Not me learning about prion diseases again this week and being stuck on ducky and i's zombie apocalypse au where Victor Creed, certified unhygienic bastard, eats a deer with a finally zoonotic prion of chronic wasting disease and then passes it on to a human during sex either cause he just didn't wash his hands or brush his teeth, or worse yet, because watersports (cause prion is a protein and proteins are shed in urine)
Vet school is simultaneously a gift and a terrible, terrible curse
(This is like the 3rd or 4th time we've had a prion diseases lecture in 4 semesters and each time I add something new to this idea and I hate myself for it)

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.
Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).
Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:
Tumblr media
Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?
#You're right it's not very satisfying for humanity that the invaders are foiled by a bacteria and not human action! Maybe that's the point!#Maybe it's supposed to be FRIGHTENING and make you ask questions about what humans will do under extreme stress#Not be a morally uplifting tale about Humanity Heroically Defeating the Martians in a Glorious Hollywood Ending#Maybe it's MEANT to be unsatisfying because this is not a straightforward fairytale#I mean I've only read it once and don't know much about Wells' work so I might have misunderstood the point of the book too#But at places it is a very pessimistic view of the human condition and that's partly WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL#That doesn't mean there aren't moments of individual acts of heroism (the Thunderchild for example)#But the question is not just 'how will humanity beat the Martians and prove that we're still the masters of the universe'#Rather 'a) why is humanity so confident that it's ultimately in control of its own destiny#And b) here's lots of scenes of societal collapse and of people pushed to the brink and what would YOU do in those circumstances?#Would YOU feel remorse about silencing the curate even if it did lead to his death?#What if it rather than a foolish adult it had been a small child?#And even if they were weak did they DESERVE it? Yes it might have been necessary but should it be policy going forward?#Would you also be attracted briefly by the certainties that the artilleryman's (rather fascist) plan seems to offer so humanity survives?#But what sort of humanity would that be if it DID survive and is it worth it? The narrator feels he needs to justify the curate's death#The artilleryman would have probably never have thought it was anything OTHER than justifiable or indeed laudable#Under strain and stress would you start to turn against even your loved ones and become brutal?#Is that the only hope for human survival beyond complete surrender? And was the destruction of London maybe even 'cleansing'#In the eugenics sense or in the sense of a natural horror of dirt and germs?#And the vast exodus of six million people fleeing headlong in panic - we might not have seen that exact phenomenon#But didn't the twentieth century subsequently go on to show us unprecedented scale of slaughter and refugee movements and communal strife?#At the end of the day what really separates humanity from other animals? And what separates us from the Martians?#It's not an uncontroversial book- it was written over a hundred years ago for goodness sake and there are questions worth asking#about the way imperialism and arguments about eugenics and population control and all sorts of other dodgy areas operated on Wells' mind#But dear God I really don't think the problem with the book is that 'Humanity didn't save the day!'#Unsatisfying ending? Yes. A FAILURE? No not in my opinion- looks like it was exactly what Wells set out to do#Humanity didn't win the war of the worlds they had a narrow escape and though it might not be martians next time#Why wouldn't disaster return in the future? Sure we've studied their flying machines and even preserved a martian in a jar#But for all our science what have we ACTUALLY learned that will enable us to avert future human catastrophes? Ethically or socially?#Alright rant over- as usual my opinion is not universal nor necessarily well-informed this take just really got my goat

Okay the post was already long enough but I saw someone saying that you won't get clean unless you get it all really soapy with a loofah or scrubber or whatever, which was really funny because it encapsulated ritual hygiene over practical hygiene. The bubbles are for show. They don't actually clean you more. This is even true of toothpaste, which I find really crazy because I can taste sodium laureth sulfate and it's so gross.
When my eczema was very bad, I actually just washed myself with sorbolene moisturiser. It doesn't soap up, but that's not the point; it still acts as a surfactant. This is why there are plenty of soap alternatives which are still able to clean you because it's not about lathering up.
My real feeling is that unless you have a new rag everyday, and live somewhere where leaving out soaking wet rags doesn't create mildew, then maybe shower tools are useful, but otherwise I wouldn't bet on it staying clean for very long. It would grow insta-mildew overnight where I live. Forget loofahs.

