Parliament Funkadelic - Swing Down Sweet Chariot - Mothership Connection...

It was Halloween night and Parliament Funkadelic was about to tear the roof off the Houston Summit, ready to bless the crowd with their cosmic brew of interplanetary funk. George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins and the rest of the P-Funk collective were riding the success of their first Top 5 R&B hit, "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)," a track that had earned them the kind of radio play that would bring the masses out to see them live in a stadium-sized arena. 

The group was only five dates into the tour when they arrived in Houston, but they were definitely ready to take it to the stage for an out-of-this-world show like no other. Taped on October 31, 1976, these seldom-seen performances at the Houston Summit represent Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic in their ʼ70s prime, in the era of their Mothership Connection and The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein LPs—a rare opportunity for everyone to get their proper dose of The P-Funk.

I became a Parliament-Funkadelic fan before I heard a note of their music. It was 1977, and I was reading my brother-in-law's copy of Rolling Stone, which contained a concert review of the P-Funk Earth Tour at the back of the magazine. I saw the costumes and the spaceship and despite Toronto radio being nearly completely P-Funk-free at the time, I thought this looked like it must sound amazing. When I finally found my way to hearing something by George Clinton and his band(s) - I think it might have been "Flash Light" but I'm not sure - I wasn't disappointed, and when I started taking photos I made it my mission to get a portrait of anyone who was involved in the P-Funk universe. First up, and quite without expecting it, was keyboardist Bernie Worrell.

I had, of course, seen Bernie Worrell as part of the extended Talking Heads filmed by Jonathan Demme for Stop Making Sense. P-Funk were on something of a hiatus in the '80s, so various members of the group were appearing in all kinds of situations, and Worrell showed up in Toronto as part of the Golden Palominos - drummer Anton Fier's art rock/indie supergroup. Worrell was born in New Jersey and was an accomplished musician, studying at Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music before a meeting with George Clinton inspired him to move to Detroit and become part of the collective of musicians recording and touring as either Parliament or Funkadelic or both.

I shot precisely four frames of Bernie Worrell, who I nervously approached during soundcheck at the El Mocambo, a Toronto club, knowing that I only had a third of a roll of 120 film left in my Mamiya C330. The stew of influences I was processing as a young photographer included Francis Wolff's work on the covers of Blue Note albums, and while I might not have been able to explain it at the time, I was definitely paying homage to (or ripping off, depending on how you look at it) Wolff's work on records by John Coltrane, Bud Powell and "Baby Face" Willette. I'm not sure these photos - the whole of the shoot, as of this post - have ever been published outside my old blog. Bernie Worrell died of cancer in 2016.

We are starting a new fundraiser for Orange Music Studio as we are on the verge of eviction. In a couple of weeks or even sooner, Bill Laswell will be losing the studio. Many of you know from the previous GoFundMe, he has been very sick for a few months. He had a heart problem caused by an infection in December last year. The issue became critical to the point that the paramedics told us we could have lost him had they not been called. After being discharged, Bill has been pretty weak. In April, he suddenly collapsed and was hospitalized again with another infection that resulted in surgery. Since then, Bill has not been able to work and has subsequently lost many gigs and projects, causing financial difficulties - which he has already been struggling with because of Covid lockdowns. A lot of people, many of you reading this, have been helping him, multiple times. He is very much aware of that and the help he is getting is the reason he is still alive and he is forever grateful. He has been managing to pay his rent (home) and medical fees, as well as daily necessities. However, unfortunately, he has not been able to maintain payment for the studio lately.

When Bill was initially informed that he would be kicked out, he thought it might be time to consider giving up Orange and was, in fact, looking forward to changing the location of the studio. But many people called and communicated with him and wanted this facility to be there... He thought he has to take it into consideration that the studio has been benefiting many artists although he has not been able to use it so much recently himself.

Bill wanted to start this new crowdfunding for continuing the studio. This would cover his unpaid and upcoming studio rent.

Orange Music, the studio Bill moved to in 1998 after getting priced out of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, has a storied history of its own. The studio was built in the late 60s for Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, it was originally called Vantone Studio. In the 70s, groups like Jethro Tull, Humble Pie, Brooklyn Bridge, and Carole King recorded there. In the 80s, the studio was renamed Grand Slam Studios and hosted such luminaries as Aerosmith and George Benson. When Laswell took over the studio, he brought with him his international cast of colorful characters, producing such artists as Tabla Beat Science, Sly & Robbie, Matisyahu, Bernie Worrell, and the inimitable Lee “Scratch” Perry. As a maverick in his field, he has always supported other independent artists, who, like himself, are striving for something further, deeper, and true. That’s why he allows other artists and independent labels to use the studio at reduced rates. So many stand to lose if Bill cannot hold onto Orange Music.

George Bernard “Bernie” Worrell, Jr. (April 19, 1944 – June 24, 2016) was a keyboardist for the band and a founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic. When Parliament was touring, he toured and worked band Talking Heads and many others. You can hear how he easily integrated with the band perfectly as their sound expanded in the live shows. In 1997, he and the other members of Parliament were inducted into The Rock& Roll Hall of Fame. Bernie was able to work with various bands in different genres and had just the right touch when playing the keyboard and Moog. He was able to release several of his own albums to showcase his own handiwork. Bernie added an extra element to any group he worked with. Bernie was an important figure in funk, rock, and other genres.

