AU where spinster sisters alpha Colleen and omega Eloise travel to Romney Hall together after an invitation from Eloise's pen pal, an alpha by the name of Sir Phillip Crane, to see if he and Eoise suit for marriage.
Colleen doesn't expect much from this trip besides Eloise possibly getting married and mated (wouldn't that be a miracle) and getting a chance to drive Benedict up a wall when they stop at My Cottage. Colleen hasnt done that in a while. She is completely unprepared to go weak in the knees by the intoxicating scent coming from Phillip's spinster omega cousin, Penelope Featherington.
So Eloise might not be the only one who gets married on this trip. So sue her, Colleen can't help that her mate was here too.

It’s very annoying when I want to complain about season 3 part 2 and all the other people who are complaining are just homophobic and racist.

omg. genderbent Colin Bridgerton who doesn’t realize she’s in love with Penelope cause of comphet. Lesbian Penelope who’s had a crush on her best friend’s older sister since they met, but tells herself it’ll never happen cause Caroline Bridgerton is straight as an arrow, and doesn’t see her that way anyways

Elliot Bridgerton AU: Another reason why Penelope had a lack of suitors is also because Elliot and Colin’s constant referral to her as “MY Pen”. … Even the point will the brothers argue over her that “No, she’s MY Pen!” “I had her first!” “I’ve known her longer!”
Thus, many gentleman slowly walking away not wanting to get caught in the crossfire… Lord Debling was the first to take that risk.
You know what, I love this take, because in my Elliot Au, all gentleman stay away from Pen because they are afraid of Elliot, or think she's already spoken for. But in comes Debling, sees that there's nothing going on with Penelope and the anti marriage Bridgerton and decides to shoot his shot with Penelope.
Cue Elliot and Colin both turning away from each other and going like "did you see the audacity? Debling needs to go down"
For me it would be even funnier if Elliot eventually comes around to respecting Debling and gives him his blessing to court his Pen, on the condition that he doesn't get in between their friendship or try to keep Pen from hanging out with bestie boy Elliot. Which Debling doesn't mind.
And Colin feels so betrayed, his brother backstabbing him, over and over, like Brutus and Ceasar! whatever happened to their alliance against Debling? whatever happened to brotherhood? why is Pen not giving him any attention!!
PEEEEN!!!!!!

I didn't enjoy Bridgerton season 3 part 2 as much as I would have liked to. I hate how they just shoved Cressida to the side, gave her a horrible ending, and totally invalidated her friendship with Eloise (side note, I loved their pairing and how Jessica Madsen was a Creloise shipper; Claudia Jessie and Madsen adored each other and it really came out on screen). I adore Creloise.
I would have been okay with Eloise and Penelope continuing to not be friends because that's just life sometimes, you know? In the CBS show Mom, Christie's daughter Violet says that the damage to their relationship is irreparable and she does not want to have a relationship with her. As someone who is no-contact with my family of origin, I really appreciated that representation.
(As an aside, I know that Lady Whistledown wasn't as big of a player in the books, and I think that change really complicated a lot of elements in the series. I wouldn't have been able to forgive Penelope if I were Eloise, and if I had written it, I would have reworked that conflict to have not been as enormous. Eloise had some necessary growth and I think it would have been satisfying to explore that, particularly the Emma motif.)
The Lady Whistledown arc was batshit. I feel sad that the Polin wedding was overshadowed by the fact that Colin and Penelope were still in conflict. If they hadn't had Colin absolutely wreck Penelope's reputation (interrupting Lord Deblin's proposal and then fingering her in her carriage, as well as totally bonking her later that night), then maybe they could have had a more traditional "third-act breakup" (they realize they love each other, begin courting, and then he realizes she's Lady Whistledown and breaks it off) that culminates in the "happily ever after" at the wedding. And then you get the beautiful "perfect breasts" mirror scene.
I hate how they have Francesca immediately lovestruck by Michaela. It really cheapened and invalidated the sweet and "quiet" love that she and John had, which I loved. John should have been the genderbent casting. Then you have the infertility storyline all baked in, and then the Michael storyline continues as planned.
I would like to have seen Kate in traditional Indian garb. I know they had to have her in Bridgerton blue, but Kate had said "I want my child to know that they're a Sharma." It would be a good way for her to show that she's brought her own identity to the Bridgerton family and the viscountess role. They could have Bridgerton-type accessories and motifs in her outfits, but I think she would really shine in bright, saturated colors like orange or gold.
I don't think the Penelope makeover was dramatic enough. I'd liked to have seen her in more luxurious clothing and maybe jewelry. Nicola Coughlan looks amazing in anything, and "red hair with green outfits" is a classic combination (as well as marrying Bridgerton blue with Featherington yellow), but it feels very "florals for spring? Groundbreaking." I know the point is that her clothing was very overwrought before, but I think there could be a balance between understated/quiet luxury and a more obvious "oh, she's evolved/gotten more prosperous" kind of way.

