Superman (1978) and the Female Gaze
Tumblr media
In honor of Superman’s 85th birthday, I got to see the 1978 movie in theaters (!!!) and I realized how much it appeals to the female gaze, which I would NOT have expected for a male-led superhero movie from the 70s.
To elaborate:
I’ve always cringed a little at Lois’ cheesy voiceover during the flying sequence, but I realized it’s actually a whole scene from Lois’ perspective. It gets in her head and explores her thoughts and feelings. It doesn’t portray her as “Superman’s girlfriend” from his perspective, focused on his viewpoint. The entire scene is Superman from Lois’ perspective.
Even the cinematography (especially in that scene but also throughout the movie) caters to the female gaze. There’s so much focus on their hands — Lois and Superman holding hands, Superman gently cradling her face, etc. There’s a focus on eye contact, on body language. Superman’s muscles aren’t emphasized — instead the camera lingers on his eyes and his smile. Through the visuals, both leads are very humanized instead of gratuitously sexualized like many superhero movies ever since.
Tumblr media
Also, Christopher Reeve’s Superman emerges as such an unexpected example of positive masculinity. In the late 70s, Family Feud’s host was kissing every female contestant on his show, consent be damned. ERA and the feminist movement were losing ground to the New Right. The macho male hero was already a staple thanks to characters like James Bond and advertising campaigns like the Marlboro Man. Men Were Manly.
In contrast, while Superman is held up as a quintessential “manly male protagonist” admired by many, he very pointedly does not fall into the action hero male power fantasy stereotype of “I’m a tough macho man who affirms my masculinity by harassing and sleeping with lots of women and who expresses emotions by hitting things and yelling at people. Wow look at me punch things and shoot guns! I’m so strong!” Instead, he’s always gentle. He smiles brightly, he laughs, he cracks jokes, he waves as he flies off. He’s a huge guy, but he’s not intimidating unless he wants to be because he’s just so kind and down-to-earth. He’s much more in line with a stereotypically feminine fantasy of a “kind, respectful, warm guy who makes me laugh” rather than the male power fantasy more common in this genre.
There’s also the way female characters are treated. Lois is Superman’s love interest, but she’s also more than that. She’s her own character with her own voice. She’s a tough, snarky, take-charge, no-nonsense, competent career woman who goes after what she wants fiercely. She grouches and rants with her signature attitude, and Clark just stands there smiling at her because he thinks she’s amazing exactly as she is. It’s the fantasy of an independent woman with traditionally “unfeminine” traits who’s loved and celebrated for being herself. Clark doesn’t want to tame her — he adores her and supports her.
In addition, Miss Teschmacher is stereotyped as the villain’s “sexy but a bit dumb” girlfriend/sidekick, yet she’s still allowed some depth. Superman’s treatment of her stood out to me because this woman has helped Luthor endanger innocent people and nearly kill Superman himself, yet he’s still kind and respectful toward her. Because he always treats women like that, no matter who they are or what they’ve done to him. She wistfully says “Why can’t I ever get it on with a good guy?” instead of a toxic one, and he touches her face tenderly and gives her a reassuring smile. He has compassion for her, as well as hope that her life will improve.
There’s also the climax. There really isn’t much violence (it’s all natural disaster stuff). The whole “hero does something dramatic to save his love interest” is a time-honored action movie cliche, but this feels different somehow. It feels more like the climax of a romance movie than an action movie in some ways. Maybe it is, again, the focus on tenderness. On the way Superman cradles Lois’ dead body so gently and then cries. On the way he allows himself to feel, to express his emotions, instead of heading out to punch something as an outlet for his grief. Lois isn’t a love interest to be won — she’s a person to be cherished, which is 100% consistent with the female gaze.
Just, 👏 THE FEMALE GAZE AND POSITIVE MASCULINITY Y’ALL 👏

hello!! i just wanted to ask- i wanna do an ouat rewatch bc CAPTAIN SWANN but its pretty long and i honestly dont care for the other characters/how badly the overall writing was handled.. which are your favourite captain swan eps? anything them centered and i think ill just skip around to rewatch their romance as they did invent romance 😭😭 ty in advance <3
they absolutely did invent romance, you are right about that and i love them so much
UHMMMM as far as my favorite CS eps, here’s a roadmap of what I personally consider key eps in their journey (some of this is from memory but I haven’t done a full rewatch in a while so i’m going through the episode list as a refresher)
2x06: Tallahassee--this is a must-watch ep for any CS fan, and I really think this is the episode that sparked the fire that CS would become as a fandom. It has everything--flirtatious banter, all kinds of tension, deliberate parallels drawn between Emma and Killian’s pasts, as well as their first meeting being intercut with her relationship with Neal (which serves, especially in hindsight, to highlight just how sketchy that relationship was, and why she couldn’t bring herself to trust Killian--because the last time she felt this way about anyone, it ended horribly)
2x08 and 2x09: Into the Deep and Queen of Hearts--these episodes cover the race to the portal between Emma&co and Hook/Cora and while they don’t do a ton for CS as a relationship since they’re still enemies at this point, it lays great foundation for their future relationship development. Plus, sexy swordfight, Hook going out of his way to save Aurora’s heart--he may be a pirate, but he has standards ok--and Emma realizing Cora can’t remove her heart without her permission? Poetic Cinema
2x11: The Outsider--more of a Killian-centric episode, it shows a lot of Killian at his worst but it’s necessary for his overall character arc and I genuinely love looking back and seeing just how far he managed to come, to the point of eventually even letting go of his (very understandable) grudge against Rumplestiltskin.