Funkadelic - Tales of Kidd Funkadelic (1976)

This album is their last outing with Westbound, and is made up of a bunch of outtakes for what became “Hardcore Jollies” which was their first release on Warner music. In essence Tales of Kidd Funkadelic, is a bunch of haphazardly thrown together funk outtakes. The album was overlooked and widely panned by critics, but for some reason it very recently resonated with me.These guys have one of my favorite catalogs in modern music because of how playful they were. They were playful with their roster of musicians, playful with the type of music that they made, and with how they put together their projects. They could go from Beatle-esque psychedelic experiments, or get as heavy as Hendrix or try their hands at some hard to listen to avant-jazz electroacoustic stuff accompanied by what seemed like undecipherable spoken word chanting. It is precisely this that makes them an exciting band to listen to after all these years because I feel like every year I discover something new. I either realize a slept on album was a masterpiece or some song that was done later after all their hits showed that this ever evolving cast of psychedelic tricksters were creating music meant for a future we have not arrived at yet. I fell into this record accidentally and it was love at first listen. The fact that this was haphazardly thrown together to satisfy the corporate overlords, speaks to how truly aligned with the cosmic George Clinton truly is.

The opening song “Butt to Buttresucitation” has all the hallmarks of a Sly & The Family Stone song but a bit more stretched out. Bernie Worrell makes the track levitate with his synth work, and the guitars credited to Michael Hampton drip all over the place making it a hard to place, piece of sticky intergalactic funk. The second joint was recognizable because A Tribe Called Quest sampled this one, on Low End Theory. It is a George Clinton driven slice of chorus driven super funk very fun to listen to. Undisco Kidd, is where all the elements come together George’s raps, Bernie's Synth, for this record bass playing is courtesy of Cordell “Boogie” Mosson, whose bass licks keep you levitating.

Other standouts include “I’m never gonna tell it”, or the meandering keyboard wizardry of maestro Bernie Worell on “Tales of Kidd Funkadelic (Opusedelite Years). Funkadelic is a lesson in funktified world building, and the creation of a colorful vibrant black universe made up of its own characters, language, and ideas. This album encapsulates some of that capacity for worldbuilding albeit an album that isn't quite as explored as some of the band's more popular projects, but it is a project that is worth your time.

Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome Parliament 1977, Casablanca Despite this series being predicated on the concept of reviewing selections from my physical record collection, to date it hasn’t focused much on the LPs as objects. There are a few reasons for this:

I don’t know anything about vinyl production, and my ears aren’t good enough to tell the difference between a vinyl pressing and a high-quality digital file anyway, let alone between one pressing and another. (And neither are yours.)

My audience trusts me to write about things about which I am an expert, like botching drug trips and being vague about African dance music.

I obviously have a case of collector brain, but I don’t care about coloured vinyl or gimmicky reissue sleeves.

With that said, it’s undeniably true that the experience of music is mediated by the medium through which it is consumed—and that medium's perceived quality. As is pretty common for people my age (41), there are songs I first heard in my teens and twenties that still sound wrong to me without the specific audio glitches I remember from the versions I downloaded from Limewire/Blogspot.

My copy of Parliament’s Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome is a 2000s era pressing that I picked up on the strength of my love for “Flash Light,” a song that proves beyond doubt that whites were not the first men on the Moon. I listened to Funkentelechy a few times when I bought it eight or nine years ago, and every now and again it makes its way back to my table, but I never got super into it despite it offering exactly what you’d hope for from a George Clinton LP (rubbery bass lines, endless grooves, extremely fly gibberish, Bernie Worrell).

When I decided the other day that I was going to review the record, I was curious about which pressing I have, so I rolled over to Discogs. On the release page I found a handful of extremely Discogs-guy comments about this particular edition:

My immediate thought was something like, “It has always kind of bothered me that the LP cut off the acapella conclusion to ‘Flash Light!’” followed by, “By Jove, maybe the reason I’ve never loved this record is because of the mealy low-end!” And, indeed, despite turning the bass knob on my receiver all the way to the right, the bass doesn’t feel nearly as thick as you’d think a P-Funk album should. So, having found an angle for this review, I bashed out the first few paragraphs before the thought occurred that I’m making these assertions about this pressing without actually comparing it to other sources. Gadzooks.

You know what I did next reader? If your answer was, “Dug out the aux cable and played the streaming version through the same speaker rig,” well, I didn’t do that, because all the piss jars in my bedroom closet have taught me the dangers of obsessive-compulsive behaviour. (And, also, because I thought I might drive the other person in my apartment nuts by playing the record yet again, and still alsomore because I have other shit to do today.) Instead, I skimmed the streaming version a bit on my headphones, had the sense it sounded a bit fuller but not so much so that it would’ve transformed Funkentelechy into a top-tier fav, and called it a day. (I really am peeved about it cutting off the end of “Flash Light” though.)

Right, so anyway, a review. “Bop Gun (Endangered Species)” is standard P-Funk fare; “Sir Nose D Voidoffunk” ambles around for ten minutes like an extremely melted version of a Meat Loaf song, eventually finding a nonsensical peanut-butter-sticky “Three Blind Mice” interpolation that brings the house down; “Wizard of Finance” kind of sounds like Chicago; “Funkentelechy” is another fine mood board of Clintonisms (“Funk is not domestically produced”; “The bigger the headache, the bigger the pill”; “Unfunky possibilities arrive for the makers of Urge Overkill”); “Placebo Syndrome” reminds me strongly of the ending cutscene theme from I think Sonic 2 (?), which is to say I think it’s quite pretty; “Flash Light” we have covered. Alright! This review is over.