welp. I read 'when he was wicked' aka the franchael book in the bridgerton series... and I have Thoughts. mostly julia quinn writes men truly horribly. literally the saving grace of anthony bridgerton is the actor who plays him. in all the books I've read of quinn's, the guy protagonist shakes the woman he loves by her shoulders or disrespects her massively and is literally described as 'predatory' in the run up to the sex scene!!!! like. I really liked michael up until a point. I never really liked anthony in 'the viscount who loved me' and colin was only marginally more tolerable in 'romancing mr bridgerton'. but michael seemed genuinely charming and a good guy who had a solid reason why he didn't tell frannie about his feelings for her. so it's a real shame that he turns into a bit of a monster when he seduces frannie and basically tries to entrap her into marriage - idk what it is about julia quinn that she just seems allergic to writing decent male characters???
it does make me glad that they genderbent michael for frannie's season in the show. and I can see how they could work the whole infertility plot in too with michaela and frannie - say if frannie gets pregnant and doesn't know it immediately, finds out soon after john dies, and it turns out michaela is also pregnant but by accident (she's still a rake which I think would be interesting as a concept to explore in a female character). frannie miscarries as per the book and michaela has a lot of fears about being a mother - and at the same time there's all this talk about who the earldom will go to next now john is gone. so they somehow pass michaela's child off as frannie's, the earldom doesn't go to the awful debenham side of the family and this whole ordeal brings frannie and michaela closer and they learn to take care of each other while both still mourning, and they both feel like it would be a betrayal of john and likely frannie is in denial about her queerness... all I'm saying, bridgerton writers room, I'm available...

i know you said you haven’t read the books— have you seen the post julia quinn made about michaela?
(spoilers for the books below, disregard if you dont want it spoiled but its relevant to your complaint)
michael stirling was always francesca’s end game love interest in the books, michaela is just genderbent in bridgerton.
the reason she has instant chemistry with francesca is purely to signal future events to people who dont read the books and mitigate the amount of people who would claim their romance “came out of nowhere” when it was always planned.
in julia quinns post, she talks about how important it is to her that john and francescas love is real and feels real to the viewers, because it was an important part of francesca and michaels dynamic in the book.
finding someone attractive doesnt negate an honest love connection with someone, and neither does (eventually) moving on. does violets budding romance with marcus cheapen the love she had for her late husband? sometimes sweet things dont last forever, that doesnt make them less sweet.
Hey,
I don't mind spoilers at all which is why I'm responding.
Yes, I understand that Michael was always going to be Francesca's endgame. I'd say as someone who was introduced to Bridgerton and any content related to such through the show, social media makes it almost inevitable that you would find out about certain book details without needing to read the actual series (such as endgame couples, differences in the books vs show etc.).
The existence of Michael as a character, I have no problem with, I'm not out here petitioning to make John her endgame. I think it follows the pattern seen in Bridgerton (the show, not sure about the books) of how each sibling almost has to have one romantic interest before they end up with their endgame. My post was more centred on why the show couldn't focus on Francesca and John's relationship first in this season before moving on in Francesca's actual season or maybe the season beforehand.
I've seen it said that the audience needs visual cues as a suggestion of what's to come, but was that done with the other Bridgertons? Colin and Penelope aside with their friends to lovers arc, I don't think we needed much reassuring (in the form of that character popping up beforehand) to know that Kate was coming in as Anthony's love interest despite his spending the whole of season one with the opera singer romantically. Despite all the hookups and situations Benedict has found himself in over the seasons, I'd say most people still expect him to end up with Sophie? or someone that'll be his endgame?
I think it was just how it looked overall. That in regards to John and Francesca, they spend season 3 building up this narrative of how a quiet and easy love can be just as meaningful as any other type of love or at least equal to the one Violet has always had in mind for her children. Then fast forward to them getting married and after the kiss Francesca looks either confused or disappointed. When she's introduced to Michaela later on she has that moment of forgetting her words completely and that instant attraction you mentioned.