2x12: In the Name of the Brother--am I including this purely for Emma&Hook banter in the hospital, and Killian saying ‘hey beautiful’ when he’s lying on the road because he just got hit by a fucking car? You bet I am. Also, go to youtube and look up ‘ouat season two deleted scene jello’, because it’s beautiful and there was a tremendous outcry in the fandom when we realized it had been cut from the episode lmao (It’s also the episode that made me start shipping Frankenwolf, which I’m still sad never went anywhere, but they had a lot of potential and great chemistry.)
2x22: And Straight On Till Morning--A few of the episodes in between have some fun minor interactions and flashbacks (and I always approve of episodes where Killian gets one up on Rumple, so 2x15 is fun for me if i ignore all the Neal bits) but the finale is where we finally get a glimpse of who Killian could be beyond his need for revenge. He didn’t have to come back, he didn’t have to bring back the bean and help the town--but he did.
Season 3a: there’s a lot of really good stuff here for Hook and Emma that is interwoven between the A plots of other episodes. I think, as far as half-season arcs go, it’s one of the best (and everything after 4a bombed hard, but I digress) But there are a few episodes that stand out if you don’t want to watch the whole season. (I recommend starting with the premier though, it was a really solid season starter overall.)
3x05: Good Form--this is the culmination of David’s poisoned-by-dreamshade arc, and is also Peak Captain Charming Bromance. Hook not only keeping David’s secret, but doing everything he can to help save him??? Poetic cinema. It also provides some crucial Killian backstory, showing how he lost his brother to the very same dreamshade. Plus, the character development--Pan offers Killian a chance to escape the island with Emma if he kills David, and instead, he saves him, refusing the deal and damn the consequences. Also also? The first CS kiss which drove the fandom WILD.
3X06: Ariel--not only to I love OUaT’s take on Ariel, but this episode has the infamous Echo Cave scene, which involves a lot of feelsy confessions and Killian being the one to tell everyone that Neal is alive and helping Emma save him despite his own growing feelings for her.....IT’S JUST A LOT AND I LOVE IT.
3x07: Dark Hallow--oh man, I’d forgotten about this episode, but it has Killian and Neal fighting over Emma, which may sound eye-roll worthy, but Emma is allowed to tear them a new one about it and it’s one of the few times she’s allowed to actually???? put her own feelings first so I have to include it here on spec
3x11 and 3x12: Going Home and New York City Serenade--these mark the end of 3a and start of 3b respectively, and it has some amazing shit like Killian vowing never to forget Emma and Emma smiling as she replies, “Good.” And then she and Henry are in New York with their memories completely altered, but Killian shows up because Storybrooke is back and in jeopardy, and he helps Emma get back to her family and her home and, much later, Emma finds out he sold the Jolly Roger to be able to do it and it’s just. It’s beautiful ok.
3x17: The Jolly Roger--there’s honestly not a whole lot in the back half of season 3 (until the CS movie) but of course anything named for Hook is a must-watch, and this is where we get the iconic line I swear on Emma Swan--which is Killian saying he’s in love with her before he even realizes it. We also find out just what he did to Ariel, and his attempts to make amends are what lead to Zelena being able to curse him, so it’s great from a character perspective as well.
The next four episodes round out the end of the season, and there’s a lot of great stuff in them--Hook refusing to get Emma to kiss him, but Emma feeling like she can’t trust him because he didn’t tell her about the curse to begin with, and then kissing him anyway to save his life regardless of the consequences.... but the only ones that are absolutely necessary are the final two episodes.
They are colloquially termed ‘The Captain Swan Movie’ for a reason, after all.
Killian and Emma essentially have an entire Time Travel adventure all to themselves, where they accidentally ruin her parents first meeting and have to fix it so that she’ll even be born, Emma finally getting into the storybook, the pair of them dancing at a ball, Killian rushing to save Emma only for her to get out of the cell herself, because “The only one who saves me is me.” Killian saying “I would go to the ends of the world for her... or time.” Finally fixing the timeline and making it back to Storybrooke and Killian feeling like he doesn’t deserve a place at the table so he doesn’t go inside, but Emma comes out to him anyway and finds out he gave up the Jolly Roger for her, the true start to their relationship...... IM CRYING JUST THINKING ABOUT IT I’M SORRY.
