OPLA Episode 7 gets its own post. They really took the edge off Belle-mère.

Like, how hard would've it have been to have included the above and below, then had Belle-mère be overcome (like in the manga). I mean Sham, from the Kuro Neko Pirates got more action.

Ditched the cig too. I get that Sanji's cigarette representation is probably too much for current times, but the woman was a chain smoker and
Also, having her be Nami's conscience—which she is—but not publicly over the matter of shoplifting. Not saying that shoplifting's right, but Belle-mère doesn't make Nami apologise for her actions to Genzo. Is it because we can only have one dubious parental figure in Zeff? Or cos' she was a marine? Or a woman? Or what? Like this scene tells us so much not only about her, but about Nami (and Genzo) (below):

where she's basically telling Genzo that it's not such a big deal (the theft), flirts with and woos him to get what she wants (Nami's M.O.), and Nami gets to keep the book, and doesn't have to do any chores around the village to work it off!?! Like????

This above, where Belle-mère does show that she's upset, and also that they're poor, and also leading into Nami's childish tantrum about not having enough money (although over time), carries a lot more weight and angst (to me), than whatever they sanitised it with in the live action (it's similar, but it misses a lot of nuances).
And also, to weaken the historical bond between Nojiko and Nami, that seems to be almost criminal.

Panels above where Nojiko got her tattoos so that Nami wouldn't feel so bad about having to wear Arlong's. This is a flashback after all the fighting is over, so maybe episode 8 will address some of these things. But they flattened Nami's story out, rather than enhanced it.
In the live action, Nojiko and Nami have been at odds for the last nine years or so, and Nojiko is visibly hostile to her.
The iconic scene of Luffy placing the hat on Nami's head was still very powerful, and it was always about Luffy, but about Nami too. And I feel that OPLA has made her story less about her and more about Luffy, I guess. Like, I'd rather view her as someone resilient and loved who needed help, rather than someone who only needs help. OPLA has shown her resilience, but it has relegated Belle-mère and Nojiko to minor side characters, rather than major catalysts, I feel.
I still enjoyed the episode. Especially the extra Garp & Zeff exchanges, and Helpmeppo & Koby storylines, but this is Nami's pivotal story.

While I enjoyed OPLA, I still absolutely hate how the Arlong arc went down. Nojiko, Genzo, and the other villagers truly and genuinely hated Nami. Why?! It was perfectly fine how it was in the Manga. Why change it?
Sure, there are a few other changes I didn't like, but this? How did this get approved?

opla thoughts:
i already heard abt this from someone on tiktok but it was still a little disappointing to me that they changed namis story. like don’t get me wrong it was amazing and i did end up crying at one point but like
the tragedy in the live action of nami sacrificing herself for her village, and the villagers not knowing abt her deal with arlong and hating her for it, thinking she actually joined up with arlong, including her own sister, was good but i prefer the animanga version. because not only is there the tragedy of namis abuse at arlongs hands and being forced to work for her mothers killer, and the villagers hating her, there’s the reveal that they knew all along. it’s like a double whammy of tragedy
nami works to free the village, with this basically impossible deal that arlong had no intention of honoring, while shouldering the villagers hatred, because even if they don’t know what she’s doing, it’s her home and family and she’ll save them no matter what. only the whole time, they knew exactly what she was doing, because genzo got suspicious on his own and made nojiko tell him, and they’ve been trying to make her hate them so she’ll give up on saving them and run away to live her own life. it’s just sooooo good. the tragedy of both sides trying to save each other and accepting that they need to be hated to do that, because they want the best for the other even if that means theyll never see each other again. because the villagers wanted nami to run and live her own life, and if she did then they knew she could never come back again because of arlong obvs. and on the other side i fully believe if namis deal had worked out she would’ve left cocoyasi and never come back bc that’s what she believed the villagers would want
auuughhh it’s just sooooo gooood. both trying to do what they think is best for the other but being too stubborn to try and work out a better way. being in a shitty situation and trying desperately to do what you can even if it hurts you
and also the individual relationships! like i wasn’t a huge fan of the fact that nojiko didn’t know abt the deal and also hated nami. i rlly like how in the manga nami still has one person she can trust and rely on even if nojiko can’t really help out, and she won’t let her try to help. and nojiko watching her sister work herself into the ground and not being able to do anything except have a home for her to come back too. and i believe she also knew about genzo and the villagers plans too, so seeing nami hurt by the villagers hatred and knowing it’s false but not being able to tell her
and genzo too! he was the one who realized that nami working with arlong was suspicious, made nojiko tell him about the deal, and came up with the whole plan. because before arlong came he knew nojiko and nami best he was basically their dad. he was watching over her when she was with arlong and he saw her being hurt but he couldn’t do anything!! auuughh!!! he wore that stupid pinwheel on his hat for her!! bc it made her laugh!!
in conclusion i liked the live action but im sad that they took away a lot of the depth of some of the side characters and boiled it down to just “oh yeah they all hate her for real”
#hopefully this makes any sense#btw it has been ages since i read the manga so this is supplemented by some wiki research#clambles#posts from the ocean#one piece#one piece live action#clam piece irl#cat burglar nami#nami one piece#op nami#genzo one piece#nojiko one piece#opla spoilers#i guess??

