Binge-Watching: Pokemon, Episodes 21-23
Ghosts and ghouls and things beyond the mortal ken, oh my! It’s a paranormal party in this stretch of Pokemon!
Ghost of a Chance
I’ve been a huge fan of Ghost Pokemon ever since I got into Pokemon. When you’ve got a franchise as cute and cuddly as this one, you come to really appreciate the moments where it lets itself be edgy and jagged and against the grain, and few things make the Pokemon world feel more deliciously twisted than doing battle with the souls of the dead. It’s a shame Gastly, Haunter and Gengar were the only Ghost-types in the original 151, because I was always hungry for more of the buggers (and I thank the successive generations for delivering on that spooky, spooky potential). So you can imagine my happiness to once again return to the gaseous ghost trio so soon after meeting a talking Gastly, and this time for a proper haunted house adventure! I love the idea that this trio of spirits are essentially aspiring frat bros, pulling pranks and yukking it up with all the blind ambition of a college freshman at his first open mic comedy jam. And Ash proves once more why he’s the Pokemon whisperer once he realizes what they were doing and cuts the tension with a well-placed comedy critique (”I’m sorry to say it, but their humor really leaves me cold.”) Man, Ghost Pokemon are real freaking cool, and I’m already impatient to reach Diamond and Pearl, which has some of my favorite Ghost-types of all time. What can I say, I always appreciate a good oogie boogie.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
But as fun as the ghosts are, the real star of this stretch is Sabrina, leader of the Saffron City gym and instant entry to the “Step on me, senpai” club. Fuck me sideways, I got legitimate chills when she first revealed herself from the shadows behind her sentient doll. She’s instantly ten times more intimidating than anything we’ve faced thus far, stone-cold and impossible to crack with a demeanor that crushes you under the sheer weight of futility. You can’t reason with her, you can’t throw her off her game, and she’ll wear the same in-control expression she always does as she sucks you into her toy box and turns you into living bowling pins, watching your death without flinching a muscle. It does sort of beg the question of how people even get psychic powers in this world, not to mention why no one’s called a SWAT team on Sabrina’s ass yet. Seriously, she’s an official member of the Pokemon League system, and considering how many trainers participate in the league, plenty of people must have beaten her in combat, so she’s not all-powerful. Plus, you know, attempted homicide doesn’t seem like a very salient aspect of competitive sports, least of all from the coaches themselves. But hey, at least she’s laughing her ass off now thanks to Haunter’s shenanigans, and all is right with the world. Still, though, I’ll definitely miss that stone-cold glare that could freeze you with a single piercing thought. Hey, don’t judge me, we all know I have a type by this point.
Best of Team Rocket
-Not gonna lie, James makes a fine-ass hula girl.
-It’s the subtle touches that really make Team Rocket shine. Like how they’re sweating and panting after changing clothes so fast. They are so goddamn committed to the bit.
-”Meowth, where are your manners? It’s impolite to leave your mouth hanging open like that.”
-”Thanks for breaking my fall!”
-”Looks like Team Rocket’s throwing up again!”
-”Now you’ve got my brain scrambled! Let’s cut the eggs-planations and capture Pikachu!”
-”The members of Team Rocket have been trained to resist all silliness!” John Cena voice: Are you sure about that?
Odds and Ends
-”You two don’t want to stand here and insult each other all day!” “Yes we do!” pfft
-”Their show is boring.” “It’ll get cancelled pretty soon.” THEY’RE SO FUCKING DONE AKSJFHAKJSHDASD
-Ash Almost Becomes a Harem Protagonist(tm)
-”We’ve got enough to scare us without your bone-headed jokes!” Misty, you’re cancelled. Again.
-”It just crossed the cute line!” Man, imagine if real-world dogs could paralyze you by licking you. They’d be the most dangerous predators on the face of the earth.
-Okay, the places where the dub team imposed English text over signs that were originally in Japanese are very obvious. Shame Photoshop wasn’t around back then, huh?
-”That must mean you’re a photographer!” Critical thinking has never been this boy’s strong suit, has it?
-Also, Sabrina’s dad didn’t just fall off that bench in shock, he quite literally yeeted himself five feet in the air. You can’t tell me he wasn’t waiting for this moment all his life.
-”You must have taken her baby pictures too!” “Just how dense can a person be?” No additional commentary necessary.
Four badges down, four to go. See you next time!

Shivers! Our resident menace. A very unique variation, being a Ghost/Ice type.
Shivers has been with us for a little while now. She’s settled in nicely and has no intention of leaving, which nobody here minds very much, haha, she’s quite the heart-stealer. Shivers was sent to us from Sinnoh after she was found in the very cold mountainous region- she was struggling in the harsh conditions and they figured she might be better off here near Wyndon, where it still gets quite cold in the mountains but not nearly as harsh as in Sinnoh. She poses a bit of a mystery- we’ve no idea how she came to be, if she had family in Sinnoh, or if she simply evolved a new type to try and deal with the cold after getting lost in the mountains. She doesn’t remember much, unfortunately, she’s quite young so if she had a family, they were separated probably when she was still a Gastly, maybe even before she hatched.
She doesn’t have any one owner- Shivers has no interest in becoming someone’s Pokemon at the moment, though she does have her favourites on staff. This is both a blessing a curse; if she likes you then she’ll cuddle up with you, but she’ll also take a lot of delight in scaring the daylights out of you. She particularly enjoys popping out of my computer screen, but you can also spot her jumping out of walls, from behind corners, and out of the floor. She’s figured out who’s ok to scare at this point and makes a point to leave some staff alone, but if you’re someone who is ok to scare, she is merciless. She also enjoys other pranks- making the floors slick with ice, freezing doors shut, dropping room temperatures. She takes full advantage of being able to change her size to be smaller, something she’s quite good at. She’s a very mischievous Gengar, which is fairly typical of the species.
We have a couple of Gengars owned by staff who she spends quite a bit of time with and helped her settle in here. The two don’t partake in as many shenanigans as she does, but they will help her out if they feel so inclined. They’re both pretty fond of her and seem to have taken on an older sibling role of sorts. She does well with other Ghost type residents- we have a few Duskulls she enjoys eating with, and she likes to play with the wild Trevenant in the woods. She’s very playful, very cheerful, definitely still a kid. At first she was really flighty and hardly ever came into sight, but over the last few months she’s come a long way and now fits really well into the general hustle and bustle of the place.
In terms of basic species stuff, she’s a bit above average size for a Gengar. She’s also... fluffier? She almost seems to have fur. Her colouration is almost completely white, except for the tips of her ears, and the ice-like fin that goes up her back, which are both blue, as well as her eyes. Her moveset is Ice Beam, Shadow Sneak, Teleport, and Frost Breath. She’s a bit chilly to the touch, and doesn’t seem to retain heat within her body very well, and is adjusting to the cold mountain weather as fall really sets in here. She spends more time around the facility than she does fully out in the mountains, but she has been spending quite a bit of time there lately to help with our newest Ice Type rescues.
In short: Shivers is our resident menace, a bit of a mystery, and we love her dearly.
