Jacob Meets Rachel
1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the people of the east. 2 As he looked, he saw a well in the field and three flocks of sheep lying there beside it; for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the wellâs mouth was large, 3 and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the mouth of the well.
4 Jacob said to them, âMy brothers, where do you come from?â They said, âWe are from Haran.â 5 He said to them, âDo you know Laban son of Nahor?â They said, âWe do.â 6 He said to them, âIs it well with him?â âYes,â they replied, âand here is his daughter Rachel, coming with the sheep.â 7 He said, âLook, it is still broad daylight; it is not time for the animals to be gathered together. Water the sheep, and go, pasture them.â 8 But they said, âWe cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.â
9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her fatherâs sheep; for she kept them. 10 Now when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his motherâs brother Laban, and the sheep of his motherâs brother Laban, Jacob went up and rolled the stone from the wellâs mouth, and watered the flock of his motherâs brother Laban. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and wept aloud. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her fatherâs kinsman, and that he was Rebekahâs son; and she ran and told her father.
13 When Laban heard the news about his sisterâs son Jacob, he ran to meet him; he embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things, 14 and Laban said to him, âSurely you are my bone and my flesh!â And he stayed with him for a month.
Jacob Marries Labanâs Daughters
15 Then Laban said to Jacob, âBecause you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?â 16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leahâs eyes were lovely, and Rachel was graceful and beautiful. 18 Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, âI will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.â 19 Laban said, âIt is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.â 20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, âGive me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.â 22 So Laban gathered together all the people of the place, and made a feast. 23 But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 (Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.) 25 When morning came, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, âWhat is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?â 26 Laban said, âThis is not done in our countryâgiving the younger before the firstborn. 27 Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me for another seven years.â 28 Jacob did so, and completed her week; then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 29 (Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her maid.) 30 So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. He served Laban for another seven years.
31 When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. 32 Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben; for she said, âBecause the Lord has looked on my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.â 33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, âBecause the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son alsoâ; and she named him Simeon. 34 Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, âNow this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sonsâ; therefore he was named Levi. 35 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, âThis time I will praise the Lordâ; therefore she named him Judah; then she ceased bearing. â Genesis 29 | New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised (NRSVA) New Revised Standard Version Bible: Anglicised Edition, copyright © 1989, 1995 the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Family Drama (Genesis 29:15-28)
Love and hate, unity and inequality, privileged and powerless, gender and patriarchy, altruism and selfishness, all combine for a strange brew we call âfamily.â It seems you canât live with them, or without them.
Jacob works to gain Rachelâs hand, 5th century mosaic, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome Laban said to him [Jacob] âJust because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? [What if we just hadn't said goodbye?]
Some design notes below the cut
-both of their expressions are meant to represent the way they felt about the outcome of ep 24. shinji has his eyes on kaworu with an expression of hurt and betrayal meanwhile kaworu is at peace with his decision, eyes closed and unable to see how shinji may feel now
-i know the pilots are never seen wielding weapons themselves in the show and that evas haven't been shown using a sword at any point either however i kind of live for the fact that swords held blade down look like crosses. i couldn't help myself with that one it was too good an opportunity to pass
-hard to tell bc I couldn't put much effort into them but the flowers making up kaworu's bouquet are blue roses, often recognised as a symbol for secret or unattainable love
-whether the way kaworu holds a bouquet makes him look like a bride ready to walk down the aisle or a corpse laying in their casket. well. ill leave the choice up to you
-i also wanted the items they're holding to parallel one another. shinji holds a red sword dripping with blue blood meanwhile kaworu holds blue roses ever so slightly stained by fresh blood. shinji is the only one holding a weapon because he's the only one causing physical harm in the end, and kaworu doesn't have any because he's given up on fighting for his life

A Wife for Isaac
1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh:
3 And I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
4 But you shall go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
5 And the servant said unto him, Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring your son again unto the land from where you came?
6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware that you bring not my son there again.
7 The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke unto me, and that swore unto me, saying, Unto your descendants will I give this land; he shall send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife unto my son from there.
8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son there again.
9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter.
10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.
11 And he made his camels to kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray you, send me good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham.
13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down your pitcher, I pray you, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also: let the same be she that you have appointed for your servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that you have showed kindness unto my master.
15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray you, drink a little water of your pitcher.
18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hastened, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
19 And when she had finished giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.
20 And she hastened, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to learn whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
22 And it came to pass, as the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;
23 And said, Whose daughter are you? tell me, I pray you: is there room in your father's house for us to lodge in?
24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore unto Nahor.
25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and fodder enough, and room to lodge in.
26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshiped the LORD.
27 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's kinsmen.
28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother's house these things.
29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. â Genesis 24:1-29 | King James 2000 Bible (KJB2K) The King James 2000 Bible, copyright © Doctor of Theology Robert A. A Divine Appointment (Genesis 29:1-14)
You never quite know whatâs around the corner of your life â whether good or bad. Yet, the real issue is trust.
Jacob and Rachel at the well, by Friedrich Wilhelm MĂŒller (Kirchditmold 1801â1889) Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples. There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well. The stone over the mouth of the well was large. When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherdsâŠ

Line Upon Line Lesson 029: A Deceiver Deceived
Genesis 29:25 - So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, âWhat is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?â
ââWhat happened to Jacob here? How did he get into this situation? Why was he deceived?
Letâs read together Genesis 29:15-17.
It is interesting to note that Bible translations of Genesis 29:17 vary wildly in interpreting what kind of eyes Leah had. Some translations say her eyes were weak, dull, or even bleary. Other translations say her eyes were tender or delicate. A few translations even say Leahâs eyes were attractive.
Perhaps Leahâs eyes did not have the sparkle or sharpness that would attract Jacobâs attention. In any case, Jacob found her sister Rachel more attractive.
Letâs read together Genesis 29:18-20; Genesis 34:12; and 1 Samuel 18:25.
âIn ancient Bible Times, it was customary for the groomâs family to give a dowry to the brideâs family. This could come in the form of property, goods, or money.
Jacob was estranged from his family, since he had to flee his brother Esauâs wrath. Since Jacob literally had nothing besides the clothes on his back, he offered seven years of his labor to Laban.
Letâs read together Genesis 27:3; Genesis 29:22-20; and Galatians 6:7-9.
Just as Jacob deceived Isaac, Laban deceived Jacob. It seems that Laban had profited greatly from Jacobâs labor. He did not want to let Jacob go. Laban likely got Jacob drunk at the wedding feast and gave him Leah instead of Rachel. Â
When Jacob confronted Laban about his deception, Laban offered Jacob to work another seven years for Rachelâs hand in marriage. Laban introduced polygamy to Jacob, which will cause much familial strife in the years to come.
Jacob experienced what it felt like to be deceived by someone. He reaped what he had sowed. Â
Letâs read together Psalm 27:14; Psalm 139:23-24; and Isaiah 40:31.
If Jacob were more patient, he would have received Godâs blessing without suffering through so many trials. God allowed Jacob to be deceived so that he could be aware of the flaws in his own character and repent.
May we strive to be honest in our actions and wait upon the Lord.
