Hi, Kirri! I'm from South America and I'm trying to do a research about australian high school. I would like you to clarify some questions I have about school subjects, like: which ones are optional and which are mandatory? also, if you could send me some reliable websites than i can look up. every website i see says something different, can be very confusing so I decided to ask a australian person. Thank you!!!!
Hi, hey, i've been summoned! Okay, i'll admit to you upfront, it's been a hot minute since I was in high school so my knowledge is partly from personal experience but also what is published online. The school structures and curriculum differs from state to state, so it's no wonder you had trouble finding clear answers. I'll try to explain simply:
Australian high schools run from years 7 to 12. (We actually have 13 school years in total including Kindergarten, or preparatory, which is not numbered.) Students can finish in year 10 if they choose not to complete their senior years and test for university entry. If a student finishes in year 10, they get a Record of School Achievement; if they finish senior studies, they get a certificate of education depending on which state they're in:
NSW - Higher School Certificate (HSC)
VIC - Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
QLD - Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA)
SA - South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
WA - West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
TAS - Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
ACT - Australian Capital Territory Senior Secondary Certificate (ACT SSC)
NT - Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)
The national curriculum has eight compulsory learning areas, which can be categorized into subjects:
Tumblr media
Then there are a wide range of electives, which vary greatly depending on region, type of school (state-funded vs private/faith-based) etc. Students in years 9 and 10 typically choose three electives. Here is an example of electives available to a school in NSW.
In addition, many schools offer the opportunity to study a vocational (often trade-based) course in preparation for studies after high school, called TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training). Many of these course results in credits toward school outcomes. I guess you could say that TAFE to Australia is like community college to the US.
The school year is broken up into four 'terms', with dates varying between states (see links at end for a list). A typical school day goes from 8:45am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday, with breaks for recess and lunch between period. A 'period' = one class, which typically runs for 40 minutes.
Upon completing senior studies and final exams, students are given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), which they can use to select and be admitted to university. In fact, senior exams have just begun so it's a good time to keep an eye on social media and see how current students are talking about the experience! 'ATAR Day' (when rankings are released) is on December 14, another time to take a look.
Australia also has specialist high schools, such as creative and performing arts schools, intensive English centres (for students with English as a second language), sports schools, and technology schools. All of these must teach the compulsory subjects, but offer the chance to specialize in these areas.
Websites where you can learn more about the Australian curriculum:
Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Australian Schools Directory
Study Australia
ACARA (for statistics)
TVET
ATAR
Hopefully that will help you! I hope you don't mind that I posted this answer but I thought it might be useful to others as well. If you have any other questions, go ahead and ask and i'll do my best!

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cercibis is known primarily from wet lowlands and riverbanks in northern South America
Tumblr media
Physical Description: Cercibis, the Sharp-Tailed Ibis, is a large, black wading bird with the distinctive long pointy snout of the Ibises. It is about 75 to 86 centimeters long, making it about the same length as a small Canada Goose. Their bodies are entirely black in color, and they have long brown legs, reddish faces, and beige beaks. The beaks are very long and downward pointed, like those of most ibises, with long slit-like nostrils extending from the top of the beak down. It has the longest tail of any ibis, which might be the source of its unusual name. The black feathers are tinted green in most locations, and purple on the back, hind neck, wings, and tail. Juveniles aren’t as shiny as the adults.
Diet: The Sharp-Tailed Ibis primarily feeds on small invertebrates, especially insects, earthworms, crustaceans, and snails. They’ve also been found eating small aquatic vertebrates such as amphibians. It is less aquatic than other Ibises in its feeding habits. It’s primary food source is, however, insects, above all other groups.
Behavior: The Sharp-Tailed Ibis forages primarily in small groups, or mated pairs, in open land and tall grass environments, sifting through shallow mud for insects, as well as along the edges of lagoons. They will occasionally forage for insects in shallow water, less than 3 centimeters deep. They walk quickly along the mud and probe deep into the ground looking for prey, using touch to find it in the ground. They don’t particularly mind the mud and can often be found with it dried along their bills. It is mostly active in the morning, unlike other ibises in the region with similar feeding habits.