I personally really enjoyed 4a, the Frozen arc was one of the last good half-season arcs of the show, but a lot of people disliked it so it’s really up to interpretation. I don’t have as many Intense Opinions on this season (except hating almost everything about 4b and the queens of darkness arc), but I will say the episodes with good Killian/CS moments are 4x02 (Emma nearly freezes to death, Killian is desperate to save her, Captain Charming teamwork, my heart hurts), 4x04 (Emma asks Killian out on a real date, he tries to get his real hand back from Gold, things go massively awry and he winds up back under Gold’s thumb), 4x08 (Killian tries to save Emma from Gold’s plans), 4x11 (the 4a finale is just great in general), and then..... it cannot be overstated how much I hate season 4b, but 4x15 is the Killian-centric ep where his past with Ursula is revealed and he makes amends to her in order to get her to leave the QoD alliance and it’s great character stuff for him, and then there’s the season 4 finale.
Both parts are worth watching, if only because Deckhand Coward Hook still being a braver, more heroic man than ‘Hero Rumplestiltskin’ warms the very cockles of my heart, and of course the second part of the finale has him helping Henry to save Emma and it’s beautiful and also Emma watches him die for her and it is angsty as FUCK but gods I love it. Here’s where it gets tricky, though--my recommendation is, turn the episode off right after Emma finds Killian back in the present day of Storybrooke and they reunite.
Just turn off the episode there and skip right ahead to the s6 musical episode (Emma and Killian’s wedding ep) and pretend they got married and none of seasons 5 or 6 ever happened. >.> (Although I will say certain parts of the Underworld arc were incredibly feelsy despite how much I overall hated the season: 5x11 (the 5a finale, Killian as the dark one STILL being a better man than rumple, we love to see it), 5x15 (I am not immune to Brothers Jones feelings ok), 5x20 (emma literally takes a True Love Test trying to find a way to save killian, you don’t get more romantic than that--also Killian telling Emma to promise she won’t put her armor back up just because she lost him again??? my HEART), 5x21 (Hook does what he can from the Underworld anyway and zeus sends him back to Emma, they really just said ‘today I will invent romance’ and then Did That)
And then, yeah, just skip to the wedding. It’s beautiful, I enjoyed the music, personally, though I know musical episodes are hit or miss with most people. And if you turn it off when the last musical number starts (after the wedding ceremony, I believe) you can pretend it was the end of the show! =DDD
.....Oh my god I just rambled for years. I HOPE YOU FIND THIS USEFUL, ANON. I 100% support a CS-centered rewatch, their episodes were consistently some of the best across the entire series, and they are truly one of my favorite romances of all time.

I just rewatched Plata Quemada/Burnt Money for the first time in years and WOW that movie is a lot.
Especially the intensity of Ángel and Nene’s relationship and the two very different ways they struggle with being gay and the very different ways they’re terrified that the other will leave him.
Ángel’s biggest struggle is trying to figure out what to listen to inside himself. He obviously loves Nene, desperately wants Nene to stay, and yet his anxieties and voices make him act and react in ways that push Nene away. He even admits to Nene on the beach that he’s scared of Nene leaving, scared he’s going to find someone better. And yet those feelings conflict with the religious paranoias and the ways he feels he has to push Nene away. It’s interesting because any time Ángel is looking at Nene without Nene’s knowledge, you can see the conflict in him; he loves Nene, he desperately wants this, and yet there’s this terror in him, whether specifically religious or partly injected by the voices, partly by religion.
The scene where he climbs back into bed after doing pushups is a parallel to that first sleeping scene, and it’s obvious that there’s the desire there, but when Nene rolls over, it’s like something in Ángel spooks and he just can’t handle it. Every moment of Ángel watching Nene is tinged with that: a desire that terrifies him, that simultaneously seems to make him want to grab Nene and to push him away. He’s absolutely terrified that Nene is going to leave him. Every time Nene is away from him, his psychosis spikes. Every time Nene takes care of him, there’s this obvious fight inside him between clinging to it and pushing it away. There’s the scene where Ángel is in his room reading his dictionary and Nene is outside the door, desperately asking Ángel what he can do to help, asking Ángel to talk to him, say something. Ángel takes his crucifix necklace and shoves it in his mouth. His religion and paranoia silencing him because he doesn’t know how to reconcile them and his desire and emotions.
And I don’t think the moment that this finally solidifies into one thing or the other is the scene on the floor of Giselle’s apartment, the one where Ángel and Nene are lying on each other. I think it actually solidifies when Ángel holds the gun to Nene and confronts him about Giselle. This specifically is the moment Ángel breaks through everything and makes a sort of decision. He knows he’s terrified of religious retribution, sin, hell, whatever it is. But I think he realizes he’s more terrified of Nene leaving. He threatens a breakdown if Nene leaves, but we see over and over again that Nene is just as affected when he’s away from Ángel. When Ángel is clawing at the wallpaper because he thinks Nene has left him, and Nene talks him down, I don’t think the religious paranoia is present here. It’s fully just grief and anger and fear and all these other emotions crashing down on him, and then the relief when Nene returns and comforts him. I think these two moments are Ángel shaking off the shade of paranoia and religiosity that has plagued him. He even says to Nene “Is it you, Nene? It’s me, Ángel.” Part of that is an accusation of sorts towards Nene for leaving, for seeming to have feelings for someone else when it’s always just been the two of them as The Twins. But part of it is also a message, a way for Ángel to show Nene that his mind has cleared a little, that he’s still around and still feels that love.
