↪ Harry Morgan makes his first appearance on the show, not as Colonel Sherman Potter but the loony General Bartford Hamilton Steele. 🤪

Happy birthday, Harry Morgan (1915 - 2011), M*A*S*H’s Colonel Sherman T. Potter (and for one episode in season 3, the delightfully crazy General Bartford Hamilton Steele)

MAS*H Retro Review: The General Flipped at Dawn - Season 3 Episode 1
youtube
I love the television show MAS*H, so I thought it would be fun if I rewatch every single episode and recorded a review of said episode. Join me today along this five year long mission as I review the Season 3 Episode 1: The General Flipped at Dawn.
"The General Flipped at Dawn was the season premiere episode of Season 3 of the CBS-TV series MASH, also the 49th overall series episode. Written by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum, and directed by Larry Gelbart, it first aired on September 10, 1974 and was repeated on Christmas Eve that year." "An inspection by the strict Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele puts the 4077th on edge. The final straw comes when he orders the unit to move the camp closer to the front, to be more economical and show that a MASH unit should be mobile." -- https://mash.fandom.com/wiki/The_General_Flipped_at_Dawn_(TV_series_episode)

The Generals of Season 3
Harry Morgan as kooky General Bartford Hamilton Steele, who frightens and mystifies everyone with his insistence that camp be moved nearer the front (s03e01). Luckily he’s found to be barking mad before any real damage can be done. We’ll see more of Harry anon, of course, but this appearance is a fun (and very different) test run for him.

James Gregory as the unfortunate General Robert “Iron Guts” Kelly (s03e04). While in a compromising position with Major Houlihan, Kelly has an M.I. and expires. His aide, Colonel Wortman, collaborates with the Swampmen to move the corpse to make it look like the General was killed in battle. (Note that Weekend at Bernie’s is still 15 years off at this point.)

And finally, General Douglas MacArthur himself, who breezes through camp amid days’ worth of pomp and fanfare, salutes Klinger and drives right by (s03e21). The actor portraying Big Mac has no lines and no credit, but I buy him as the real thing: in Henry’s words, “the biggest, highest, monkeyest of ‘em all.”

Context
Mash Season 3 Episode 1.
Trivia: Harry Morgan, who plays the visiting General, returns to Mash in season 4 as the unit's Commanding Officer General Sherman T Potter.
An inspection by the strict and somewhat deranged Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele puts the 4077th on edge. The final straw comes when he orders them to move the unit closer to the front, to be more economical and show that the M in MASH stands for mobile.
"Blake and Steele next visit the Officers’ Club where the General meets Trapper and Marty Williams. Steele asks Marty how far away the front is by air (20 minutes) and how much fuel is consumed (20 gallons an hour). Steele is mortified and wants the camp moved to the front lines to cut down on fuel waste. He wants to put the "mobile" back in "M*A*S*H" and wants to scout new locations for the camp."
