NAHIDA HAS NO REASON TO BE WHITE. heres WHY
the reason why i'm making this post is because i am SICK and TIRED of seeing OTHER PEOPLE fight for MY CULTURE in the most INCORRECT WAY POSSIBLE. "nahida rcta queen!", "why are you blackwashing her?", "she switched teams!" all these comments and more under artists' posts that decided to give her melanin.
artists are just giving back her melanin as she is based off a culture with people who have dark skin. this is not racist. this is literally the opposite. i understand if a character already has an established skin colour that's apart of their character (ex. ei or zhongli) though with nahida this makes no sense.
i am indian, do NOT come after me. sumeru is based off of MY culture. i know what i'm talking about. a good 70% of sumeru is based off hindu culture, it's based off south asia.
more of my yapping:
Tumblr media
you all need to shut the hell up about saraswati and how nahida is based off saraswati because saraswati's description is saying "shes as white as the moon" and nahida is white. you ALL need to BE QUIET ABOUT THAT.
this is saraswati, for reference:
Tumblr media
saraswati is not ever mentioned in genshin impact. NOT ONCE. but, the aranara call rukkhadevata queen aranyani. aranyani is a very obscure hindu god known for taking care of the forest and dancing n stuff
Tumblr media
THIS IS WHAT NAHIDA AND RUKKHADEVATA ARE BASED OFF OF. NOT SARASWATI. the only thing that saraswati and nahida (+ rukkha) have in-common is that other than being white and based off a hindu goddess
saraswati isn't even white, the pale as the moon thing refers to a godly glow. so even IF nahida and rukkha are based off saraswati, hoyo does NOT HAVE ANY REASON TO MAKE THEM WHITE SINCE SHE ISNT EVEN WHITE. she has a GODLY GLOW.
literally the only excuse nahida has for being that pale is that she's the avatar of irminsul (a white tree) HOWEVER. they didn't need to make her THAT pale. if they wanted to make her pale skin they should've added more colors like pinks and purples and blues like the actual irminsul
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as you can VERY CLEARLY see, they did not do that. they did not even try to take this route.
everything could have been fine if they did take this route or make her eyelashes white and say she's albino if they really wanted her to be white. but they didn't.
indians can be pale, YES. but they aren't this paper caca toothpaste looking ass WHITE like how nahida is. REPRESENTATION FOR SKIN COLOUR MATTERS TOO. ITS NOT JUST THE CULTURE THEY'RE BASED OFF OF.
anyway thanks for coming to my yapping session. i love talking about my culture 👍 desi nahida layouts are here if you want to see :)

The Caged Bird and the Chased Mouse
Chapter 1: The Bird Gains Company
What happens to a poor isekai’d player when they forgot to play the Sumeru Main Quests before being transported into the wonderful world of Tevyat, only to be chased down for being a supposed ‘Imposter’? Well they end up in Sumeru with next to no idea of what’s to come next or what to expect and ends up with youngest of the Archons.
A/N: woah you guys seemed to like the,,, lets call it the prologue,, despite me not being a huge writer ehe! That prologue got more than most of my art (which you should check out heheh self-promotion) BTW: Nahida isnt a yandere, it might come off as so, its not supposed to. No matter how old she may be in canon she looks like a baby and is my baby that I will protect.
No warnings this part!
Nahida was surprised when she saw someone who wasn’t a Sage or related coming into the sanctuary.
Before the mysterious person came in she was simply taking a nap to escape her true reality of being contained in her prison, not expecting anyone to come through that day as the sages were needed elsewhere for what they seemed to be planning. The creak of the door woke her from her soft slumber to look at the commotion, it was a figure dressed in a dark cloak that covered almost everything but their footwear. It looked like they were in a rush and exhausted, gasping for air as they pushed their whole body against the door to close it as soon as possible. Then came what Nahida assumed was the guards trying to get in but didn’t seem to be able to get through.
The person turned around and looked up, locking eyes with Nahida. She was taken aback with how… Familiar, the person was, as if she knew them already, similar to have she felt when thinking of Rukkadevata. Nahida was unwilling to break eye contact, as if she broke it they would disappear.