Tumblr media
By Miguel Jacques, in the Public Domain
The Sharp-Tailed Ibis does migrate some during the wet season, going to higher elevations to escape the flooding of their usual lowland grass habitat. These higher regions remain unflooded and, thus, filled with their preferred foraging areas. Other than that, though, they remain largely sedentary, not migrating over large distances for food. They fly extremely slowly, and low above the ground, only covering short distances. Sometimes they do fly over larger areas to reach roosting and feeding sites, but they are very loud fliers and easily spotted via hearing before they come into sight. They walk very slowly and carefully, and in general aren’t the fastest of animals.
The Sharp-Tailed Ibis is an extremely vocal bird, making loud trumpeting calls that are repeated extensively. While perched, they make similar but shorter calls, as well as quiet low grunts. They also make loud, drawn-out flight calls. The drumming sound of the calls lead to their common name in Spanish being Tarotaro.
This particular ibis breeds during the dry season, from August until February, which is very weird for an ibis as most breed during the wet season. They breed in forests in monogamous pairs, and egg laying occurs in August and September. The young will stay with their parents all the way through the end of the dry season. Courtship behavior isn’t known, but it seems that preening each other is a part of it, and they also preen their offspring.
Ecosystem: The Sharp-Tailed Ibis mainly lives in lowland wetland habitats as well as along lagoons and in tall grass environments. They do migrate a little back and forth from higher elevations to lower elevations depending on wetland flooding. They are primarily preyed upon by the Black-Collared Hawk, which will pursue these ibises over flooded marshes which often leads to the ibis actually moving fast for once.
Other: This ibis has never been kept in captivity, nor imported out of South America. Despite its smaller habitat, it is an extremely stable bird and does not seem to be in danger of extinction.

What Is Casino Nsw Postcode
Tumblr media
Australian postcodes have four digits; many envelopes for posting within Australia show this.
Casino Nsw Postcode
Mosman Nsw Postcode
Jan 11, 2019  2469 postcode in New South Wales (near Lismore) with map, local transport and hotel information and nearby attractions. Postcode 2469 - New South Wales (near Lismore) - Postcodes. SEIFA 2016 by NT, ACT and Other Territories SA1. SEIFA by State Suburb Code (SSC).
Postcodes are used in Australia to more efficiently sort and route mail within the Australian postal system. Postcodes in Australia have four digits and are placed at the end of the Australian address. Postcodes were introduced in Australia in 1967 by the Postmaster-General's Department and are now managed by Australia Post, and are published in booklets available from post offices or online from the Australia Post website.
Australian envelopes and postcards often have four square boxes printed in orange at the bottom right for the postcode. These are used when addressing mail by hand for Australian delivery.
4Allocation
History[edit]
Postcodes were introduced in Australia in 1967 by the Postmaster-General's Department (PMG) to replace earlier postal sorting systems, such as Melbourne's letter and number codes (e.g., N3, E5) and a similar system then used in rural and regional New South Wales. The introduction of the postcodes coincided with the introduction of a large-scale mechanical mail sorting system in Australia,[1] starting with the Sydney GPO.
By 1968, 75% of mail was using postcodes, and in the same year post office preferred-size envelopes were introduced,[1] which came to be referred to as “standard envelopes”.
Postcode squares were introduced in June 1990[2] to enable Australia Post to use optical character recognition (OCR) software in its mail sorting machines to automatically and more quickly sort mail by postcodes.
Format[edit]
Australian postcodes consist of four digits (three in the Northern Territory [3]), and are written after the name of the city, suburb, or town, and the state or territory:
Mr John Smith
100 Citizen Road
BLACKTOWN NSW 2148
When writing an address by hand, and a row of four boxes is pre-printed on the lower right hand corner of an envelope, the postcode may be written in the boxes.
If addressing a letter from outside Australia, the postcode is recorded before 'Australia'.
Geography[edit]
Australian postcodes are sorting information. They are often linked with one area (e.g. 6160 belongs only to Fremantle, Western Australia). Due to post code rationalisation, they can be quite complex, especially in country areas (e.g. 2570 belongs to twenty-two towns and suburbs around Camden, New South Wales). The south-western Victoria 3221 postcode of the Geelong Mail Centre also includes twenty places around Geelong with very few people. This means that mail for these places is not fully sorted until it gets to Geelong.[citation needed] Some postcodes cover large populations (e.g., postcode 4350 serving some 100,000 people in Toowoomba and the surrounding area), while other postcodes have much smaller populations, even in urban areas. Australian postcodes range from 0200 for the Australian National University (now 2601) to 9944 for Cannonvale, Queensland.
