I found Geoff Keighley's Tumblr
the fact that we as a society have the muppets and they are not everywhere in our cultural consciousness is appalling. why aren't the muppets hosting the oscars. why aren't the muppets commentating the olympics. why aren't the muppets coming to a theatre near me every year with a new adaptation of a classic novel. genuinely what are we doing.
#tga 2023#geoff keighley#i need the muppets in a rendition of pride and prejudice with kermit as elizabeth miss piggy as darcy and meryl streep as mrs bennett NOW.

Aca Top 10: Sitcom Themes — VoicePlay music video
youtube
Since the emergence of TV sitcoms in the mid-20th century, part of their enduring charm has been the catchy songs that accompany the opening credits. There's something reassuring about a familiar tune that indicates whatever problems the quippy characters might face will be resolved in less than 30 minutes, and probably end with a hug. While VoicePlay can't provide a physical embrace for every listener, this medley is just as fun and entertaining as an episode of your favorite comfort show in a fraction of the time.
Details:
title: Aca Top 10 – Sitcom Themes
original songs / performers: "I'll Be There For You" by The Rembrandts from Friends; [0:20] Saved by the Bell theme by Michael Damian; [0:36] "Hey Beautiful" by The Solids for How I Met Your Mother; [0:45] The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince; [1:05] Seinfeld theme by Jonathan Wolff; [1:18] "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" by Gary Portnoy from Cheers; [1:45] "As Days Go By" by Jesse Frederick for Family Matters; [2:08] "Thank You for Being a Friend" by Cynthia Fee for Golden Girls; [2:30] Mister Ed theme by Jay Livingston; [2:45] Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt theme by The Gregory Brothers; [2:54] "Movin’ On Up" by Ja'Net DuBois for The Jeffersons
written by: "I'll Be There For You" by Michael Skloff, David Crane, Marta Kauffman, Allee Willis, Phil Sōlem, & Danny Wilde; Saved by the Bell theme by Scott Gale; "Hey Beautiful" by Carter Bays, Craig Thomas, Patrick Butler, & C.C. DePhil; The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme by Jeffrey "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Townes & Will "The Fresh Prince" Smith; Seinfeld theme by Jonathan Wolff; "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" by Gary Portnoy & Judy Hart-Angelo; "As Days Go By" by Jesse Frederick & Bennett Salvay; "Thank You for Being a Friend" by Andrew Gold; "Mister Ed" by Jay Livingston & Ray Evans; Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt theme by Jeff Richmond, Michael Gregory, & Evan Gregory; "Movin’ On Up" by Ja'Net DuBois
arranged by: Layne Stein & Earl Elkins Jr.
release date: 19 July 2019
My favorite bits:
that iconic twangy air guitar and the requisite 👏👏👏👏
the fantastic bus "vroom" that was honed through years of "Road Trip" performances 🚌💨
Eli and Earl's squicked out reaction to Geoff's deep "moist" 💧
the light, popping percussion Layne gives to to "Fresh Prince"
Geoff's descending run in the transition into "Seinfeld"
Earl pretending he's going to smack Eli while he's helping with the "Seinfeld" percussion
that lovely four-part harmony for ♫ "get awaaay" ♫
J.None's quick transformation into a pitch-perfect Steve Urkel 🤓
their absolutely joyful tone as they sing the Golden Girls theme
the back row mounting pretend horses during Mr. Ed
animated carrot shenanigans 🥕
Geoff grooving away on that walking bass line in "Movin’ On Up"
Eli and J's gospel hands on that final "oooh!" harmony
Earl's fantastic belt for the end of "Movin’ On Up"
how long they manage to hold on to the ending silence before they burst out laughing
Trivia:
○ Once again, the decision process for this entry in their "Aca Top 10" series was quite contentious. The guys are clearly very passionate about their entertainment preferences.
○ Some of the shows are represented on their shirts, regardless of whether they made the final cut.
Eli — Gilligan from Gilligan's Island (1964–67)
Earl — portraits of the Golden Girls (1985–92) with "squad" above
J.None — Fresh Prince of Bel Air (1990–96) title graphic baseball jersey
Geoff — Joey Tribiani's catchphrase "How you doin'?" from Friends (1994–2004) in the show's title font
Layne — Kelly Kapowski from Saved By the Bell (1989–92)
○ The guys had already recorded a version of "Everywhere You Look" from Full House (1987–95) and Fuller House (2016–20) as the second entry in their PartWork series three years earlier. Earl and Layne covered all five vocal parts for that one.
○ Revisiting some of the memorable shows of their youth got Earl and Layne in a bit of a nostalgic mood, so they gave a shoutout to a favorite after-school snack on social media.