They slowly made their way to the middle, apprehensive but concerned. When they got to the middle they climbed over the flower structure and stood up, reaching their hand up to Nahida. She took a second to understand but eventually pressed her own small hand to the floor of the cage, even thought they couldn’t touch each other because of the height and the prison, they both felt comforted by the gesture.
They lowered their arm and started to lower their whole body to sit down. Once sat down they stretched and laid down despite the odd shape of the flower. Nahida kept her hand on the floor, and watched them.
She knew whatever was keeping the door closed wasn’t going to last, and she didn’t want you to be taken away and likely imprisoned, like her…
Nahida whispered to your exhausted body “Everything will be okay, I’ll make sure of it.”
Your eyes closed.
As you fell asleep Nahida reached out, with her minuscule amount of power she had, to your unconscious body. The green chains slowly and gently wrapped around your body, with it flickering in and out of existence as each moment passed. She was exerting herself to bring you into her prison, at least she’d be able to protect you and make sure the sages don’t do anything to you while you were in it. You were getting closer and closer to the walls, and eventually, started to phase into it, with the chains dissipating into green pixels when their job was done. Nahida pulled you the rest of the way in, and collapsed on your body, her head lying on your chest.
She was so incredibly tired from that feat, and wanted to truly sleep and not just nap. She wrapped her arms around you and dozed off.
Your arms wrapped around her in your sleep.
Two lonely beings, comforted by each other.
The Archon of Wisdom and The Creator.
The caged bird and the poor poor chased mouse.
————————————————————————-
Out side the door, dozen of guards stand confused. Vines and flowers have twisted and twined together, blocking the door entirely making it next to impossible to get in without use of an axe. Seeming growing out of nowhere with no time at all.

Hey! How’d you like this technically first chapter? I know it’s shorter than the first I did, but I wanted it entirely in 3rd person and not have to swap and disrupt the flow of things ya’know?
As I said at the top, this is a platonic thing, please please PLEASE for the love of god don’t interpret this as romantic. I will disclose if something is ‘romantic’ (but like the SAGAU au is infamous for it’s yanderes so take that with a grain of salt) and this isnt it, the children are pure because they are my babies. ESPECIALLY Nahida.
If your name is crossed out then it means I couldn’t tag you im sorry :(

The Caged Bird and Chased Mouse
Chapter 2: The Mouse Rests
HOLY HECK,,, lots of people seem to like this idea, i wasn’t expecting people to like it or want to be part of a taglist no less! Im still not a writer by trade,, im an artist so maybe,,, just maybe,,, ill draw some scenes if you ask politely (they;ll be sketches but hey if it helps you visualize then I’d be happy to help!) also If you want i can answer things if something’s unclear in the story *this is just me asking for asks tbh,, i need friends haha* anyways i’ma make this one longer to compensate for the shorter one last time.
No Warnings!
You were in a void of darkness, sitting down on the non-existent floor. You look around hoping you’d see something at least vaguely familiar to latch yourself to, but it was truly empty. You started to stand up to gain some bearings on where you were.
It felt like a dream, you thought, it had the same sort of fuzzy quality you’d feel when dreaming with nothing truly concrete. Or perhaps, it’s a worse, torturous nightmare than the one you just escaped, your traitorous brain supplied. You shook your head to make sure the thought didn’t linger for too long and started to wander in the void.
After a while of walking around aimlessly you started to think of your life before this whole fiasco, your comfortable bed with plenty of blankets, pillows and plushies. Your walls decorated with assorted posters and trinkets. Your windows that gave a clear view of your yard and the bird feeder you put to watch them come and go. Your plants outside that needed water regularly, making you one of the few Genshin players that touched grass nearly everyday.
You didn’t even realize you had closed your eyes. You opened them, expecting to see the void once again but…
It was your room. Your magnificent room. You could’ve cried at such a familiar and mundane sight.
You were about to fall into your bed but you noticed it was alright occupied by someone. It was the child that was trapped in the orb thing, she was here sitting in your bed looking at you expectantly. You sat next to her in the bed (damn, it also felt the same,) and stared back.
“…” The white-haired girl kept opening and closing her mouth as if she couldn’t think of what to say to you, “You seem so… Familiar to me. Do you know why?”
You were taken aback, but worried, was she also going to accuse you of being an imposter? You spoke after a bit “uhm, no, I’m sorry.”
