My top 5 favourite BL first kisses
I qualify a good tv kiss based on three things, believability, physicality and consent. So the kiss has to be more than just a press of lips, no dead fish lips please. If the actors are clearly uncomfortable or cringing away, yeah, no don’t do that. And if the characters are aware of the kiss, no drunk, stoned, dub-con, surprised, shocked kisses plz. With that being said, these are my (current) favourite first kisses in BLs.
Note: I clearly haven’t watched every BL made, so if you like a first kiss better, cool, lemme know the series and I’ll probably check it out ;)
1 - Sean x White (Not Me)
OffGun has some pretty decent kisses in their history together, and some lousy ones too (looking at you PickRome’s first kiss), but SeanWhite are probably the characters with the best kisses of OffGun’s combined careers. Sean and White’s first kiss is basically perfect, plus the lighting and set up of the location was gorgeous, seriously, the setting sun between their faces!? Ugh, stop!
2 - Pat x Pran (Bad Buddy)
A classic rooftop BL kiss, but damn if OhmNanon didn’t throw their whole ass selves into that kiss. The desperation, the tears, the visual heartache on Pran’s face as he finally got what he’d wanted for so long only to know he couldn’t/shouldn’t have it. It was so good, usually first kisses aren’t bittersweet but this one was and it was beautiful.
3 - Gene x Sib (Lovely Writer)
I love a good ‘practice kiss’ in a show, Kao played Sib wanting to jump Gene’s bones constantly really well, they could’ve been a pretty believable high heat couple had the script called for it. I like how shy Gene is as first before really leaning into it, how it fuels his story and writing, cause hey, a good first kiss should stay in your mind for at least a little while, right?
4 - Nure and Syn (Cutie Pie)
Should the second secondary couple have the best first kiss in a series? No, probably not. But do they in Cutie Pie? Yes, they do. Lian and Kuea’s first kiss was drunken and awkward while MaxNat has kissed so many times at this point that all their characters ‘first kiss’ seems like their 100th kiss. But Nure and Syn’s first (and only) on screen kiss was damn near perfect, also Syn going in for a second kiss only to be stopped by his gawking friends was too adorable.
5 - Dean and Pharm (Until We Meet Again)
While I’ll admit not my favourite first kiss, it is iconic as hell. The direction and lighting, the puppy dog look of affection on Dean’s face, the red thread, really it was a great scene. My one gripe has always been the slightly awkward expression on Pharm’s face, he didn’t necessarily look like he knew what the hell was going on even though he was clearly an active participant in the kiss. I always assumed it was an acting choice on Fluke’s part due to Pharm’s shy reserved personality or the residual embarrassment Pharm was supposed to be feeling from Dean seeing what he had told Alex, that being said, it was still a damn good first kiss.

What a painful conversation over dinner.
Wow.
Lovely Writer is really doing so good at having these honest moments of what it's like to be queer in a family of people who either don't understand or disagree with your queerness.
Sitting and listening to people mock your life, mock your identity, mock the people you care about and how you care about them, listening to the people you love hate who you are without knowing who you are.
Or, even worse, when they know who you are and still hate it, still mock it, still let you know that you will never be good enough as you are because who you are is not acceptable.
Gene has always suspected that he could not be out to his family. But I think Nubsib truly believed he would be accepted. He truly thought that the people who loved him would be happy for him.
And then Gene finally comes out. He finally speaks a truth he never thought he would speak. Because he knew he would be rejected, he knew his father would never accept him as he is. But he comes out because he loves Nubsib. Because he sees a future for himself he never considered. And it hurts, it hurts so much, it rips his heart in two.
But he does it out of love.
Love for Nubsib.
And love for the truth.
This is such an honest episode, so heartbreaking and overpowering and true in all the ways that hurt.
Jap didn't even dare to stand up for Gene when he was still in the room. He didn't say a word until he was gone.
Gene doesn't even know he has support outside of Nubsib.
And right now, they're both alone.

Lovely Writer - A Great Beginning, A Disappointing Ending
(because i just remembered that i’d written this post but had forgotten to post this oops. anyway enjoy or not.)
Ever since I watched its' official trailer in 2020, Lovely Writer was one of the BL drama that I had been looking forward to in 2021 (besides ITSAY Part 2 ofc). The drama piqued my interest because of the concept that the trailer suggested it would be exploring. After watching a few BL dramas, I had been having thoughts and questions on the BL industry, how the artists dealt with their over-obsessive fans, the pressure to maintain the image constructed by the company, and their personal life. We all know that not everyone playing in a BL drama is queer, and with the Asian countries still needing a huge stride in this matter, I wanted to know how both the straight actors and the queer actors felt, what their families thought of this, the dark side of the industry, and so on.
Let me start on a positive note. The first four episodes were enjoyable. The aesthetic was superb and the drama looked promising. I also liked how throughout the series, asking for consent was constant. The series did not shy away from showing how the BL industry view and choose their actors based on how masculine and feminine they looked, how Nubsib's and Gene's mother were BL fans but were hesitant to accept their sons who were gay, how Bua pressured Gene to include as many NC scenes as possible, and how some fans obsessiveness can affect an actor's life and the people around them.
However as the series progressed, the plot-line kept on falling flat. The concept that we had been promised felt lacking like it needed to be explored more instead of just brushing through it. Of course, the drama did present us with these heavy topics, however, the production team seems to have felt overwhelmed because the drama inclined more towards rom-com.
There are also plotlines and characters that make no sense to me. For instance, I don't understand why Nubsib decides to hide his true identity. I would've understood if they had a rift when they were small that would discourage Gene to take in Nubsib, but that was not the case. Nubsib had no reason whatsoever; Gene would've happily taken him in. And where the hell did Mork disappear? I believe the last time we saw him was when Aoey and Mork had dinner in Aoey's house. We do see him here and there but his presence is nothing of significance to the story. Tum and Tiffy had an interesting romance plot but that too sizzled out too quick.
As for the acting, it was good. Up and Kao worked well with what they were given, however maybe because of the lacking script itself, the acting felt fine. Bruce did a great job as Aoey because I couldn't stop cursing at his character whenever he came on the screen. Too bad, they didn't explore this character more. His background story seemed very interesting. Truthfully, it felt like the series focused and relied more on the actors' good looks rather than focusing on the dialogues and storyline.
The last episode felt unnecessary and dragged out tbh. The fairytale act was cute however it felt like they were just trying to fill in. It would've been better if they'd added them as a bonus scene. Their reuniting scene was lackluster. Gene was in such a bad condition after their breakup and they were finally meeting after 4 months. I think any lovers would be more than ecstatic to finally meet their significant other. But Gene gave off more like, oh you're here? feeling.
Despite their generic and cliché characters, the drama does start promising, however, the use of silly sound effects may tick some people off. I'm just so disappointed and sad at this missed opportunity which could've made this one the greatest BL dramas. Oh well, a small step is also a step nonetheless.

Gene being the literal cutest drunk of all time in a parking garage and Nubsib being so in love with him it almost hurts but still staying a gentleman which just also shows you how low the bar is for BL men. Thank you, Nubsib!
