a closet and hands them keys.  He explains that it is evidence and notes on cases that were a little on the supernatural side.  Wynonna asks why he didn’t give them to Dolls.  Nedley says he wasn’t sure whether to trust Dolls at first, but now he knows.  They look inside and there is quite a bit of stuff.
Apparently, he has been collecting this since he became Sheriff.  “It’s like Hoarders meets Storage Wars.” Wynonna jokes.  It is up to Nicole and Wynonna to work together to figure out what to keep and what to burn.
Nedley checks with Nicole on how it is going getting backing from City Council on her becoming Sheriff.  She complains that Bunny Loblaw won’t return any of her calls and still reigns over City Council with an iron fist.  Nedley tells her that Bunny can smell fear and she needs to learn to hide that and take control of the situation.  Nicole runs off to make another phone call to Bunny to set up a meeting. “Bunny’s gonna eat her for lunch.”  Wynonna remarks to Nedley.
Doc is at the Earp Homestead in the barn looking for a can or container to put the ring in.  He finds one and remarks that it will have to do when he hears the cocking of a rifle behind him.  It is Michelle.  She tells him it isn’t a good idea to go sneaking around with an armed mental patient on the loose.  “I thought we were friends.” Doc remarks to her.  She laughs and says that he bailed on her Christmas feast.  He apologizes and says that very important had come up.  He turns around and Michelle “You’re gonna make it up to me. Don’t worry.  I’ll drive if you’re too tired.”  She needs to leave for a while, to get out of town and to get going or she is gonna roll him for the keys.
Nicole and Wynonna start to argue about cleaning out the closet.  Wynonna is sitting reading old notes and finds a picture of a “baby” Nedley when he was just starting out and had a kids with him. With Nicole getting mad because of lack of help, Wynonna rushes in with attitude and starts throwing things out as “crap” or “not crap”.  Nicole goes to stop her just as she has a black weird looking mirror.  They struggle over it and Wynonna lets go, making Nicole lose control of it and it falls and breaks on the ground.  “Smooth move Ginger Spice.  You just earned yourself seven years bad luck.”  Wynonna says.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the Triangle, a small shed explodes (by the way there are creepy looking scarecrows on that fence) and a very ugly looking dude I nicknamed Mr. Fugly emerges carrying very large hedge clippers.  He’s a very happy, jolly sort.  If you bought that last line you have never watched this show.
Wynonna goes to the bar and meets Nedley there.  He is drinking Ginger Ale.  She orders her usual, a whiskey and leave the bottle.  She shows him the photo she found.  “It’s like your upper lip is wearing a skinny tie” she jokes with him.  He looks at it and smiles.  He asks how the evidence closet is going and Wynonna accuses Nicole of smashing stuff and complains what it is like trying to work with someone with a “pickle up their ass” and that the woman is all work and no play.  That someday she is going to snap and chop up someone with an axe.  Nedley says to go easy on Nicole and slides the picture back to Wynonna.  “You two have more in common than you think” he says as he points to the little girl in the picture.
Nicole is at home trying her best to get ready for the Bunny visit.  She turns her back for a second and hears someone behind her.  She is startled to see Bunny is there and has let herself in.  She offers to take the woman’s coat, but is told, “What.  So you can rifle through the pockets?”  Then she freaks when she sees Calamity Jane the cat and tells Nicole that either the cat goes or she does because she is deathly allergic. So, poor Nicole picks up the cat and runs her upstairs.  Bunny takes the opportunity to look around and sees a picture of Waverly and Nicole together.  She makes a face, slowly puts it down and says, “Disgusting!” as she walks away.
Michelle and Doc are at the Earp gravesite.  Michelle places flowers on the grave which has both Ward’s and Willa’s name on it.  Doc says he is very sorry, but Michelle says that Willa was Ward’s pet and was a spoiled brat with a mean streak. “She would have made a terrible heir.”  Doc reminds her that Willa was just a child. Michelle looks at the grave and touches Willa’s name and apologizes for not being there to protect her.  She suddenly gets up and walks off. Doc yells after her, asking where the hell she is going now.  “Come on. I’ll tell you which way to turn.”  She yells back to him.  Doc begins to complain, “It’s freezing out here.” And she tells him to “Stop being such a wiener. Besides, I know you have a bottle of Tequila stashed under your seat that will get us through.”
Back at Nicole’s, poor Nicole is trying to have a nice conversation with the wicked witch of the universe.  Nicole tells her that she has great plans of how to run the office more efficiently and ways to make the town safer.  “Well, that is all fine and good, Deputy Haught, but my main concern is this.  Randy Nedley is full of SHIT!  I am so sick and tired of being kept in the dark about all the strange occurrences in Purgatory.” She goes on to say that she refuses to be lied to about what is going on “in HER town under HER nose.”  Nicole asks what she means.  “Well, you tell me.  That is why I am here.  Unless, you don’t want to be Sheriff.”  She adds not to give her “that hooey” about costume parties gone out of control or escaped zoo animals.  Nicole tries to say that Purgatory is a “special” place with “special” challenges.
Then Wynonna comes bursting in and says she needs to talk to Nicole for a minute.  Nicole says it isn’t the right time, but Bunny smiles and says that it is in fact the perfect time because she was thinking of backing Wynonna Earp as Sheriff.  Nicole can’t believe what she is hearing both her and Wynonna laugh thinking Bunny is joking, but she isn’t.  She says that Wynonna is “a straight shooter and one tough bitch”
and that the Earp family is one of the original families.  She calls Nicole nothing but “a fly-by-night outsider and a “little too…..different.”  Nicole has heard enough and grabs Wynonna and takes her to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, Wynonna is laughing “Wait until Bunny learns about Purgatory Pride!"  Nicole asks what she is doing there.  Wynonna says it is about her (Nicole) and Nedley.  But before she goes on she reverts back to the Bunny situation.  Laughing again, she says “Wait.  Did Bun Buns really just say I could be….”  Nicole interrupts her, “OH, no.  You can NOT take that job.”  “I don’t want that job.” Wynonna says.  Nicole says that is good because Wynonna would have been terrible at it.  She has no police training, is terrible with authority and isn’t even qualified to work at a Chipotle’s” Wynonna takes offense and says that maybe she WILL take that job and be “Sheriff Nedley 2.0” and would be Nicole’s boss.
They are still arguing when Bunny turns around and at the window is Mr. Fugly and she yells out and falls face first on the floor.  Wynonna is coming out of the kitchen about to “go get stuff done” and sees Bunny on the floor.  “Balls!  Bunny’s dead.”  She yells to Nicole.  Nicole rushes out and sees Bunny there and the cat sitting on top of her.  Nicole rushes over and says that Bunny is “deathly allergic” and to get her purse.  “Right!  Cash!”  says Wynonna.  Nicole yells “No, for medicine!”  They dump the purse looking for an allergy medicine and find a lot more than just that.  Wynonna finds Oxy and Nicole hits it out of her hand.  They find one and give it to Bunny with some tea which makes Bunny cough and wake up.
They help Bunny up and out to the police cruiser.  Nicole says it will be faster to use that with the sirens on. Bunny is complaining all the way.  She tells them not to take her to Purgatory General as there are “too many immigrant doctors there”.  Nicole just shoves her in the back of the car.  She tells Wynonna to go back inside and grab Bunny’s purse.  They argue over who is going to go back inside and Nicole finally says she will, but Wynonna has to be right, so she is going to.  As they argue back to the front door, two of the frat boys sneak into the police car and take off.  Bunny is screaming in the back seat about what is going on.  Nicole runs out into the road and exclaims, “You’ve got to be freaking kidding me!”  Wynonna chuckles and says, “Look who needs my help now.”
A little bit later, Nicole comes out of the house with Bunny’s stuff and finds Wynonna trying to hotwire the car.  She tells her she actually has the keys and that she should actually drive because she is the cop and it would be seen as commandeering the vehicle for official police business.  Wynonna says there are bigger fish to fry and shuts the door.  Nicole decides she will call Waverly then.
At the station, Waverly is on the phone with Nicole.  Jeremy and she are logging into the computer to track the GPS of the police car.  Jeremy laughs and says that they are having some super bad luck today.  “Speed it up Jagged Little Nerd.”  You hear Wynonna say through the phone.  Jeremy quickly locates the car, and it is parked.  However, Waverly says that they need to hurry.
It seems the two stupid frat boys decided to go to a biker bar run over by revenants.  They get to the police car and Bunny starts screaming at them.  She tells Nicole “Get me out of here you white trash tart.”  Yeah….sure helping your situation there honey.  Let me get right on that.  I would actually move a hell of a lot slower just to make it more amusing to myself.  Nicole finds the extra key and goes to unlock the passenger side door and guess what…..it breaks.   Bunny of course screams at Nicole calling her a freaking moron.  Wynonna pulls her gun and aims it at Bunny who backs up, but Nicole stops her saying that the bullet could ricochet and hit Bunny.  Wynonna raises her gun again thinking it is worth the risk.  “OR US.”  Nicole adds.  Wynonna puts the gun away. Nicole wonders if they could call the fire department to come rip the door off.  Wynonna thinks that is a bad idea because the fire crew would never let the Sheriff’s office live that down.  Wynonna thinks their only option is to go inside and “find Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Douche” and get the original keys.  They wander to the bar and peek inside.
There are quite a few demons in there.  Nicole says they are outnumbered and wouldn’t want Bunny seeing them shooting anyway.  Wynonna scoffs and takes off.
Along a roadside, Doc and Michelle are leaning against his car.  She is working on that bottle of Tequila.  She tells Doc how growing up, she couldn’t wait to join the rodeo circuit to get out of the hell hole of a town.  However, she came back one August weekend, got drunk and pregnant and ended up marrying Ward Earp.  “Well, he did give you three beautiful daughters” Doc remarks.  Michelle says, no only two.  “Waverly was Julian’s, remember?”  Doc pauses then asks, “What’s it like being with an angel?”  Michelle simply answers with a question.  “What’s it like being with a demon?”  She changes the subject in a way.  She tells Doc how Julian made her feel like she didn’t have to break her spirit to be happy.  That the night Waverly was born, Ward pushed Julian out of the Ghost River Triangle.  Right where they were standing now.  Doc asks how she knows this and she says that Bobo DelRay told her.  “You talked to him?”  Doc asks her.  She says she did more than talk.  She gave Bobo the dinner Doc refused and she gave Bobo his freedom.  “Are you out of your godforsaken mind woman?!”  Doc exclaims.  Michelle stays calm as usual.  “Yes, I think we have already established that.”  Doc tells her that she has unleashed a monster.  Michelle tells Doc that Bulshar is risen and it will take monsters to fight a monster.  Doc reminds her that Bobo has tried to kill her own daughters multiple times and she doesn’t get to make these life or death decisions for them. “Who’s gonna stop me?  You, Johnny Hank?”  Michelle asks.  “If necessary.” Doc says getting closer.  Michelle smiles and says it looks like they are finally really talking, so ….”Here are my terms.”
At the Revenant Roadhouse bar, the two frat boys are tied up back to back sitting on the bar.  The demons are trying to figure out the best way to kill them.  Wynonna and Nicole manage to sneak in and almost get the keys from the one guys pocket when they are discovered.  They want to kill both of them as well.  However, Wynonna says to the one who seems like the leader that he seems like a sporting type.  What would be the sport of “ripping Dumb and Doucher to shreds”.  She says they should let the boys go and they can have a contest.
A drinking contest.  If the girls win, they get to leave unharmed.  If the demons win….well…..they can kill them.  “You could have just offered them cash.”  Nicole tells Wynonna who realizes she really didn’t think it through to the end.
Back at the station, Waverly is getting worried because neither her sister nor Nicole are answering their phone calls.  Jeremy brings up a review of the events thus far.  How what has happened seems spectacularly unlucky.  That makes Waverly think and they rush to the office.  They find the broken mirror on the floor and hope that if they put it back together it will fix the problem.
The drinking game is on at the Roadhouse.  They have gone a few rounds already with shots.  Wynonna takes a shot and chases with a beer.  They call for another type of liquor which is gross tasting by the looks of it.  They count to three and drink.  The demon looks like he is about to puke.  He brings up the shot he just had.  Wynonna claims they have won fair and square and to uncuff them, but spills her beer bottle.  The leader demon grabs it and sniffs it and says she was cheating as she was spitting her shots into the bottle every time.  Nicole asks where she got that idea.  “I learned it from Coyote Ugly” she says.  “Oooooh!  I love that movie!” says a very drunk Nicole.  The demon says now he gets to break their necks and all the revenants shout. Wynonna and Nicole quickly get up, Wynonna pulls out Peacemaker and they make a run for it.  They are trying to run in knee deep snow with chain handcuffs on, through the woods.  Wynonna is telling Nicole to hurry up and Nicole is telling Wynonna she is too drunk to keep up.
Doc is at Kate’s house going through some of her things.  He comes across some ID’s and Driver Licenses.  “You’ve found my mementos.”  Kate says coming into the room.  Doc says they are more like souvenirs of people she has killed.  Kate says that it a vulgar way of putting it.  Doc says it is the truth.  Kate asks if he is helping Wynonna and Doc says “In a matter of speaking.”  Kate has to point out that she must be some woman if he is willing to give up one of his precious pistols as Doc wraps stuff up in a sheet.  Kate thinks it is sweet that he still thinks Wynonna will still want him.  “You know how your jealousy bores me” he says to her.  “As you are” Kate adds.  “Wynonna made me the way I am” he says and
Kate comes at him growling and bearing her teeth.  Kate suddenly does her thing of turning all sweet and says, “My Henry.  The greatest gunslinger that ever lived.  A filthy, rotten scoundrel.”  Doc slaps her hand away from his face.  She adds that how sad it is all this stuff he is doing for her.  For what?  Doc says that she (Wynonna) thinks I can be better.  “Than what?” asks Kate.  It’s beneath you.  Wynonna is breaking your spirit.  I love you.  At your worst, or even more.”  Kate says as she leans in and kisses him.  Doc pauses, then pulls away.  “Then you should know that I am a man that does not do ultimatums or likes to choose.”  Kate laughs.  “You and I are linked together forever.”  She challenges Doc to go see if Wynonna will welcome him back into her bed.
Back in the woods, Wynonna and Nicole run and then stop because they are arguing.  Nicole thinks Wynonna needs to get her head out of her ass because she isn’t the only one who has suffered through something.  Wynonna makes fun of Nicole and says in a whiny baby voice that oh, yeah, Nicole survived a massacre.  She quickly makes a face saying she regrets saying it like that.  Wynonna brings out her gun and Nicole yells how immature she is.  The damn gun is jammed.  She adds that yes, Nicole survived a massacre, but to get back to her when she is cursed.  She tries to aim the gun at the chain, but it is still jammed and then an axe comes flying out of nowhere and hits a tree nearby.
They turn and find that the revenants have found them.  The leader says how they are “such catty little bitches” and that they are so deep in animosity that they are basting in it which will make them tastier.  Wynonna and Nicole face each other.  “You be Scott.”  Wynonna says.  “You be Tessa.”  Says Nicole and they start to fight.  Peacemaker finally after a few dead clicks decides to start working and that axe comes in handy.  The chain they still have on also is handy for breaking a neck.  However, when they think they have them all, the leader comes from behind and grabs them and bends them over backwards under his arms.  He asks if they have any last words.  They say a few, but then the revenant is killed by something behind him.
It is Mr. Fugly.  “You owe me a wife!”  he tells them as he closes his clippers.  They both decide that this is a worse situation and make a run for it.
Back at the station, Waverly is just about done taping the mirror back together.  They are missing a piece she yells to Jeremy who comes flying into the room with it.  They have it all back together and hope that they fixed the situation.  Just then Nicole and Wynonna come running in yelling about a mountain man.  “A gross, scabby mountain man!”  yells Wynonna.  Jeremy looks at Waverly and says it looks like that it didn’t fix it.