“Oh. I was hoping you knew, it’s frustrating to not know something when its… uhm” She puts a finger to her chin in thought
“On the tip of your tongue?” You try and supply helpfully
“Yes! Hehe, I guess that was also ‘on the tip of my tounge’!” She giggles at what she thought of, you also laugh but mostly because of her enthusiasm. You both settle back into silence but a question was still bugging you in the back of your head;
“Why were you trapped in that… Orb thing,” You gesture a circle shape with your hands ”back in what I assume is the real world.”
“Ah, well I’m the Archon of Sumeru and-“ Your eyes widen at that but you decide to stay quiet, “I’m not fit to rule Sumeru, so I let the Sages run everything and because of that I’m not really meant to be outside of the Sanctuary so I’m stuck here.” Her head sags down when she finished speaking, making her look incredibly downtrodden
You tilt your head slightly to the side at mention of ‘Sages’, but decide to just ask simple questions since, well this has been the first character that has shown you friendliness towards you and you’d like to make a friend before they turn against you. “What’s your name? I’m sorry, i know I should’ve asked earlier but, I forget i guess. I’ll tell mine in return, its only fair.”
She lifts her head back up and gives a smile “That’s okay, I also should have asked. I’m Lesser Lord Kusanali but you can called me Nahida.” You tell her your name, your real one and not the one you used in the game, which seemed to be the name given to ‘The Creator’ from what you’ve gathered in your terrifying travels across Teyvat.
You yawn and lean back into bed, “I know this is a dream and yet I still feel tired, I wonder why that is.” Nahida looks at you while you lay down, as if she wants to do something.
“Do you want to.. cuddle Nahida?” You offer, unsure
Her eyes widen and she gives a shy slow nod to you. You open your arms as you lay on your side for her to come over. She hesitantly gets closer, almost nervous about it. Once she’s close enough you wrap your arms around her and pull her closer, she’s like a plushie shes so smol squish her, you thought as you started to drift into what felt like an even deeper sleep. Nahida’ s small arms wrapped around you waist and snuggled her head into your chest as you fell unconscious.

_________________________________________________________________________________
The Traveler felt… Lost. The force that seemed to guide them throughout Teyvat seemed to disappear, they no longer felt the warmth that the being dubbed ‘The Creator’ gifted them when they led their body to new areas and helped with everything. Paimon has been asking them what’s wrong and why they haven’t been traveling (or talking for that matter) as much as of late, because Paimon didn’t seem to understand anything about The Creator at all unlike the Traveler’s other companions. “Maybe Paimon isn’t worthy enough to receive The Creator’s warmth like me” thought the Traveler as they absentmindedly pushed around the ash from the campfire they’d set up an hour earlier.
They decided to bring out their Adventure Handbook and flipped to the Map, it seemed like they was one marker left from the last time they had been controlled by The Creator. “Hey Paimon, Tomorrow we’ll be back on the road.” Traveler said to his flying friend who was currently devouring an entire Honey Roast.
“*Nom Nom* Where to? Paimon’s bones have been aching for some good adventure!” Paimon ignored that Traveler had finally spoke a full sentence to her after weeks, more focused on the idea of going somewhere new.
“Sumeru.”
_________________________________________________________________________________
So? How you like it? It’s probably not that long if im being honest ehe. So yeah Traveler is coming into the mix, which btw you guys can decide if you want the Traveler to be Lumine or Aether! (Because I can’t deal with using They for both you the reader and the traveler because i will get confused when writing) Also the whole room thing is based on what my room is like, other than the bird feeders but I’m getting those sometime this year i promise. I also had to read the lore for Nahida and it seems there was never like,,, a solid reason for why she was trapped in the orb thing other than “Sages wanted to and she did it out of her own freewill and didnt have a larger purpose.
If your name is crossed out it means I couldn’t tag you I’m sorry :(

Traveler: aww, nahida, you're so cute~
Nahida: hehe~
-other side of the room-
Zhongli: they think kusanali is cute. You know what that means?
Venti: she is cute, there's no special-
Zhongli: it means they prefer kusanali.
Venti: ...
Zhongli: *leaning in* it means you're not special anymore. They replaced you.
