hey I hope this isn't too personal but your blog kinda made me realize I'm a sadist and (possibly?) a domme? having lots of feelings about this revelation so I kinda have an odd question as like: how does one get over like cognitive dissonance with regards to self conception? sorry if that's worded weird but like, I'm a huge massive softy with like, hyperempathy type brain nonsense so its kinda hard to imagine myself actually like *as* that kinda person. I'm aware soft-domme type stuff exists but idk like how to put it together in my head? sorry if this is a lil incoherent I just woke up lol. thank you for your kink education stuff and I hope your weekend goes well ^w^
(also any general starting out safety tips are greatly appreciated cuz ngl I'm very in over my head and wanna nip any hazards in the bud before I try experimenting)
Hi there! Not too personal at all, I’m happy to talk about stuff like this. I meant to answer this sooner but I’ve just been too damn busy irl, so here I am now!
When we are presented with new information and our beliefs are not making sense anymore, it’s time to sit down and reevaluate those beliefs. If you haven’t already, I would go look at this post, which goes into more depth about shame and questioning ideas about kinks. Since that post covered shame, I won’t go into depth on here, but we are going to talk about beliefs.
Why does this happen?
What is generally happening in cases like you’re talking about, is that we have formed ideas about ourselves (ex. “I am a big softy + hyperempathetic person”) and about the world (ex. “Sadists are tough/mean/scary/whatever”), and then we create logical conclusions based on those ideas (ex. “I couldn’t be a sadist, because I am soft and not tough/mean/scary”). Which works fine until we get new information that contradicts our conclusions.
What do we do?
When that happens, and we want to resolve it, we gotta find some flexibility in those beliefs! In your case, this might look something like this:
What is “that kinda person”, and exactly what parts don’t fit for you? What parts do fit?
Where did the “that kinda person” idea come from?
Is this always the case? Are sadists 100% like that?
What might someone look like who was very empathetic and ALSO a sadist? How do you feel about the idea?
Why might it actually make sense that someone empathetic would be a sadist?
The whole point here is get a good idea of where the conflict is, why it’s a conflict and then looking for areas of flexibility.
I can’t answer those questions for you, but here is a couple things from my experience that may be useful. I have known a lot of sadists, and just like every other group of people, they vary widely, but my favourite sadists have always been the people who are big, empathetic teddy bears who want to take care of me and coddle me just as much as they want to hurt me. I, myself, am like you, where I am very empathetic but I also very much enjoy psychological sadism.
Part of it, too, is that it just takes time to warm up to these new ideas, and you don’t need to go straight into the hardcore stuff. You can integrate sadism with basically any other kink, and sadism can look a ton of different ways. If it’s more that you like the idea of seeing someone struggling or being afraid, then even stuff like giving someone pleasure or taking care of them can be sadistic. And if you’re more into the actual act of inflicting pain, then you can do it in ways where people are enthusiastically encouraging you the whole time, if that’s what you need. You can also be a sadistic sub! Honestly, I think that’s the wonderful thing about kink - there’s a million ways to mix and match, and cater your experiences to exactly what you like.
Re: starting out safety tips, I think there’s already lots of good resources on this, so look into things like negotiation, safewords, SSC/RACK, red flags, etc. This post is already getting long so I’ll just say one thing that I don’t see talked about enough.
When you’re exploring new stuff and especially new relationships/dynamics, it’s very easy to get swept up by the emotions of it, particularly if you’re a people pleasing type person. All of the bad experiences I have had have stemmed from this - from being too excited and not being able to look at the situation rationally. So imo, it’s important to have clear boundaries for yourself (i.e. I will not do any sex stuff with someone until we have talked about xyz), and to have a plan to keep yourself safe that works under the assumption that you will likely be too enamoured to want to pull yourself away from the dynamic. Having platonic kinky friends really helps with this stuff! What all that actually looks like is a whole other discussion, so I’ll save that for another day.

My Approach to Consent
I realized that I say I use "BDSM-style consent systems" in my pinned post without ever really talking about what that means to me. So, for the sake of clarity and to have something to link to, and also just thinking through my own thoughts, I've laid everything out in detail. This is not a guide for how everyone should do consent! It is a description of how I do it personally. It is meant to help you decide whether you feel safe in my space, especially if you're someone who is interested in roleplay, and it's meant to offer a starting point if you don't know what I might mean by "BDSM-style consent systems." I am not an expert, so if you're interested, I recommend looking up any of these terms to find much more detailed information about how to use them. You can also find many other systems and theories about what consent really is and how it should function. But, this is my own understanding in my own words.