Mr. Fugly comes marching in.  Waverly tells him to wait just a minute Gandolph but he throws her to the side.  Jeremy grabs a broom and yells, “You SHALL NOT PASS!”  and the guy just roars into Jeremy’s face and Jeremy tells him “Yeah, you just do you” and goes to help Waverly.  He looks at Nicole and Wynonna and tells them again that they owe him a wife and to choose.  Waverly hears wife and grabs Jeremy and they make their way to the office.  Meanwhile, Wynonna and Nicole are trying to tell Mr. Fugly why the other would make the best wife.
In the office Waverly says that it must have been something else.  They find large pieces of what seems to be an oversized garden gnome.  Jeremy yells to the girls that he is a gnome, but Wynonna doesn’t see how that is helping their situation.  Waverly and Jeremy take the gnome figure to the desk to use the tape to try to put it back together.  Mr. Fugly gnome gets tired of the talking and yells at Wynonna and Nicole to stop talking and grabs them and lifts them up by the neck.  They have to choose who is going to be his wife.  Waverly says they have one more piece and it is……boobs.
It is a lady gnome!  She tells Jeremy to put that piece on but Jeremy sees a lawsuit just waiting to happen.  Waverly goes ahead and, wishing they had a gnome bra, tapes the last piece on and turns it towards the big guy.  Lightning strikes and the figurine is in one piece.  The big guy drops Nicole and Wynonna.  “Monique!  You are okay.”  He picks her up, hugs her and walks out.
At the Earp Homestead, Doc has arrived with a car he says he found at the roadhouse with the keys still in it.  Hmmmmm…looks a lot like Bunny Loblaw’s car!  LOL!!  Michelle looks in the sheet and sees the supplies Doc has brought her.
There is some cash and a ‘new’ ID.  She remarks that she knew an outlaw would get what is needed when she needed to get out of Dodge fast.  However, she refuses to take Doc’s pistol, as he might need it in the future.  “Otherwise, nicely done Johnny Hank!”  she tells him as she puts the stuff in the back seat.  “Wish I could say the same.” Doc remarks.  “Is this where you beg me to stay?”  Michelle asks him.  “I do NOT beg.”  Doc tells her.  Michelle goes off on that it seems to be her lot in life to have to leave to save those she loves.  She says Doc knows what she is talking about, that he recognizes her and what she is doing.  Doc answers that she is leaving and putting her family in mortal danger.  Michelle says that if Julian is outside the Ghost River Triangle and if he is still there, she needs to find him.  Doc says that from the moment she walked into that barn she knew he would make her leave and would help her do so.  “Sometimes it takes a monster” she says to him touching his hat.  He grabs her wrist.  “Wynonna will be angry.” Doc says.  “She won’t be angry with you.  She always seems to forgive you.” Michelle replies.  Doc says that she still might not escape Wynonna’s anger because she is abandoning her family for….love.  “Oh.  Like I am gonna let a vampire lecture me on love.”  Michelle quips as she gets into the car and leaves.  Okay…..how the hell did Michelle find out?
At the station, Wynonna is startled to find Bunny standing at the counter.  She claims it was only a “fancy faint”.  “Yeah, the cat made a bed in your ass crack.”  Wynonna remarks.  Bunny tells her that the doctors say she is as healthy as an ox.  “And the cankles to go with it.”  Another wonderful remark by Wynonna.  Well, Bunny says that she is there to let Officer Haught know that despite that day’s events, she will NOT be getting her support for Sheriff.  Wynonna drops what she was holding and goes over to Bunny.  She says that despite her best interests, Nicole did what was right.  She always does what is right and that is someone who should be Sheriff.  She reminds Bunny who saved her life that day.  “Perhaps.  But she does not belong here in Purgatory.  She is not our…..people.”  Bunny says with her nose in the air.  “Are you a xenophobe or a homophobe?”  Wynonna asks her.  “Why….pick….just….one?”  the bitch replies.  Bunny tries to leave, but Wynonna stops her and grabs her wrist.  She tells Bunny that they should talk about what really happened today……what she saw.  Bunny tells her that it was all a dream…..a very bad dream.  Wynonna informs her that in fact it wasn’t a dream.  That she really doesn’t want to know all those little secrets that Nedley has been trying to hide or cover over, because that monster she saw today was just the very tip of the iceberg.  Wynonna threatens Bunny saying that if she doesn’t back Nicole for Sheriff, she will personally bring that monster and all his demon friends right to her house.  Bunny thinks she is bluffing, but Wynonna assures her she is not.  Bunny leaves, claiming she needs to go to church.
Wynonna turns and sees Nicole standing in the doorway.  She has heard pretty much all of it and thanks Wynonna and offers her a beer.  It seems she can now hear space and time with this hangover.  Wynonna is shocked about having a beer at work.  Nicole laughs and says that some rules are meant to be broken sometimes.  Nicole calls a truce, but Wynonna calls it a win.
Wynonna tells Nicole that she used to think Nicole was an outsider too and that she would freak out and leave and Waverly would have a broken heart.  Nicole assures her that she loves Waverly.  Actually, she loves Wynonna too (not in the same way of course) and that she is often jealous of Wynonna for being….well….Wynonna.  “You’re staked to this land, same as me.”  Wynonna tells her and shows her the picture of young Nedley and Nicole.
Nicole goes and finds Nedley in his office.  She hands him the picture.  “You were so damned scared. But still so damned tough.” He tells her.  He tells her that somehow she managed to get into a canoe to safety and he found her down river.  “You’re the one.”  Nicole says quietly.  Nedley just says that he kept an eye on her afterwards and what kind of parents let a six year old go to a music festival in the woods.  Nicole smiles and says her parents were nothing but selfish and that they don’t talk anymore.  Nedley asks if it is because of who she is.  “Yeah, a cop” Nicole says.  Nedley tells her that when he heard she had joined the police academy, he couldn’t resist offering up the post.  Nicole says when she saw the post, she knew she had to take it and that is where she was meant to be.  “Everything good I have in my life now, is because I came back to the Ghost River Triangle.” Nicole says with tears in her eyes.  Nedley pauses and looks at her.  “You’re like a daughter….to me.”  He replies.
Nicole starts to cry and gives him a big hug.  He has tears in his eyes too.  “Thank you.  You are a tough act to follow.”  Nicole tells him.  Nedley just looks at her and says, “I’m not going anywhere.  Not if you really need me.  Congratulations Sheriff Haught.  You’ve earned it.”
Wynonna returns home to find Waverly at the table crying and holding a letter.  “She’s gone.”  Waverly tells her sister.  “She’s gone to try to find Julian.”  Waverly gets up and Wynonna holds her little sister.
Waverly cries and says that they had just had a wonderful Christmas together and it was so nice.  Wynonna tells her that they can spend their entire lives trying to figure out why that woman does what she does….and they have.  Wynonna is facing the table and sees there is a letter from Momma just for her.
Wynonna has read the letter and is headed outside.  She stops short on the porch, startled to see Doc standing in front yard.
“Good evening” Doc says with a tip of his hat.  He comes up onto the porch.  “I come bearing gifts” he says, handing Wynonna a handkerchief with something in it.  Wynonna opens it and is surprised to see Bulshar’s ring.  Doc tells her it should protect her in the upcoming battle.  Wynonna asks him how he got it as Nicole was the last one to have it.
“Details are a little foggy.  You know how I like to day drink” he tells her.  “Why don’t you keep it?”  Wynonna asks.  “Anyone ever tell you not to look a gift horse in the mouth?” Doc replies not really giving a definite answer.
Wynonna changes the subject.  “Did you spend the day with my mother?”
“Well, she essentially treated me like her Ober.” Doc says
“Uber.”  Wynonna corrects him.
“What she told me may require some explanation.” Doc says to Wynonna coming forward.
“She thought so too” as she looks at the letter and Doc reaches for it, she pulls away.  “Lemme just read it to you.  ‘Dear Wynonna, Don’t trust Doc Holliday.  He is not what he says he is.’” Wynonna looks at Doc after each sentence.
“Did she also say she set Bobo free from the well?”  Doc asks, clearly trying to steer clear of where this conversation is going.
“She does love to burn a place down before she runs.” Wynonna says, not really acknowledging the Bobo being free thing.
“The recklessness of her actions- I do not see how she could remain here and keep you safe.”  Doc says, once again trying to steer the conversation away from the inevitable.
“Just tell me what you did.”  Wynonna demands straight faced, not losing eye contact with Doc.
Doc’s face at this point is pure fear.  His eyes are wide as he looks at Wynonna.
“Who are you?”  Wynonna asks him when he doesn’t answer about what he did.
“Who I’ve always been.”  Doc says with a hint of pleading in his voice.
“Don’t talk to me in riddles!”  Wynonna says raising her voice and getting frustrated.
“How should I talk to you then?”  Doc asks her
“Like you give a shit about me!”  she yells at him.
Then it really starts…..
“YOU refused ME!”  Doc hisses at her.  Wynonna slaps his face.  Well, Wynonna THAT IS TRUE.
“Wynonna, I DO care….” Doc says, but gets another slap across his face from Wynonna before he could continue.
Doc gets closer to her.  “You are runnin’ out of road woman!” You can see his eyes starting to water.  More likely from the emotions running raw than the slaps.
“Tell me what you are.”  Wynonna demands.  Doc doesn’t answer.
Wynonna slaps him a third time and this time the vampire anger emerges.  His eyes glowing and his teeth bared and a deep growl.  He suddenly stops himself, covers his mouth as he calms down and backs up away from her.
“Kate.  You let her do this?”  Wynonna asks.  Doc has visible tears in his eyes.  “She had you.”  Wynonna adds.
“It was the only way.”  Doc says……a lame excuse.
“What about us?  What about….ALICE?”  Wynonna asks him now crying herself.  “What would our daughter say if she knew her father sold his soul?!”  Wynonna demands of him, digging the knife deeper.
“You, of all people, should understand the sacrifices that have been made.”  Doc says.  Again….not a great excuse dude.
“You wanted your immortality that badly, you…..selfish asshole?!!”  Wynonna screams at him tears streaming down her face.
“You watch your mouth!”  Doc yells, coming at her again without the vampire face.  Again, he quickly recedes realizing he snapped again.
“BITE ME.”  Wynonna says right in his face.
She starts to back towards the door.  “There are some…..advantages…..to you being a vampire”  she says to him.  Doc, tears in his eyes, shakes his head.  He knows what she is getting at.  “John Henry Holliday,  you’re not welcome in my home anymore.”  Wynonna says…sealing his fate of being able to step foot inside the house ever again.
Doc, tears running down his face, tries to plead with her.  “Don’t do this.”
Wynonna turns and opens the door.  “No, YOU did this” she says as she steps inside and shuts the door.
Wynonna takes a few steps inside and stops.  She is totally stunned by this, but most of all her heart is broken.
Okay….I am crying.  My heart is broken.  I love Doc and wish he and Wynonna would work this out.  I keep praying that maybe the vampirism is reversible somehow, but unlikely.  This final outcome is BOTH of their faults.  Wynonna….I mean come on!  You keep pushing away a man you love over and over again because you are afraid and don’t think you deserve him.  His wife is back in the picture.  Where the hell do you think he was going to go if he felt you didn’t want him?  You were busy screwing Charlie to try to forget your feelings!  However, Charlie is reversible.  He can be pushed out of the picture.  Whereas Doc……Doc, you were selfish as hell.  You have always worried about losing your immortality.  Even if your tuberculosis is returning, it can be cured in this day and age.  You don’t run to your wife and the second thing your do (first thing was sleeping with her) is fall for her bullshit and let her turn you.  Wynonna reacted just like I would have.
We don’t have too many episodes left, so this is going to stress me the hell out the rest of the season isn’t it?
Please….Please tell me what your thoughts are on this episode and the whole Doc / Wynonna dynamic!

“Amortentia”-Wayhaught Hogwarts AU
A potion bubbles over a low cerulean flame, which generates a low gurgling vibration, that echoes in the staunch and dimly lit potions classroom. It wasn’t long thereafter that the sound was coupled with mumbles and whispers from the students entering the room. The students all of which started out talking amongst each other now turned their noses up to the air. There was an odd aura circumventing through the students, as all of them perched themselves at the edge of their seat; unaware that they all were wondering the same thing. “Why do I smell this?”
One student, in particular, grew quite fascinated with this particular question, and this student was Waverly Earp. Waverly was a bright student, always winning her house points for her superior intellect and charming nature. She prided herself in being studious, well read, and knowing almost all the answers to questions. Yet, today was different. As she came into the classroom she became confused, not comprehending what she was experiencing. The confusion made her curiosity grow since the alluring scent of vanilla dip donuts was present but the person who smelled like them was not. Instantaneously she began to study, her dainty figures traced the words as her eyes darted from one option to the next in search of her answer. However, this only lasted a few moments before the delightful aroma of vanilla dipped donuts intensified and a tall redhead sat beside her.
“Getting ahead on today’s lesson, Waves?” the girl asked with her elbow propped up on the desk and her head resting in her hand.
“You know me, Nicole. I always like knowing before the lesson even starts” she blushes and closes the leather cover over itself.
Waverly’s chin points up as her gaze transferred from her book to Nicole.
“Hey, Nicole, were you here earlier? It’s just… You smell like vanilla dipped donuts and when I came in the room smelled like that. Did I just not notice you?” Her voices twisted and peaked at the end of her sentence as she stared up at Nicole.
Nicole simply shook her head, her short crimson hair bobbing with the motion. If Waverly had looked more closely, she might have noticed Nicole’s cheeks slightly blush. But, she did not since she was far too lost in her own thoughts.
“No?... although, now that you mention it. I came into potions smelling honey and lavender? But I was all the way across the room? How odd?..” Nicole’s voice trailed off as she looked down at Waverly, whose eyes met hers.
Waverly gazed up at Nicole’s eyes, which resembled old hickory bark but crested with gold. Her eyes became captured within Nicole’s and her words were held for ransom in her mouth. Waverly held that stare for quite some time, it didn’t appear that Nicole was at all bothered though. This capture of each other’s glances lasted only a few moments before the professor arrived. She was old, spindly, her hair was like dark black vines which tangled around the trunk of her neck. Her hands' mere twigs that appeared to be broken in many places. Nevertheless, Waverly liked her.
The aged professor spoke in an ill-fitting voice. It was smooth and pleasant, unlike her outward appearance. “Students, when you came in today, you might have been bewildered as to why you were smelling pleasant aromas. The reason for this is because of the potion, Amortentia. Can anybody tell me what that potion means?”
It only took Waverly moments to find what she was looking for. “Amortentia” she whispered under her breath as she began to dive further into her personal study. Upon her brief skimming of words, she had her answer. Hesitantly, she raised her hand, already regretting it as it hovered above there rest of the students.
“Ah yes, Ms.Earp. Please inform the class of what it is” the professor gestured with her brittle hand towards Waverly to speak.
“It’s-It’s a form of a love potion. When brewed correctly, it creates pleasant aromas that are tailored to each individual. For instance...” She stopped herself from talking, too nervous to exploit her desires and love.
“For instance, what Ms.Earp?” the professor grinned and glanced at Waverly and then at Nicole, and then back at Waverly.
“For instance, I smell whiskey, leather-bound books, cinnamon… and” a huff of air escapes her throat. The words catch in her chest but they continue to swell and eventually pool out of her mouth “Vanilla dipped donuts...” she half mumbles.
Waverly felt her face go beet red and didn’t even hear the professor grant her ten points for her house. All she heard was the pounding of her heart and her hitched breaths, and without her even knowing it she leaves the classroom.
She might have been out there for three minutes or maybe thirty, all she knew was that she just confessed her love to Nicole Haught. A wave of regret and embarrassment washed over her and all she could think about was how she could explain this to Nicole. All she ever wanted was to tell Nicole how she felt, but this was not the way she wished it were to go. Waverly must have been deep in her thoughts since she didn’t hear the footsteps coming up to her. She looked down at the pair of shoes next to her, she knew who’s they belonged to. Who else would have such sick kicks at Hogwarts?
“Waves?” the gentle voice trickled into her ear and ran chills down her spine. “Waves, are you alright?” Nicole precariously reached out and places a hand on the small of Waverly’s back.
Waverly didn’t bother to move away though, she enjoyed it. She longed, even craved this kind of moment with Nicole. She just wished it was on her own terms.