Nene is so interesting because not only is he single-mindedly in love with Ángel and terrified that Ángel is going to leave him, his love for Ángel only increases the more unwell Ángel gets. Which obviously scares the absolute shit out of him. He doesn’t struggle with being gay as a concept; he struggles with how deeply and completely he loves Ángel. Ángel is way, way more important than any money: when he’s shot during the car robbery, Nene drops everything to go to Ángel, and completely forgets about the money in favor of getting Ángel to safety. He admits to Giselle that he’d do anything for Ángel, that he’d die for him. And yet here he is, with Giselle, with these random men, trying to escape it all. I think the blowjob encounter in the restroom and the scene where he’s tending to Ángel’s wound and tries to make it into something more are very connected. Nene spends so much of his time holding Ángel, touching Ángel, while Ángel is unable to respond like he used to. Even when Nene is tending to his shoulder and starts to move things in a more sexual direction, it’s obvious that Ángel is struggling with the problems in his own mind and which voices or instincts to listen to. Nene is in love with him, wants the relationship to be physical like it has been for years, but Ángel is sliding deeper into this weird religious psychosis and just can’t. So Nene turns to random sex.
But it’s interesting that the type of sex that Nene forces that random man into isn’t the man giving him a blowjob, it’s him blowing the random stranger. Even getting off becomes this weird replacement fantasy. Ángel won’t let Nene touch him, which hurts Nene, but even more than that (and evident in this scene), Ángel won’t let Nene help him. When Nene tries to help, Ángel pushes him away. When Nene leaves, Ángel freaks out. Ángel is receding into himself in a way that’s confusing and frightening, his obsessions and paranoias are increasing to the point where he doesn’t even seem to recognize Nene at one point. But Nene is obviously a natural carer; his reaction to Giselle when she’s crying on her bed is genuine, I think. But he’s still using her as a stand-in for Ángel. Ángel won’t let him help. Ángel is upset and scared and suicidal, but he won’t let Nene help. Giselle, in that scene, admits she wants to die like Ángel wants to die, tells Nene to go away, but Nene pushes until she lets him hold her. Until she “lets” him help her, suggesting they run away together. But it’s another stand-in for Ángel, because at least she’ll let him help.
He confesses to Giselle that he thinks Ángel knows him more than anyone, that he’ll do absolutely anything for Ángel, including get himself killed. But he also says he doesn’t “get” Ángel, and I think wrapped up in that is the fear. When Giselle points out that Nene is in love with Ángel, I think it scares him because he hasn’t put it that way before, but I also think it scares him because Ángel has been drifting away, receding into his head, and he’s scared Ángel doesn’t feel that way anymore. So when he gets home and Ángel has OD’ed, he’s terrified but also really guilty. And then when Ángel confesses his insecurities and then learns Nene has cheated on him, he freaks out and shoots the turntable, because he feels guilty for doubting, because he’s hurting, because they’re suddenly the most out of sync they’ve ever been.
It’s interesting because their entire relationship is so deeply codependent and deeply dedicated and yet they’re both at a loss about how to communicate with each other as Ángel slides deeper into his mental illness and Nene flounders on how to help him. And I think the biggest misunderstanding throughout the entire film, obvious in both their dialogue narrations/dialogue with others and their actions, is that they’re both so deeply in love with and dedicated to each other and terrified of being left alone that they have no idea how to express any of it. Neither of them are falling out of love or anything, they’re both just fucking scared. Of different things, but they’re still scared.
But when their fear becomes about life or death, purely about survival, they return to each other. They’re The Twins again, but I think it’s different this time from the narration about knowing they’re always The Twins on a job. This time it’s returning to the way they had been before. They almost never take eyes off each other except when they’re shooting. When they’re finally lying together, touching each other in a purely casual and romantic way for the first time since the film opened (since I assume that the first shot of the two of them asleep in the bed is a sort of narrative flashback), Ángel confesses that his voices are gone. Ángel and Nene are finally able to be close again, and Ángel’s voices have disappeared. The word “love” isn’t uttered by either of them ever in the film, but I think in this scene they both absolutely know it’s there and the entire conversation is a much more back-and-forth confession of love than any of the other scenes before. When the military starts drilling, it’s Ángel that initiates the kiss between him and Nene; the first time he’s initiated the entire movie. The absolute desperation with which Nene screams Ángel’s name over and over again when Ángel is in the hallway with Cuervo is heartbreaking.
And when Nene is shot, it’s here that suddenly Nene and Ángel switch places. Nene said to Giselle that he thought Ángel knew him basically like they were one person. Suddenly Ángel is holding Nene the way Nene held him when he OD’ed, the way Nene held him when he was having a breakdown in Giselle’s bedroom. Suddenly Ángel hears no voices and Nene is hearing them as he’s dying. Suddenly Ángel is the caregiver when Nene had been before. Nene said he’d get himself killed for Ángel, but because they’re basically one person, we also know that Ángel would die for Nene. Everyone else is dead, but I think if they were both alive they’d still be fighting. In the end, Ángel isn’t still firing the gun because he’s fighting for his life. Nene’s dead so he’s going to die too. He’s not still firing his gun because he’s trying to stay alive, he’s doing it because he knows that he wants to kill as many people as possible for Nene’s death, and because Nene would do the same for him. He tells Nene, “Do you think I’d leave without you?” and “In a few minutes we’ll be far away from here.” There’s no way they’re living without each other; I don’t think that was ever in the plan.