Overview
The need for consent applies to everything we do with or to one another that could be unwanted or cause harm, either now or in the future. That's…pretty much everything. Things that would usually be considered pleasant require consent just as much as typically unpleasant things do. Sex requires consent, impact play requires consent, giving someone gifts requires consent, a hug requires consent, using honorifics requires consent, disclosing your traumatic backstory requires consent - everything. It is our baseline way of respecting one another's will and autonomy as living beings.
I call it out when discussing whump as kink specifically because I think that many people don't consider comfort "dangerous" or "sexual" enough for the consent structures around it to require a lot of thought. But when offering comfort is so deeply emotionally charged, the way it is for me, I think it's really important to discuss. Comfort can be unwanted. It can be oppressive or manipulative. I am doing everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen.
I use a combination of opt-in and opt-out consent, under the RACK model. Let's get into what that means.
RACK
I use the RACK model of consent, which stands for Risk-Aware Consensual Kink, but in general, kinky or not, I think all activities should be engaged in with an awareness of risk. So, all parties have to understand what they are agreeing to and who they are doing it with and what the risks are likely to be, and the person offering to do this has to get clear confirmation that this is the case. It is each person's responsibility (both Dom and sub) to decide how much risk they are willing to take on for themselves, but everyone who has information also has an obligation to disclose it. Lying, cheating, and withholding key information (like an STI diagnosis) all violate RACK.
I do not use "Safe, Sane, and Consensual" (SSC) because I think that requires a definition of both the words "safe" and "sane" that we do not reliably have, while ignoring the importance of being informed. And I do not use "Enthusiastic Consent" because, as a person who used to identify along the ace spectrum, I understand that it is possible to consent to sex and very much want it on an intellectual level without being enthusiastic at all, and that people's autonomy in those situations is very important. "Willing Consent" is a decent alternative I have heard.
And in order to be "willing," RACK has to happen under the right circumstances. Everyone has to be sober and not in any kind of altered mental state. Everyone has to be able to follow RACK (so they have to be mature, informed, and at liberty to do so reliably). It's not possible for a person to consent if they have strong reasons for saying "yes" that don't pertain to their actual wishes (such as feeling unsafe, feeling pressured to impress someone who has significantly more social status, fear of losing money or resources, being in the midst of a manic episode, or being intoxicated). It has to happen before the activity starts, and you have to get either verbal confirmation or very clear nonverbal communication (like a nod) that indicates the person understands what is being done and agrees to do it. I try to ask if they've done anything like this before, and if not, to explain what it will entail and what the risks could be, if any.
Opt-Out Consent
Consent is important for every single action, but we don't have to ask every single time before every single action we do in daily life. Opt-out consent systems apply to most of the less-risky activities taking place in a relationship (like gift-giving on holidays, hugs for people who are generally not touch-averse, etc.). In my opinion, opt-out is NOT sufficient for consent in the bedroom, only the first step. I'll talk about opt-in during the next section.
But first things first. What does opt-out consent look like in practice? Well, I don't have to announce that I'm getting someone a birthday present and spoil the surprise. But I do have to respect their wishes if they opt-out. If they tell me in advance not to get a gift (the equivalent of setting up a limit), I don't.
I ask for a list of limits before playing together for the first time (or before playing in a new category of play, like switching to impact play when we've only ever done rope bondage). It's true what people say: having no limits is a red flag. I have played with people who claimed to have no limits and it was scary and confusing, because I knew there must be something they wouldn't enjoy but neither of us would know unless we stumbled upon it. I won't say that I'll NEVER play with a person like this, but we have to talk in advance about the fact that they DO have limits and just haven't discovered them yet, and if they can't admit that, then it's not safe to play together. I will expect them to start doing research and to give me feedback about the limits they discover as we try new things.
But opting out goes well beyond setting limits in advance. Going back to the birthday gift example, if they say, "This gift is REALLY too much, I'm not comfortable accepting this," I have to let it go and not give them the gift, and not try to give them a similar gift next time unless something major has changed. Similarly, if I go in for a hug and they pull away, I have to stop. I don't get to decide what makes someone else uncomfortable, and I don't get to try again.