“Yea… yea. I’m just kind of embarrassed” she clears her throat and looks to Nicole, her eyes searching for resentment, disgust, or fear. But all she saw was love, warmth, and caring.
“Well… if it makes you feel any better, the professor made me tell everyone what I smelled. And you know what I said?” she reached out and tilted Waverly’s chin up so she could look at her in the eyes. “I said I smelled, rain, peppermint, lavender, and honey.” she grinned at Waverly, and Waverly’s lips curled into a childish smile. “Hey, how about we ditch the rest f potions and we go to the courtyard. You can teach me about this potion yourself. Just me and you. How does that sound?”
Waverly excitedly nodded and without a second thought took Nicole’s hand as the two began to walk to the courtyard.
(I apologize for never making this fanfic. Life got in the way. But! I am back and taking requests. Also, thanks for reading!)

A fresh round of snow floated down from the gray sky in thick, fuzzy flakes, turning even the drabness of downtown Purgatory into a winter wonderland.
“Remind me again why we can’t just get a fake one?” Wynonna grumbled as she hopped out of Waverly’s Jeep, zipping up her leather jacket and winding a maroon scarf that Waverly had knitted tighter around her neck. “The needles and sap get everywhere.”
“Because Alice loves real trees,” Waverly explained as she locked her car, even though Wynonna already knew the answer. “And you want to surprise her when she comes home from school.”
“Right, right,” Wynonna sighed, her breath puffing out in a cloud of white. “At some point we’re gonna have to teach the kid she can’t always get everything she wants.”
“She knows that.” Waverly shook her head in exasperation, the tassels of her winter hat swishing to and fro. It wasn’t Christmas without Wynonna’s usual Scrooge-like facade, which always melted in the face of her daughter’s holiday excitement, like clockwork. Grumpy at the beginning of December. But by the end of the month, Wynonna could give Santa Claus a run for his money with her level of holiday cheer. “But if you’d like to deny my only niece, be my guest.”
Wynonna gave an exaggerated scowl and kept marching toward the town square where Lou, the self-proclaimed “Pine Baron” of the Pine Barrens, had set up his annual Christmas tree lot in the town square. Waverly followed with a knowing smile, burying her cold hands inside the pockets of her puffy turquoise coat. She had forgotten her mittens at Shorty’s the night before in the wake of the fiasco with the beer taps.
Inwardly groaning, she tried not to think about it, and instead focused on catching up with Wynonna. They approached the lot, delineated by red-and-green pennant banners strung up with twinkling yellow fairy lights. The falling snow coated the rows of evergreen trees like powdered sugar, while the air was filled with the buzzing sound of chainsaws and the whir of palletizers that wrapped the trees in plastic nets.
“Are you gonna help us decorate the damn thing, or do you have a shift at Shorty’s?” Wynonna asked as she eyed a 2.5-meter tree that towered over them both.
“Gus gave me the night off,” Waverly said, burying her nose in her scarf.
Wynonna raised an eyebrow. “Was it really that bad last night?”
Waverly’s head whipped around so fast, she was surprised she didn’t pull a muscle. “You know about that?”
“I know all, Baby Girl,” Wynonna smirked, walking toward the Blue Spruces.
“In other words, Jeremy told you,” Waverly concluded.
“Threaten his Optimug Prime, and he sings like a canary.” Wynonna chuckled, examining the spiky needles of a Norway Spruce. “Kissing the Five-O. I know pretty much anyone is an upgrade than Champ the Chump, but didn’t I tell you that the law ain’t nothing but trouble.”
“You’re the law.”
“Exactly.”
Waverly covered her face with her hands, but the bite of the frozen air had her quickly shoving them back in her pockets. “And you’re currently boinking her partner.” Avoid and deflect. It was the Earp way.
“I’m not boinking Dolls,” Wynonna protested, tugging at a White Pine and wrinkling her nose at its long, flimsy needles. “It’s…complicated.”
“Uh huh.” Waverly stopped by a rack that displayed hanging boughs of holly and fresh wreaths. She tried, and most likely failed, to not blush when she saw bundles of mistletoe.
“I’m gonna go down that way.” Wynonna chucked a thumb further down the aisle. “Why don’t you pick out a wreath?” She too noticed the mistletoe. “And try to keep your lips to yourself if you can.”
Waverly rolled her eyes, but nodded with a grateful sigh, letting Wynonna wander off and giving them both an out from discussing the previous night and their love lives, or lack thereof. The red ribbons and white berries of the mistletoe caught her eye, and her thoughts drifted back to Nicole Haught and the kiss. God, that kiss. The memory alone made her pulse quicken.
That is, until she remembered the beer and her soaked shirt. Waverly cringed in embarrassment, recalling how everyone’s attention had been drawn to her, including Nedley and Nicole’s. She had retreated upstairs, avoiding Nicole’s concerned gaze. By the time Waverly had finished changing her clothes, the sheriff and his newest deputy were nowhere to be seen. Waverly wasn’t sure if she had been relieved or disappointed.
She was so lost inside her head that she didn’t notice the incoming snowball until it smacked the side of her head and exploded in a shower of fluffy crystals.
Shrieking in surprise, Waverly whirled around in time to watch Wynonna disappear behind a Douglas fir. She immediately gave chase, an excited grin stretching across her face. Waverly scooped up a handful of snow with her bare hands and formed it into a sphere, ignoring the way the cold stung her skin. She sprinted past several rows of trees toward the end of the lot, boots slipping a bit on the frozen ground, hoping to catch Wynonna unawares. Waverly rounded a corner ahead of Wynonna–she couldn’t have timed it any better–and lobbed her snowball as hard as she could toward where she was sure Wynonna would emerge.
Except the person who came into view wasn’t Wynonna at all, and Waverly’s projectile knocked a white Stetson clear off their head.
Correction: her head.
“Shit!” Waverly smacked her own forehead with the icy heel of her hand. She rushed forward and froze when the woman turned around.
“Waverly Earp, you sure do have a way of saying hello,” Nicole Haught drawled as she bent down to pick up her hat. “Though I might have preferred last night’s greeting instead.” She winked as she brushed snow off the top.
Waverly blushed immediately. “Officer Haught, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to…”
“Waverly,” the redhead interrupted gently. “It’s okay. No harm, no foul.” She placed her hat back on her head, settling it just over her earmuffs. “Picking out a tree?”
“Yeah, um, with my sister.” Who was now nowhere to be found. Waverly swore she was going to murder Wynonna. Or, at the very least, find all of her hidden whiskey bottles and pour their contents down the drain. “We’re gonna surprise her daughter with it later.”
“That’s sweet.” Nicole’s cheeks dimpled as she smiled, and Waverly’s knees weakened. “See anything you like?”
Waverly most definitely saw something she liked, unable to stop herself from running her eyes over Nicole’s uniform. In her khaki pants and dark blue bomber jacket, Nicole looked even more striking than she did the night before. Shaking her head, Waverly cleared her throat and averted her gaze back to the silver-dusted trees.
“Oh, you know, can’t go wrong with a classic Noble Fir and all,” she reached out and awkwardly swatted a nearby branch.
“I prefer the Fraser Fir myself,” Nicole said. “Not as bulky.”
“Also a solid pick.” Waverly inclined her head forward. “Actually my sister’s selecting the tree. I’m supposed to get the wreath.”
“Ah,” Nicole nodded, pointing a gloved hand toward where Waverly had come. “I think I saw them that way.” She led the way back and Waverly followed, keeping to herself that she had already been there.
“Are you scoping out a tree?” Waverly asked as they walked side-by-side, shoulders brushing every so often when they moved closer to avoid other shoppers. She clenched her fists inside her coat, wishing for the millionth time she hadn’t forgotten her mittens.
“Me? No. Just out on patrol.” Nicole said “The sheriff sends his regards, by the way. He didn’t get to wish you a goodnight yesterday because ol’ John Hubbard thought there were elves running around in his attic.”
Waverly giggled. “Was it a family of squirrels again?”
“Not exactly a town secret, I’m guessing.”
“Every holiday it’s something,” Waverly confirmed. “On Easter, it’s bunnies. Valentine’s Day, cupids. Halloween, goblins.”
Nicole chuckled. “Can’t wait for that.” She fell silent for a beat as they approached the wreathes, holly, and other plants that Waverly pointedly ignored. “I’m sorry I didn’t get to say goodbye to you too.”
“Don’t be.” In actuality, Waverly was partly grateful that she didn’t have to face Nicole after embarrassing herself with the taps. “Though… you did skip out on your portion of the winnings.”
“Oh?” Nicole’s eyes darted toward the mistletoe and Waverly swore Nicole’s cheeks tinged a darker shade of pink. Or it could have just been the cold.
“I’ve got $50 in my wallet with your name on it.” Waverly dug into her purse, but Nicole placed a gentle hand on her wrist to stop her.
“Keep it,” Nicole said, the leather of her gloves cool and smooth against Waverly’s skin. “How ‘bout you use it to buy me a drink sometime?”
“A… a drink?” Waverly asked dumbly, flustered from Nicole’s lingering touch. Was Nicole asking her out on a date?
“A cappuccino, maybe? Or a hot cocoa.” Nicole unzipped her jacket halfway, reached inside, and pulled out a business card. She hesitated, blinked, then offered it to Waverly. “Call me.”
Before Waverly could react, Lou bumped into her shoulder from behind and into Nicole, who steadied her with a pair of strong hands on her shoulders.
“I beg your pardon, Ms. Earp,” Lou apologized. “Don’t mind me. Just gotta put up the latest shipment.” Using a long pole, he hung several bunches of mistletoe on a line just above Waverly and Nicole’s heads.
They caught each other’s gazes and couldn’t help but laugh a bit at the unexpected awkwardness. Waverly straightened out. “Thanks.”
Dropping her arms, Nicole quirked up an eyebrow. “So that drink?”
Waverly took a deep breath. “You’ve got yourself a deal.” Her fingers shook slightly as she accepted the card and slipped it inside her pocket. Nicole frowned slightly.
“Your hands must be freezing.” Nicole pulled off her gloves, tucked them into her pockets, and cupped Waverly’s ice-cold hands in her own.
Nicole’s grasp was oh so warm, thawing Waverly’s chilled fingers. “I’m okay, really,” Waverly said, breath hitching as Nicole brought her hands to her lips. Nicole slowly breathed out heat before placing a soft kiss to the knuckles of each hand and quickly covering them with her gloves.
“Oh,” Waverly exhaled in surprise. “I can’t take these…”
“You can and you will,” Nicole said in a manner that invited no argument. “I’ve got a spare set in my cruiser. You can give these back when we go get that cocoa. Deal?”
Waverly smiled so widely her cheeks ached. “Deal.”
With one last grin, Nicole tipped her hat forward and bid Waverly a good day, disappearing down the sidewalk with a noticeable pep in her step. Waverly watched her go, convinced she was going to melt right then and there on the spot, until another snowball smacked her right between the eyes.
“D-dammit Wynonna!” Waverly shivered as she brushed the snow from her face.
“Thought you could use some cooling off!” Wynonna cackled in the distance, dashing off once again. Waverly once again gave pursuit, forming a snowball between her warm leather gloves, Nicole’s business card burning in her pocket.

Let's write about the little things not talked about as much that I want to talk about in 2x10. Jeremy is such a good scientist. And I don't mean that he's super smart, but that he has a really strong ethic. He won't plagiarize and he won't use unwilling (or blackmailed to willing) test subject. And that's amazing. Dolls is so caring. Remember when he was so dismissive of everybody at the very beginning? Now he's running around trying his best to save Nicole, who previously he would probably just consider collateral damage and move on. Doc was unwilling to cover Wynonna's ass while she hunts down the Widows, but as soon as Wynonna mentioned Nicole is dying, he gets up right away and forgets that he's drunk and isn't at his best. He's gonna help save her goddamit. Can we just talk about Nedley? Bless that man. He cares so damn much about the Earp sisters and Nicole Haught, but in that grumpy way that a lot of men does. Like "ugh Wynonna is such a pain in the ass" but continues to lend support and even get beaten to a pulp just because Wynonna asked him to protect something. His relationship with Nicole? Ugh, so underrated sometimes. I read a fic where Chrissy, Nedley's daughter thinks he loves Nicole better than his own daughter and that probably has a ring of truth in it. I know this is a small town but how many bosses not only knows where their employee's house is, but also who her cat is and cares enough about the damn cat to buy her a scratching post? Remember the first time Nicole was hospitalized and Nedley offered to feed the cat? Jesus Christ this man cares. (Also side note, Nicole has been hospitalized twice in less than a year.) Nicole, you are not pure and innocent and you also have your faults and secrets and I LOVE that. Sure I hated it when I watched it, but then I imagine all the potential stories that come out of it and it makes me giddy. Rosita, Rosita. Poor baby girl. She just wanted to be good. She just wanted to help. Her heart broken face when she realizes that Wynonna thinks of her as just a revenant to be killed instead of a potential friend. It breaks my heart. When Rosita said you didn't have to blackmail me, you could've just asked, I wanted to grab Wynonna by the shoulders and tell her not everything is in black and white. Also Jeremy said nobody cares about Rosita's body. Speak for yourself Jeremy. I know you're super gay but there is at least one person that cares about her body and it's me- I mean Doc. Doc cares about her body. And last, Waverly trying to make Jeremy feel better when she's probably the one who feels the worst in that room? Baby girl, stop putting everyone else on top of the list and start taking care of yourself

just another tuesday
It’s shaping up to be another uneventful, forgotten birthday for Waverly Earp. Purgatory is nothing if not consistent in that regard. Because why hope for anything more after 22 years? Except someone did remember this time. And she went out of her way to make it special for her favorite Earp. Also on AO3. Approximately 3,357 words.
Waverly Earp angrily scrubbed the counter of Shorty’s bar, desperate to work away the pinpricks of heat lurking in her eyes. It was so frustrating. She was fine a minute ago. Just another day at work, the same lunch rush, the same familiar faces… It was fine.
Same old, same old.
She scrubbed harder, thinking of her stupid sister Wynonna and stupid Deputy Marshall Dolls off in the woods doing God Knows What with some stupid Revenants (without Waverly). They’d been gone since yesterday with barely more than a “don’t wait up” and a spin of Peacemaker.
Just another Tuesday in Purgatory.
Except it wasn’t another stupid Tuesday in stupid Purgatory.
It was just another disappointing Tuesday in Purgatory. Because why wouldn’t it be?
No one had remembered. Again.
Her birthday. Her Goddamn birthday was today and no one had remembered.
Story of Waverly’s life.
She’d tried a few different tactics over the years. Junior high was spent befriending Chrissy Nedley and Stephanie Jones and dropping unsubtle hints. At least then she’d get a trip to the city or a pizza party out of it when they forgot.
High school had been full of unaffected nonchalance. She was too busy and popular to make a big deal out of her birthday. That had backfired because then everyone almost had permission to forget.
Three years of dating Champ Hardy after that had been an exercise in futility. He at least had the decency to pretend to be sorry when he forgot, and her rage on the matter guaranteed a nice dinner and new shoes.
But now? At the ripe old age of 22? Waverly was just single and tired. Tired of trying. Sure, it made her perpetually upset the entire day. Especially since she was setting herself for a test that everyone around her had perfected failing with years of practice. The small, petty glee from confirming her worst fears quickly gave way to hollow, aching disappointment.
Waverly very much hated—hated—being proven right all the time.
She was past the point of tantrums at Champ or sad looks at a very tired Gus. And she couldn’t even get mad at Wynonna who was off trying to save the world. There was no outlet for her anger or sadness so it just sat in her gut, festering quietly.
A low, familiar voice off to Waverly’s right made her jump. “I think you’re gonna start a fire on that counter from rubbing so hard.”
Officer Nicole Haught stood sheepishly at the entrance, white hat in one hand. She held up another hand in surrender. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Waverly smiled and tossed the towel into the laundry hamper below the bar. “It’s fine. And at least then I’d get the rest of the day off.”
The other woman nodded, her face half-scrunched in consideration. “True, but only cuz you’d be in lock-up. Something something arson something insurance fraud.”