S414 - ‘EL MAYARAH’ HEALED MY HEART (2/2 aka Karadox Edition)
Well, hello, hello, ladies, gentleman and esteemed NBs. We are gathered here today to witness me, a karadox fan who is too deep, commentate on and (over)analyse the happenings of that delicious episode that is Supergirl 4x14 Stand and Deliver. In the proceeding post, I will be going through many, many frames. So hold on to your dashes cause this is gonna be a hecka long post.
Warning: Again, LONG LONG post. 95 screenshots, guys. I recommend reading this on a computer. MUCH karadox. Including Brainy’s amazing speech, ofc . And the amazingness that was Kara Zor El.
Now, my friends. Where to start? What’s this? You wanted to go to the hand holding? We shall get there in due time. For now let us go start earlier at the 7:11 timestamp that I have. In which Brainy gets given -
The Letter
Tumblr media
This is Querl Dox aka Brainy. His eyebrows furrowed as one of their DEO targets was captured. I might say, he’s cautious about what this letter might be. Who knows? It could have been a threat that Menagerie or The Elite might have wanted to pass on.
Tumblr media
Nah, it’s a note from Supergirl, and it made him smile.
Tumblr media
I mean, it’s a very cute-looking note (I love Kara’s handwriting, mine’s a mess). She could’ve just written ‘from Supergirl’ but nah, gotta draw that logo in. Love it. Go Kara!
Tumblr media
“Supergirl left us a present, and a note.” Brainy whips this note from behind his back. He can’t just bring the note normally. No, he’s gotta whip it out like ‘surprise b*tch’. He not only likes to show off in front of Kara, but also likes to show off in Kara’s stead.
Tumblr media
“Says: you’re welcome.” Brainy looks like he’s trying to return to a neutral expression here, but his tone didn’t quite hide his smugness. And throughout this scene he still looks like he wants to keep smirking.
Now, we know that Brainy’s on Kara’s side. He’s part of the super-friends, of course. I’m pretty sure that Brainy’s supposed to at least pretend he’s backing the DEO fully. But he can’t help himself from celebrating a victory for Supergirl. His loyalty is always towards Kara, and I like how they keep this consistent even if (well, especially) Kara’s not around.
Alright, now it’s time for Kara to finally interact properly with -
Brainy!
Tumblr media
“Brainy!” says Kara. What does that mean? Nothing much, she just turned around when she saw heard the door open and saw Brainy. But after several episodes of no proper interaction, it’s nice to hear her say his name. Yeah, yeah, I squealed, this is how deprived we were.
Tumblr media
And then, unprompted, immediately after saying his name, she walks over to stand next to him. Must...not...overanalyse...must....resist....can’t --- AIGHT look she moved next to him. Didn’t need to. Nia’s not moving. Brainy wasn’t talking to her yet. Might one say she subconsciously feels comfortable being next to Brainy?! MIGHT ONE --- okay fine, I’m reaching, I’ll stop. But go on. Rewatch the clip. 23:10 is the timestamp.
Tumblr media
Oh yes, this is probably why they wanted Kara to move. To get this angle specifically and reaffirm the #SpouseEnergy radiating of these two. Exasperated dad and amused mum. Look at it. Breathe it in. Rejoice.
Tumblr media
Oh, this is just to compliment Melisa Benoist and Jesse Rath, just cause they move super in sync here, almost like you’d see in a cartoon/anime and I just found it pleasing. Moving on.
Tumblr media
Alright, the next screencap is where Brainy thinks he’ll never see his ring again and is understandably in a bit of a shock. He looks at Nia and then Kara, then back at J’onn. Kara looks down before looking at Brainy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, you get the point. If it looks like Kara’s getting closer to Brainy every screenshot, it’s just cause the camera angle is shifting, by the way. Although, if you watch the clip, she is shifting her weight back and forth between her feet, throughtout this whole moment, which I didn’t notice until taking these screenshots, which is some very nice subtle acting from Benoist.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the first time Kara has seen Brainy when he’s emotionally vulnerable (onscreen, at least lol). She wasn’t there when he was rattled by the hatred he got when his image inducer didn’t work (Alex was there). She didn’t see him cry and didn’t hear him talking about his tears of logic (Lena was there). And when he just lost his ring, she wasn’t really there either (Nia was there). Anyway, she and the others are visibly unhappy when Brainy is unhappy. Even as part of a group shot it’s nice to see it, finally. It only lasts a little while anyway, because Brainy swiftly changes the subject.
It’s like an appetizer to the emotional main course we’re getting right after. For that moment when our beloved Brainy says -
El Mayarah - (IT’S GO TIME PEOPLE)
Tumblr media
“Ah...yes, it’s the march today...will you all be joining?” He finishes that sentence, looking at Kara. Because we know who he wants to go most.  Ahem *cough, cough*.
