Part 2

You sat on the edge of the couch, textbook open on your lap, but your attention was decidedly not on the words. Instead, your gaze was fixed on Kaveh, who was sitting at the dining table, his messy sketchbooks and architectural plans spread out around him like the aftermath of a storm. He was fully engrossed, his blond hair falling into his eyes as he leaned over a drawing with that intense, focused look you’d come to adore.

For a moment, you just watched him. His hand moved in practiced strokes, a small smile appearing every so often, as if he was admiring his own work. You didn’t blame him; everything he created was beautiful, a reflection of the way he saw the world. You loved watching his passion, how he became so absorbed in it. Maybe one day, you'd tell him how he looked like an artwork himself, surrounded by ideas that only he could bring to life. For now, though, you’d just stare across the room, hoping he wouldn’t notice the soft, lovesick expression you probably wore.

Unfortunately, someone did notice.

"You're staring again," came a low, matter-of-fact voice from beside you.

You jumped, realizing that Alhaitham had somehow materialized in the living room without you noticing. His usual unreadable expression was tinged with a faint smirk, like he was privy to some secret.

"I—uh—what?" you stammered, trying to act casual as you quickly turned back to your textbook. "I was just...thinking. About, uh, architecture! Yeah. Architecture is...fascinating."

Alhaitham didn’t look convinced. He simply raised an eyebrow, glanced over at Kaveh, who was still oblivious, and then back at you. "You know, you could just tell him," he said bluntly. "Your crush on him isn’t exactly subtle."

Heat flooded your face. "Whaaa? Pffft, nooo, I don’t...I don’t see him like that," you protested, sounding embarrassingly unconvincing even to yourself. "I just...he’s an inspiring person. A friend (okay Adrien-). I admire his...dedication and stuff."

Alhaitham stared at you, unimpressed. "I see," he replied, deadpan. "Admiration. Is that why you’ve been looking at him like he’s the best thing you’ve ever seen for the past six months?"

You buried your face in your hands. "Alhaitham, please, don’t spill the beans..." you whispered, mortified. If Kaveh found out...you didn’t even want to think about it. You were sure he’d laugh it off or worse, get awkward about it. The thought alone was enough to make you want to disappear.

Alhaitham sighed, sitting down next to you. "You know, you might be surprised. Kaveh isn’t as dense as you think," he said, voice softening just a little. "You’re giving him too little credit. Besides, the worst he’ll do is make an emotional speech about unrequited love and how tragic it is."

You could almost imagine it. Kaveh, in all his dramatic glory, would probably get poetic about it, turn it into some grand tale of forbidden romance. You chuckled, even as the nerves twisted your stomach.

But then Kaveh’s voice broke through your thoughts. “Hey, what’s so funny?”

You looked up, startled to see him looking at you, curiosity lighting up his bright red eyes. The blush that had only barely started to fade returned with a vengeance. "Oh! Uh...just something silly." you mumbled, trying desperately to avoid Alhaitham’s knowing gaze.

Kaveh chuckled, his attention back on his sketches. “Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one around here with a sense of humor. Alhaitham is no fun.”

“Thank you.” Alhaitham said dryly, glancing at you with a small smile.

You spent the rest of the evening nervously trying to play it cool, but every so often, Alhaitham’s words would echo in your mind, making your heart beat just a little faster. Maybe one day, you’d find the courage to tell Kaveh how you really felt. For now, though, you were content to stay right here, as his silent, hopeless admirer.

Drunken Shenanigans (with the Roommate AU)

Imagine you, Alhaitham and Kaveh went out for a Tavern night and ended up getting utterly wasted.

It all started over a game of cards with Kaveh betting he could beat Alhaitham when it came to drinking (spoiler: he did not, he was the first to get drunk). And you were in on it too and went ahead and ordered some wine and other alcoholic beverages.

One bottle in and Kaveh was lying on the table already, visibly drunk with pink cheeks and a slurred speech, while Alhaitham and you were still going strong. Although you were beginning to feel a little fuzzy, too. And while Alhaitham would emerge "victorious" in this drinking battle, you all would end up equally wasted by the end of the evening.

Fast forward to all of you walking back home together and somehow the guys start fighting over you in their intoxicated states. This causes them to have no filter whatsoever and they end up confessing their love for you simultaneously in a very slurred and drunken way (and also start a fight over that).

