Remembering Evacuation Day: The End of British Rule in America
As we approach Thanksgiving, there’s another historical milestone worth celebrating on November 24 — Evacuation Day. This lesser-known but significant holiday commemorates the day in 1783 when the British Army officially evacuated New York City, marking the end of British rule in the United States. The event symbolized the conclusion of the American Revolutionary War and the beginning of a new…

Washington Irving
Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, essayist, and diplomat best known for his short stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. He was the first professional American author and also the first to achieve an international reputation.
He influenced such notable 19th-century authors as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, and Walt Whitman; "The unorthodox fantastical sensibilities he displayed in his tales … set the stage for the Romantic and Gothic writers that followed him" (Bradley, vii). Many of the characters in Irving's stories have become household names: Rip Van Winkle, Ichabod Crane, and, of course, the Headless Horseman. He was a notable innovator, with a sense of style and form that kept his writings fresh, and his short stories and sketches have endured as the first fictional chronicles of the American experience.
Early Life
Named after General George Washington (1732-1799), Washington Irving was born in New York City on 8 April 1783, five days after the signing of the Treaty of Paris, ending the American Revolutionary War with Great Britain. He was the last of eleven children born to a prominent Manhattan merchant family. His father, William, was Scottish-born while his mother, Sarah, was English-born. There is little evidence to suggest that Irving attended either public or private school. As a child he read widely in English literature: William Shakespeare, of course, but also the English essayist Joseph Addison as well as the Irish novelists Laurence Sterne and Oliver Goldsmith.
In 1804, he showed signs of tuberculosis, so his brothers sent him to Europe for two years where he kept extensive journals. Upon his return to the United States, he studied law under Judge Josiah Hoffman and passed the bar. Although he would practice law for a short time, he preferred to write. His extensive travels throughout England and the United States fueled his love of writing: "I was always fond of visiting new scenes and observing strange characters and manners. Even when a mere child I began my travels and my tours of discovery into foreign parts and unknown regions of my native city to the frequent alarm of my parents" (quoted in Bradley, 9). Irving came from a very close-knit family who encouraged his writing; this closeness was something that would remain part of his life. Writing was commonplace in the Irving home. For recreation, his brothers wrote poems and essays. His brother Peter had a newspaper The Morning Courier, and at the age of 19, using the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle, Irving wrote a number of satirical essays on the theater and New York society. In many of his writings, Irving often used pseudonyms, such as Jonathan Oldstyle or Geoffrey Crayon.

Montmartre had, in the early 1800s, been an agricultural town peripheral to Paris. You can see its sleepy rural nature in Georges Michel’s 1820 painting of “The Mill of Montmartre:”
But by the end of the 1800s, the neighborhood was a bustling, bohemian hub for artists like Degas, Renoir, or Toulouse-Lautrec. They hung out at cafes like this one, painted by Van Gogh:
{Buy me a coffee} {WHF} {Medium} {Looking Through the Past}
Much, much more on Paris during the Belle Epoque here:

The most delicious summer berries, rendered in frosted rose quartz and ruby by Maison Verger Frères. Brothers Georges and Henri of Maison Verger Frères were hidden figures producing extraordinary Art Moderne work for the premier jewelers of Paris and New York. Not only did Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Boucheron count on Verger to realize their most challenging and imaginative designs, but they prized Georges’ stunning original creations, such as this bracelet. Pieter Jan van Reysschoot - Portrait of Anne Askham - 1740
Petrus Johannes van Reysschoot or Pieter van Reysschoot (Ghent, 18 January 1702 – Ghent, 22 or 24 February 1772) was a Flemish painter and printmaker who is known for his genre scenes, hunting scenes, landscapes, portraits and Christian religious subjects. He spent a large part of his career in England, which earned him the nickname den Engelschman (‘the Englishman’). In England he painted history and sporting (i.e. hunting) scenes and was a portrait painter working on commissions particularly from the Midlands gentry.
Petrus Johannes van Reysschoot was born in Ghent as the son of Frans and Amelberghe vanden Neste. He was the first painter in a family which would include a large number of painters in the 18th century. He studied in France where he was registered at the Academie Royale in Paris in 1730 and later won a prize.
Between circa 1736 and 1743 the artist resided and worked in England. In England he painted history and sporting (i.e. hunting) scenes. He was also a portrait painter working on commissions particularly from the Midlands gentry. He was later nicknamed "the Englishman" because of this long stay in England. He returned to Ghent on the occasion of the death of his father on 27 February 1737. On 4 April of that year he attended, as godfather, the baptism of his nephew Petrus Norbertus van Reysschoot, who would become a prominent painter and art educator. By that time he must have already have become wealthy as he bought from his seven co-heirs, for the sum of 550 livres, the paternal house called ‘de Maeght van Ghendt’’ in the Overpoortstraat, a property burdened with heavy debts.
On the occasion of the installation of Maria Theresa as Countess of Flanders, the States of Flanders had decided to have four portraits of the sovereign painted which would be displayed under as many dais, two at the Ghent City Hall and in Bruges at the Brugse Vrije and the City Hall. Eleven portraits at three quarters size of these paintings were also made for the deputies of the States. By an act of the States dated 29 January 1744, the entire commission was awarded to Petrus Johannes van Reysschoot who at the time was still in London. Van Reysschoot was said to have promised to return soon to Ghent and begin the work within two months of the act.
After his return to Ghent around 1744 he became a sought after history and portrait painter. The governor of the Southern Netherlands Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine visited Ghent in September 1752 and participated in the jay-shooting of the local crossbowmen's guild of Saint George. The Prince shot the jay just like his predecessor as governor Isabella had done at the jay-shooting in Brussels of 1615. Van Reysschoot was commissioned to paint a record of this feat that included portraits of the key members of the crossbowmen’s guild. The painting was delivered in 1657 and placed with much pomp in the Guild hall in November of that year. A small-scale version of the composition not including the portraits was created by the Ghent painter Filips Karel Marissal and also placed in the Guild Hall (both works are now in the Ghent City Museum).
Van Reysschoot was among the first protectors of the Ghent Academy of Arts. His nephew Petrus Norbertus van Reysschoot became one of the most distinguished professors of this institution.
The artist died in the house on the Overpoortstraat, which had remained his property, and was buried by the care of the Alexian brothers on 26 February 1772. In the mortuary book held by the brothers, he is registered as an unmarried painter.

10/xx Michiel Janszoon van Mierevelt, George Villiers Duke of Buckingham, 1626, art gallery of South Australia
This portrait probably shows the Pearl suit George is said to have worn to Paris for the proxy wedding of Charles and Henrietta. According to reports the pearls were loosely attached to the suit so they would fall off as he walked - it was apparently quite the sight.
The pearl rope he is wearing was a gift from James and might have originally been Queen Anna’s prior to her death.

He was painted by James A. Porter, in Soldat Senegalese.
Back in Manhattan, he was a gay icon. He moved in the Harlem Renaissance circles. He was painted by Pavel Tchelitchew, and the painting, Deposition was owned by Lincoln Kirstein.