Tumblr media
@fairyroses pointed out that here, after J’onn has said he’ll be there and Brainy proceeds to say ‘Wonderful! ..Kara?’ That this might be the first time Brainy addresses Kara directly as ‘Kara’ when speaking to her. As in usually he’s like ‘Supergirl, we need to....’ etc. Which is strange considering we’ve been shown that he’s close enough to hang out and watch movies at the loft with her and Alex (pre-mind-wipe) but nope we haven’t had an onscreen ‘Kara’. I tried finding one to no avail. So this must be it, then.
Also, look at that raised eye-brow right here. He’s so excited, bless.
Tumblr media
‘Yes, I definitely think we should be there’ -
Tumblr media
‘HUZZAH’. -- Yep, Brainy is happy that they’re going. Look how excited he is.
Tumblr media
With the same energy from 4x01 where Kara says ‘nice work, Brainy’.
Tumblr media
Okay, again, look how happy Brainy is. And he’s just looking at Kara with that smile. My actual heart eeeek.
Tumblr media
And then his confusion when he realises that she didn’t mean that she was going to march with him. Complete confusion.
Tumblr media
‘Uh..’
Tumblr media
‘Kara...a..’ (SECOND KARA)
Tumblr media
‘A word’ He looks shook the whole time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He takes a while to actually start talking to her. He looks down again, back at her as if he’s about to start talking about then away again for a tiny moment. (also whoops got that screenshot mid when he’s licking his lips. Was an accident but...you’re welcome.) I wonder how many thought tracks he’s using to try and get the correct words to talk to Kara about this, because there seems to be some hesitation there.
Tumblr media
‘I think it would mean a lot to have Supegirl march today’ - So more obviously I think Brainy says that as a sense that the aliens attending would feel more strengthened by her marching, and of course that everyone could see who Supergirl stood with. But of course, I think he also means this, as in personally, since this is the march, that he organised.
Tumblr media
“I wish I could, Brainy, but I think it’s more important for me to patrol. In case anything gets out of hand.”
Kara’s genuinely sorry here, and that glint on her glasses makes her seem even more remorseful (yay angles), and I like how she makes it clear that she wants to support Brainy and the march, but is putting her duty to protect as Supergirl first.
Tumblr media
“They won’t. I am American Alien. Hash-tag, American Alien.”
So, Brainy didn’t feel the need to tell the others that he himself organised the march. I think he assumed they would all be up for going, without saying. He reveals this now, to reassure Kara that as the organiser, he would be able to keep things under control. I also like how confident he is here, with his ‘they won’t’.
Tumblr media
“You..you organised it?” - and now it’s Kara’s turn to be surprised.
Tumblr media
“When I lost my Legion ring, I realised how much I depended on it for strength and confidence. I thought it was what made me a hero.” Oooof there you go, there’s that vulnerability that Kara has not been shown to have seen before.  “But not having it these past few days made me see, it wasn’t the ring that gave me strength.
Tumblr media
“It was fighting.” *breathe* “alongside all of you.” - @kara-querl mentioned that she thinks that Brainy wanted to just ‘alongside you’ at first, but changed his mind. Which I could totally believe. But I also think he might be remembering fighting as a Legionnaire back home as well.
I think a reason why we didn’t see his realisation is that 1. well, airtime 2. He’s been showing that he gains strength from fighting alongside others over the past few episodes. That’s why he was so adamant on getting together a superhero team - trying to convince Nia to join them when the DEO fired Supergirl, and then being more eager about it after Alex’s mindwipe. Going to J’onn with money to try and get him to join their team. He wanted to gain their strength for Kara, but he also needed their strength too.
Tumblr media
“helping to make the Earth a better place.” Oof and look at Kara’s face. I think she’s getting just as emotional over this as we are. I also love how she just listens to Brainy. She doesn’t interrupt or even try to, which is excellent. Pefect communication skills.
“In times like this change won’t come from someone with a Ring, or a cape. It will only come when each one of us answers the call to stand up and be heard” Brainy is not asking for Supergirl, the symbol and is not going as Brainiac 5, the legionnaire. He wants them to go, purely as themselves.
Tumblr media
“El Mayarah” - OKAY CUE ME LOSING MY SH*T RIGHT HERE. especially after making that post about wanting inside codes/jokes in Kryptonian for them, I’M   He uses Kryptonian, trying to convince her and not any old plain Kryptonian but her god dang House of El family motto. This is not about just trying to convince Supergirl, this is trying to convince Kara Zor El.
Tumblr media
So Kara has been listening carefully and holding eye contact with Brainy this whole time (thank you), and when he says ‘El Mayarah’ she looks down immediately. How long has it been since she’s been specifically an El? A while. And even though she loves being Kara Danvers, and that’s who she is with Alex right now, Alex doesn’t know the Kara who she first met, the one she first met as Kara Zor El.
Tumblr media
“Stronger together.” I love love love how he reiterates this 1. cause lol I’m sure a lot of viewers forgot what it meant 2. He just says the meaning again in the language of Earth, the one sh’es adopted, calls home, and is trying to protect.
And here Brainy follows her eyeline when she looks down, coaxing it back up as he says ‘stronger together’. I’M SOFT.