Venti: *looking at nahida, unsure*
Nahida: *looking at venti, slowly starting to grin*
Venti: ...NOPE!! *jumps into the traveler*
Traveler: *catches him* Venti!?
Venti: i need attention! Right now immediately!!

[image ID: 4 images of characters from the game Genshin Impact. the first 2 images show Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, the first being a screencap of her appearance in one of the 2d “storybook”-style cutscenes, and the second being a digital drawing redesign. the next 2 images show Lesser Lord Kusanali, the first being a front-view, full-body screencap of her in-game avatar, and the second being a digital drawing redesign.
Rukkhadevata in-game is a tall, pale-skinned woman with long, white, wavy hair with pale green accents, styled loose with a single braid down one side. while not visible in this screencap, she has an “anime”-proportioned face, with large eyes + small features typical of Genshin female designs, but she also has long, pointed elf ears. she’s wearing a long, white, european-style dress with leaf motifs and green-gold accents, along with some gold/green, leafy jewelry in her hair.
the Rukkhadevata redesign is a tall, dark-skinned woman with long, white, wavy hair pulled into a loose bubble braid with some yellow/green leaves strewn throughout. she has round chin and a tall, aquiline nose which arches smoothly up into her forehead, and similar long elf ears as the original design. she’s wearing a green/yellow sari with gold/green leafy accents, with a white half-shirt + loose pants underneath, which have dark brown, bark-like eye-shaped accents. she also has white makeup and body paint which matches the eye motifs on the underclothes. she’s wearing various pieces of gold jewelry with red/blue accents, thick red anklets with gold bells, and a few blue lotuses on her belt, hair, and hand-chain jewelry. extra text about her eye-shaped bindi and eye accents reads, “bindi pupil always follows line of sight. other eye spots can also follow sight, but usually don’t.”
Kusanali in-game is a short, thin, pale-skinned toddler with long, white, wavy hair pulled into a side ponytail with some gold/green leafy jewelry. her face is proportioned similarly to the original Rukkhadevata, but more exaggerated. she’s wearing a short, European-style dress with leaf motifs and gold/green accents, some gold jewelry, and a white/green cape draping off the back of her shoulders.
the Kusanali redesign is a short, chubby, dark-skinned toddler, with long, white, wavy hair pulled into a side-bun with a few yellow/green leaves, which is tied off with a green, leaf-shaped wrap. she has a similar face shape and aquiline nose to the Rukkhadevata redesign, but chubbier and rounder. she’s wearing a white/green, no-sleeve tunic with pale gold branch designs, over top loose yellow pants, with a green/yellow, leaf-accented sash over the front of her shoulders/throat to drape over her back. she’s also wearing gold jewelry with red/blue accents, a single red anklet with gold bells, and a blue lotus in her hair. an extra doodle of her has a few changed details, with text that reads, “while imprisoned: closed lotus ((referring to the now-closed lotus bud in her hair)). closed bindi ((referring to the eye-shaped bindi that is now closed)). chain motif on throat, wrists, and ankles ((referring to the glowing, neon green chain symbol on her throat)).”
end ID]
hello friends and enemies, I have returned with another Sumeru character~ I absolutely love Dendro as an element, but Kusanali (and, by extension, Rukkhadevata) is just so painfully boring, I couldn’t let her design stand as the representation of Dendro
extra design notes under the cut~
now, I know I usually edit in-game avatars rather than fully redraw them, so this is a lil different from usual. I usually do this b/c I have particular headcanons for body/facial shapes that I think would usually distract me from the actual focus of the redesigns-- the clothes (and sometimes animal features). but since Rukkhadevata doesn’t have an in-game avatar to edit, I just decided to redraw both Rukkhadevata and Kusanali for consistency~
as usual for Sumeru characters, I looked to their names for hints about the cultural inspirations I should use, and it looks like they’re supposed to be Indian, so that’s where I started. while I tried to research more on my own (mostly frantic googling of, “Indian [x jewelry item] significance”), I apologize if I got anything wrong in my redesign process-- and please feel free to let me know if I did!