Some towns and suburbs have two postcodes — one for street deliveries and another for post office boxes. For example, a street address in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta would be written like this:
Mr John Smith
99 George Street
PARRAMATTA NSW 2150
But mail sent to a PO Box in Parramatta would be addressed:
Mr John Smith
PO Box 99
PARRAMATTA NSW 2124
Many large businesses, government departments and other institutions receiving high volumes of mail had their own postcode as a Large Volume Receiver (LVR), e.g. the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital has the postcode 4029, the Australian National University had the postcode 0200. More postcode ranges were made available for LVRs in the 1990s. Australia Post has been progressively discontinuing the LVR programme since 2006.[citation needed]
Allocation[edit]
Australian states and territories[edit]
The first one or two numbers usually show the state or territory that the postcode belongs to

Sometimes near the state and territory borders, Australia Post finds it easier to send mail through a nearby post office that is across the border:

Some of the postcodes above may cover two or more states. For example, postcode 2620 covers both a locality in NSW (Gundaroo) as well as a locality in the ACT (Hume), and postcode 0872 covers a number of localities across WA, SA, NT and QLD.
Three locations (Mingoola[4], Mungindi[5] and Texas[6]) straddle the NSW-Queensland border (so same town name and postcode on both sides).
Jervis Bay Territory, once an exclave of the ACT but now a separate territory, is geographically located on the coast of NSW. It is just south of the towns of Vincentia and Huskisson, with which it shares a postcode. Mail to the Jervis Bay Territory is still addressed to the ACT.
The numbers used to show the state on each radio callsign in Australia are the same number as the first number for postcodes in that state, e.g. 2xx in New South Wales, 3xx in Victoria, etc. Radio callsigns pre-date postcodes in Australia by more than forty years.
External territories[edit]
Australia's external territories are also included in Australia Post's postcode system. While these territories do not belong to any state, they are addressed as such for mail sorting:
External territoryPostal statePostcodeNorfolk IslandNSW2899Christmas IslandWA6798Cocos (Keeling) IslandsWA6799
Three scientific bases in Antarctica operated by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions share a postcode with the isolated sub-Antarctic island of Macquarie Island (part of Tasmania):
Antarctic basePostal statePostcodeCasey StationTAS7151Davis StationTAS7151Mawson StationTAS7151
State and territory capital cities[edit]
Each state's capital city ends with three zeroes, while territorial capital cities end with two zeroes. Capital city postcodes were the lowest postcodes in their state or territory range, before new ranges for LVRs and PO Boxes were made available. The last number can usually be changed from '0' to '1' to get the postcode for General Post Office boxes in any capital city (though Perth now uses a different range of postcodes for its GPO Boxes):
CityState/TerritoryStreet AddressGPO Box AddressSydneyNSW20002001CanberraACT26002601MelbourneVIC30003001BrisbaneQLD40004001AdelaideSA50005001PerthWA60006001HobartTAS70007001DarwinNT08000801
Allocation within states[edit]
While the first number of a postcode usually shows the state or territory, the second number usually shows a region within the state. However, postcodes with the same second number are not always next to each other. As an example, postcodes in the range 2200–2299 are split between the southern suburbs of Sydney and the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie regions of New South Wales.
Postcodes with a second number of '0' or '1' are almost always located within the metropolitan area of the state's capital city. Postcodes with higher second numbers are usually located in rural and regional areas. Common exceptions are where towns were rural when postcodes were first introduced in 1967, but have since been suburbanised and incorporated into metropolitan areas, e.g. Penrith, New South Wales has the postcode 2750 and Petrie, Queensland has the postcode 4502.