A light, slightly bitter laugh from Waverly. “Right.” She made a mock-scowl before shaking a theatric fist. “You damn cops are always one step ahead of me.”
Nicole’s answering breath of a laugh accompanied a wide, dimpled smile. She slid into the barstool closest to Waverly, Stetson placed on the counter. A crumpled $5 appeared from a breast pocket. “Still serving coffee?
Waving off the cash, Waverly nodded and bounced over to the coffee pot. She scrutinized the small collection of mugs until she found one that met her very high standards for this particular customer before pouring.
The distraction was welcome. Waverly had briefly forgotten that hollow feeling in her chest and found herself smiling.
Waverly checked the dangling watch on her wrist before passing over the steaming mug along with a few packets of sugar (the bowl of one-hit creamers following close behind). “Isn’t it kind of early for coffee? Or kind of late?”
“Late,” Nicole gruffly confirmed as she assembled a pair of sugars and creamers into her mug. There were deep circles under the woman’s eyes and her normally tight French braid was loose in places at the back. “Just got off night shift. Running on fumes. You’re my last hope of making it home instead of sleeping in my cruiser.” She nodded her thanks and inched the crumpled fiver closer to Waverly again.
“Anything exciting happen?” Waverly asked, still ignoring the payment.
The woman took a long, deep sip of the (now medium-brown) coffee. Nicole made a satisfied sighing noise before opening her eyes and smiling back at Waverly. “Caught a punk this morning, red-handed. Vandalizing cars. So very, very high school.”
“Thank you for keeping our streets safe from these monsters,” Waverly replied solemnly with a wink.
Nicole stiffened, feigning offense. “I’ll have you know they showed no remorse. The world is a safer place now.”
“I believe it.” It was meant to be sarcastic, but Waverly found she meant it genuinely.
The Officer noticed and smiled back. “How are you on this beautiful afternoon in Purgatory?”
Waverly had to suppress a scowl. How quickly that all came back. “Fine. Just another Tuesday.” She went back to wiping down the stack of glasses fresh from the dishwasher.
A moment of silence passed before the clink of the coffee mug on the counter. “Is it?” Nicole asked seriously.
“Is it what?”
“Just another Tuesday?”
The patient, serious way Nicole phrased that question… it made Waverly’s chest ache. She was so very tired of holding it all in all the time. Here was someone actually asking for once.
Waverly spun on her heel and started to open her mouth, but hesitated. Nicole just sat on her barstool, mug in hand, peering back at her with focus. It was… nice.
Instead, Waverly closed her mouth with a sigh. She didn’t want to ruin it. She didn’t want to explode all over this nice friend who was just being nice. She didn’t want Nicole’s pity. She didn’t want Nicole to see her cry. She didn’t want to look like the child she felt she was in front of Nicole. She wanted Nicole to think she was—
What?
Waverly bit her lip to cut off that train of thought and went back to the glasses. She managed to lie with only a small strain in her voice. “Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course,” Waverly returned automatically, her mask of politeness slipping into place. Part of her hated putting up that particular wall around Nicole, who was obviously trying to be nice. But Waverly just didn’t have the energy to get into it right now.
“Okay, if you’re sure.” Nicole sat in companionable silence with Waverly, her coffee only taking a few minutes to consume. Waverly was worried she’d be irritated, but the woman’s presence was surprisingly calming. Nicole didn’t try to fill the void with chitchat. She just tapped at her phone and allowed Waverly the space to continue her busywork.
It was getting harder and harder for Waverly to stay silent. Her resolve was weakening with each clean glass she tucked back into the cabinet. Just as Waverly was approaching her breaking point, she heard the scraping of a barstool.
Sweeping her Stetson onto her head, Nicole pushed the coffee mug back towards Waverly. An obvious coaster of a $5 bill was tucked underneath it. She waved her phone at Waverly. “I’m gonna head home. I’ll send you some Snapchats of the trick I taught Calamity Jane, yea?”
“CJ wearing your hat is not a trick, Nicole…” Waverly trailed off in mock-warning but she nodded. She found she loved trading pictures with Nicole. Even about the stupidest shit. It was nice.
“It is when you know how long it takes her to sit still with the damn thing on, Waves.” Nicole smiled warmly as she tucked the phone into a back pocket. She tilted her hat at Waverly in salute. “Have a wonderful Tuesday, Waverly Earp.” There was a pause and it looked like Nicole wanted to say something more.
But at Waverly’s curious head-tilt, the moment passed and Nicole only turned on her heel.
And just like every time Nicole Haught left Shorty’s, Waverly found herself sighing. She didn’t know why she did that, like Waverly had to let out all the air in her lungs. It didn’t make sense.
And despite Nicole’s brief visit… Waverly found she felt a little better. The work of getting Shorty’s flipped for the evening went by surprisingly quickly. Why, Waverly even managed to not remember her birthday every other minute.
Just every other other minute.
Around sundown, Aunt Gus patted Waverly’s shoulder. “Knock off, girl. It’s not gonna be busy and you should go enjoy yourself.”
“But—"
“No ‘buts.’ I can take care of things here. Get going.” Another pat as Gus pulled the apron off Waverly’s waist. Gus pressed a kiss to her niece’s temple and whispered a soft “Happy birthday.”
That almost did Waverly in. Gus had been withdrawn since Uncle Curtis had died. And growing up, she’d never been very sentimental about things like birthdays. It was… nice. It made a good heat come to Waverly’s eyes, but she held it together with a “thank you.”
As Waverly spun her keys on her finger and headed for the brightly lit alley, something stopped her. Something was different.
Her red Jeep, parked behind Gus’s truck, seemed darker somehow. Like there was someone inside it. Moving. As Waverly maneuvered around the black truck, a laugh strangled out of her throat. She had to cover her mouth as a few tears escaped down her cheeks.
The familiar Jeep was covered in white soapy polish. A big “22” on the hood, a “BIRTHDAY GIRL” over the passenger side windshield plus the sides and back had “HAPPY BIRTHDAY WAVERLY” all over in bubble letters. Whoever this was had the foresight not to cover the driver’s side windshield or side window for safety.
Inside the Jeep itself were those dark shadows from earlier. Though when Waverly approached, she could see those shadows were balloons. Her car was filled to the brim with multicolored balloons, mostly purples, reds and oranges (her favorite colors). When she opened the door, a fair number of them squeaked loudly before escaping into the bright sky.
Sticking her hand in, her arm was buried to the elbow in latex balloons (though a few silvery mylar balloons were sprinkled in with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” and “22”). Her entire car smelled of fresh latex, a very bitter scent. But Waverly didn’t care. It was… more than nice…
A giddy feeling struck Waverly’s chest, replacing the hollow one almost in a rush. It was… all she’d ever wanted. Just for someone to notice…
Who did this?
It took some effort (and a few lost balloons) for Waverly to work her way into the car and still be able to see the road. Sacrifices had to be made, but more than a few balloons survived and bounced into each other in the back seat. Inside the passenger seat was a large piñata of a red dragon along with a small envelope and a large brown envelope. The small envelope had “open me first” in a neat script.
Hmmm… That writing is… familiar…
A cheesy birthday card with a cat in a party hat read “Happy Birthday! You’re Purr-fect!” It was just as terrible as Waverly had ever hoped for. She thumbed open the card to find a short, handwritten note:
“Dear Waverly,
If you’re reading this, it means I managed to keep a straight face (but had to lie through my teeth). Sorry about that.
I didn’t know what to get you (without being super obvious) so I stuck with a few things I think you’ll like. The big envelope is from Gus, the piñata is from me. I would have left you a baseball bat too, but something tells me you’re a girl who has a big stick for hitting things with on her own.
I hope you have a good one, Waverly Earp. You’re amazing and the best part of Purgatory to me.
 Celebrating you,
- Nicole”
The envelope was from Gus?
Hefting the flat package, Waverly felt a stiff, small weight. She ripped off the pull tab and slid out a large picture frame. A normal letter envelope with a sticky note fluttered out along with the picture frame.
The black and white framed photograph showed Shorty’s, probably taken a few years ago. Featured were Shorty, Curtis and Gus along with Waverly smiling out front. Around the edges were signatures of regular patrons. Sloppy and rough “happy birthdays” lined the image margin.
But… none of them said anything. They just ate their lunches and left. Did they know?
A sticky note, again in Nicole’s neat script, said “I had to sic Nedley on the Shorty’s lunch crowd to get them to sign this after they left the bar. They were also sworn to secrecy. Apparently, he also shook them down for extra tips, too. I neither condone nor deny this behavior.”
Poking a finger into the white letter envelope, Waverly was shocked to find a neat stack of cash (mostly $5s and $1s, but a few $10s and at least one $20).
She couldn’t take it anymore. Waverly opened up Snapchat to send Nicole a message, though she briefly hesitated about waking the woman up after she’d been up all night.
She did this on purpose.
Smiling so wide her cheeks hurt, Waverly tapped out: [“You did all this?”]
There was a short wait before a response. [“I have no idea what you are referring to. I am at home. With my cat.”]
Shortly after, a picture of a ginger cat wearing Nicole’s white Stetson while socked feet could be seen at the bottom of the frame. Waverly chuckled.
It took a few seconds of thinking before something clicked about their earlier conversation.
Chewing her cheek, Waverly’s eyes narrowed suspiciously as she typed. [“Or… wait, was this the car vandal you were talking about?”] She pulled back to send a photo of her Jeep.
[“Oh yea, that punk was out of control. You should be glad she’s off the streets.”]
[“She, huh?”]
[“Yes”]
A series of Snapchats suddenly streamed into Waverly’s phone, all selfies of a certain Purgatory Sheriff’s Deputy.
The first was Nicole standing in front of Waverly’s Jeep with a cup of coffee in hand. Her Stetson along with a several bags of balloons, a couple of grocery bags, the dragon piñata, and a small cylinder of helium rested on the car hood.
The next showed Nicole holding Waverly’s car keys with the caption [“Don’t be mad, Gus let me have them. I promise I won’t hurt your baby!”] Her brown eyes were wide with guilt as she bit her lower lip.
Another showed Nicole blowing up balloons and cramming them into the Jeep. Then one of her sitting in the Jeep making a silly, horrified face while surrounded by balloons. The last was of Nicole holding the dragon piñata like a baby in Waverly’s passenger seat.
[“See? She was a criminal mastermind. She had to be detained.”]
Waverly replied with a small giggle. [“Truly a mad genius”]
[“Did you crack the piñata yet?”]
[“I was gonna do that when I got home.”] Though the thought of the long drive back to the Homestead made Waverly impatient... Almost irrationally impatient, like if she didn’t know what this surprise was she might burst.
[“Good. Drive safe. You’ll have to tell me what you think.”]
[“You gonna be up?”]
[“I’ll wait”]
Waverly hurried home, her foot heavy on the gas. She couldn’t stop smiling, and her face around her cheeks and eyes were starting to ache from the effort. Occasionally there were tears, too. It was better than nice.
The Homestead was empty and quiet, her big sister still on a mission. An earlier text from Wynonna just read “Happy birthday, babygirl. Left you some of that shit pizza you like in the fridge. When I get back, we are going to the city. I missed your big 2-1 pub crawl and we have lost time to make up.”
Finding the pizza, Waverly tucked a piece into her mouth while carrying the piñata, the picture and some of the balloons that said “22” (for her scrapbook) upstairs. Inside her room, Waverly grabbed her metal softball bat. She picked up the piñata to shake it. There was something large inside, but also the shuffling of a bunch of small things. What could it be?
It took about 4 solid whacks (very satisfying) to break open the dragon. A font of candy and paper spilled out, as did a large roll of something soft.
The spread of candy included little Caramilks, a couple of smooshed Coffee Crisps, and a few Cadbury chocolates (all her favorites). The unfamiliar candies in with the rest included individually wrapped cherry cordials and a sour candy she’d never heard of. She wondered if they were Nicole’s favorites. She wondered how Nicole knew her favorites.
Larger than the candy, there were also unopened packs of her favorite post-it notes she used for research. And sprinkled among the small candies were clippings of her name in the Purgatory Gazette: cheerleading successes, academic honors mentions, her Nicest Person in Purgatory photo at the Chamber of Commerce…
The large item curled in a soft roll was a t-shirt that said “Class of 2015” from the online college she’d been studying language and history. Waverly hadn’t had an official graduation, just a certificate she’d printed herself. But this felt… real. Like she hadn’t just been playing at going to college, but that she had something to really show for it.
It was just… so nice.
She hugged the t-shirt to her chest, though she spied a few water droplets darkening the fabric. Tears had started to stream down Waverly’s cheeks. From her sitting position on the floor, Waverly extracted her phone to send Nicole a Snapchat of the murdered piñata.
Almost an immediate response from Nicole. [“You killed it! Hope it felt good”]
[“It was all amazing… thank you so much”]
[“Sorry if some of that came off creepy. I just didn’t know if anyone had ever put your report card on the fridge, so to speak, to make a big deal of all the awesome stuff you’ve done and how hard you work.”]
That gave Waverly pause.
No. Not really. Especially not when Daddy was alive or Momma was there. Gus and Curtis were always so tired and unsentimental. Wonderful people, just not the type to dwell on the past.
Waverly tapped out a few winking emojis. [“Just a little creepy. But I guess it’s public record and all. Cop domain. …just stay off my Facebook and Instagram.”]
[“Yes, ma’am”]
Waverly found herself looking at the pictures of Nicole messing with her car again, that big smile returning. A nagging thought crept in.
[“When did your shift really end?”]
A very long pause.
[“……10AM.”]
Lines of motherly concern crossed Waverly’s face. [“Nicole! You worked a 12 hour shift then stuck around to do all this?! For me?”] Her eyes darted up to her own phone clock. 8PM. Almost a full 24 hours awake for Nicole.
[“That’s why we have coffee, Waves. Push ourselves to the max.”]
Waverly chewed her lower lip.
Nicole quickly tapped out a followup. [“So what’s the verdict: surprises good or surprises bad? I know how much you like to plan things.”]
[“Surprises good”] She surprised herself at how quickly she responded. Especially since she usually hated surprises. Champ’s were terrible, Gus had no patience for them, and Wynonna was one never-ending surprise that Waverly couldn’t plan a second around.
A long pause found Waverly’s thumbs hovering over the keypad. She would start to write something then immediately regret it and delete.
Nicole chimed in. [“I’m gonna go to sleep. Keep dozing off with my phone on my face. But next year, Waverly: we’ll do something you pick. Sound good?”]
[“That sounds amazing”]
[“Good night, Waverly Earp. Happy 22nd birthday. I hope it wasn’t just another Tuesday.”]
Indeed.

Insecurities
This is another piece I just needed to get out my head. I’m still getting into writing again so not sure if it’s any good but I still hope you enjoy it!
There are some things Waverly doesn’t like to discuss with Nicole regarding their relationship, but she has a way of helping her open up.
Before Waverly began exploring her sexuality, she dated a few guys – the main one being Champ Hardy. He was the one person at school who seemed to ignore the fact that she was an Earp and wouldn’t be awkward around her. Champ actually seemed to like her and that made Waverly feel really good. It was what she had always wanted – someone to like her for herself. When they began dating, things still seemed off. He didn’t pay that much attention to her unless he was touching some part of her body or kissing her – it didn’t exactly make her feel wanted. At first, it was nice that someone wanted to be around her, but then she just got sick of him touching her all the time. She realized it didn’t make her feel good and it was more of a chore than enjoyment.
Whenever they had sex, the few times they did since she avoided it as much as she could, Waverly didn’t enjoy it at all. Champ cared more about his pleasure than her own so the first time they did have sex, the pain was unbearable. She remembers crying herself to sleep once he was unconscious – luckily, they had been at his place or else Wynonna would most likely have beaten him to a pulp. Ever since that day, and the few times she had sex with him after that, she had been extremely insecure about the sexual side of the relationship. It was as though she couldn’t get sexually aroused because of the fear of the pain she had felt in the past – Champ wasn’t the only person this had happened with either. A few guys she had dated before him had the same thing happen and it was as though Waverly had gotten to the point where any person she dates just makes her insecure.