"You can stop now. Even you know there's no point now. You fought very well, carrying our lives on your back all this time. Joining them must have been even more painful for you than being cut through the heart. You fought very well. Leave the village now."

OPLA: episode 8: pinwheels and mikan
OPLA episode 8: I assume that those who for the story is new, feel a lot more with Nami's Bellemère graveside scene—it was nice to keep the pinwheels with a tangerine motif (Nami's tattoo and the actual one she made, which Bellemère had made before for her in the live action), and I guess that the cultural significance might've been diminished if they were kept faithful to the manga, as in on Genzo's hat and more generically in front of Bellemère's grave.

When I visited Aomori, and particular Osorezan, which is on Lake Usori--Osorezan symbolising hell, and the lake, purgatory (and also having been sacred to the Ainu), pinwheels dotted the foreshore, and also many of the monuments, statues (many mizuko) and graveyard monuments to, in particular, honour children who have died (and cannot fulfil their filial duty).

picture from this post.
Kinda reversed with Nami's story, because neither Bellemère nor Nami could fulfil their obligations to one another, and I don't think Oda has ever made a big fuss of it (Genzo wore the pinwheel
cos it made Nami laugh, as I recall). According to a quick google, it represents the cycle of life. Adult to child again on death.

Mikan (tangerines, although, not really) are also often offerings for jizou statues, of which mizuko in particular look over children (not a mizuko below, and see link above). But mikan are often placed generally at grave markers and so forth.

Picture from this post.
Genzo kept his pinwheel for one scene in the live action. Even if they didn't have time to explain how important he had been to Nami and Bellemère

Would have loved to have seen it a little more.

Also, considering how important laughter and smiling is to the series as a whole, I would've liked a non-cheesy way, I guess, to emphasise how much Nami smiled when she was a child, and how important it was to Genzo that she keeps smiling, and that he knew she would, because she was free and on the right path.
Overall, though, good-ish development with Luffy and Garp. I guess, considering budget restraints, they'll try to concentrate on the two of them as a main subplot? I'm not exactly sure why they included it so early. Maybe to ground it in a bit of TV reality? Or to have a sure way of maintaining direction and tension. So the general viewer can know who Luffy is, maybe. I didn't mind, but maybe not at the expense of other parts of the story.
I did tear up at the boots on the barrel scene, although I've always thought that the crew has superb balance. Would've liked to have had the word 'nakama' included instead of 'friend', but that's for a future adaptation, I think. Helmeppo and Koby coming along swimmingly. Benn still looking like a geography teacher (sorry @nicos-robin!). Mihawk and Shanks camping it up on the beach (Lucky Roux looks well put together!). And Smoker being dramatic! Looking forward to the next season!
