The David - Now To You (1968)
This short lived L.A. pop group is often described as a more rocking Left Banke, mostly because of their ornate string arrangements (by Gene Page). I don't really hear the comparisons, as the Left Banke are much more baroque, but I do like this song.

You're going solo and you escape your group? Surprisingly, some managed to achieve that, when they ended up being more successful than they were in their band. The 80's had many cases like these, such as Phil Collins, Peter Cetera and Lionel Richie. However, did you notice something similar about the three? You are correct, they all became mocked later on for being schmaltzy in the work they did on their own, yet I wouldn't be that critical. Lionel Richie merely continued how he saw his work in Commodores. We mustn't forget – the biggest hits he had with the collective belong to the category of ballads. Of course, he considered them to be his bread and butter. The 80's confirmed this hunch of his with many listens.

Conductor-arranger Gene Page introduced Marvin to Jewel Price, a black woman with whom Marvin would become extremely close. Nearly twenty years Gaye's senior, Mrs. Price was a real estate agent. Marvin found her effusive, energetic personality both earthy and charming. A woman with connections to millionaires throughout southern California, she'd sold homes to stars such as Nat Cole, Art Tatum, and Earl Bostic. A passionate music lover, Jewel had an almost mystical power of persuasion over Gaye. 'Mrs. Price could get him to do things other people - even I - couldn't,' said Marvin's mother. 'Get her to tell you about Marvin.'
'I loved him,' Jewel explained enthusiastically as we sat in her spacious Los Angeles home, "and he loved me. He said he'd never met anyone like me before. I treated Marvin like a king, because that's what he was. I'd send him flowers, buy him candy - that kind of thing. He appreciated my thoughtfulness and would return the favors.'
Was the relationship sexual?
'Honey, please! Once he playfully suggested something, but I said to him, I said, 'Marvin, I'm a Christian lady with Christian morals. We're friends and nothing more.' No, Marvin was always a perfect gentleman with me.'
She added, 'He trusted me. In fact, he had me take Anna and her sister Gwen around looking for homes. That was fun for a few hours, but I couldn't keep up with those ladies. They never stopped partying. Marvin also had me looking for houses for him. He never bought one, though I did find him a three-acre place to rent in Palm Springs for awhile. He took me down there all the time. Meanwhile, I'd take him to Malibu where we'd visit my rich friends, sit by the beach, and look at the ocean. With me, Marvin could relax and be himself. When he needed something done, I'd find a way to do it.
I was forceful with Marvin. I told him when he was doing something wrong, and I wasn't afraid to scold him. He respected that. In fact, he put me on a pedestal. He treated me like a queen. I love Mrs. Gay, but she was never firm or frank enough with Marvin. He was so good to her, she was afraid of angering him.
Marvin confided in me when he started having problems with Jan, and that broke my heart. You see, he loved that girl heavily and strongly. But she had a very strange and powerful effect on him. She controlled him. After talking to Jan on the phone, he might spend the next three hours staring into space, looking so lost and sad. I'd say, 'Marvin, what is it?' and he wouldn't even reply. His moods changed minute to minute, and Jan could change him quicker than anyone. He was such a beautiful man, but so unstable.'

I know I talk about mdzs modern AUs a lot, but it's just somehow become a fascinating adaptation process to me, all these people making their personal calls about the nature of reality.
And a thing I keep coming back to is all the people who deliberately decide to give modern!wwx Mo Xuanyu's build.
To preserve the strength contrast that's leveraged for horny, which like, yeah that's fair, horny is an acceptable reason to make a story choice. I respect that, sometimes grudgingly.
But as a result of noticing this being done, oftentimes it seems without any reflection about why, I've developed this minor obsession with the fact that wwx in his own body at its adult height was fractionally shorter than lwj.
And this was the height he reached after a multi-year period in childhood living on scrounged garbage, plus the three months starving in the mass grave toward the end of his growth period.
Meaning that by all normal logic, a modern AU wwx who did not experience these periods of intense privation--which is most of them; it's quite rare for children to experience that particular form of total neglect in modern developed nations and modernAU!wwx's life ruining circumstances only occasionally involve intense physical torment--is going to be significantly taller as an adult.
Like. Add a few inches on there.
Where are all my adequately nourished six-foot-four Wei Wuxians???

We have noticed with The Miracles that some bands can replace their players without many problems this sort of an event could have caused. Sure, we could say the vocal groups, such as the mentioned Miracles and The Temptations, can do this easily thanks to them basically being dependent on their collectiveness. While each of their members gets a chance to shine, they must also be good within the format they have. Thus, the Temptations' first LP after the departure of David Ruffin didn't cause them to lose any step, they actually did a collaborative album with the Supremes, which meant the departure of one of their most famous singers got buttressed by this. Still, one does think Mr. Ruffin would mesh well in here, yet the ending still sounds fine without him.