Nicole Haught. Damn, she is a completely different category. Before they met, Waverly had never even thought about being with another woman. Yes, she had seen other girls in her year and thought they were hot, but Waverly had just put it down to admiring the way they look. She never thought it was because she could be into women and the thought of that never even crossed her mind – no one she grew up with ended up being homosexual so it never even came up. Nicole changed all of that. She came in confident and was never like anyone she had met in the past. She was beautiful and once they met, Waverly started to realize she may have had feelings like this before. They were just ones she didn’t want to admit. When you grow up in a small town where everyone knows everyone it’s hard to be yourself – you have to fit in or you are cast aside. After having Wynonna taken away, she needed to fit in and it took her ages before everyone started treating her as Waverly instead of ‘the sister of the girl who shot her own father’. When people started to like her for the person she is, Waverly focused on being that person. She didn’t have time to figure out a lot of stuff so she did what everyone expected. Date guys, smile and not act weird. Nicole Haught changed all of that when she walked into Shorty’s.
Everything about Nicole and their relationship was different to anyone she had ever dated and it wasn’t just because of being with a woman for the first time. Nicole actually cared about her and never pushed her into anything she didn’t want. The redhead had never once even mentioned the sexual side to their relationship when Champ didn’t wait before mentioning it. A lot of the time she wanted to compare Nicole to Champ but there wasn’t even any competition. Nicole was everything she had wanted in a person and sometimes she had to pinch herself just to make sure she’s awake since it seems as though she walked right out of her dreams. Waverly knows how cheesy that sounds but it’s true – how did she get so lucky? They hadn’t been dating very long but even just thinking about the prospect of having sex with Nicole scared Waverly. Hell, she had to stop herself from shaking sometimes when she thinks about it. What if Nicole realizes she can’t get aroused and leaves? It would be the best thing, right? Who wants a sexless relationship?
Currently, Waverly is standing at the kitchen sink in Nicole’s apartment cleaning one of the cups she had been using. Nicole popped into work not long ago so Waverly just decided to stay and clean up a little. It was nice to have time to think without worrying about Nicole asking questions. She had done everything she could to not talk to her girlfriend about her fears – Waverly knew she wasn’t ready to be disappointed or hurt. It was all new but she really liked Nicole and wasn’t ready to let her go. Not yet.
Putting the clean mug on the draining board whilst deep in thought meant Waverly didn’t hear any doors opening and closing so when she felt a pair of arms move around her waist, she couldn’t help but tense and freeze out of habit.  She remembers when Champ used to do the same thing and it wasn’t uncommon for him to make a move and try and get her into bed.  She hated it and the fact that she couldn’t be calm even in her girlfriend’s apartment wasn’t something to be proud of. Waverly felt a pair of familiar soft lips against her jaw helping her to calm down a little before she allowed herself to relax leaning back into the familiar embrace.
“It’s only me, baby,” Nicole whispered into her ear before pressing her lips against Waverly’s temple. “I’d be very worried if it wasn’t since I locked the door behind me when I left.”
Waverly bites her lip nodding before drying her hands and tracing her fingers along Nicole’s arms. “You just surprised me, that’s all.”
She closed her eyes enjoying the way Nicole is holding her when she feels herself being turned around. Opening her eyes, Waverly is met by her girlfriend who is giving her a warm smile which is definitely helping her relax a little more. Waverly moves her hands up Nicole’s arms locking her fingers behind her neck. Nicole’s hands remain on her waist before pulling her closer so their bodies are pressed against each other. It makes Waverly a little nervous but she’s trying her best not to show it.
“Waves – you okay?”
She doesn’t process Nicole is talking to her until she notices her mouth moving.  Smiling, Waverly nodded her head in response not wanting to alarm the redhead.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Waverly asked, leaning up pressing her lips against Nicole’s trying to distract her. “I’m just happy, that’s all.”
Nicole raises her eyebrow pulling back a little. It alarms Waverly wondering what is going on when Nicole takes her hands in her own stroking the skin with her thumbs.  Waverly feels her heart-pounding – she isn’t sure what Nicole is thinking and that really doesn’t help. Nicole pulls her hand walking slowly towards the table sitting down on one of the seats pulling Waverly between her legs causing the brunette to smile. She loves the small things the redhead does and it’s all just to make her smile. Waverly’s hands go to Nicole’s hair taking the braid out running her fingers through her hair enjoying the softness of her girlfriend’s hair between her fingers.
“God that feels so much better.” Nicole admitted with a sigh leaving her lips. “I hate how I have to have my hair for work. It pulls on it so much.”
“I love your hair, but I will admit – I prefer it down.” Waverly moves her fingers until they get to the ends of Nicole’s hair. “I love running my fingers through it and it’s always super soft.”
Grinning, Nicole moves her hands to the back of Waverly’s legs with a smile. “You know you can talk to me, right? About anything.”
Waverly looks down nodding her head. “Yeah – yeah, of course.”
“Do you though? I mean – you did date Champ Hardy and he doesn’t really seem like a boy who let you talk to him about anything.”
Nicole was right – as per usual. Champ didn’t listen to her issues and pretty much just laughed when she was upset about anything. It wasn’t as though she didn’t trust Nicole, she did, it was just why should she believe Nicole wouldn’t do the same thing. Champ was the reason her insecurities came out and now it could affect her relationship with Nicole too. Her head is packed with so many things currently that she doesn’t notice Nicole pull her closer so she’s sat on her lap. Waverly feels fingers on her back jolting her back to reality.
“Waverly…talk to me.”
Waverly shakes her head looking down at her lap. “You wouldn’t understand.”
She puts her focuses on her fingers in her lap when a finger goes underneath her chin lifting her head so their eyes meet. She sees a twinkle in her eyes she hasn’t ever seen in anybody she’s dated in the past. Waverly just wants to run but she knows Nicole wants her to open up. Is she ready for that though? What if Nicole just acts like Champ? Of course, Waverly doesn’t always compare the both of them, but it’s a possibility for sure.
“I can be surprising,” Nicole said, with a smile. “Try me. I’m all ears.”
Waverly sighed looking down before looking back at Nicole being pulled in by her gaze. She knows she can trust Nicole and they do say facing your fears is supposed to be good for you. Waverly cups her girlfriend’s cheek stroking it with her thumb whilst she tries to get her words together. She can’t believe how soft Nicole’s skin feels – gosh, she really does need to focus.
“So, you know I dated Champ?”
Nicole groans nodding her head moving a hand to Waverly’s leg. “Don’t remind me, Waves.”
“Well – I don’t know how to tell you this – but I’ve never – well – you know,” Waverly mumbles trying her best not to say it out loud. She already feels herself going red.
Nicole raises her eyebrow in confusion. “You’ve never had sex?”
“What? No! I’ve had sex before. Well, I’ve had sex with a guy – Champ to be exact – but I’ve never really – he was…”
Taking Waverly’s hand, Nicole kisses her hand softly. “Take a breather and continue when you’re ready.”
Sighing, Waverly doesn’t feel as though she will ever get out what she wants to say. How do you tell your girlfriend you’re worried she won’t turn you on? How do you tell someone you’ve never been aroused by your previous partners? It is so embarrassing. She’s avoided telling anyone and, frankly, she doesn’t want to tell Nicole but she’s insistent. Of course, Nicole would notice when something is bothering her – she notices things about her a lot more than Champ did.
“Don’t judge me,” Waverly said before taking a breath looking at Nicole. “In my past relationships, I’ve never got – you know – turned on.”
Nicole’s fingers trace over her thigh in a comforting manner. “Never?”
“Never. The first time Champ and I had sex was unbearable. I ended up crying myself to sleep once I knew he was already gone. He only cared about his pleasure so since then I’ve – I just don’t want you to be disappointed.”
“I won’t be disappointed, Waverly,” Nicole assured her cupping her cheek with a smile. “You know why?”
“I’m sure you will be but enlighten me.”
Nicole chuckles shaking her head. “Baby, do you really think all I care about is sex? I mean, I’m pretty sure this is the first time we’ve even spoken about this.”
“I know and I also know you’re different to anyone I’ve dated previously, but I just -” Waverly drifted off shaking her head. “I actually care about losing you, Nicole.”
Looking down at their fingers, she notices Nicole entwine them together enjoying the feeling she gets just by holding Nicole’s hand. She enjoys the small things and that is what makes their relationship so special. It’s not all about sex and they could literally just sit here all day and talk without either of them getting bored. Well, she certainly wouldn’t get bored anyway. Smiling, she leans against Nicole wrapping her free arm around her girlfriend’s neck trying to forget about the insecurities her head is coming up with. Everything is so much easier with Nicole. She feels a kiss to her shoulder causing a smile to form on her lips.
“You won’t lose me, Waverly Earp. Never.”
“Never is a very long time, Officer Haught.”
Nicole grins nodding her head. “It is indeed. But I want to explain something to you – I know why you’re scared.”
“Yes, because I don’t want us to finally get intimate and have me ruin it.”
Waverly is surprised when she sees her girlfriend shake her head again. “No – what you are really scared of is the fact you’ve never slept with a woman before so you think your body is going to react the same way it did when you were with a boy-man.”
Waverly chuckles. “I cannot believe you still remember the way I described Champ.”
“Ssh – that name is not to be spoken about in this intimate discussion,” Nicole said putting a finger to her lips. “Now, I want you to know something. I know you are insecure, baby – I’ve noticed this about you and I find it adorable. However, the intimacy between us will be completely different. You know why?”
Waverly shakes her head in response. “Because we care about each other?”
“Well I was going to say because we’re women, but your answer works too,” Nicole responds winking at her girlfriend causing Waverly to laugh nudging her playfully with her shoulder. “See? You have nothing to worry about and it’s not even something you need to be even thinking about yet. When you’re ready, you’ll know.”
Looking at Nicole, Waverly couldn’t believe how lucky she got. Leaning in, she brushes her lips against Nicole’s not being able to stop herself from smiling as her girlfriend kisses back. Even though she has a lot of insecurities to deal with, Nicole is always going to be there to help her deal with them. And even if she can’t always help her feel better, at least Waverly knows she will always be there with her arms open.
“How do you always know what to say?” Waverly asked, moving her other arm to join the one already around Nicole’s neck locking her fingers together. Nicole presses her lips against Waverly’s with a smile.
“Someone has to make the famous Waverly Earp smile - I’m honored it’s me,” Nicole answered standing up lifting Waverly in the process before setting her down wrapping her arms around Waverly’s waist. “So, I was thinking we could just hang out here tonight. I’ve got an early start tomorrow and I know you have a morning shift.”
Waverly grins nodding her head. “I think that sounds fantastic. Is Calamity Jane joining us?”
“Of course – I know how much you love that cat.”
Shrugging her shoulders, Waverly agrees. “You mean she loves me more than you.”
“That is only because you coddle her too much,” Nicole accuses, shaking her head with a smirk before kissing Waverly softly. “However, I’m glad you get along with her. You should see the way she reacted to my ex-girlfriend.”
Waverly shakes her head biting her lip motioning to the door. “Movie night?
“It should be me asking you that after the way you’ve been feeling lately.”
“Well I’m asking you – in your apartment – to have a movie night with me; your girlfriend.”
Nicole laughs nodding her head wrapping Waverly up in a hug.
“That sounds perfect.”
Waverly forgot all about how insecure she had been feeling and instead pulled her girlfriend out of the kitchen and into the living room sitting down on the couch. Nicole joined her with an arm wrapping around her shoulder turning on the tv.
Waverly couldn’t keep the smile off her face.

The Ex
Nicole’s ex-girlfriend comes into town to visit and Waverly is not happy at how close the two still are.
“Wave, it is not that big a deal,” Nicole said with a nervous chuckle, holding up her hands in surrender. “Please just calm down and think about this rationally.”
Waverly huffed and crossed her arms. “Really? You want me to calm down about this? Your ex, your first love has rolled into town and just decided to say hey with no kind of alternate plans?”
Nicole shook her head in earnest. “Babe, no, that’s not it at all. Look, she and I were close even before we dated, so even after we broken up--”
Wynnona from where she stood in the corner hissed in sympathetic pain and took a swig of her beer. “Wrong thing to say, Haughtstuff.”
“Wait, wait, are you telling me that even after this girl broke your heart, you continued to be friends?” Waverly cried in disbelief.
Nicole winced and rubbed the back of her neck. “Well, when you say it like that, it doesn’t sound great...”
“You think?” Wynonna chuckled from her front row seat.
“Shut it!” the couple shouted in unison.
“Look, babe, just let me explain? Please?”
Waverly sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Okay. I trust you, Nic. So explain--”
Nedley walked over the where the girls were having their... disagreement.“Hey, Haught, some girl wants to see you. Was wonderin’ if you were still on for dinner.”
Waverly’s face became stone and Nicole looked like she had seen a ghost. Waverly straightened and her jaw was set, eyes fixed in a glare that could kill.
“Hey, Haughtstuff?” Wynonna whispered. Nicole glanced over at where the older Earp was standing. “I’d make my daring escape right now if I were you.”
Nicole backed away slowly from where Waverly was clearly trying to keep her composure as she grabbed her jacket and practically sprinted out the door.
“Wynonna?”
“Yeah, baby girl?”
“Two things.”
“If murder is one of them--”
“I need a flamethrower, alcohol, and a place that I can shoot at things and probably not kill them.”
“Oh, thank God. Alright, let’s go get the booze first.”
Okay, so about two days earlier, everything was normal in Purgatory. Wynonna, Dolls, Doc, and Nicole were out killing revenants while Waverly stayed back to do research and recon. Everything went well, so Dolls decided to treat everyone to Chinese as a mini celebration.
Wynonna was testing how accurate the two men were with rubber bands by setting up a mini shooting range to see both how far away they could hit, and the smallest item, while Waverly and Nicole were cuddling and watching the two men try to outdo the other.
A tentative knock on the door froze everyone in their places as their hands went to their sidearms.
Nicole eased her way to the door, ready to draw her gun at any moment should the need arise...
As she swung the door open...
“Oh my god! Kara!” she exclaimed in shock as she suddenly threw her arms around the girl at the door. “How have you been? It’s been so long since I’ve seen you!”
“I’ve been great! It’s so good to see you, Nic. Sorry to bother you, I didn’t realize you were busy. I can come back some other time?”
“What? No way! C’mere, let me introduce you to some of the... characters I’ve met here in Purgatory.”
Nicole moved out of the way to reveal a girl with long blonde hair, beautiful blue eyes, and a smile that put practically everyone else’s to shame.
“Guy, I want you to meet Kara. She’s an old friend back from the city I used to live in. Kara, this is Wynonna, Henry, Dolls, and my girlfriend Waverly.”
“Nice to meet you,” Waverly said with a smile, the first one to put out her hand in greeting. “Ooh, you’ve got quite the grip there, Kara.”
A flash of something sparked in Kara’s eyes before it was replaced by embarrassment. “Oh! Well, you know, I used to work as an assistant so I got a lot of handshakes, and a lot of quick writing needed to be done so--”
“What do you do now?” Dolls asked with eyes narrow in almost suspicion.
“I work as a journalist for CatCo. I have a night job, but it’s not nearly as exciting. I’m glad to say, though, that I have finally been able to take some time off of my work to just relax and be somewhere other than National City.”
“How do you and Nicole know each other?” Waverly asked. The two stiffened slightly and exchanged a glance.
“Oh, we actually used to date back in high school,” Nicole said casually.
Wynonna, Doc, and Dolls all glanced over at Waverly to see her jaw clenched as her mouth tried to force itself into a friendly smile. “Really? I didn’t know that. Nicole hasn’t mentioned you before.”
“Well, I best be on my way. I do believe that there is whiskey waiting for me at Shorty’s now that a one Mister BoBo del Rey has gone out of the picture.” Doc tipped his hat to Kara while gesturing for Wynonna and Dolls to join him in his hasty escape. “Lovely to make your acquaintance, Miss Kara.”
As the door shut behind them, Nicole and Kara exchanged a confused glance. “They’re not usually quite that weird,” Nicole promised. “Hey, I’m not working tomorrow, as far as I know, and I would love to get to hang out with you more before you have to leave. Are you busy?”
Kara shook her head eagerly. “Nope, I’m in town for another day or so and I have nothing planned.”