"I see how you look at me, hmmm... come on, admit it." "*hic* Admit what?" "That you like me." "You are absolutely blind and stupid *hic* on top of that, too. They like me." Neuvillette was not one for common social norms.

No… they spent most of their time alone, in their room, surrounded by their favorite books. That’s all they ever needed to feel happy and fulfilled.

Their life after becoming a NEET had been a solemn one. When you don’t leave your house for so long, you end up losing the friends you once held close so dearly. With no way to connect, how could they understand the anguish of being so alone?

Neuvillette had always been an outsider. Though it wasn’t until a couple years ago, had they completely surrendered to their fate as a NEET.

Now they were an outsider… and alone, to their core.

The only person who still remained in their life was their roommate, Furina.

Furina was a scientist by nature and by profession, and loyal to a fault. When everyone else in the pair’s life had moved on to bigger, greater things, Furina would always be by Neuvillette’s side, coming her fingers through their waist-length silver hair, and singing them sweet nothings as they cried.

Ah, yes, the tears… Being completely alone leads to significant anguish, wouldn’t you say?

Furina knew she had to help Neuvillette. The problem is, she had to figure out what was wrong in the first place. 

It was a cold morning, near the beginning of winter. An alarm clock blared in a room with walls painted a sugary pink, with posters of characters plastering the walls, and bookshelves overrun with favorite series cramped into the small space. 

In one corner of the room was a bed. An arm reached out from under the thick, winter comforter and groped for the alarm clock.

Finally, it shut off. 

Peering out from the blankets was a grimacing face. 

“ Ugh… it’s already noon…”

Neuvillette paused. Something was… off.

“Has my—”

“Is my voice… deeper…??”

They reached for their phone. The dark screen reflected back their face, only…

Well, it’s kind of hard to say looking into a dark phone screen. 

Neuvillette got out of bed, noticing their oversized t-shirt hung slightly differently on their small frame than usual. They shrugged it off, and walked to the bathroom.

The mirror. It was… wrong. 

It had to be. 

No way… No way was Neuvillette looking in the mirror and seeing short hair… a flat chest… and a masculine face staring back at them…!!

They gripped the edge of the sink so hard their knuckles turned white. 

Neuvillette glanced down at their loosely-fitting blue and white striped shorts. 

“I have to…” They choked out, their mind dancing on the verge of completely flipping out. “...for… for science… ”

Hooking their thumbs in the waistband, they slowly lowered both layers…

“Neuvillette~! Are you up?” A cheerful voice sang from outside the door.

“Furina– I– Something’s— OW!!” They shouted, hitting their head on the sink from bending over.

“Sorry– hold on…” They came out of the bathroom, their arms awkwardly crossed in front of their chest, and their head ducked slightly in embarrassment.

Furina tapped her chin thoughtfully. “I see… I see…”

“Well, it didn’t make you as tall as I thought it would… But everything else is there!” “H-huh?! You mean… YOU did this, Furina?!”

She nodded. “Just slipped a little of the medicine in your water last night, tee-hee~!”

Neuvillette dragged a hand down their face exasperatedly. 

“Furina… you can’t just use the people in your life as guinea pigs… What kind of girl do you take me for, anyway?!”

“Well, Neuvillette, you can choose to identify however you’d like, but …” Furina gestured to her roommate’s disheveled, yet newly masculine appearance, “ you’re not exactly a girl anymore … literally speaking.”

The shorter male sighed tiredly, leaning back against the wall, their bluntly-cut silver hair tangling slightly as they slid downwards towards the floor.

“Well…” Furina smiled gently, crouching down to Neuvillette’s curled-up height. “When you’re feeling better, there’s somewhere I want to take you, Neuvi.”

“What kind of somewhere…?”

“A… shopping mall? Furina, are you crazy?!”

“No, I am not! Your new appearance naturally requires new clothes! And I’m tired of seeing you in that old baggy t-shirt. You deserve to wear something nice that looks just as cute as you do! Think of what a show-stopper you’d be with the right assortment of clothes,”

Furina gestured to the pair’s reflection in a window display. Neuvillette blushed, reaching up to hide their face with their hands, but Furina grabbed them by the wrists. 

