Armed with a script by Lenore Coffee and Lynn Starling, the 1933 pre-Code film Torch Singer is among the rarest and most intimate explorations of a woman by early studio-throttled Hollywood, laying bare a natural ebb and flow of human strength and frailty. The film's grief of womanhood is striking in its visibility. Particularly stinging is a scene after Claudette Colbert's heroine gives birth: the young, unmarried mother weeps in the first embrace of her infant daughter with joy and sorrow–celebrating the life she has created while, it seems, also darkly apologizing for having "inflicted" it.