“Great! I-”
Waverly coughed loudly, interrupting Nicole’s thought. “Sorry, I might’ve caught something from Wynonna. But, uh, Kara, tell me more about yourself and how Nicole was before Purgatory.”
Nicole cocked her head confusedly at her girlfriend, but before she could ask. Kara sat down and began to explain how she had lost her parents when she was young, and how meeting Nicole in high school was like having a rock to cling to.
And it pissed. Her. Off.
How dare she come and talk about how they were each other’s first loves, but tragically could not survive long distance and broke it off with each other? And the whole time Waverly swore she was eyeing Nicole up, especially when Nicole would interject about some kind of inside joke and the two would start laughing.
It was almost an hour before the two were finally done reminiscing.
“As amazing as this has been, I’m really tired,” Kara conceded, standing with a yawn. “Do you mind telling me how to get to the hotel?”
“You do not want to stay in that run down thing. Come stay with me on my couch at my apartment. It’s not great, but trust me, you don’t want to know half the things that have happened in any given one of those hotel rooms.”
Waverly snapped her chopsticks in half.
“I’d love to! As long as it’s not too much trouble?”
“Of course not! You’re one of my best friends, Kar.”
The two stood up to move to leave before glancing back at Waverly, who was still picking out some of the splinters in her hand. “You coming, babe?”
She forced a smile that was, hopefully, convincing onto her face. “Nah, I’m staying at the homestead tonight. Thanks, though.”
“Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow babe.”
“It was nice to meet you, Waverly! I hope I get to see you again soon!” Kara said with that gleaming smile and sparkling eyes.
“Ditto!” she called. She felt her face sour and her eyes narrow the second they were out of the room. “I hope I get to see you as you finally leave.”
The next day, Nicole barely gave her a second glance as she spent the day with Kara, showing her the sights and being about the nicest ex-girlfriend ever.
After waking up the morning after and remembering that no that was not all just some bad dream her insecure mind had created, she could take no more. So, she decided to confront her girlfriend at the police station.
Which is how she ended up firing random guns at targets and downing more of that awful bubblegum sake at the shooting range until the bottle was drained.
“You know, for someone who seems pretty intoxicated, your aim is incredible.”
Waverly whirled around to see the bemused face of her girlfriend.
“Where’s Kara? I was starting to think she was a part of you, seeing as you two were practically attached at the hip,” Waverly mumbled bitterly as she took Wynonna’s beer bottle from where she had left it before she’d passed out.
“Babe, you really shouldn’t feel threatened about Kara,” Nicole said, wrapping her arms around Waverly’s waist once she was confident she didn’t have some kind of urge to shoot her. “The thing she and I had was a long time ago. We were better off as friends anyway, so it’s not like we only broke up because of long distance.”
“She was your first love,” Waverly sighed as she slowly began to melt into Nicole’s arms.
“And Champ was yours!” Nicole laughed as Waverly shuddered. “Besides, just because she was my first love, doesn’t make her last. That belongs to you,” she murmured into Waverly’s ear.
Waverly sighed and smiled. “You’re lucky you’re so damn charming, Nicole Haught. Otherwise, I might’ve shot you.”
“Yeah, I gathered,” she replied as she gingerly removed the gun from her girlfriend’s hands and placed it aside.”Y’know, you should at least try to get to know her. You two could probably be really good friends if you gave her the chance. She’s leaving tomorrow morning but I’m pretty sure she said that she was going to come back and try to see us again if you want to start over fresh.”
Waverly nodded and leaned her head back on Nicole’s shoulder. “I’ll try.” She looked up at the brown eyes she had fallen in love with. “For you.”
Nicole grinned and planted a kiss on her nose before looking at the destruction her girlfriend had caused in her jealous rage. “That’s all I can ask for. And babe?”
“Hm?”
“I’m pretty sure that hay bale you lit on fire is about to spread to the other ones.”
“... Shit.”
True to her word, Kara was packed up and ready to leave the next morning.
“Are you sure you have to go?” Nicole asked sadly as she hugged Kara.
“Trust me, I wish I could stay. But they’ve already left me like five voicemails today alone telling me that I need to hurry up and get back,” Kara explained dejectedly. “Next time I’ll bring Alex and a few other friends. I’m sure they would love to come.”
“Of course! They’re all welcome,” Waverly interjected with a not-so-fake smile. (It wasn’t happy necessarily but she wasn’t grinning through murderus thoughts so it was a start).
“I’ll grab your bags,” Nicole offered, and before Kara could protest, she was already carrying them to the car.
Waverly turned to look at Kara. “I’m sorry we never really got to hang out while you were here. Next time?”
Kara looked shocked but her eyes lit up and sparkled as a smile crossed her face. “Sure! As long as you take care of Nicole, alright?” She turned to look where the redhead was stowing away her bags. “She’s one of the best people I know.”
Waverly nodded, and she felt that she could genuinely like this girl. “I promise.”
Kara turned before another thought crossed her mind and she faced Waverly again. “By the way, you don’t have anything to worry about with me.I have a girlfriend back in National City. Nicole is incredible, but we were always better off as friends.”
Waverly stared, dumbfounded as Nicole returned. “Alright! You’re all set, Kar.” She gave her one last hug. “Come back soon!”
Kara got in her car and waved as she drove away.
Nicole slung an arm over her shoulder and Waverly smacked her side.
“What was that for?”
“You could have told me she had a girlfriend, you little ass!”
Nicole tossed her head back and laughed, returning back to her girlfriend’s shoulder. “You’re cute when you’re jealous. Besides, what’s the fun in that?” Nicole grinned. “And my ass is top shelf, thank you very much.”
I’ve always liked the idea of jealous!Waverly, so I decided to take it up to the next level and make it a Supergirl crossover too. I was actually considering making an actual story out of this and going a slightly different direction but I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested in reading it. If people tell me they like this, or this gets a good reception, I’ll make it a full blown story on AO3. But until then, I hope you enjoy!
(P. S. Ignore any errors. I wrote pretty much straight through and I’m too lazy to double check).

It’s a little bit late, But Happy Birthday Waverly Earp!
Dear Waverly:
I am an Earper and I wanted to dedicate this letter to you for the celebration of your birthday. Although you've already received so much love from not just Haught, Wynonna, Doc, Jeremy, and Dolls, but also from all the Earpers around the world, I still feel the need of writing this letter to you. I wanted to show my appreciation to you, to let you know the importance of your existence and what it meant to me.
Firstly, I would like to thank you, the existence of your character is all the positivity I need. You are the first character I truly felt connected to, the struggle of trying to become someone special who could break the Earp curse, when you try to figure out what really matters the most to you, your effort in trying not to be seen as a child, your care about the feelings of those around you, and your attempt to protect the people you love.  It really had a huge impact on me. Currently I am the same age as you and we share the same thoughts. All the struggles and what you’ve been dealing with has inspired me in my life and I really appreciate all the things you’ve done!
Secondly, I wanted to say something about your experience in season 1 and 2, but before that hear me out. Please don’t marry Nicole yet, even though you are head over heels madly in love with that beauty. You’re only 22! (Or 23?) I’m not sure because I thought you’re already 21 in season 1. Actually… Scratch that, I’ll just leave it to our beloved show runner Emily since it’s her call. You’re still young, and a lot of girls at our age are still single. I will probably bust into panic mode if you’ve decided to get hitched at such young age. Maybe you can wait until you turn 25? Anyhow, I also wanted to let you know that the part where you were exposed to fake friends who don’t really care about your feelings even though you’ve tried so hard to fit in is really an Earp thing. I gotta say it was amazing.
To be honest, I was not a planner but I gotta say every plan you’ve made was really good except for the part where you encounter the love of your life. (Now I know what not to do when it comes to my future girlfriend) You’ve done a marvelous job in season 1 when you dug so dep into your family history, it was a powerful moment and you’ve helped out your team so much, proving yourself that you are ready to help, to fight. I am not the kind that are into my family’s story, I can’t imagine how hard it was for you to find out that you are not an Earp, but everyone never fails to tell you that you will always be the Earpest Earp ever. You’re the love of Nicole and everyone’s baby girl. You know that you can do anything as long as you figure out how much it matters to you from the bottom of your heart.
Thirdly, I wanted to let you know that Nicole and Wynonna both loves you so much and unconditionally, no matter what they will do to you, please remember that!    I am trying to be a powerful girl, too. Thanks to your inspiration! I found a lot of friends who really care about. I found that people will always get your back when you're really connected and that is an amazing feeling! I get a chat-group to discuss Everything but mostly about WE and purgatory which called "Earpers In China" and we're really connected to each other. The reason that I want to build it is that I'm so impressed by Earpers on Twitter(They connected with each other in a way I can never imagine. And they are so warm and so positive!). And I received a great gift today from a friend in Weibo who painted a drawing for you and @me on twitter! That was so surprising for me. I'm really touched by all these friendly people! I bet you know that!
I'm trying to do some help for females in China who have no idea about power from themselves and I also want to help them with chatting people on twitter so that Earpers In China can be a part of Earpers across the World!
So proud for you, Waves! Happy birthday! I bet you got all the strength from Earpers! Wish you have a wonderful day! And beautiful life!
Finally, to Dominique: SOOOOOOO proud of you that you made your wonder journey with Waverly so far! I love you more than just Waverly by the way! But thank you! Make the world a better place! Thank you for being our angel and unicorn! Waverly is not the end but the beginning! I wish you could be further! And yeah, Waverly is gorgeous and you guys should be more connected!      Thank you Emily! Thank you Little Summer McBrien(7-year-old Waverly)! Thank you Beau Smith! Thank you all the cast and producers! You are the BEST EVER!
Lastly, THANK YOU so much~@bnnxp~ You are so kind~ And I love you so much~

Nicole’s Ex
A short background fic about everyone’s favorite cop/agent and her connection with a one Jen La. AKA the story behind Nicole’s ring.
Nicole had always grown up being referred to as Haught.
Going to an all girl high school and playing on over five sports teams had a way of making your last name become your calling card.
However, it took Nicole until her early years in college to find out that people thought that she was H-O-T hot as well.
Throughout high school she had only gone on a couple of dates with a few guys, but it had just never worked out. They were either too intimidated by her athletic prowess or too uninteresting for her to spend much time on.
Then there had been Dennis in her senior year. He was the yearbook editor and somehow managed to look past the tangled hair, thick glasses, bad acne, and obnoxious braces that had plagued Nicole since her youth.
He was a really nice guy who took her on great dates and always was a true gentleman, but once he kissed her...all she could think was “eh.”
She had remained good friends with Dennis after their relationship’s eventual demise, but she knew that deep down in her heart she could never love him the way that he still secretly loved her.
During her freshman year in college, Nicole discovered the miracles that were conditioner, contacts, and acne cream as well as had her braces removed. And the difference it made in the number of people interested in her was astounding.
Haught was now Hot.
But even with all of the new attention, Nicole still felt off about the whole dating thing.
At least that was until she met Jen La.
Jen was a finance major while Nicole was studying criminology. One fateful day after Nicole had spent hours arguing with her academic adviser about how a finance course was totally useless to someone who wanted to be a cop and that the requirement was only a way to extort more money from poor college students, she found herself angrily dropping into a chair in a large lecture hall for her new course.
“Easy now. This school barely has the money to offer public computers to students, if you break that chair there won’t be enough money in the budget to get a new one. Like ever. Trust me I’ve run the numbers.” A voice says from behind Nicole.
The red head turns around to see a beautiful brunette with stunning white teeth smiling at her. Instantly she turns on a charm that surprises even herself.
“Well you would think that with the extra money that I’m paying for this stupid, useless course they could buy me all the chairs I need.” Nicole responded.
“Ouch. Don’t knock my major like that. It might not be as cool as criminology, but if you ever need help with your taxes one day then you’re gonna come crying to me.” The girl says with a cheeky grin.
Nicole smiles. She finds the girl adorable. Well maybe a bit more than adorable. But something about the statement bugged her.
“How did you know I was a criminology major?”
“Please. With that hair and that bod. I would be an idiot to try and not find out more about you. You’re Nicole Haught. Freshman. Criminology Major. 19 years young. Living in Curie Halll.” The girl responds with a sly look.
Nicole doesn’t really know how to respond. She knows that she’s blushing hard.
“Some would find that totally disturbing that you knew all that.” Nicole shoots back daringly.
“And some would find it totally endearing.” The girl almost whispered back, a sultry tone to her voice.
And God, Nicole totally did.
Within the month she and Jen were dating.
Nicole had never been so happy. Not only was kissing no longer “eh,” but instead it was addictive. Whenever one of them wasn’t in class or studying, they were studying each other.
And when they had shared their first time together about two months into their relationship, Nicole had cried. She had finally found someone that she connected with on an emotional and physical level.
They dated throughout all of college and well into Nicole’s time at the Police Academy. There was a time when they were even close to getting engaged. But that’s when things started to head south.
They were both incredibly busy with their jobs and their careers started to take importance over their relationship.
Even though things were tense, there were never fights. They were both too level headed for that, so when it finally came time for them to end the relationship. It was amiable.
Heck Nicole had even expected them to get back together once they had both settled into their jobs. But once she moved to Purgatory she knew that would never happen.
During the three months when they were no longer together and before Nicole moved the pair had tried friendship as an option.
It started out awkward and uncomfortable, but once the initial shock wore off the two were thick as thieves.
They became each other’s wing women and helped the other bring home women from bars, they had weekly shooting range competitions where they laughed until they couldn’t breathe, and of course they talked about how much it sucked that they were finally getting comfortable with each other again to only have Nicole moving away.
As Nicole was hugging her goodbye outside of her pick up truck on the morning she was leaving, Jen gave her her green jade ring that she had worn since their college days.
“Jen I can’t take this.” Nicole said putting her hands up.
“Take it nerd. Maybe it will keep you safe out there in the wild west.” Jen said with a giggle.
“You have to promise you’ll come out and see me from time to time. And swear you’ll write.” Nicole said with tears in her eyes.
“Don’t worry. I promise. Now get out of here. Find yourself a hot chick to settle down with Haught-stuff.” Jen said laughing, but crying at the same time.
“Yeah yeah you two Jen.”
“I’m telling you Jen she’s amazing. Beautiful, funny, and even better in bed than you were.” Nicole says poking fun at her best friend over the phone three months later.
“Yeah man, Waverly sounds great. I’m really happy for you! I actually have some news too.” Jen says excitedly.
“Oh do tell.”
“I’ve been dating this girl Kara for a few months now and I think she might be the one!” Jen said quietly
“Holy shit! A few months! How could you not tell me?” Nicole yells through the phone.
“I wanted to be sure, but yeah she’s great.” Jen says clearly happy.
“I’m excited for you! That’s amazing.” Nicole says with genuine joy in her voice.
“How about you and Waverly come and meet us for Christmas here in the city. Kind of a double date situation.” Jen offers.
“I couldn’t think of anything better.”

Okay so I have a Wayhaught story for you. So I was thinking about how Emily was saying Wynonna definitely has opinions about Waverly and Nicole being together so what if Wynonna takes a moment with Nicole to have "the talk" with her about how she better not hurt her or end up like Champ (but she knows she won't) and Waverly hears part of this conversation and runs aways and now is very distant with Nicole bc she thinks Wynonna scared her away but later she assures she's not going anywhere
So, I couldn’t help myself and i wrote a whole fic for this. Hope you like it!!!!
Waverly was finally back from that creepy possession ordeal that they had to deal with, and she will absolutely tell you, that she will never be touching any strange gunk that she finds on the ground or otherwise, ever again. But everything is okay now and Wynonna, Waverly, Doc, and Nicole have taken over the Black Badge office in their search to try and find and get Dolls back.
It is had been a few days and the four of them have been locked up in that office.
Waverly has been pouring over books and the internet, searching for anything she can wrestle up about secret government agencies that she can.
Wynonna was going through Dolls’s computer while she drinks whiskey out of his X cup, and muttering curse words under her breath since frankly there isn’t anything useful or entertaining of the hard drive.