I'm going to elaborate on this in public because it came up in a group chat recently and I realized that most people have no clue what I'm talking about, so here's the full "Geoff Johns put a professional hit out on Marguerite Bennett because she killed Stargirl in Bombshells" conspiracy theory:
Marguerite Bennett was a rising star writing DC Bombshells (an Elseworlds comic set during WWII that starred all of DC's female heroes), Earth-2: World's End, and occasional issues of everything from Batgirl to Injustice: Year Two to Superman: Lois Lane in early 2015 when multiple scoop outlets said she was either a finalist or had already been picked to helm Wonder Woman for DC's Rebirth initiative. These reports included ones that got several other major Rebirth writing assignments correct.
Then she killed off Stargirl in Bombshells via a sacrificial play to defeat a major villain. Suddenly, she wasn't lined up for anything new and Greg Rucka, an incredibly popular former Wonder Woman writer, was surprise announced as the writer for WW Rebirth at Wondercon despite having publicly burned his bridges with the company years earlier (at least in part due to having the Wonder Woman: Earth One book stolen from him and given to Grant Morrison instead) and more-or-less stating he'd never write another book for DC (with an implied "as long as Dan Didio is still in charge").
I'd like to note, before we continue, that negotiations to bring Rucka back to DC had likely been in the works before Bennett killed Courtney, because even though Johns and Rucka are personal friends that's not really a professional bridge that could be rebuilt overnight. Likewise, basically the only promises that would have gotten Rucka to come back were a) writing Renee Montoya again (which he got to do that summer in Convergence) and b) having full creative control over a Wonder Woman book. However, the timing of events is incredibly suspicious given everything else we know about Didio's and Johns' way of exercising power and authority over the creative slate at DC during their tenures.
Anyway: for anyone who doesn't know, Stargirl is heavily based on Geoff Johns' 18-year-old sister who died in the TWA Flight 800 explosion back in 1996, and he largely didn't let other people write her if he could help it. Stargirl is his baby and his tribute to his dead sister, so she's obviously near and dear to his heart.
So the conspiracy theory (which is less a conspiracy theory and more like a well-informed inference) is that Johns was angry at Bennett for not only killing Courtney but killing her via an explosion, and so to punish her he took her off of Wonder Woman Rebirth and more or less blacklisted her, largely preventing her from advancing her career at DC.
While Bennett did have a major health issue in 2015 that lost her at least one book, Angela: Queen of Hel over at Marvel, it's not something that reportedly affected her prospects with DC. Meanwhile, not only was there active confusion from multiple outlets about her apparently being taken off the book and replaced with Rucka (even though she was technically never officially announced as being on it) but the ONLY DC work Bennett got between 2015 and 2018 after finishing Bombshells was continuing that universe in Bombshells United and co-writing Batwoman Rebirth with James Tynion (which I assume still happened because she was in Scott Snyder's "student group" with Tynion and he went to bat for her). Except for those books? She worked exclusively on indie comics.
And since Johns left his position as CCO in 2018? She wrote a RWBY mini in 2019 and got picked as a last-minute replacement on a two-page story for Death Metal in 2020 after the Warren Ellis scandal broke...and then suddenly started getting regular DC gigs again. While she hasn't been given another ongoing yet, she's since written Supergirl's Future State mini, an issue of Superman: Red & Blue, a Batgirls story in Batman: Urban Legends, and had feature stories in the Aquaman 80th Anniversary Special, Wonder Woman #750 and the Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary Special.
And thus: the currently unconfirmed theory that Johns blocked Bennett from recieving writing opportunities within the company because he was bitter she killed off Courtney Whitmore in her Elseworlds comic.
okay so are we far enough from the "Geoff Johns has actual decision-making power at DC" era for the powers that be to hire Marguerite Bennett again? Because I'd like to see her on a relaunched Sensation Comics run soon
like give the people what we want and put Mariko Tamaki on Wonder Woman, Marguerite Bennett on Sensation Comics, and Phil Jimenez on a Donna Troy maxi. Give Nubia back to Stephanie Williams for another run and let someone (maybe Vita Ayala? maybe someone new?) write a joint Cassie-Yara Wonder Girls maxi. Put some effort into the Wonderfam side of the DCU for once, DC.
#in which I impart yet another instance of comics industry drama on everyone#dc comics#marguerite bennett#geoff johns#comics industry#dc meta#dc drama