anyways, Rukkhadevatā is pretty straightforward for Genshin Rukkhadevata-- tree deity, makes sense. in combination with one of her in-game titles, “Goddess of the Woods”, I decided to go heavier on the tree symbolism. specifically, I thought it would be fun to keep the white/green color palette by giving her a birch-bark look! and lucky me, India does have native Himalayan birch! and even more fitting, that bark used to be used as paper for scriptures/writings~
now, I’ll admit, I was partly driven by my own dragonsona’s Aspen-inspired design, so I may over-exaggerated the “eye” spots on birch bark. but please forgive me, eye motifs are just too good for a wisdom goddess, y’know? especially in combination with the white lashes + eye makeup, and giant white pupils to make those peepers POP-- when she looks at you she Sees you
as for the note about the eye-shaped bindi, since the bindi is supposed to represent the seat of wisdom and third eye, I thought it would make sense for the literal God of Wisdom’s bindi to be treated as a literal third eye that she sees through (prolly not visual sight though-- prolly something similar to elemental sight?)
and this is just a silly, extra headcanon with this design, but I imagine Rukkhadevata having a really intense, blank “thinking face”, and while the rest of her eye spots usually don’t move, their pupils will suddenly snap to the object of her interest when she’s in this state. she’s usually pretty good about displaying more exaggerated facial expressions (especially towards her human subjects), but she’s naturally more monotone/blank, and sometimes she’ll just slip into it when she’s intensely observing. though sometimes she’ll do the eyespots + blank face on purpose to make a point to someone who’s perhaps being a bit too cocky, to impress upon them the weight of being Seen and Known. this is also why I drew Kusanali’s face kinda blank, b/c as a toddler, she’s not used to masking her flat aspect demeanor. hell, maybe she won’t even feel the need to as she grows up, with people around her who understand (autistic solidarity with the Traveler and like half of the Sumeru characters tbh <3 )
now, even more than Rukkhadevatā, I was really interested in what the Aranara call her-- Queen Aranyani, who irl is described as wearing ankle bells, and dancing through the forest. I know that dancing is more associated with the Goddess of Flowers in-game, but I really love the idea of dance as a strong cultural motif in Sumeru, so I gave Rukkhadevata some ghungroos, or musical bell anklets
I considered a few different sari styles for Rukkhadevata, but I gravitated towards the shorter style with loose pants underneath, so I could show off more of the birch-bark designs underneath the more leafy sari. and what can I say, I’m not immune to the pleasant shape design of loose, comfortable pants, haha
as for the jewelry, a lot of what I found seemed to be specifically associated with brides/weddings. I tried to filter out these items from my search, but some items seemed to have mixed bridal significance, or their meanings had shifted over time. the hand-chain hath phool in particular was a little unclear to me at some points. I apologize if I accidentally made Rukkhadevata a bride, please let me know if I did, haha,,
considering the cultural significance of the lotus in India, I thought a few lotuses made sense for Rukkhadevata’s design, and I just used the in-game Nilotpala Lotus as reference for the color
I went through several different hair designs for Rukkhadevata, most of them being some sort of braid or bun. I settled on the bubble braid mostly because of the pleasant shape design, and to set her braid style apart from the Raiden Shogun’s braid style, since I didn’t want two of the Archons looking too similar. I did end up giving Kusanali a bun though, partly b/c it’s cute, and partly cus’ it looks a bit like a “sprout” with the tips of her green hair sticking out of it-- fitting for a little sproutling! the leafy wrap at the base makes up for the lost ponytail silhouette, I think
speaking of Kusanali, I based her outfit off of basic Indian kid’s fashion I was able to google, which seem to mostly be tunics + some sashes sometimes. what shocked me was that the kid NPCs in Sumeru actually have somewhat accurate clothing designs for Indian kids... sure woulda been nice if that was true for the playable characters too LMAO
I replaced the birch-bark patterns with branch-like designs on Kusanali’s tunic, just to set the two designs arpart. Kusanali’s a different person and different Archon now, so she’ll prolly grow into a whole new set of motifs from her predecessor, despite the obvious similarities
and as for the imprisoned notes, it makes sense to me if Kusanali’s power is visually stifled in her design, via the closed lotus and bindi. but mostly, I just think it’s kinda fucked up that her in-game avatar still incorporates the Akademiya’s chain motif! what the hell! that should be a temporary chain, not a permanent fashion decision, geeze...