I tend to err on the side of caution with this stuff, which sometimes clashes with parts of culture that encourage modesty, the "no you first," "no I'll pay for it," sort of politeness that is intended to be resisted. But honestly, I really don't like those parts of my culture. I think they are unhealthy in terms of consent. I don't want to be put in the position of pressuring someone else into accepting money, gifts, or touch that they CLAIM not to want even if they actually do want it, because then I have to take on the risk that I could mess up and force things on someone who actually doesn't want those things. So I am very strict with my opt-out consent. If I say, "I'll pay for dinner," and you say, "No, I've got it," we're not arguing for five minutes about who takes the check. I'm just going to accept your no and say, "Well, okay, thanks!" That can be surprising for people, but it encourages honesty. Hopefully next time they will know to say what they truly mean, and if they seem to be struggling to do that, that's something we can talk about and I can try to make them feel safer to reveal their wishes. But it should never be handled by me steamrolling over what they claim is a "no" to get to a "yes" that I presume is underneath.
It's the same in the bedroom. If someone feels too shy to say "yes" when they mean it, perhaps due to shame, that still DOESN'T mean I get to steamroll over their no. We can have a conversation about what circumstances would make it easier for them to communicate what they really want in the future, but I'm going to keep taking their "no" as a "no" and we won't do anything until they're able to clearly communicate a "yes." It's dangerous for everyone to play together when someone is not able to communicate clearly.
In a long-term relationship, opt-out consent may start to apply to more areas of life. For example, you may agree that the end of date night is usually a good time to naturally start kissing and making out, and that there doesn't have to be a ton of discussion around it every time. But, if there's ever a day when someone suddenly doesn't want to do that, they still always have the right to opt out.
Likewise, you might arrange to have a no-holds-barred, opt-out experimentation session, where you just...try things in bed, and see what sticks, and if you don't like what's happening, you'll call for it to stop. This can be a fun way to get to know each other and yourself. But I wouldn't personally do anything like this without discussing limits first and having enough experience with someone to know they'll stop if I ask them to. Again, the opting-out is key to this style of consent, and I use it VERY sparingly for anything more serious than who pays for dinner.
Opt-In Consent
This type of consent is added on top of opt-out consent for situations that you know in advance might be charged, like sex or BDSM or things one of you has a kink for or major life decisions.
Under an opt-in system, you can still opt out anytime, but you also have to opt-in. Consent must be obtained in advance for every part of a scene or sex act that you plan to do. This also has to be done at the right time to abide by RACK. In my opinion, it's wisest not to spring any new ideas on my partner in the middle of a scene/sex even if I think of something that could be really fun, because they might not have enough time and emotional capacity to really think it through and assess the physical and emotional risks while everything else is going on.
That doesn't necessarily mean doing a checklist in advance, though. I'll be honest: I don't have a lot of familiarity with formal negotiations where you have a whole checklist of kinks and check yes or no to them all. In my relationships, I have usually just added kinks and sex positions one by one as we want to try them.
In practice, this looks more like, "How would you feel about trying X this weekend/in this scene?" and then we talk about what it would entail in more detail, and then we try it on the next date if everyone agrees. We do that one activity together, and nothing else. No need to make it complicated. It doesn't make sense to me to spend a half hour checking boxes that say yes or no to everything from piss to fisting when we might not ever end up wanting to try that and will have to go consult the list to see what it said, because I probably won't remember a list that long. It would be more useful if you're entering a dynamic where asking about new ideas that come up throughout the relationship would break you out of the D/s headspace, or if you wanted to add a bunch of elements to new scenes at once (like the no-holds-barred experimentation session mentioned earlier). But I don't typically enjoy that type of play myself.
Revoking Consent
Of course, consent can be revoked at any time during any kind of play. In general, I don't play with CNC, so plain-language "no," "stop," etc. can be used in place of safewords. However, I like to have a stop-light system of safewords in place anyway, just in case it is ever difficult to speak about what we need in plain language. This means "red" for "stop everything immediately" and "yellow" for "let's check in/something minor might be off."
For long term partners, I also like to have an additional safeword or signal in place for check-ins that may happen under unusual circumstances, such as in public where language has to sound natural, or when it's not possible to speak out loud.