I've been thinking about the Jennys (genderbent vers.) and something that I thought would be funny is if they cannot stand each other. They just don't click like how the bois did and that's ok
(Though how'd that affect their relationships with others is making me feral. Would Ghost get along with her world's version of Spooker? Or Colin? What about Toast? Out-there headcanon is that her and genderbent Colin are besties that met when she first joined P.I.E)
idk i think they should make out /j
im kidding but i feel like Jenny Ghost would get along better with their world's Spooker i feel for personal reasons. while Jenny Ghost and Colon would probably be about the same in canon.
same with Jenny Toast and their other intern/employees.
i like to think that just because they're girls wouldn't change much except for a minor things. B)
like since Jenny Ghost would have less pressure to uphold masc things since she's a girl maybe she's be less of an ass and more in tune with her feelings but also aBSOLUTELY takes no shit. (from men and women alike.) if that makes sense :P

You know what @thekatebridgerton post about trophy husband Colin had me thinking about the polleen universe and had Colin been Colleen it wouldn't matter what gender Penelope was Anthony would have happily given her anything in the negotiations just to get that gremlin out of his hair.
Imagine Anthony finds out Colleen and Penelope are secretly married and he drags Penelope to his office because they need negotiate! He will have not have anyone saying he didn't properly compensate Penelope for taking Colleen.

Day 18 - swap ! the thing suggests "swap between" but. i couldn't think of a good way to swap them. so. genderswap !!! yippee !! they also swapped main colors i suppose. that part wasn't planned it just came with their gender expression. i also drew them with shorter hair bc i remembered that they had long hair as men bc it's gnc. and also it's hot. additionally sarah is shorter bc john was meant to be average height. and 5'9? greater than the average woman. i also decided to go with full renames from off the top of my head instead of genderbent names since i wanted to go with how i would've named them if they were originally women. i love them <3
(prompt list) (mini rants on designs below !)
since john was meant to be an average everyman in america i thought about that for designing sarah. went with a cardigan instead of a hoodie to make it feel a bit different. cardigans feel gentler, in a way. the longer skirt is bc john was intended to be modestly dressed with his baggy ass clothes and also just like. sarah would be raised on skirts and dresses for sure. especially long skirts. since she grew up religious. and i gave her flats bc they're easy to draw. also i'd like to clear up that i am impartial to women with shorter hair. i gave them that for the gnc element. and for the sake of being different. i hope they look hot to someone though
colin. colin's gender expression has always been very gay. very flashy and flamboyant. very confident man. i aspire to have his confidence. anyway i made lesley a bit butch. in my mind mostly. she would wear a biker jacket. a lot of it is in her personality, but i did give her skull earrings instead of hearts. maybe i should rethink her design a bit but i can't have her going all out in her casual wear bc colin doesn't go all out in his casual wear. so he retains a specific image. maybe i should've given her a jacket instead of a sweater vest though. or like. given her a cool vest. yeah. too late rn though she's stuck masking her gender expression😔 at least i let her stay hairy i should draw colin and lesley in degrees of "all-out" on their gender expression... people need to know how gay these bisexual is
Tumblr media
it WASNT too late actually i lied i just drew this in msp. she's wearing a low cut tank top underneath the dark grey lines were put to differentiate stretch marks and one scar