Tumblr media
He takes another breath and breaks eye-contact and looks away. Yup, that was a lot. A lot of emotion right there. He needs a break. I need a break.  [we’re just about to hit screenshot 40 WOW I do need a break]
Tumblr media
I like how Kara’s still looking at him, nice. Thanks. Also Nia just streching in the background, not interuppting yet. Dad and Mum are having a Serious conversation, gotta keep busy and not make eye contact, duh.
Tumblr media
“Just because we’re superheroes, doesn’t mean we forget who we are.” - Beautiful. What a beautiful speech. Brainy always seems to be there to help remind Kara of what’s important. 3x10 - with her as Kara Danvers, and now 4x14 with her as Kara Zor El. He’s there to support her not only as the hero, Supergirl, but all sides of herself, all sides of Kara.
Tumblr media
She takes a breath here, and I think she’s definitely conflicted . She follows with a , I’m sorry Brainy...the risk is too great.”
Tumblr media
BRAINY DOES A LITTLE TINY SHAKE OF HIS HEAD. Like he has more eto say but is also still shocked. And then Nia says she’s ready.
Tumblr media
(OKAY YOU GUYS TOOK SO LONG. CAN WE GO PLAY PATROL NOW? PLEASEEE?)
Tumblr media
And here Brainy is still in disbelief and worried, like look at this face and oh my god  --- I took this screenshot and then just had to replay the clip - HE’S FIDDLING WITH HIS FINGER WHERE HIS LEGION RING USUALLY IS. THE THING HE DOES WHEN HE’s FEELING ANXIOUS. Lord help me, I’m done.
Tumblr media
“Supergirl may be a symbol...” -- ooof they look so pretty there.
Tumblr media
“but more importantly, she’s a citizen of Earth. Like the rest of us”. And he does this little shoulder raise at ‘like the rest of us’...my heart. He’s trying to appeal to her as people who both are not from Earth, but call Earth their home. [sidenote: ohoho ARE YOU EXILED FROM COLU, HUH BRAINY? IS THAT REBOOT BACKSTORY,  I HEAR? sorry, moving on]
Tumblr media
Another long pause before the “Remember that” --- ahhh he still looks so soft, end me.
Tumblr media
NOPE. NOW I’M DONEKARA’S FACE AS SHE WATCHES HIM LEAVE. SHE’S SHAKEN BY THE SPEECH AND I THINK SAD THAT SHE’S LETTING BRAINY DOWN. AND HERSELF DOWN AS A CITIZEN OF EARTH.
Phew. That was long. A long but beautiful secton. ALRIGHT. LET’S KEEP GOING, SHALL WE? LET’S HEAD OVER TO -
THE MARCH -- IT’S TIMEEE
Tumblr media
“They’re not like you - you’re a superhero.” --- I’m starting here because I think it’s important that he doesn’t say ‘you’re Supergirl’ he says ‘you’re a superhero’, because Brainy’s whole speech’s bottom line was  “Just because we’re superheroes, doesn’t mean we forget who we are.” That they’re not just superheroes.
Tumblr media
And I think here, she fully understands what Brainy meant.
Tumblr media
“No, you’re wrong, I am just like them.” --- so in otherwords, she’s a superhero but more importantly she’s a Citizen of Earth, just like them. This episode is not just great for karadox but great for Kara’s character development because her identity as Supergirl was so at stake, that she’s put that above all else and now she remembers what she needs to be doing. I’M SO PROUD. Rip rewatching this part made me a bit teary wow what is this. KARA I LOVE YOU.
Tumblr media
Hmm...is Brainy the first one to look up? MAYBE SO. im not sure but shh
Tumblr media
THERE SHE ISSS. SHE.
Tumblr media
Everyone’s in awe. Also, Brainy’s fingers are steepled here, when they weren’t before. (Excitement? Perhaps? idk, hm)
Tumblr media
AWE I SAY. AWE.
Tumblr media
“Supergirl.” HE’S HAPPY. LOOK AT THAT. LOOK AT HIM. AHHHH.
Tumblr media
“It’s Kara Zor-El.” KARA ZOR EL OF THE HOUSE OF EL. WITH HER GOD DANG ROBES. ‘ In times like this change won’t come from someone with a Ring, or a cape.’ -- SO SHE CAME AS HERSELF.
Tumblr media
“Citizen of Earth” - Just to reiterate -- ‘ more importantly she’s a Citizen of Earth’. She says this. While maintaining eye contact with Brainy the whole time she lands and joins the march. His speech helped her make this decision directly, and she’s letting him know that it did. Her smile in this screenshot and the one above. HER SMILE. BLESS KARA.
Tumblr media
And now J’onn says ‘nice to have you with us’ - and they automatically hold hands. Oof and my heart, Papa J’onn. The father figure we all deserve. And...ohhhhH...hmm see Brainy is still holding his hands in position and maybe they made him do that...
Tumblr media
To make it clear that it wasn’t automatic. So that Kara has to offer her his hand. Look at her smile. He’s still just looking straight at her. ALSO LOL J’ONN IS LOOKING. HE SEES.