Doc was sitting alone, at the far corner of the table. At first, he had spent a lot of time examining the vials that he had injected into Dolls before the showdown are Shorty’s. Now, though, he has moved on playing Solitare with an impossibly old set of cards.
Nicole, she has been sniffing out every gun and other weapons she can find in the office, she has been cataloging them and cleaning them, even going so far as to dismembering and, all the guns. At one point she even managed to wrestle PeaceMaker away from Wynonna. It was a very difficult feat and she found out that it hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time, probably since Wyatt himself had it.
Now it has been a couple of weeks, and with all the stress, Wynonna had pretty much forgotten about Nic and Waves dating, and reverting back to her normal self, had become totally oblivious of the lingering eye contact between her sister and the officer, not so subtle touching that they exchanged whenever close enough, and that whenever one of them left the room the other followed. She was so wrapped up in herself she had pretty much forgotten about the two dating.
At the end of the fourth night, after all of them had done almost as much as they could. Wynonna hadn’t found anything on the computer. Waverly hadn’t found anything mention a Black Badge Division. Nicole had run out of weapons to clean. And Doc, well how many games of solitaire can someone really play before they go insane? They all had started to sigh heavily and push their work away.
Grabbing Nicole’s hand, and looking across to Wynonna who’s face was buried in her palms, Waverly clears her throat, “You know Gus left me a message early and said that she was going to open Shorty’s back up tonight, invited us to stop by.”
“Got Dolls and I’s mess all cleaned up then?” Doc asks when he perks up at the idea of going to the saloon for a drink.
“Yup, I guess some town’s folk pitched in,” Waverly starts, “Gus said they wanted to try and make it up to Wynonna, the whole trying to kill her thing.”
“Strange,” Wynonna finally adds, “They’ve never felt bad about my near death before, I guess people are growing around here.”
“Oh come on Earp,” Nicole can’t help but attempt to protest that, “not everyone in this town hates you.”
Wynonna scoffs at that, “You clearly did not grow up around here red. But that is a conversation for another night when my brain doesn’t feel like soup. I think we ought to head down there, support Gus.”
It didn’t take them long to pack their things up and head to Shorty’s. Wynonna had already slipped behind the bar and found a bottle of whiskey and four glasses. Doc had stepped out to get some air for a few minutes. Waverly and Nicole had claimed a booth and were cuddled up pushed into the corner of the booth and were enjoying a slightly discreet and satisfying make out session.
“What the hell is this, guys?” Wynonna almost demands as she sets the bottle and glass down on the table.
“Uh, it’s me kissing my girlfriend Wy,” Waverly answers, with a very confused tone.
“Oh shit.” Wynonna declares as it dawns on her. “I, uh, I forgot about that.”
“No shit Earp,” Nicole adds after she lets out a giggle.
“I guess you and I need to have a little talk then Haught,” Wynonna replies as she starts the red-head down.
“I think that may be my cue to go find Doc,” Waverly says as she gives Nicole an apologetic smile for throwing her to the wolves or rather wolf that is Wynonna Earp, and then heads away.
“What exactly do you think you’re doing with my little sister?“ Wynonna asks, jumping right in.
“Honestly? Loving her.” Is all Nicole offers her in response.
“She’s been loved before Haught. What’s supposed to make you think you’re any different?” Wynonna questions the red head further.
“The way that I look at her.” Nicole challenges.
“And what way might that be?”
“Like she, herself, hung the moon and the stars, just for me.” Is all Nicole gives in return. Honestly, if you Wynonna hasn’t figured it out by now, she figuring she’ll have to draw it out for the woman.
“Champ used to look at her like that until she stopped being a trophy for him to win and became the strong young woman that she is. How am I supposed to know that you’re different than him?” Wynonna challenges Nicole. She knows that Nicole is different, but she needs to get a promise right from the woman.
“Because I’m not a boy-man-child like he was or is or whatever. Come on Wynonna, you’ve known me for a while now, do you really think I have it in me to treat anyone like crap, let alone Waves?” Nicole asks the question almost beginning to feel hurt.
“Well, I guess you’ve got a point there. I just have to make sure to give you the shovel talk or whatever. You know, Waverly is the most important person in my life and I haven’t really been there for her until recently, and I think I’m still a little too caught up in the curse bullshit to truly give her the attention she deserves.” Wynonna offers the confession as a peace offering of sorts.
“I get that Wy. But you are here now, and you’re not going anywhere. Plus, she has me now too, so I think she’ll be just fine.”
As Nicole finishes her statement, Waverly is walking back up to the table and notices the two other women completely emerged in the conversation but doesn’t catch anything, until Wynonna’s final statement.
“I get that. But just to put it out there, if you so much as crack her heart, or treat her even a little poorly, I swear to you, I’ll be using PeaceMaker for more that putting down revenants.” It’s an empty threat as she knows Nicole is better than that. As she finished though she notices Waverly within earshot and is completely unaware that she has been standing there long enough to hear the threat.
“Hey, Baby Girl!” Wynonna greats Waverly with a broad smile. “Did you find Doc?”
“I ummm, I’m not feeling well, can you take me home Wynonna?” Waverly asks, not even responding to the question, she’s so shaken up from hearing the threat, scared of what it means. Does Wynonna no like Nicole as much as she’d been letting on the past few weeks?
“I can take Babe.” Nicole offers before Wynonna gets a chance to respond.
“No, I want Wynonna to take me.” Is all Waverly offers, and honestly the way she says it is a little cold. Before either Nicole or Wynonna has a chance to interject again, Waverly has headed out of the building. Thinking, dammit Wynonna, I finally found a good one, and you’re going and scaring her away, you can’t threaten lesbians with guns, it freaks them out. Admittedly, Waverly may have recently delved into gay culture and learned a lot about lesbian tropes.
“You’re not driving her anywhere Earp.” Is how Nicole decides is best to start the conversation.
“Why the hell not Haught? If Waves wants to go, I’ll take her where ever she wants.” Wynonna defends herself.
“No, you won’t. You’ve been drinking Whiskey all day, and you’ve drunk half that bottle by yourself while we’ve been sitting here. It’s not safe for you to get behind the wheel.” Nicole offers as she stands up and slips on her jacket.
“Fine. You going to go get her then?” Wynonna reluctantly asks.
“Yeah. Y’all can come sleep at my place when you get done here if you want.” Nicole presents the peace offering.
“Thanks, but there’s a room upstairs here, we’ll just take it. Let’s meet in the office at noon tomorrow? Give everyone a chance to get some extra rest.” Wynonna offers in return, her own peace offering of sorts.
“Sure, see ya then.” And with that Nicole has turned to head out the saloon herself.
Nicole runs through the bodies as quickly as she can, pushing through the front doors, and scanning her surroundings. She finds Waverly sitting in her Jeep, letting it run. As Nicole gets closer to the Jeep, she notices hard sporadic shaking of Waverly’s shoulders, a clear sign of the tears that a certainly falling down the girl’s face. Wasting no more time, she runs to the driver’s door where Waverly is sat and pulls it open. Before she has a chance to protest or even notices who’s arms are enveloping, Nicole makes quick work gather Waverly up, rubbing her hands up and down the younger woman’s back.
“What’s wrong baby?” Nicole whispers in her ear.
With the question, Waverly starts to push Nicole away but doesn’t have enough strength to get her too far away.
“I asked for Wynonna,” Waverly states through heavy breaths.
“I know, but I don’t feel comfortable with Wynonna taking you anywhere. She’s had too much to drink.” Nicole offers, loosening her grip while looking down to search Waverly’s eyes to try and figure out what is going on. “I was thinking we could go to my place and I would take care of you.”
“I don’t expect you to take care of me Nic. You don’t even want to be around me, I’m sure.” Waverly states, not being able to help herself and leaning into Nicole.
“What the heck are you talking about Waverly?” Nicole asks shocked.
“I heard what Wynonna said. She threatened to kill you.” Waverly makes the statement though another round of tears.
“Oh baby,” Nicoles starts, with a grin playing at her lips. “She didn’t mean that.”
“Yes she did, she doesn’t joke about using PeaceMaker,” Waverly mumbles into the collar of Nicole’s shirt, that is quickly absorbing tears and most likely a gross combination of slobber and snot, not that Nicole minds. Waverly can bawl into any of her shirts any time she needs to.
“No babe, I promise she didn’t mean it. She knows I would never hurt you. She knows that I love you too much. She knows that I will treat you better than anyone else has ever treated you. She just said that because she felt like she had to finish her shovel talk.” Nicole whispers it to Waverly as she combs a hand through her hair.
“Are you sure?” Waverly asks, starting to regain her composure.
“Yes, I promise. Now let’s go home and go to sleep. I think you may be a little over exhausted from the past couple weeks.” Nicole says as she lifts Waverly up, letting the smaller woman cling to her like a Khola bear, and walks to the other side of the Jeep. “We can sleep in and go get breakfast, Wynonna doesn’t want us coming in until noon.”
As she lets Nicole settle her into the passenger’s seat of her own car, she watches Nicole intently. Nicole just pays attention to what she’s doing. She buckles Waverly in and leans across her to turn the heat up a bit. As she is pulling herself out of the car, though, Waverly grabs the lapels of her jacket and pulls her so the forehead to forehead.
“You promise you want to be with me?” Waverly asks gently, her breath tickling Nicole’s lips.
“I promise Waverly. Ther is nowhere else, I would rather be.” Nicole makes what is probably the truthful statement of her life, and she is rewarded. She is rewarded by Waverly who leans in, gently pushing her lips to Nicoles, it’s the kiss of a promise, a kiss that means I love you, a kiss that says thank you for loving me. It gently but still passionate. Their lips move together like a choreographed dance. It is as though they were made for kissing each other, and honestly, they probably are.
“Good, because I feel the exact same way.” Waverly states as she pulls away but stays close enough to punctuate each word with another kiss.

Wynonna thinks Nicole needs a little bit of socialization, but will a party bring more strife than joy?
Tumblr media
Thanks again to @jaybear1701. Always a rockstar. This chapter gets a bit... much. Sorry. But also not sorry. I like breaking things. I'm horrible. TW: Mention of Suicide; Anxiety; Heavy alcohol use; Abortion
**Companion song: Across the Universe (Fiona Apple Cover)**
"Are you going to tell him?"
Wynonna stared out the window, watching as the world skimmed by. She hated this town and the town hated her. "No." Unfortunately, it would always be home because it's where Waverly was.
There was a soft sigh as the SUV continued out of town, heading towards Gus's property.
Wynonna reached up to trace a path of water dripping down a window, trying not to think about the cramping, or… "It's better he not know. You know Henry. He'll probably cry or some bullshit like that." She didn't want to think about it. She needed to just lock it away.
"And you don't think you should have…"
"No." Wynonna looked at Xavier who was behind the wheel. "Telling him would destroy him. It would literally kill him." She'd known as unfair as it was to Xavier, he would help her. He was always the most dependable of her tiny circle. She might even consider him a friend at that point, even if it was just because he was in love with her.
"It's your choice," Xavier finally said, returning his eyes to the road.
"My choice," Wynonna repeated. As they coursed down the road, Wynonna was relieved to finally see the shape of the house they'd lived in since… that night. Choice was such a bullshit word. There was no choice really. Two forms of birth control and fate still felt like fucking with her.
As the SUV came to a stop, Wynonna put on the smile she'd been practicing, turning to Xavier. "Thanks X, you're a lifesaver." She opened the door and hopped out, turning back to him again. "You should come over Friday night. I'm gonna have a party."
"Do you really think you should?"
Wynonna rolled her eyes. "I'm fine. I just need to drink… a lot."
Xavier nodded. "What time?"
With a snort, Wynonna pulled her phone out of her pocket, swiping away a text from Henry. She was definitely not ready to see him. "I'll text you. It'll probably be 7ish but I need to convince Waves first."
Xavier nodded again. "Ok. Get some rest. Take your antibiotics."
"Thanks, Mom," Wynonna called out before shutting the door. She made sure she had her bag on her as she made her way up the front stairs. Gus was thankfully gone, probably getting supplies to prepare for her upcoming trip.
Waverly's Jeep was parked out front but when Wynonna entered the house, she only saw Nicole, sitting at the dining room table which surprised her. Over the last few weeks, it was rare that Nicole and Waverly were separate, which she found strange. Waverly had never been one to stay home all the time. At first, Wynonna had attributed it to the breakup with Champ and their overlapping circles. It wasn't until that one afternoon she smelt weed coming from downstairs that the sight she was greeted with made her think otherwise.
"Is this really your hair color?"
Wynonna stopped mid-stair at the scene she saw before her. She'd only swung by home to switch shoes when a familiar smell had brought her to the basement door. It was still early afternoon and she did not expect to see her sister sitting on the couch with Nicole's head resting on her thigh as she ran her fingers through auburn hair.
"Unfortunately," Nicole answered slowly, her toes tapping to the soft music that poured from the speakers connected to the record player.
"What in gay shit is going on here?" Wynonna asked as she walked over to the couch.
"Hey Earp," Nicole spoke in a slurred speech, on the verge of passing out.
"Shouldn't you two be in school?"
Waverly chuckled. "She had a panic attack earlier. so I drove her home."
"Man panic attacks are the worst." Wynonna picked the box up, looking at the diminished supplies. "Good choice of strains." A thought occurred to her as she looked at her sister who was way too high and seemed to be studying Nicole's face. It took her a minute to register what Waverly had said. "You drove her home? What about your perfect attendance?"
Waverly shrugged. "It's fine. I mean… I'm sure my college app is padded enough."
Wynonna blinked in disbelief at Waverly's nonchalance. From what Gus had told her, Waverly had kept her attendance spotless and now she was willing to give it up that easily? Just another thing she filed away for later.
"You know what you need, Haught?"
Nicole sighed softly, looking up from her text book. Wynonna had an excited look on her face and one of the things she'd learned over the past few weeks was that when Wynonna was excited about something, it was probably going to be chaos. "What's that, Earp?"
Wynonna slung her arm over Nicole's shoulder, leaning closer and whispering, "A house party."
Nicole sighed again. That was the last thing she wanted. In the past few weeks, school had been… strained to say the least, after her panic attack. While she'd managed to ignore most of the negativity, a party would be inviting that negativity into her after-school life. But parties weren't always bad. She didn't want to be around a lot of people, but she could really use a drink. "Aren't you a little old for house parties?"
"Haha." Wynonna removed her arm before slugging Nicole on the shoulder. "Funny. You're a real riot. Well let me tell you something about Purgatory, Cali-girl. In Purgatory, you're never too old for a house party."
Nicole winced as she rubbed her shoulder. "Sounds…" She wasn't even sure how it sounded.
"You don't have to say it, I can see the excitement in your eyes." Wynonna slapped the top of the table. "Gus is out of town this weekend with her annual tomatuh festival," she mocked Gus's accent. "So we've been tasked with, you know, protecting the house, protecting Waverly's chastity, making sure you don't off yourself…"
"I'm pretty sure Waverly is old enough to watch herself." Nicole refused to be baited.
"You're killin me, Smalls." Wynonna looked up as Waverly entered with her own stack of books. "Help me out here, Waves."
Waverly rose an eyebrow. "Experience tells me I should take Nicole's side on this." She sat down at the table beside Nicole, beginning to spread out her books in preparation for their study session, a habit they'd formed the second week of school together. After all, it made sense. They had almost all the same classes.
"So you don't want a party this weekend?"
Now, Waverly pursed her lips, looking from Nicole to Wynonna.
"See!" Wynonna laughed as she moved over and threw her arm around Waverly's shoulders. "Waverly has the true spirit of an Earp."
"I mean…" Waverly toyed with a pencil between her fingers. "I do feel like since I broke up with Champ, I've been a little isolated."
"Excellent. Hop onboard the hype train, Haught."
Nicole sighed, looking at Waverly who was watching her with an amused look. "I guess."
"Fuck yes." Wynonna yelled as she left the room, heading upstairs without another word.
Waverly seemed to be watching her closely. "Are you sure you're going to be ok?"
Nicole gave her a tight-lipped smile. "Well… I guess we'll see. I really need a drink and the people… well I can just hide in my room if it gets too much." When Waverly began going through her homework, Nicole felt a ball of anxiety beginning to form in her belly.
