I've been thinking after a conversation with @guraiuna how everyone describes Childe as unpredictable.

And... yes, technically he is unpredictable. In the sense that human mind cannot conceive the shit this guy comes up with.

But also in every single interaction he *explains* what to expect of him. He states his goals, in which capacity he is currently here (personal/professional) and what he is going to do about that.

Even when you are a complete stranger and an enemy he is currently trying to trick, he still does it, just in the form of a hint.

He does it in the Golden House before the duel and before summoning Osial, he does it in Labyrinth Warriors, he does it with the treasure hoarders in Liyue and those thugs who threatened the blacksmith in Fontaine. He does it with Neuvilette (who then proceeds to assume the boy is just making fun of the court).

I wonder if it's because he views everything as a game or a duel and it makes sense to let the opponent know the rules. It's not fun to cheat (he's also confident in his ability to win).

He is extremely straightforward if you listen to him. I rarely see people who announce boundaries and intentions this clearly.

Does anyone ever take that seriously? N o p e. And somehow he's the crazy and unpredictable one. I can't with you all.

(to be honest, I do that too. I've spent so much time thinking the first encounter in Fontaine was a trick of some sort)

i need to actually remember for my writing that my main hc for why Childe is Like That is that he saw something real and true just once in his life and has been chasing that high ever since despite it being a massively traumatizing experience

oh my fucking god i feel. SO stupid rn at How i didnt make the (super sane very normal just absolutely. Yes. Surely) connection earlier but uhh

so anyway im now like 89% certain that whatever the "traces" of the narwhal that remain on ajax and facilitate their (ever-growing) innate connection are like. an actually fundamental aspect of it (them?) more or less.

why? because if you consider its pov just for a moment. the narwhal was literally about to depart teyvat for good. it had nearly finished consuming the primordial sea and preparing to breach surface to finish the job by eating the french for the leftovers their human bodies were made from. its an interstellar voyager it does not linger on planets it devours. it goes glug glug and it leaves.

and like if it wasnt for traveler intervening its confirmed through narzissenkreuz and renes world formula that teyvat wouldve just been destroyed. no one could have stopped the narwhal not neuvillette not focalors not anyone.

so what was the one other thing it did right before going for that french brunch? calling for ajax. getting them reunited in the primordial sea. like all the possible implications aside bc theres many different ways to speculate on the exact reasons why and the nature of that link. the point remains.

it wasnt leaving teyvat without finding him.

like the narwhal is about to fucking Dip from this cringe planet and whatever part of it that ajax carries within himself his narwhal Absolutely wanted to be reunited with. what the fuck am i supposed to read from that. hoyo???????!??! answers?!?!?!

and its not only the calling from the narwhal side itself either bc this is ALL coinciding with the growth of a 'restless power' within ajax and his vision malfunctioning (the things celestia is literally confirmed to harvest energy thru to repair its damaged authority) and his connection with the narwhal reaching an actual conscious level (arguably subconscious n emotional too bc i find it Curious his mood is poor right as the narwhal is repeatedly described as positively malding to the point its boss fight mechanic is literally a rage meter). ajax' power is growing. his destiny is starting to shift and something is drawing him to fontaine... right as the narwhal is getting close to finished with the primordial sea. funny how it overlaps eh. how it aligns 🤨🤨 why are they orbiting each other like this (they should kiss)

(& not to even Mention how ajax just Happened to get that absolutely exponential and borderline unbelievable feat of power spike in extending his foul legacy endurance as massively as he did. while. within the primordial sea. with his narwhal. who had at that point all but incorporated the power of that sea into itself. i s2g if childe was getting passive home turf co-op bonus exp with a 4x multiplier automatically the whole 40+ days 💀💀)

And not like Yandere protective I mean like if you get hurt he needs names that’s what I personally feel like would happen in both forms be it Ajax or our lovely abyss moth man (do with this what you want and btw I love your FL fics and head cannons it’s adorable like Our moth man is🥹)

oh both Ajax and Foul Legacy are SO protective, even more so when you get hurt

if it was an accident, like you tripping or bumping into something, Foul Legacy whimpers and whines and nudges you until you sit down, gently prodding the injured area and clicking anxiously when you let out a hiss of pain. he's not letting you go anywhere today, nowhere at all! you're staying home to recover and that's final. he pulls you onto his lap and holds you gently, cooing softly as one hand pets your hair and the other wraps around your wrist, his claws lacing with your fingers. when Legacy falls asleep Ajax takes over, placing careful kisses on your cheeks and murmuring soft, comforting words- he knows how painful it is; pain is part of his life; and he hates to see you suffer so

but if someone intentionally hurt you? names, location, looks- Ajax and Legacy want all the info. Legacy almost breaks when he sees the pinched look of pain on your face, memories of fighting in the Abyss creeping back up in his mind like infected tendrils, but he keeps his rage sealed away to avoid scaring you. he and Ajax pamper you for the day, changing your bandages and soothing you to sleep for the night. Ajax stays for a few moments to make sure you're not having any nightmares, then his eyes darken further until they're almost black as Foul Legacy lets out a low hiss in his mind, fingers sharpening into wicked claws. a cruel grin spreads across Ajax's face- he's more than willing to let Foul Legacy take the reins, seeing how his Abyssal half would love nothing more than to sink his teeth into the horrid person who hurt you and tear them limb from limb