“No more hiding, Neuvi. It’s time to take that first step out into the real world! And I promise, it’ll be worth it.” Her smile was unavoidable, her gaze piercing straight into Neuvillette’s heart. They couldn’t help but blush furiously at their friend’s words. 

“Now, come on! The stage of life awaits!” Intertwining her fingers with theirs, she led them into the shopping mall confidently, smiling all the way.

“Ah, my favorite store’s over here!”

They had arrived at a medium-sized boutique, the name written out in a classy script on the awning over the door: “ Fontaine Belle-Eau.”

“How do I even pronounce tha–”

“Look, Neuvi! Isn’t this the most perfect outfit ever for you?” Furina cried, yanking Neuvillette indoors to look at a display mannequin. 

The mannequin was wearing a white blouse with long, billowing sleeves that ended in ruffles, paired with navy blue shorts, and a matching cape over the shoulders that had a glittering aqua-colored design. The whole thing was tied together with a white flouncy neck ribbon that faded to blue at the tips, with a bright, piercing ocean-colored teardrop-shaped brooch in the center.

Neuvillette stared at the outfit, their eyes wide as they took in all the fine details. 

“It’s beautiful…” They finally managed to choke out, “but much too fancy for everyday wear. I couldn’t possibly see myself wearing it anywhere.”

Furina tapped her chin, a slight hint of a mischievous smile on her lips. 

“Can I help you two find something?” A voice spoke behind them.

Furina whirled around, dragging Neuvillette with her as their hands were still intertwined.

“Yes, indeed you can! My… uh, friend here is looking for some more masculine fashion!”

“Certainly. I can hold whatever you like in a fitting room for you.” “Great, thank you so much!” Furina beamed. Neuvillette scratched the side of their face awkwardly, refusing to make eye contact.

“Anything for such an adorable new couple,” The saleswoman smiled amusedly.

Her words hung in the air for a moment to Neuvillette. As Furina giggled happily, Neuvillette began to panic.

“W-wait, we’re not—!!” 

“I’ll let you two have some time to browse our selection. What name should I put on the dressing room?”

“Neuvillette,” Furina smiled proudly.

“Furina—!!”

“Just let me know whenever you find something you like,”

“Furina, are you listening to me—!!!” “Thank you so much!”

“FURINA—!!!”

Trying on the clothes went fairly easily, since Furina picked most of the items out. There were a few here and there that Neuvillette liked on their own, too, though.

There was an outfit that consisted of black shorts, a white ruffle-collared blouse, and a sweater with thick baby blue and white stripes that Neuvillette liked quite a bit.

“Isn’t it nice not having to wear a binder?” Furina smiled from the bench she sat on outside the dressing rooms as Neuvillette examined themself in their blue-and-white-striped outfit from every angle in the mirror.

“H-how did you know about my binder?!”

“Laundry,”

“ ...Oh… ”

“Anyway, Neuvi, there’s one more outfit I want you to try on, just for fun!”

Neuvillette hesitantly walked over to where Furina sat. Folded in her lap was the outfit the mannequin wore, accompanied by her own sheepish smile.

“Just try it on, would you?”

Neuvillette rolled their eyes, scratching their face anxiously. “Sigh… fine . I guess it doesn’t hurt to just try it.”

They gingerly took the outfit in their small hands, and disappeared into the dressing room to put it on.

“How’s your boyfriend liking the clothes?” The saleswoman asked Furina from her desk nearby.

“Ahaha…!” Furina waved her hand sheepishly in front of her face. “He likes them!” She smiled as her gaze lay softly upon the dressing room door. “He likes them a lot.”

A few more minutes passed as Furina made idle talk with the sales attendant, until finally, Neuvillette called out, “I think I might’ve put this on wrong, but I’m going to come out anyway. Okay, Furina?”

“Okay.”

After wrestling with the latch on the door, they stumbled out, their motions stiff with anxiety.

“Look at you…!” Furina’s eyes sparkled with joy. “You look perfect, Neuvi.”

And they did. Not only that, but they actually felt perfect, too, which could be corroborated by the wide, wobbly, cheesy smile plastered across their face, that they were currently trying to hide.