Nicole looked around the crowded house, trying not to let anxiety get to her. It hadn't worsened, but it hadn't gotten any better.
"What are you doing?" Waverly suddenly popped up, drink in hand.
"Just… observing." Nicole took a sip from the cup in her own hand. It wasn't too bad for a high school party.
"You're brooding."
Nicole rose an eyebrow. "I don't brood." Somehow, Waverly's sunny presence was comforting and Nicole felt herself beginning to relax. "I'm just a fan of watching."
Waverly laughed at that. "Ok. If you want to watch, you can at least be comfortable." She reached down and grabbed Nicole's free hand, beginning to pull her through the crowd.
Looking down at their joint hands, Nicole allowed herself to be pulled forward. She could have easily stood her ground, could have resisted, but she couldn't find a reason to. She was surprised as she was pushed down onto the couch and Waverly sat down beside her.
Nicole noticed that Waverly was like a beacon - a strong light drawing in her friends that appeared one by one, plopping down on the chairs, or on the floor until it seemed like they were surrounded by what felt like half the party.
"All right bitches!" Wynonna kicked a chair over to the coffee table, her hands filled with glasses and a new bottle. "Time to have some fun."
"Oh no." Waverly gave Nicole a look.
Nicole didn't move from her position, instead she took a sip of beer. "What's on your mind, Elder Earp?" She could already feel a light buzz going and she was comfortable.
"I say we play a game." Wynonna plopped down into a chair and began setting out shot glasses. "Nerd, get in here." Wynonna pointed at Jeremy as he was about to run away. "Henry, Bitchy Blonde," Wynonna slid a shot glass over to Stephanie. "Haught pants, Baby Girl." Glasses found homes to as many people could fit around the coffee table.
"Not playing, X?" Waverly called over to Xavier who was lingering always in the background, sipping from a bottle of water.
"Designated driver." Was all he said with a shrug.
Nicole sighed as she turned to face the coffee table. "Okay… what are we playing." So much for staying under the radar.
"Never have I ever," Wynonna declared, getting a round of groans. "Oh believe me, it's a lot safer than truth or dare. Ask Henry." She gave him a wink.
Everyone wanted to ask, but it was Jeremy who broke the silent taboo, "What happened to Henry?"
Wynonna laughed, but didn't answer.
As if he knew just explaining wouldn't do it justice, Henry tugged his shirt up, revealing a silver barbell that went through his right nipple.
"Nope." Waverly shook her head. "Just nope."
Chrissy was about to reach out to touch it until Waverly captured her wrist with a shake of her head and Henry lowered his shirt.
Nicole had to laugh at that. "Not a fan of nipple piercings?"
Waverly shook her head. "Nope. Just nope." She crossed her arms over her chest before freezing, turning to look at Nicole. "Why? Is it something you've…"
Nicole cleared her throat, having learned that Waverly's curiosity was immeasurable and would often take over and drive her crazy. Instead of answering, she turned to Wynonna. "So, Never Have I Ever…"
"Everyone knows the rules, but let's go over them for the nerds." Wynonna poured herself a shot just to have one. "We go around the table. One person says something they've never done, and if anyone else has done it, they take a shot. I'll start." With a smirk, she spoke, "Never have I ever gotten straight A's in a quarter."
"Asshole." Waverly laughed, setting her shot glass on the table. She was joined by Jeremy and Nicole almost laughed at the look Waverly gave her when she set her own glass down.
"What? I used to be a brainiac…" Nicole lifted her glass, mentally preparing herself for the shot. "Until I discovered alcohol and sex," she said before drinking the shot. She tried not to laugh as Waverly began coughing up her shot, her face turning bright red. Nicole reached out and gently pat her on the back.
"Well, this is going to be fun." Wynonna rubbed her hands together as she handed the bottle to Jeremy.
"Oh." He looked around in surprise before his face screwed up seriously. He looked like he was trying to conjure an entire army of dark spirits or something nerdy like that before Wynonna gently kicked him. "Okay okay. Never have I ever…" Jeremy paused, his cheeks coloring a bright red, "kissed a boy."
There was a groan as most of the glasses hit the table. Nicole knew her own glass would have probably been the most surprising if it weren't for Henry's glass sliding towards Jeremy. Jeremy's eyes grew twice as big as he stumbled with the bottle of liquor, beginning to fill the shot glasses.
"Something you wanna tell us, Hank?" Wynonna commented with a smirk.
Henry retrieved his filled shot glass with a shrug. "A gentleman doesn't kiss and tell," he commented before swallowing the shot.
They continued around the group once, each turn getting equal amounts of groans and laughter. They'd each had a sufficient amount of alcohol in their system as they began the second round.
It was her turn again as Waverly hummed softly to herself. She tapped her lips, obviously trying to think of something good that hadn't already been said.
"Never have I ever seen such a bigger waste of time," Wynonna commented, nudging Waverly with the tip of her boot.
"Okay okay." Waverly's eyes came up to meet Nicole's before quickly moving away. "Never have I ever kissed a girl in a more-than-friends way."
"Well fuck me." Wynonna sighed heavily as she set her shot glass on the table.
Nicole set her own down, a small spike of curiosity flowing through her as Waverly's eyes kept darting to her and quickly away.
Henry put his glass down and looked at Jeremy.
"Thankfully not me." Jeremy shook his head. Although he'd only had one shot, being so obviously the most innocent of the group, he was still a little more than buzzed. He didn't drink often.
Chrissy set her shot glass down and everyone looked at her. "What? Shit happens when you drink too much." She chuckled.
"Why Chrissy Nedley... as I live and breathe." Waverly laughed as she dished out the shots.
Nicole couldn't help laughing as she retrieved her glass. She was feeling significantly more relaxed and was starting to enjoy the night.
That is, until it came to Stephanie's turn for a second time.
The night had been going a little too smoothly until Stephanie, who'd obviously drank too much, lifted the bottle and pretended to think. Her smirk was thick with malice as she looked across the table directly at Nicole. "Never have I ever wanted to kill myself"
It was as if time slowed down, everyone at the table frozen in a moment of disbelief.
Surprisingly, Wynonna leaned forward to speak. "What the…" Her voice trailed off as Nicole set her shot glass on the table, one eyebrow twitching up in challenge.
Stephanie seemed to find glee in it as she began to fill up the shot glass.
Another clink made the group jump as a second glass hit the table, sliding towards Nicole's.
Nicole barely heard the gasps that went around the room as she followed the path the glass came from, her eyes locking with Waverly's. She froze, not sure if she should say something, or if Waverly even wanted her to say anything. She'd known for a while there was a sadness behind those eyes, but they'd never talked about it.
After a second, Waverly broke the eye contact and looked at Stephanie who seemed frozen in place. "Well, what are you waiting for? Fill it up."
There was another clink, and Wynonna pushed her glass towards the middle, looking at no one but Stephanie with venom in her gaze.
Suddenly there was a fourth glass, then a fifth, then a sixth and Nicole felt her eyes burning with unshed tears. She looked around to see familiar somber faces, each person willing to bring their demons to the surface at that moment.
To her credit, Stephanie didn't dare say anything as she filled the collection of glasses on the table.
Everyone retrieved theirs before Nicole but didn't drink, as if waiting for her to take the lead, each of their glasses filled with the guilt that was too hard to swallow. Nicole lifted her own glass and stared at Stephanie before quickly knocking the shot back.
Without saying anything else, Nicole set the glass down, stood up, and walked away from the table.
"What the fuck, Stephanie?" Waverly turned to her friend. She couldn't believe the girl would be so cruel.
"What?" Stephanie asked in defense. "It's just a game, Waves."
"If you seriously don't see what you did wrong, you need to get the fuck out of my house." Waverly pushed up from her seat, ignoring the shocked silence around her and walking off in the direction Nicole had disappeared. She went from room to room on the ground floor, regretting inviting as many people as had shown up. She'd thought she'd seen Nicole go into the kitchen but when she got there it was empty.
Turning to leave, she didn't expect to run straight into Wynonna.
Wynonna's eyes scanned the room quickly before settling on Waverly.
"Wynonna, I'm trying to find…" Waverly was cut off as Wynonna pulled her into a hug. She froze.
It seemed like forever until Wynonna pushed back, looking in her eyes. "You're the most important person in the world to me. I just wanted to make sure you know that."
After a long moment, Waverly nodded. "I know, Wynonna."
Shifting uncomfortably, Wynonna quickly kissed Waverly on the forehead and pushed her away. "I need a damn beer."
Watching her walk away, Waverly smiled before returning to her search. Not finding her anywhere downstairs, Waverly wound her way between the people to get upstairs. She was about to head towards Nicole's room when she felt a draft coming from under the closed door. Furrowing her brow, she opened the door to find the room empty. On the wall opposite the door, the window was wide open, letting in a gust from outside. "What the…" Rubbing her arms, she moved across the room. "Nicole?"
Nicole sighed softly as she tucked the bottle of vodka into her pocket, lifting the window open. A gust of cold air poured in and Nicole was glad she was wearing thermals under her clothes and coat. Ever so carefully, she stepped out onto the roof, making sure her boots wouldn't slip on the shingles.
The music from down below seemed to shake the house slightly, but with no neighbors for miles, it didn't matter much. Apparently the Earp girls knew a LOT of people, Nicole mused as she took a seat on the roof and pulled out the bottle of vodka, trying not to think too much about the game before.
Maybe she'd gotten used to the cold a little, but she swore it didn't bother her quite as much anymore. Taking a swig from her bottle, she looked up at the stars. She'd spent many nights under the stars back home and it was so strange for the stars to not be where they were supposed to be. Not only that, but there were so many more stars. Back home, the light pollution made it difficult to see more than the larger stars, even in the desert.
But here, on the roof of Gus's house, she could easily see an endless amount of shining pinpoints of light . She could almost see the ribbons of colors wrapped around and defining galaxies, or maybe she was imagining it. Was Shae somewhere up there, between the earth and infinity?
Her parents hadn't raised her to be religious, so she wasn't sure about the afterlife - if there was an afterlife at all. She couldn't imagine heaven or hell, but she knew her dreams were haunted by Shae's presence. She had to wonder if it was helping or making things worse. Either way, she couldn't imagine her life without Shae, even if it meant just in her dreams.
Swallowing another mouthful of vodka, she looked down at one arm, her hand pulling back the sleeves slowly, revealing marred flesh inch by inch. She could still feel it, the pull that came from within, tempting her with promises of peace. It was a strange feeling, knowing that a handful of pills a few times a day was the only thing helping her resist the voice. But now, it was like the idiotic game played by children was almost enough to break the dam of control she'd maintained.
Nicole's mind took her back to that night, when the grief had taken over. She remembered watching her lifeforce escaping her body. She'd never thought that much blood would look like that, the way the color had flecks of texture, not unlike the way metallic paint shined in the light. It was almost as if she could see the red and white blood cells spreading across the desk, watering down as it began to mix with the bottle of vodka she'd dropped when she lost strength in her hands.
"Nicole?"
Pulling her sleeves back into place, Nicole wiped away the tears she hadn't realized had streaked down her cheeks before looking towards the window.
Waverly's head popped out the window, looking around before curious eyes settled on Nicole. "Oh, you're out here…" She let her voice trail off, whether from not knowing what to say or the cold, Nicole couldn't be sure but she saw the girl wrinkle her nose, beginning to rub at her arms to fight the chill.
Nicole nodded. "Yeah, I just needed to get away from the crowd for a few," she said, as if Waverly hadn't been there, witnessing everything that had happened..
"Oh, okay." Waverly paused for a second before disappearing back into the room.
Waverly was so strange sometimes, Nicole thought as she took a drink. And yet, she wondered if she'd been a bit rude, going over her response. It wasn't rude to want peace was it? Did Waverly think Nicole was trying to get away from her to avoid talking about what had happened? That wasn't it at all.
Nicole sighed. It was just another thing she would probably have to apologize for later. Whenever she saw Waverly again. Which came a lot sooner than she thought as she heard a noise at the window and saw Waverly squirming out, this time dressed in more suitable clothes, a blanket in one hand, and a thermos in the other.
"Here, take this." Waverly didn't give Nicole a chance to protest before she handed her the thermos, shaking out the blanket and taking a seat next to Nicole.
Nicole rose an eyebrow as she handed the thermos back. "Hello."
"Hi," Waverly responded simply, uncapping the thermos and pouring the steaming liquid into the cover before handing it to Nicole, who took it more out of polite habit.
"What's this?" Setting her bottle of vodka aside, Nicole couldn't help but be drawn in by the heat being emitted from the drink.
"Hot chocolate." Waverly answered with a big smile before leaning closer.
"You…" Nicole brought the cup up to smell it, surprised by the chocolate scent. "You made hot chocolate?"
Waverly nodded with a proud smile. "Don't be so surprised. It's vegan… including vegan Bailey's and whipped cream flavored vodka."
Nicole eyed it suspiciously.
"It's not poisonous, Asshole." Waverly nudged Nicole's shoulder before taking a drink straight from the thermos.
With a soft chuckle, Nicole took a small sip. She paused for a moment to let her brain try to catch up with her taste buds. After a few seconds, she took a larger sip.
"Mmm hmm. That's what I thought." Waverly took another sip from the thermos before looking up at the stars.
It wasn't traditional hot chocolate, slightly sharper and actually silker, but Nicole enjoyed it nonetheless. "Thank you." Looking up at the stars, Nicole felt a strange shift in the environment, or maybe it was a shift in herself. She had been thirsting for the silence, away from the crowd of teen obscenity that was happening on the bottom floor of the house.
Away from Stephanie.
And yet she didn't mind Waverly's presence. She didn't take up too much space like people often did when invading your privacy.
Waverly sniffled, rubbing a bit of steam away from her face. "I um... I wanted to…"
"Don't apologize for her," Nicole quickly spoke up. She gave Waverly a tight-lipped smile. "There's enough in life we all have to apologize for. You don't need to take the weight of other people's bullshit."
Waverly paused, a pensive look on her face. "I'm not gonna apologize for her," she said softly, looking down into her thermos as she thought about her response. "Stephanie is a bitch and she shouldn't have said that."
"Oh."
Waverly sighed. "But I do want to say I am extremely sorry… from a completely not in my house kind of way… even though it's not really my house, it's Gus's."
Nicole had to smile at that. "So… is that why you came out here? To apologize for something you didn't do just because it happened in a house that's not yours?"
Canting her head to the side, Waverly shrugged. "I wanted to make sure you were okay, which you seem to be. What are you doing out here?"
Finishing the last of her hot chocolate, Nicole set the cup to the side. She leaned back until she was laying on the slant of the roof, feeling the chill of the surface even through her coat. "It's quiet and the view is nice." She pointed up at the sky. "I've never seen this many stars before."
Waverly looked up at the sky and it was quiet for a moment, with the exception of the ever present sound of bass coming from downstairs. "I suppose it would be different for a city girl like you."
Nicole rose an eyebrow as she looked at Waverly, seeing the smile in her side profile. "That's mighty small town of you to say."
"It's not even the best view," Waverly commented as she closed up her thermos, grabbing the cup Nicole had emptied and fastening it to the top. "You should see it from my old house." She sighed softly, seeming to be lost in her own thoughts for a minute. "It's further from town so there's not as much light pollution...Especially in the fall and winter when the skies light up." Her voice was soft and Nicole found herself sitting up to hear better.
"Really?" Nicole could see the emotions in Waverly's face even from the side, a bit of sadness and loss seeming to surface, but when hazel eyes turned her way, it took everything in her not to gasp. With the angle she was sitting at, she could see the glimmer of emotion and an expression she couldn't quite identify - it was like Nicole could see the stars reflected in her eyes.
"Chocolate finally hitting you?" Waverly asked, a smirk spreading across her face and washing away any bit of melancholy that might have been peeking through.
It must have been the alcohol, Nicole told herself as she found herself inspecting the features of Waverly's face. "Yeah." Nicole looked away, her mind spinning. "Must be the chocolate… and all the alcohol."
A comfortable silence fell between them for a minute until Waverly spoke once more.
"You don't really have pierced nipples do you?"
Nicole just laughed.