Within each region with the same second number, postcodes usually get bigger the further one travels from the state's capital city along major highways and railways. For instance, heading north on the North Coast railway in New South Wales away from Sydney:
TownPostcodeDistance from Central StationDungog2420245 km (152 mi)Taree2430378 km (235 mi)Kempsey2440503 km (313 mi)Coffs Harbour2450607 km (377 mi)Grafton2460695 km (432 mi)Casino2470805 km (500 mi)
Major towns and cities[edit]
Major towns and cities tend to have '0' as the last number or last two numbers, e.g. Rockhampton, Queensland has the postcode 4700 and Ballarat, Victoria has the postcode 3350. There are exceptions; the major town of Ipswich, Queensland has the postcode 4305, while Goodna, a relatively unimportant suburb of Ipswich, is allocated 4300.
Postcode squares[edit]
Australia Post prefers envelopes sold in Australia to have four boxes in the bottom right corner of the front of the envelope. Entering the postcode in these boxes or squares, which Australia Post calls postcode squares, enables Australia Post to use optical character recognition (OCR) software in its mail sorting machines to automatically and more quickly sort mail into postcodes, which also embeds routing information. Postcode squares were introduced in June 1990.[2]
Australia Post says that postcode squares should not be used for machine-addressed mail, or mail going overseas.
Other uses[edit]
Many other organisations now use postcodes. Insurance companies often use postcodes when working out the cost of car and house insurance. The NSW Ministry of Transport uses postcodes to give specific numbers for each bus stop in Greater Sydney. The stop number is five to seven numbers: the first four are the postcode, and the others show the bus stop (sometimes written with a space in between, e.g. '2000 108').
Many companies that produce metropolitan street maps also list the postcodes for each suburb, both in indexes and on the maps themselves. Spatial representation of postcodes is also very popular in defining sales and franchise territories.
Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Taxation Office and many other Federal and State government organisations publish a variety of statistics by postcode which extends the use Australia Post four digit code to many business and social planning related activities.
There is an inherent problem with spatial representation of postcodes since areas referenced to a specific postal code tend to change over time, as new postcodes are added or existing ones are split by Australia Post for operational purposes.[7]
Some mail generating software can automatically sort outward mail by postcode before it is generated. This pre-sort of mail into postcode order eliminates the need for it to be sorted manually or using mail sorting machines.
Mechanised sorting[edit]
To improve mechanised sorting, each address now has a sorting number which is printed on the letter as an orange-coloured barcode. This number might be 12 numbers long. This system enables the post office to place items in delivery order.Companies can also use Rapid Addressing Tool(RATS) to print Customer Addressed Barcodes, which are printed above the address.Every Delivery Point in Australia (DPID) has its own number.Barcode Sorter (BCS) machines sort and sequence letters up to C5 size. MARS sequences letters up to C5 articles. Flat multi-level OCR (FMOCR) reads, imprints and sorts C5- to A3-size articles.

Farm Salmon Companies Doing Deals
September 26, 2019 (Tokyo, Japan) - Who knew there was a fish farmer magazine? Not me until I started my journey with salmon at Kamchatkasalmon blog (tumblr). Salmon have always fascinated me having watched my friend’s father catch a huge steelhead (trout that thinks it’s a salmon) back many years ago on a tributary of the Colombia River. That was the first time I saw a fish that big. I am not a fan of farmed salmon but instead would like to keep track of the industry after studying the biologist Alexander Morton’s work on the farmed salmon in Canada and the havoc farmed salmon have had on the ecosystems in the Pacific Northeast region of Canada. Wouldn’t it be useful for people who eat farmed salmon know where the salmon come from and how they are cared for before being sold on the market?

THE Faroese salmon farmer Bakkafrost has bought a majority share in the Scottish Salmon Company (SSC), it was announced this afternoon.
Bakkafrost acquired 68.6 per cent of SSC from Northern Link, ending much speculation in the industry after the company was put up for sale in July.
Listed on the Olso Stock Exchange seafood index, SSC was acquired for £517 million, according to a statement on the Oslo Bors website.
Scottish Salmon Company CEO Craig Anderson said: ‘I’m proud of the way the SSC team has conducted itself under my tenure, and they have all contributed to building a highly successful business that has ultimately become a compelling investment opportunity for Bakkafrost.
‘The management team will now work closely with the new owners of the business to understand its strategic vision and implications for all SSC stakeholders.’