Betty Reid Soskin, the oldest National Park Service ranger
She was first assigned to the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California the age of 84 and retired in 2022 at the age of 100. Sixteen years. And they said she didn’t play about her position. Her mom and her grandma both lived to their centenarian years as well. A lot of life to live. I know Ms. Betty is looking forward to the next thing in the next chapter in her life.
Here’s a excerpt from her PBS interview in 2022:
Geoff Bennett: “You have said that you have lived lots and lots of lives. You grew up in a [Louisiana] Creole Black family in Oakland, California. You later worked as a file clerk at a segregated union shop. You and your late husband founded one of the first Black-owned record shops, which was in existence for nearly 75 years. You're also a mother to four children. You are a songwriter. You're active in politics throughout your entire life. How has all of that shaped you?”
Betty Reid Soskin: “I have never known how that happened. I know that had I grown up knowing what was ahead. I would never have been able to do it. But I grew up with a sense of surprise. And I also felt that I was jumping out of bed every morning, wondering what was life going to be like? I still am. I'm still jumping out of bed trying to figure out what life is like.”
SN: In the fourth photo above, Ms. Betty is in the middle with her sisters, Lottie and Marjorie Charbonnet. In the fifth photo, Ms. Betty is pictured with her late husband Mel and their kids: Rick Reid, Bob Reid, David Reid and Dorian Reid.
And did I mention she wrote a book?

Dr. Paul Farmer on How US Haiti Policy, Revealed By WikiLeaks, Undermines Democracy & Health
DemocracyNow.org - Dr. Paul Farmer, who was worked in Haiti for nearly three decades and now serves as the the U.N. Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti, discusses how U.S.-backed coups and neo-liberal programs have not only subverted Haiti's democracy, but also seriously weakened its public health.
On Democracy Now!, Dr. Farmer addresses the U.S. influence in Haiti in the context of recent WikiLeaks disclosures of classified U.S. diplomatic cables that documented the United States supported recent elections, despite the exclusion of Haiti's most popular political group, the Famni Lavalas.
The cables also documented that the United States also advocated behind the scenes to block an effort to raise the minimum wage in Haiti. Dr. Farmer's new book, "Haiti After the Earthquake," has just been published.

For our Weekend Spotlight, Geoff Bennett spoke to Nelson while he was in Washington, D.C., for the unveiling of his portrait of humanitarian chef José Andrés at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.

Alicia Vikander in Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2015)
Cast: Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac, Sonoya Mizuno, Corey Johnson, Claire Selby, Symara A. Templeman, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Tiffany Pisani, Elina Alminas. Screenplay: Alex Garland. Cinematography: Rob Hardy. Production design: Mark Digby. Film editing: Mark Day. Music: Geoff Barrow, Ben Salisbury.
Screenwriter Alex Garland's debut as director has a lot going for it: a tightly provocative and suspenseful Oscar-nominated screenplay (also by Garland), a superb trio of stars, and special effects that don't overwhelm the story. The effects won Oscars for Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Williams Ardington, and Sara Bennett, overcoming competitors with far more flash and dazzle: Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller), The Martian (Ridley Scott), The Revenant (Alejandro González Iñárritu), and Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens (J.J. Abrams). For once, special effects were kept on the human scale, largely to present Ava (Alicia Vikander) as the ambiguous cross between human being and robot on which the screenplay's exploration of the ethics of artificial intelligence depends. Ava (whose name is a variant spelling of "Eve") is the creation of Nathan (Oscar Isaac), a superwealthy tech genius who made his fortune with an Internet search engine not named Google, which he uses as the software for his experiment. He lures a young coder, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), to his isolated retreat on the pretext that he wants Caleb to apply the Turing test on Ava. Nathan's unstated aims are far more extensive, and Caleb sees through them quickly. But neither of them is quite as quick on the uptake as Ava. Gleeson is convincingly geeky as Caleb, and Isaac, in yet another performance that establishes him as one of our most chameleonic actors, evokes the self-absorption and questionable ethics of any number of tech billionaires. But it's Vikander who steals the honors with Ava's sly mixture of naïveté and nascent cunning. The only thing I can fault Ex Machina for is a conventional sci-fi ending that feels out of keeping with the intelligent questioning of the middle part of the script and seems too much like a setup for a sequel.
