Okay so I have had multiple fandom debates over whether Troy Tempest or Steve Zodiac is the worst Supermarionation protagonist, and I think it's Steve, but everyone always votes for Troy. And while I get why I still want to argue my case.
So I fully admit that Troy is a jerk throughout Stingray. He's egotistical and big headed and he's kinda sexist, but I feel that the show consistently makes fun of him for these traits and he gets called out for it occasionally. It's in stuff like 'Standby for action' or 'Man from the Navy' where after spending a whole series trying to date two women at the same time, he then gets all mad and huffy when they also proceed to show interest in other men, and I feel like the show is making fun of him for acting like that.
With Steve though, his first line to Venus is essentially him asking her to get back in the kitchen and make him a sandwich. He also commits genocide on quite a few alien species (thinking of 'Space Magnet' specifically where he just guns down a bunch of aliens who really could have just been talked down from stealing the moon) but the series never frames these actions in a negative light in the same way it does with Troy's. I feel like Troy probably does have more asshole moments overall but Steve's moments never get called out at any point in Fireball.
I felt compelled to type this after rewatching 'Raptures of the Deep' which I feel confirms my feelings even though that's the most assholey we see Troy. Like, yes, the whole episode is an elaborate dream episode where he imagines himself living like a Roman Emperor with the women all waiting for him hand and foot, but the episode shows that he's kind of terrible and it feels like we are meant to be laughing at him throughout this fantasy. He is not shown in a good light and there's a bit at the end where he wakes up and realises he doesn't want to actually be that. He straight up says "I was real mean down there, give me Stingray anytime". Like, he acknowledges his assholery and I like that more than Steve never doing it once.

Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, often shortened to Captain Scarlet, is a British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and filmed by their production company Century 21 Productions for distributor ITC Entertainment. It is one of several Anderson series that were filmed using a form of electronic marionette puppetry dubbed "Supermarionation" combined with scale model special effects sequences. Running to thirty-two 25-minute episodes, it was first broadcast on ITV regional franchises between 1967 and 1968 and has since been transmitted in more than 40 other countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Set in 2068, Captain Scarlet follows the "war of nerves" between Earth and the Mysterons, a race of Martians who possess partial control over matter. When a misunderstanding, causes human astronauts to attack their city on Mars, the Mysterons vow revenge and launch reprisals against Earth. These are countered by Spectrum, a worldwide security organisation. In the first episode, Spectrum agent Captain Scarlet acquires the Mysterons' self-healing power of "retrometabolism" and is thus rendered "indestructible", being able to recover from otherwise fatal injuries. In this way, Scarlet becomes Spectrum's top asset in its fight against the Mysterons.

UFO and Star Trek were the first science fiction I remember watching as a kid. I recently rewatched it, and was surprised how well done it was, with a complex ands well developed story.

Captain Black (Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons)
Captain Black is the fictional nemesis of Captain Scarlet and the primary recurring Mysteron intermediary in the 1960s British Supermarionation television series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and its 2005 computer-animated remake, New Captain Scarlet.
"Black" is a codename; in the original series, the character's real name is never revealed (although in tie-ins he is named as Conrad Turner), while in the remake the character's tombstone indicates that his real name is Conrad Lefkon. The character's transformation from human to Mysteron agent occurs on Mars in the first episode of each series ("The Mysterons" and "Instrument of Destruction, Part 1")

To this day 'Nearly Virgil, nearly' is a thing my family just quote at each other. You did such a good job capturing this scene.
A homage to my fave scene from the episode “End of the Road”.
… Poor Alan.