In reality, no one has ever used either of these types of safewords, and neither have I, in all my years of playing (at least that I can remember? And I'm pretty sure I'd remember that...). It's almost always possible to communicate in plain language since I don't do CNC. And it doesn't often get to that point anyway, because partners who know each other well tend to be able to do things they know will be appreciated, without accidentally stepping into the danger zone again and again. If anyone is constantly safewording (outside of planned scenes where you try to play to your limit just for the sake of it), I would take that as a sign that something is wrong. Somebody is pushing limits or being careless.
I want to acknowledge finally that I'm also not perfect at any of this - it's what I aspire to, but it's very possible for me to step over someone's boundaries by accident. Everyone does. Maybe we misread signals and go in for a hug when it wasn't wanted, or forget that someone wrote they didn't want to be called by a particular title in their list of limits. But this system is designed to put a lot of safeguards in place so that it's difficult for me to mess up severely, and easy for a partner to tell me to stop if I have in fact messed up. Making submissives/whumpees feel safe enough to tell me anything that makes them uncomfortable and making sure they know I will admit to my mistakes without resentment towards them is also a crucial part of the system. That really just comes down to how I treat people every day. I really hope I am doing well enough.
So that's my overview! I might edit this post in the future and use it as a living document, because I'm sure there's more that I didn't think of. But I wanted to get most of it down in one place for my own sake. I hope this was of some use or interest for you.

The consensual kinkster/paraphile (CKP) flag! This flag does NOT include nonconsensual kink practices or attraction to beings that cannot consent, but is otherwise inclusive of all kinks, fetishes, and paraphilias. CKPs consider consent of the utmost importance and work to keep kink spaces safe, accepting, and inclusive, and promote learning about the shared history of the kink and queer communities. We also work to protect those who are vulnerable, like children and animals, from being exploited sexually under the guise of "kink". This label is only to be used by adults.
Stripe meanings:
The diagonal stripes are meant to call back to the earliest kink pride flag (and one of the earliest pride flags in general), the Tony DeBlase leather flag.
The navy stripe is from the modernized leather pride flag. It represents the BDSM community, its subcultures, and all consensual kinks and paraphilias falling under the BDSM umbrella. It also represents trust.
The purple stripe is from the (cheshire) mad pride flag. It represents those with sexual neurodivergences such as those with sexual intrusive thoughts from OCD, sexual trauma survivors, hypersexuals, and disordered paraphiles*. It also represents acceptance.
(*it does not represent non-consensual paraphilic attraction, as CKPs do not condone or encourage attraction to nonconsenting beings, or engaging with this attraction in any way. People with these paraphilic disorders are not excluded from the CKP community as long as they are pro-recovery, anti-contact, and do not consider their disorders to be kinks or their attraction something to be proud of, but this flag doesn't represent that attraction. It can, however, represent recovery from that attraction and supporting the recovery of others.)
The pink stripe is for partialists, morphophiles, and other body-related kinks and paraphilias. It represents those who are attracted to certain specific parts of the body, certain body types, body parts of certain sizes, body modifications, transformation (tf), macrophilia, microphilia, etc. It also represents desire.
The red stripe is from the objectum flag and is for fetishists and objectophiles (and kinky objectums who prefer to just use objectum). It represents those with fetishes for/attraction to objects, including certain materials, certain clothing, certain toys/apparatuses, and other object-related kinks. It also represents liberation.
The black stripe represents consensual kinks and paraphilias that may be considered "gross" or "weird" or "scary", such as ones related to bodily functions, CNC roleplay, and potentially dangerous kinks (e.g. knifeplay, breathplay etc). It also represents solidarity.
The white stripes represent commitment to keeping the kink community safe for those in it, keeping minors out of it, and prevention of those who promote or engage in nonconsensual acts or feel attraction to beings that cannot consent from co-opting the kink label/community and trivializing the damage those things cause. They also represent consent.
CKPs are PRO:
RACK (risk-aware consensual kink). An alternative to SSC (safe, sane, consensual) that isn't ableist or exclusive of potentially unsafe consensual kinks- many "safe" kinks such as bondage have safety risks and shouldn't be labeled as safe as this is misleading and potentially dangerous misinformation. Risk-awareness requires knowledge and implementation of all possible safety measures, and recklessness and irresponsibility aren't acceptable in the kink community.
Kink pride/kink at pride. It is against sexual acts at pride (or with non-consenting viewers in general), but supportive of kink gear and pride flags being displayed at pride parades, as they have been from the beginning.