“Neuvi…” Furina stood, walking over to them. She ran her fingers through their bangs, then over the capelet that hugged their shoulders, feeling the texture of the glittery fabric on her skin. Her eyes met Neuvillette’s, and their gaze that had once been so filled with constant anguish and anxiety was now noticeably… lighter. 

Neuvillette stepped closer, pressing their face into her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around them with no hesitation.

That’s when Furina noticed… her blouse felt… wet .

“Neuvi, are you crying?” She whispered.

“I-I’m sorry…” They choked out between gasps. They hugged Furina tightly, secretly terrified that she might let go.

“I-I’m just now realizing… that you saved my life, Furina…”

Furina smiled, petting the back of their head gently. 

“I hated life so much… A-a-and I felt like… like I could never do what everyone else my age was doing… like it was too late… a-and I didn’t even know where to s-start…”

“B-but now… it’s like… like all of my problems are just… g-gone!”

“I’m sorry… B-but, thank you … but I’m s-sorry…”

Furina felt tears welling up in her eyes as well, and she smiled a smile so full of love for her dearest friend.

“There’s no need to be sorry, Neuvillette. You’re just existing, in the only way you know how.”

They nodded shakily into her shoulder. 

It took Furina a little while to get Neuvillette completely calmed down. But once they weren’t actively crying anymore, the pair paid for all the clothes they bought (including the fancy ouji coord!) , and headed home. 

The sun was setting as they walked home, and though Neuvillette’s eyes were puffy and red, they felt… good. Like they had a newfound hope. 

“So… did you have a good first day as a man? Or, um… what do you want me to call you, pronoun-wise, from now on…?” Furina smiled sheepishly once more.

Neuvillette stopped in their tracks, in the middle of a bridge that went over a river.

“Hmm… I haven’t really thought about that…”

Furina walked back, stopping next to them. She dropped her two giant shopping bags on the ground, and Neuvillette followed suit.

“Well, I gotta admit, I kinda liked it when you called me “he” to the shop attendees earlier…”

Furina’s face went pink, remembering the conversation vividly.

“Y-you heard that?!”

“Well, of course I did. I was in the same room as you, you know.”

“Do you…” She cleared her throat, “Do you remember what we were talking about?”

“Of course I do. Every. Last. Word. My darling~” Neuvillette giggled maniacally.

“N-nooooo!! I never… I didn’t…”

Neuvillette grinned, taking Furina’s hand in theirs and lifting it to their lips, giving her a small but serious kiss on the knuckles, to which Furina turned bright red.

Ah, the days of whimsy and youthfulness were truly all for Neuvillette from now on. No more lying around until noon every day… The days of a NEET were really over.

C’est la vie!

Neuvillette awoke the next morning to find a note and a box wrapped with a royal blue ribbon on their bedside table.

The note read: 

“Dear Neuvi–

Whatever you decide to be any day, they/them or he/him— this will look great on you!

Your darling roommate”

Inside the box was a set of shiny gold metal hair clips, one big and one small, both shaped similarly to a fleur de lis. The big one had an additional glittery blue feather-shaped piece of fabric coming out of the top.

Neuvillette never told Furina straight-out how much they loved them, but they wore them every day afterwards, to the point where Furina would know something was wrong if they weren’t wearing them. 

All in all, it’s the simple things we do for each other that show the most love, is it not?

A/N : I actually speedran this in like, a week and a half right as I was starting my second year at uni, because I spent 2 months planning everything. "This time I'm not getting overwhelmed" –famous last words. Title is from the song "往業支離" – "Past Karma", I believe. It's an original Honkai Star Rail song for Blade, and it's an absolute banger.

So one of my friends is really into history, lore, and Stuff and told me that a dude named Dr. Irving Finkel translates stuff from sumerian and he's, like, the one who learned that the Epic of Gilgamesh was like homework for scribes-in-training with said trainee scribes being, as I like to describe, 2-18-years-old rich kids. Bestie then proceeded to yeet me the mental imagery of some young noble child scribe writing GilKidu fan fiction instead of their homework [which, mood you scenario-noble child] which leads me to THIS crack shot of an idea being born when I said to them:

"Imagine one of the best scribes in the Modern Era was a 2 year old girl and the only reason she's considered the best because she lost her homework and that's the only reason why a Significant Part of The Story of Gilgamesh still exists."