Okay okay last post I swear I just really like space. Space jokes that probably no one will understand are my bread and butter I tell you. Like, a normal person would read "If I'm blue could we blame the argon?" and just think im smashing words together. While I'm over here typing that shit grinning and giggling like a super villain because too much argon (<1 precent of the things we breathe in) can cause asphyxiation (being deprived of oxygen) and that turns your face all blue and stuff. Blue also means sad, so this has LAYERS. This is genuis, it's so funny, it's so sad if you think about it for to long but shhh I love it.

Im becoming catholic for personal reasons and you've got to attend these classes and one thing that's sort of stuck out to me is a sense of "this is the right way and only right way" and I think that's one reason why there are so many catholic atheists who still believe in catholic supremacy.
Also I asked my dad (not a catholic) if I had to believe in everything the catholic church does and he said I could believe whatever I wanted and so that's why I'm okay with becoming catholic.
Also, between protestants and catholics alike, there is a sense that they know what the others belive but it's a but nuances. But if I have to hear another life-long catholic tell me what protestants believe in order to prove catholicism is better I will riot.
I really don't have any further insightful things to say rn but thank you for sharing and re: there's a right way to do everything I remember reading a post in an Episcopalian subreddit once that was like "I'm a former Catholic going to an Episcopal church and I don't know what the proper way to hold my hands for communion is and I want to make sure I'm doing it right" and all the Episcopalians were like I don't have a sweet clue what you're talking about man lol

Okay, I actually hate this moment. One of the reasons i am not a fan of BJ as a person but love him as a character. I am glad he said it even if i hated how it was framed.
The "self-righteous" attitude from Hawkeye (and trapper before BJ's time) actually served as rebellion in a hopeless situation that they all got forced into (minus the regular army one ofc). It makes them sympathetic even though they are a cog in a machine in one of the biggest terrorist institution in our time (US army). So when Trapper and Hawkeye (and Klinger) blatantly expressed how much they hate the army and DID something about it, such as when when they swindled the army of thousands of dollars for example (ep: Tuttle), that made the viewer realize where they stand clearly: in opposition of the imperialists. It was framed as "Good" and it made it clear where the show stands... this scene however is foggy at best and war propaganda at worst
Because you see..it is not just "drinking gin and feeling superior" that is not how it started-- but that is almost how it ended. BJ belittles Hawkeye's attempts at fighting against the army and sticking it to Uncle Sam (see: Back Pay S08ep24). It is not that BJ agrees with what is going on, but he is passive. He is not a soldier and never viewed himself as such, but he did not feel bad about being part of the war machine as Hawkeye did. And him saying that all they ever did was feel superior, not only shows you that he was not doing any of these rebellious acts because of ideal-opposition, but also shows that he scorns it and think that in grand scheme of things, it does not matter. It belittles rebellion itself when you take all his actions in consideration and how the narrative does not correct him. What is worse, it belittles it for the murder of an American soldier, not a korean family or a korean baby or a korean village or the rape of korean land. All of which happened on screen.
It just does not sit right with me. "Feeling oh so superior to those military fools who kill each other" Line is really saying "if you scorn at the army, do not forget people DIE in the army. Don't you feel foolish now?"
It explains how BJ thinks which is great, love that for him. But also with how the episode is framed, it makes you think that rebelling is insensitive to the pain soldiers face. Excuse me? whose land you are on? We know it is not your fault you got drafted, but if you gonna play the victim card, give it to someone who deserves it: Koreans.
Those lines would have actually landed well if therewas anything but an American soldier at the end of that rope.

If you didn’t cut that rope, you’d be dead yourself now. I would have done it.
You don’t know that…and I hope to God you never have to find out.

So i'm working on a project that involves looking at people's opinions on public transportation, and something that keeps coming up is that a lot of people like the idea of public transportation but ridership is at the same time low, so I wanna figure out what stops people from riding.
If you could reblog this for bigger sample size that would be so so appreciated