Tumblr media
AHAHA LOOK AT BRAINY JUST STARING DOWN. ‘oh yes, I should...hold the hand’. And kara’s smile like ‘yes, yes, it’s okay’. AND LOOK J’ONN IS SMILING AGAIN AHA.  He  ships it is proud too. hmm I wonder if J’onn was secretly listening to their convo the whole time...or hm maybe Brainy voiced how he felt that Kara wasn’t coming to the march to J’onn before it started.  I gots to know
Tumblr media
THERE
Tumblr media
IT
Tumblr media
IS.
alksdjaslkjdalsjdlaskdjlaksjd
wow wow wow wow wow
STRONGER TOGETHER INDEED.
1. the alien march is stronger together
2. MY SHIP IS SO STRONGER TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER TO BE THEIR BEST SELVES.
Brainy takes his hand and Kara tightens the hold on it. THANK YOu. THANK YOU.
See, the reason they gave this close up, I think,  is to
1.  reaffirm the themes of togetherness in this episode
2. FEED ME THAT GOOD KARADOX FOOD THAT I ORDERED.
Tumblr media
Kara is just taking a breath here but lol I still laugh at how much it looks like the Distracted Boyfriend meme.
Tumblr media
“Thank you.” *turns to Kara* “Both”. So much direct eye contact this episode.
Tumblr media
THIS IS THE PUREST OF SMILES. KARA. SMILING AT BRAINY THANKING HER. WHO IS HAPPY TO BE HERE TOGETHER IN THE MARCH. PURE. MY SHIP IS PURE.
Tumblr media
And you can’t see it well, or much at all, until she turns but he was smiling too, even if it’s not that clear.
And off they go, to confront Lockwood at -
The Rally
Tumblr media
A bottle is thrown over their heads.
Tumblr media
“Stay peaceful! - Brainy. Kara is shaken, by the looks of it. And Brainy just instinctively holds his hand out to Kara this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Takes a moment after he holds her hand...then...
Tumblr media
“Don’t stoop to his level.” - again, supporting each other. He takes her hand this time.
BLESS THIS EPISODE.
Tumblr media
So here they’re looking at the people who were here supporting Lockwood and I love how Brainy just looks them straight on. Kara’s also maintaining eye contact in the face of aggression.
The Fight
Tumblr media
“Hologram!”
Tumblr media
“Then where’s the real Manchester?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so I just like how they can switch so quickly to get into the fight. Superhero mode starts exactly now. And just look how smoothly they go about it. I love them.
Tumblr media
So here, she says she’s gonna go find Hat.
Tumblr media
“Hello, Hat, we meet again.”
*insert fightscene that you can see giffed by @fairyroses here http://fairyroses.tumblr.com/post/183443782018*
Tumblr media
“You don’t need a ring, when you have friends.” Throwback to how he gets his strength from fighting alongside the team.
Tumblr media
“So where are your friends now?” - jinxed yourself, mate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kara literally is only a blur in this scene. And lmao Brainy catches the hat, which I did not realise till I saw the gifset. I’ve included @fairyroses tags here because she says it all and I literally can’t take any credit for noticing this lol. Bless you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Nice work, Brainy.” - I am fed well with all the times she has said Brainy today. Compliments today too.
Tumblr media
“Now get him to the DEO.” - LOOKING GOOD BRAINY.
Tumblr media
“Then help me get as many of these people to safety as you can.” Menagerie was brought in my the team sans Brainy, and now Brainy and Kara are taking down Hat together. I like how she says then help me. Just another confirmation of yes, you are on my team, even if you’re going back to the DEO for a tiny bit for the delivery. Again, stronger together.
Tumblr media
“And this was from the time me and your mum took down a villain named Hat together” - is not something that was said, but is going in my future headcanon, thanks.
And yep, that’s the beautoful end of the karadox interactions of this episode, time that I start -
Wrapping it Up
Shh, yes I have more to say, bear with me.
Tumblr media
“I know that Supergirl and I have not been on the same page lately, but you know, seeing her out there in that march, hand in hand with everybody else,I was inspired.” - so  ‘I think it would mean a lot to have Supegirl march today’  ---- Turns out it also meant inspiring Alex to take action too. Brainy’s speech being the root of convincing Kara and Kara taking that stand. directly inspired by Brainy grabbing Kara’s hand that second time, kthx
Tumblr media
“Yeah.” - Kara agrees, and then makes a funny joke about roughing Ben lockwood up lol. She did tho.
Tumblr media
“No, *laughs* no, you know I followed my beliefs, not the rules..and it felt really good to take a moral stance.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, I think everyone at the march felt that way.” - Kara was glad to have gone to the march and she felt better for it. Oof look at that smile. Look at how good she thought the march was.
Tumblr media
“It just goes to show to show, no matter who you are. Alien, human, superhero. Every action counts. And every voice matters.” ---- again, throwing back to Brainy’s speech.
“In times like this change won’t come from someone with a Ring, or a cape.  It will only come when each one of us answers the call to stand up and be heard”.
So everything ties together nicely, in -
THE END
Thanks for bearing with me, which I assume you have if you’re all the way down here.
To summarise:
Brainy and Kara make an excellent team and they both are each others’ strengths, and help each other grow. They are stronger together.