2023 WRITING REVIEW
I really don't write much but it's the second time @eeverlark tags me in a writing meme (I think) soooo alright lys I'll do it. for you 🫶🏻
1. number of stories posted to ao3: 4, and yes I'm counting the fic I updated in early January because 7 out of 8 chapters were written in 2023
2. number of words posted last year: 49k
3. fandoms i wrote for: only Merlin I'm monogamous 💛
4. pairings: Merwenthur; Merwaine; background Arwen in an Arthur & Merlin fic if that counts
5. stories with the most:
KUDOS || BOOKMARKS: Call It Anything We Want (281 | 48)
COMMENT THREADS: my merwenthur vignettes have 31 threads (excluding the chapter posted in January 2024). makes sense given every chapter is basically a self-contained ficlet
6. work i'm most proud of (and why): every fic I write is simultaneously the best and the worst I've ever written and it remains so until I post a new one.
Honestly though every fic(let) has some things I like and some I think I could've done better.
Having said that, Call It Anything We Want is the first fic I posted on ao3 after a long writing hiatus so. I'm proud of that and of the amount of time I've put into this story as a whole.
7. work i'm least proud of (and why): hmmm see previous answer.
there's a ficlet called The Hunting Trip that I think I could have done better – mainly the conversation Arthur and Merlin have about Uther – but I just wanted to get it done tbh. I do like how it starts though. And Cavall the dog :)
8. share or describe a favorite review you received: I absolutely love any time someone says they liked my characterisation. for example:
your characterization is insane i am so obsessed. its so so good. like. idk how to describe it you just write relationships meshing so well together and not in like. an unrealistically flawless way but in a warm and familiar way. im in awe.
or
I love this story, your writing, this relationship, this dynamic, your details, your characterization, your everything and I’ve been meaning to tell you for a very long time. I’m sorry for not expressing this earlier. Your continuation of the original story was incredibly, believably, wondrously fantastic.
Comments like these give me life 🥺
9. a time when writing was really, really hard: 99% of the time if I'm being honest
10. a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: I wrote a ficlet that was supposed to be magically genderbent!Merlin x Arthur smut but it ended up being fem!Merlin x Gwen instead because Arthur wasn't cooperating
11. a favorite excerpt of your writing:
“Ah, the court sorcerer himself!” Gwaine exclaims, spreading his arms wide, and some wine sloshes out of his goblet and spills on the floor. He claps one hand on Merlin's shoulder. “Congratulations, Master Merlin.” “I told you to stop calling me that.” Gwaine just looks at him. Head to toe, with a grin that does nothing to hide what he's thinking, and must therefore come across as incredibly lewd. “You look good in green,” is all he says. Merlin raises an eyebrow. “You think I look good in anything.” Gwaine leans closer; close enough to purr in Merlin’s ear: “And even better in nothing at all.” Mainly for the pleasure of watching the tips of Merlin’s ears flush pink. — UNWAVERING
12. how did you grow as a writer last year: well I actually wrote something which is a good starting point
13. how do you hope to grow this year: I'd love to write a multi-chapter fic with an actual plot someday. also get better at titling things
14. who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer, beta, cheerleader, etc.): I think all the lovely people that left me some feedback made me push myself a tiny bit harder to keep writing and posting. a special shout-out to @castelled-away for writing whole essays about my merwenthur ficlets, I've loved every single comment 💛
15. anything from your real life show up in your writing last year: nothing apart from my desire to kiss Colin Morgan on the mouth
16. any new wisdom you can share with other writers: sometimes done is better than perfect. just get it done and move on it's fine if it's not a masterpiece. at least that's what I often have to tell myself but also I suspect I have adhd
17. any projects you're looking to starting (or finishing) this year: I would like to finish my Sefa-centric WIP, I wrote like 8k words but I'm not sure where it's going

I loved writing those. The reincarnation verse was also so good, and arghh I should have expanded on the Criminal minds au.
Long Story short, it's really hard to pick which was my favorite au to write in 2022, but the ones I listed above always make me grin like a maniac, even when I'm busy and sleep deprived.