Edinburgh headquartered SSC produced 29,913 tonnes of salmon in 2018, and 18,463 tonnes in the first half of this year.
The company, which farms on the west coast of Scotland and the Hebrides, generated an EBITDA of £56.7 million in 2018 and £35.7 million in H1 this year. Exports accounted for 65 per cent of sales.
Regin Jacobsen, CEO of Bakkafrost, said: ‘Bakkafrost’s journey has been characterised by delivering industry leading growth and profitability combined with a focus on shareholder value creation.

Lingering Sea Ice on Hudson Bay
Roughly 20,000 years ago, during the peak of the last Ice Age, the area that is now Hudson Bay sat beneath a layer of ice thousands of feet thick. As the climate warmed, the Laurentide Ice Sheet thinned and glacial lakes in Canada’s interior merged with the Arctic Ocean to form the large inland bay. It is now a haven for polar bears, whales, orcas, walruses, seals, and other wildlife.
Shallow and surrounded by land, Hudson Bay freezes over completely in the winter but thaws for periods in the summer. Usually all of the sea ice is gone by August, and the bay begins to freeze over in October or November. In between, as the sea ice is breaking up, winds and currents cause flotillas of pack ice to cluster in certain parts of the bay.
That is what was happening on June 29, 2017, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image. (It is a mosaic, composed from multiple satellite passes over the region.) Note how much of the sea ice is drifting along the western coastline.
One of the most noticeable features in the image is the Belcher Islands, a curved set of islands in the southeastern part of the bay that is rich with hunting and fishing grounds for the Inuit communities who live on them. We can also see the D-shaped Akimiski Island, which is to the south in James Bay. The island has no permanent human residents, but it is the site of a sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds each year.
The rhythms of sea ice play a central role in the lives of the animals of Hudson Bay, particularly polar bears. When the bay is topped with ice, polar bears head out to hunt for seals and other prey. When the ice melts in the summer, the bears swim to shore, where they fast until sea ice returns.
University of Alberta scientist Andrew Derocher is part of a group that monitors Hudson Bay polar bear populations with information gleaned from tagged bears and GPS satellites. Via email, he offered an update on sea ice conditions and polar bear populations in late June, around the time that this image was acquired.
“The sea ice melt was well advanced by June 29, but polar bears were still hunting along the remanent ice lingering along the western part of the bay. Bears farther south and in James Bay were already moving to land,” he said. “The break-up this spring was a bit unusual, and the bears in western Hudson Bay responded by remaining offshore longer than normal. We typically expect the bears to come ashore about three weeks after the Bay reaches 50 percent ice cover, but the bears we were tracking found patches of ice that worked for them.”
Ice conditions are closely watched by researchers who study polar bears. Most experts think that the retreat in Arctic sea ice cover in recent decades puts these bear populations at risk. While populations have been stable in the northern part of the Hudson Bay, bears in the western part have seen populations decline by 30 percent over the past decade. “Sea ice loss is simply habitat loss for polar bears,” said Derocher. “Once the ice-free period is too long, then an area can no longer support a viable population of polar bears.”

The City School
The City School (abbreviated as TCS) is one of the largest private English medium school systems in Pakistan which operates more than 150 schools in 42 cities across Pakistan. It offers preschool, primary education, secondary education and preparation for local SSC and the international GCE. Most of its students opt to take the international GCE O and AS/A Level examinations organized by the CIE of UCLES. It also has established international projects in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Canada, Philippines and Malaysia. The City School and its subsidiaries are usually attended by the children of the most influential, elitist, and affluent families of Pakistan.
It is one of the oldest and most well reputed private school in Pakistan.
The head office of The City School is located in Lahore, administering the system through four main regional offices: Southern Regional Office (SRO), which caters to Sindh (only Karachi) and Balochistan; Central Regional Office (CRO) Lahore, which oversees 80% of Southern Punjab; Northern Regional Office (NRO), which looks after the rest of Northern Pakistan; and Mehran Regional Office (MRO), which caters to interior Sindh (Sukkur, Larkana and Hyderabad).[1]
The City School system, in collaboration with various other national institutions, formed The City APIIT. Established in 1978, the school's courses are modeled on those of British schools.