Which lead me to conclude that "I can fanfic this." So really this AU (kinda) started because of bestie and because they like Kaveh and Deshret and Kaveh as Deshret, I decided to call this one The Epic of Deshret AU (shortened name) [full name of this AU would probably be Ancient Ship Fiction Survives AU]. (Below is basically copy pasting what I told them while I was running on AU juice)

Epic of Gilgamesh AU in Genshin but replace Gil and Enkidu with King Deshret and Nabu Malikata-- but its modern au with Haikaveh/Kavetham being Scribe and Archeologist respectively and they just uncovered a new site that contains ancient text that seems to hold new information about the Epic of King Deshret-- except that's not really the main plot.

So first scene is haikaveh uncovering the text and it like freezes to black and white, focusing on the Ancient text they're holding with some background dialouge going like "so you're probably wondering how I got here" with the voiceover being Nahida. Now flashback to an ancient time where The Era of King Deshret has passed but their stories told are still (kinda) accurate-- newly inducted scribe Nahida (5 years old), daughter of the late Lady Rukkadevata, has decided that she want to write about The Definitely True and Hidden Love Story of King Deshret and His Goddess of Flower Nabu Malikata that she discovered from her Late Mother's hidden books. There starts the tale of a grand adventure starting her escape from her definitely-not-power-hungry uncle Azar who definitely did not kill Rukka to going on a journey where she meets many people, asking them about what Hidden Details they could possibly know about King Deshret and Nabu Malikata to make her Definitely Hidden True Love Story more accurate.

So like the thing is that the story Nahida finds from her mom's hidden stuff is a What-If fanfiction if Nabu Malikata lived and they went on their way to Love and Procreate. Yeah she definitely still died as lore accurate to her Epic of Gilgamesh counterpart Enkidu.

Childe, the original owner of the house

Diluc (specifically teyvat turboflux au who's friends with Ningguang), who Childe only let move in because he was Down Bad. regrets it, because Race Car Diluc is probably a pain to live with.

Navia, the lesbian who Diluc forced Childe to let move in and is the only one who actually pays rent

and Kokichi, who just. showed up one day and kind of went "mhm i live here now and it's all your problem."

Phantom thief Haikaveh AU.

Kaveh is a phantom thief who loves his dramatics and stealing from rich people. Is still hella in debt cause he gives away everything like the most sopping wet rag version of Robin Hood. Uses mad architecture knowledge to evaluate buildings. His arch nemesis? Detective Alhaitham.

Meanwhile, Dectective Alhaitham is a bored detective who will not be working overtime on this new thief case, thank you very much. Accidentally keeps foiling Kaveh's heists by running into him and Kaveh can't keep himself from arguing with him and getting caught by all the yelling. Hmm? Archnemesis? He has no time for such a ridiculous notion, besides, Kaveh practically catches himself, Alhaitham would much rather spend the time reading a good book.

And Kaveh so would! He's essentially building a pharmacy by your bedside and bringing you fresh tea every now and then. Heck, he'd probably even carry you to the bathroom and wash your hair for you while you soak in warm bath water when you are unable to do so. 10/10 - Kaveh is the King of pampering you.

I could imagine Alhaitham scrunching his nose when he sees Kaveh make soup in the kitchen as well (we all know how much he hates soup).

Secretly Alhaitham wishes he would've taken the initiative to care for you first though. So from this point onward expect double the amount of tea or... literally anything else. Kaveh goes out to buy all sorts of vitamin shots and immune boosters while Alhaitham goes out to get some dried herbs for medicinal tea from Tighnari (poor guy always ends up helping one of the guys because of you...). You may even see Alhaitham prepare soup for you (insane, I know - that alone shows that you're important to him). Alhaitham would even voluntarily read this tacky romance novel you've been reading to you because he knows you're too weak to do so by yourself.

Kaveh would totally be the 'there there, rest up and sleep, yell if you need anything' type of guy.

In the meantime, Alhaitham would be the 'did you drink enough yet? make sure to take your meds. Sleep is more important than ever when you're sick. According to your symptoms, you should-' type of guy (he really means well but when you're sick you really cannot deal with smartassery... although admittedly there is a lovely side to it too)
