genderswapped Andreil makes so much sense because they both have such feral lesbian energy, and I've seen pretty consistently that fem!Andrew would be called Andrea but fem!Neil's name tends to vary - for your consideration:

Assuming the fem version of Nathaniel is like Natalie or Natalia, she would never be Nat because Neil isn't Nat or Nate. Nathan could be Natalie and Neil could be Natalia, which means that fem!Neil would actually be Lia.

You’re a paradox, Andrea had whispered. You perform so well in the lime-light, and shy away from any attention given to you. 

Well, now her blood-thirsty mother was dead. Rie was the last obstacle between her and a real future. 

Rie’s music began: Neala had heard it too many times. Aurora’s solo in the third act of Sleeping Beauty: One of the most difficult variations to perfect. No one could deny that Rie was a prodigal dancer: Her turn-out was insane, her strength unparalleled, her fluidity translating into every moment. 

Neala hated her guts. 

Kayleigh watched with a clenched jaw, hatred in her eyes. Neala had seen her, lying on the floor of the studio, staring at her foot. The reconstruction had taken months to heal: The scars would inhibit movement forever. She would never get over what Rie did to her. 

Neala watched it click in Kayleigh’s mind. She whirled around, looking to Diana. “I need eyeliner and concealer.” 

Andrea looked up, vaguely interested. Neala’s heart throbbed with excitement. 

She drew with a shaky hand, covering the two completely before drawing a shaky one. She looked into Diana’s little hand mirror, satisfied.

The music had stopped, and the bell chimed.

It was Neala’s turn to dance.

Yeah, I was think about this more overnight and had a few thoughts.

Like, i am an abuse survivor with a personality disorder and I project HEAVILY onto andrew minyard. As a nb person, I find it easy to connect to both male and female characters but can you even fathom how annoying it must be to be a girl with a personality disorder or another "scary/violent" mental illness and NEVER have any female characters who are like you and also one of the heroes?

Like when was the last time you saw a portrayal of a female character that was allowed to act out like andrew does (violently, vulgarly, with mania and mood swings when medicated then cold and emotionless when not) and them not being completely demonized in the narrative? And Andrew's while refusal of the Good Survivor narrative? Like fuuuuuck if that isn't the every day experience of a girl or otherwise afab person! We can't do SHIT without being called overemotional, or hormonal, or bitches, or crazy ex girlfriends! And if you're transfeminine magnify that because people put trans/nb women under such a heavy microscope because they want you to perform hyperfemininity to such an impossible degree to even respect you. Like if that was me I'd want to make a genderswap of Andrew to project onto too! (and sidenote: wlw should be allowed to make f/f versions of m/m ships because of the lack of canon f/f content out there)

Plus i feel like we can get into real dangerous territory if we say "hey all genderswaps are evil". Ok, so like. When someone reimagines Romeo and Juliet with both lead characters as women would you call that transphobic? Is reclaiming a classically hetero tale that is heralded as one of the greatest love stories of all time and making it queer-friendly now banned because a cis person says it's transphobic? Because that's a romeo genderswap.

Plus, im assuming the anon in question is using the term genderswap to refer to concept of making a binary character the """opposite""" binary gender, but in the looser context the genderswap idea of reimagining a character in a gender other than their canon one is also inclusive of people making headcanons of a character being nb as well. And i think its clear how allowing trans people whether they identify with the binary or not to safely interact with fic and art of their favorite characters portrayed as being trans or nb is so helpful and validating. In my view restricting that would be more detrimental to the trans community than any random person on the internet making f/f andreil fanfic.

So sure, there are ways a genderswap could be transphobic (like if the point is to mock the transitionary process, make jokes about about a feminized version of a canonically male character at the expense of trans women and gender non-conforming men, or fetishize trans people), but i don't think it's accurate to say all genderswaps are transphobic and shouldn't be allowed in fandom. I think op is right - there are tons of grey areas and areas where genderswaps can walk the line of what is and isn't offensive.

But more and more i see the "genderswaps are all bad because they're transphobic" line brought up by cis people on this site and trans people time and time and again saying "um, no that's not what we're saying, we just want people to think critically about HOW they do genderswaps". I can't assume that the anon here is cis, but I feel like I need to say it anyway because of how consistently of a problem this is: cis people, please let trans people dictate what is and isnt transphobic without speaking over us and rewriting our arguments. We can speak for ourselves.

Anywho, i feel like this person does a way better job of explaining it than i do so if you want to read more on this argument and how genderswaps can actually be very helpful for trans people, esp kids who are questioning their genders i recommend this post.

I totally agree that the concept of “gender bending” is no bueno, like to imply that you’re making the characters the “opposite” gender is tied to like.. so much shitty biological essentialism and transmisogyny.

I don’t know the artist at all so I’ll look into it, I dunno what their intention was, ya know? But the idea of like “It would be cool if this character was a woman” or “what if this was wlw representation instead!” I don’t know! Who’s to say that feminine depictions couldn’t still be men? Or what about nb or trans versions of canon? Let me know what your thoughts are!