Harkness test. For those unaware, the harkness test is a guide to ethical attraction involving fictional beings. It requires that the being must be sapient and of an age that is capable of consent (or adult-equivalent ageless beings such as demons), and that as long as consent can be communicated and established, it's ethical.
Inclusion. CKPs are inclusive of aspecs, mspecs (including mspec gays/lesbians), ethical non-monogamy/polyamory, objectum/conceptum, cupiospecs, autospecs, xenogender, neogender, nondysphoric, intersex, altersex, aldernic, gender nonconforming, agab nonconforming, pronoun nonconforming, and all system/alterhuman origins/types.
Sexual health, including inclusive sex education, freely available contraception, freely available abortion, freely available HRT, freely available sex/gender affirming care, and freely available preventative medication (like PrEP). It also uplifts and supports those with STIs and sexual disabilities/dysfunctions and does not shun or shame them for having them. It also supports those with non-sexual disabilities that cause difficulty with sex, or causes others to infantilize them/take away their sexual agency.
Reclamation. Beings should be allowed to reclaim slurs against them and the sexualization/fetishization of their identities/bodies.
Having safe, accessible, inclusive spaces for kinky adults to socialize and play in consensually without fear or shame.
CKPs are ANTI:
Sexualization of non-consenting beings, including drawings, writings, and any other depiction- real or fictional- meant to be sexually attractive to those with non-consensual paraphilias.
Incest/consanguinamory.
Proship/profic/"fiction doesn't affect reality".
Radqueer.
Kinkshaming. A consensual kink squicking you out doesn't make it bad or worthy of ridicule. (This doesn't refer to jokes between friends and the kinkshaming kink as long as everyone's cool w it).
Calling people pedophiles or zoophiles when they are not (e.g. furries, petplayers, ABDLs).
Harassment, bullying, grooming, and all other forms of abuse.
Slut-shaming and prude-shaming.
Cops. Cops can and will arrest you for consensual kink!
Whew... this is long and it took forever to refine, as I took this very seriously. Sorry for no image description, I'd appreciate it if someone could make one for me to reblog, or I'll add one myself later when I have the spoons. I'm very proud of this!!! :3
DNI with this post or account if you intend to be an asshole and insert your shitty anti-kink or pro-ship opinions where they aren't wanted or needed. (Or if you're a minor, of course).

Your biomods are inefficient. SSC's crustacean mimicry line paired with speculative respiratory system engineering is far superior. I can work at absolute depths for weeks on end without rest. Trust a merc to pick something cool and dangerous looking over something useful.
Ah, a Smith Shimano groupie. Let me clear this up for you. I didn't pick out these biomods, I was forcibly biomodded when I was in prison. Nasty place, not your regular rim lockup centre. Offically it was a community service rehabiliation centre, a place where even the toughest of cons could be fixed up and set on the straight and narrow. Now I know that someone like you has had their brain partially dissolved in SSC crap but you can probably tell where this is going. All cells were windowless, and the only windows in the prison were so fogged up you could barely tell what was outside. Three meals a day, each one a plate of what could generously be called dog food. Wet meaty slop, stank to high hell but when you're starving you eat. Routines were the same, we had gym time, regular psych checkups, medical checks and two hours of "recreational time". We got big old VR pods, you'd think it'd be some hippie shit like flowery medows where you could frolic with sheep or something. Instead you got a gladitoral combat sim and the most violent game of hide and seek you've ever seen. Well turns out the "community service" we were going to be doing involved getting modded, and the games were training. Folks would get taken into check ups, and then you wouldn't see them again for days, sometimes you just didn't see them again at all. Those who did come back ended up looking a little more like seafood, day in day out, more people kept getting changed, eventually we realised that the food was laced with drugs to make us easier to mould, that the games and subliminal messaging in them, and that the psych tests were there to check if we still remembered who we were. Got to the point where I started seeing people who I knew by name reduced to fucking animals. Couldn't speak, couldn't even walk right. Sure the mods gave us some sharp senses, but that's small comfort when you've realised your fate is to end up as an aquatic sniffer dog. Oh and even the ones who got off lucky like me? We're still fucked. I need to get my teeth pulled every month or they will explode out of my fucking jaw. So enjoy you underwater you McDaniels Honey Bustard Picked Sea Fuck Meal, I am aware my mods suck. I didn't want them, I can't get rid of them, so I'm just living with them and accepting them.