Note
So I know you’re not watching that show anymore but they recently came out with an article about a possible lgbt storyline later. What would you think about a genderbent Michael?
I think based on things that I've heard that
a) that's the most likely thing to happen if that show has a queer Bton (as in, a member of the Bton family)... like.... if I had to bet $$$ RIGHT NOW, that's what I'd say is gonna happen
b) I fully support it
I think that back when the "omg should a Bton be gay" wars were going on when I watched that show, I said that I was down with any one of them being queer, and I stand by that. And I mean... I think that ANY person who's read that show should realize by now: no matter what they do with "your" couple.... the chances of them really adapting the book closely in any way are out the door post s1. S1 was surprisingly close to the book, tbh. S2 significantly less so, and s3 even less, it appears. So like. Even if they adapted WHWW, which is my favorite book in the series... the chances of it being like the book I enjoyed at all are pretty low. With that logic in mind--like, you might as well give any Bton an entirely new love interest. Because if we're being fuckin' real. The Kate from the show doesn't have a lot of deep things in common with the Kate from the books if we never get into the deep things that affected the Kate from the books. Doesn't mean that she isn't a lovable character; she's just not the same, so if you're not gonna quibble with that, why would you quibble with genderbending?
Like. The Kate from the books had an entire traumatic backstory we never got into because the show.... sucks.
The Penelope from the books never ruined an unwed pregnant woman's life because she was jealous about Colin and his interests.
When the text is that different from the adaptation, you might as well genderbend whoever you want. A random guy named Peter who moonlights as Lord Whistledown has about as much in common with book!Penelope as show!Penelope does.
I say that as someone who like... yeah. I do love book!Michael. I actually really like his book, which is saying something as I'm either "meh" on or dislike 6/8 of those books lmao. I DO NOT REMEMBER what happens in books 7-8. Especially book 8. And that doesn't mean they're bad, it just means that those books by and large made little impact on me, and WHWW sticking out does matter. If I thought this show would actually give WHWW a good adaptation, then maybe I'd be like "aww, I wish I got book!Michael". But I ain't gonna get him either way, so do something cool with it and make it wlw if you want.
Do I think the show will do anything cool with a wlw storyline? lol no because the show is kinda rancid, you know?
So the thing about flipping Michael into a female character is that I don't even think you can call it "WHWW but genderbent". Because that storyline can't be genderbent and be that storyline. Michael's guilt isn't only built in him wanting Francesca when John was alive. It's also built in him inheriting John's title, something women in this show's universe can't do. He's "becoming" John in his mind. (He was also a rake, which I think is also difficult for a woman to be in this universe, but much more plausible.) Francesca's plot drivers also surround her infertility and her desire for children--Michael is very conscious of that, and is basically like "so what the fuck, are you only gonna marry me after I get you pregnant?" Francesca can excuse fucking him out of wedlock because it's like "let's see if he gets me pregnant, and if he does, I mUST marry him, oH NOOOOOOES". Francesca marrying Michael without knowing that she's pregnant with his baby is Francesca making a decision she has avoided making throughout the back half of that novel.
If Francesca's husband dies and she's left a wealthy widow... she can just be with his female cousin, tbh. Like. ON THE LOW. But that shit happened and it was much easier for a widow to be with her female partner as "companions" than it would be for a woman who was never married, right? The central tension of Francesca having to choose to be PUBLICLY with someone the way she'd have to be with Michael is gone, because according to the show's own logic, she can only be with a woman on the low. And that's an interesting story in itself, it's just not the same and it doesn't present the same emotional conflicts.
I say all this to argue that if they do that, they're not so much adapting WHWW as they are replacing it. And if people have a problem with that... Like, dude. It's whatever. They weren't gonna give you the WHWW you wanted anyway. I'm sure many will be up in arms.
And like, as someone who's always been pro "put Benedict with a man" (and I still am) I'll totally acknowledge that Sophie's story is dependent on her being a woman. Genderbending Sophie would change her story to an unrecognizable degree, the same way genderbending Michael's would/will his. But like. I think Benedict's book is shitty, and I think WHWW is not shitty. So to me, it always made sense to just totally change the bad book.
I know people are gonna hate that I just said "go ahead and change it because I think it's bad" but. That's my truth lmao. I have no great logical leap over why I would genderbend An Offer From a Gentleman over When He Was Wicked (if I had to choose) aside from "change the book that sucks, keep the book that is good overall the same with some changes because did Michael have to go to India and did we have to talk about an Indian princess being obsessed with him I think not Julia Quinn".
My IDEAL queer Bton would be Eloise because I think that.... not only does she read as a lesbian to me on the show............ her book is like, the worst, and it could actually be genderflipped while retaining its core, unlike Benedict's book or Francesca's. If SP was a widow with two kids and Eloise went to visit this widow friend and fell in love and they stayed in the country.... I mean, it's still different, but I don't think SP's character arc is necessarily as rooted in gender as Sophie's and Michael's are.
And there's a cynical part of me that says that if they do go with Francesca being queer, it's because they know they're gambling on whether or not they'll get renewed beyond s4, and they're making the Queer Bton the one who's kinda new to the audience and will have a b-plot for s3-s4 versus someone the audience knows, who may have a main love story, like Benedict or Eloise. Like. I see this show giving us a sapphic love story in the background for two seasons and being like "GIVE US OUR FLOWERS". I don't see them centering a sapphic love story as a season-leading romance. Dude, I can barely find a good historical romance novel that centers sapphic women lol.
ALL THAT BEING SAID. I support a queer Francesca. I support any queer Bton. Do I think the (online) fandom will? Meh. Do I think they should just get over this idea that the show is adapting their favorites like they would the books anyway? Yes for sure. THIS IS ALL A DIFFERENT THING. It being a different thing isn't why I'm over it, tbh; it being a bad different thing is the issue.

Listened to TMP Episode 1, here's my character headcanons (Appearance)
Alice: Tall, Lanky, mostly a skinny and bony build, pale with blue eyes, long red hair, freckles, and round framed glasses.
Sam: Medium height, dark skin, black hair that's slightly messy or incredibly neat depending on the day, square glasses, and dark brown eyes.
Gwen: Short, pale with freckles, black hair (possibly dyed tips?), nose piercing, your average goth/punk girlie.
Lena: Medium height, black, medium length black hair (usually half up half down), glasses, dark green eyes.
Colin: Tall, short blonde hair, green eyes, best way I can describe him is genderbent Daisy Tonner.
These are just quick summaries I jotted down, but I want to draw them when I can.
