She-Ra | A Fanboy's Tale
The odd story of how I ended up in the She-Ra fandom. Because I would have put money down on that not ever having happened, but here I am.
So, to frame this story - a few things you should know about me.
My (main) job is Professional Adult™ - which is to say, I teach life skills to folk with neurodivergence, physical disability, and mental illness. I love my job. It lets me be a disability advocate. It lets me work with amazing people. It lets me discover, explore, and understand the world a little better every day. It lets me teach things I am very good at and learn things I am not. And it forces me to examine myself a lot.
I don't watch much TV. Or many movies. Anxiety about things. Lack of time. Lack of interest. Even fewer things I watch are cartoons. There are some older cartoons I love, but I don't really watch many cartoons. Not because they're bad or aren't entertaining or I have a prejudice against the form. Just - usually - I'm not exposed to ones I like.
Or they hit on the thing that makes me really wary of TV shows and movies these days. Which is - I love unironically heroic characters. I am so tired of the gray-area, morally compromised characters. I am tired of gritty, the bad guys win, the good guys have to be bad guys to win, the antiheroes, the Walter Whites (I loathe that show. And that character. It's awful.) Game of Thrones and ASOIAF. (Terrible people. Doing terrible things. For terrible reasons.)
I have worked with some families for more than a decade. Close to two decades, in some cases. Parents who needed to learn things to teach their kids. Kids with neurodivergence who needed someone to be able to fight for them at school when the parents didn't know the right code words and the laws. Siblings and niblings and adopted clans have all asked for my help over the years.
One such family has three kids, two parents and a bunch of adopted aunts/uncles. They are amazing people. Supportive. Accepting. Creative. They work hard, play hard, and find joy in ways I never have been able to.
The oldest kid loved Stephen Universe. They wrote fic. Drew fanart.
The oldest kid is autistic. Some social rules - are hard for them. Understanding the vagaries of fandom culture was just as hard. We never did find out what they did wrong (maybe it was their gemsona. Maybe it was a fic pairing. Maybe it was a youtube ramble. We really don't know.) But they did or said something that got a faction of the SU fandom riled up at them.
This is not an indictment of that fandom. I've been in fandom long enough to know that you can't blame all for a few. These few did some real damage, though. Threats. Mockery. Told my student to kill themselves. Slurs. Online stalking. Doxxing. Threatening phone calls. Threatening letters. Glitter bombs. False allegations called into their school. To police. Their home was vandalized. Their cars were vandalized to the point they were totaled.
They had to move. Both parents had to get new jobs. My student did not graduate from their high school. They were home schooled. They did not go to college. They did not get a job. They went into residential treatment for a year and some change. They have not yet recovered.
So when the youngest kid found She-Ra and the Princesses of Power a year or two ago and dove in with a powerful hyperfixation, their mother called me up in a blind panic. She could not go through it again.
She paid me to watch the show. To explore the fandom. To read the fic. To do what I do as a fandom person online.
So I did. To be fair, I was pretty much coasting along at that point. Coming out of a breakup, a health crisis, and COVID. No real new fandoms in years. Poking at a fic here and there. Not active on tumblr anymore. One or two servers. But my skills were there - I knew how to find fandoms. Servers. Fics.
The youngest was thrilled to find out their Mom wasn't going to take their hyperfixation away. They sent me a list of fics to read. Notes on the show. Youtube videos to watch. Articles to read. Blogs to read. Posts to read. Fanart to admire.
I watched the show - and my old fandom heart woke up a bit. The show had great villains. Great characters. An unironically heroic protagonist. A love story. At least, I thought it was a love story. By the time I was through season three, I figured that there was no way they were actually going to go through with Catradora. It was based on popular media properties from my childhood.
(Full disclosure: I loved She-Ra as a kid, more than He-Man. Mostly, because I saw her show first and Skeletor creeped me out. But I loved both and watched both. I love the Dolph Lundgren live action movie and I used to read the He-man and She-Ra comics. So I wasn't uninterested in my new work assignment.)
Then season four hit, and i was devastated. Glimmer had gone the 'dark hero' route. Adora was a sad, lonely mess. And the writers had taken Catra and, in the coldest, most brutal, purposeful, deliberate way taken her apart. Taken everything away from her. When they'd already given her so little. She always lost. Not just the battle or the war, but - herself. Her confidence.
By the time I started season five, I realized Catradora could never happen, because the things the writers would have to do to fix it, redeem them all and not leave me with the normal pyrrhic victory TV shows give these days wouldn't happen. No writers were that brave. No one breaks the cycle that way and gets away with it.
I was wrong.
Glimmer was saved by Catra, who apologized. Who sacrificed herself doing the right thing. Glimmer apologized. Glimmer owned her shit.
You have no idea how important that arc is to me. They took a character who had morally compromised themselves and had that character say: I was wrong. I messed up. I'm sorry.
And mean it. She didn't do it again. She didn't go back to her old ways. She stood her damn ground and stayed a hero. Hells yeah.
Adora - the titular hero of the show, without her magic, without her sword, said: Fuck it. We ball. And she walked right up to the big bad guy with more courage and heart than anyone since Luke Skywalker staring down Palpatine and said: Give me my friend back.
She rescued her arch-enemy. No one would have blamed her for leaving Catra behind with Prime. Catra was the enemy. Catra had broken the universe to get Adora back. Catra had tried to kill Adora and her friends over and over again. Catra had saved Adora as often as she'd tried to hurt her.
She stood before the Emperor of the Known Universe and defied him. She jumped off a cliff after Catra, and then when she stood back up, she had her sword. She had her power. And she kicked ass.
(Best episode. Season 5. Episode 5. Save the Cat.)
Then the writers doubled down and had them save the universe with love - through a kiss. Not only did all of that fit the old show, it was what I have wanted from a show for a long time. Unironic, unabashed, unashamed radical belief that doing the right thing and being a good person matter.
That you don't have to compromise yourself to beat the bad guys. It's when you accept yourself, you deal in radical acceptance, radical forgiveness, and the idea that people can change, grow, get better, become more -
Then you can save the world.
So, of course, I dove into the fic. And I found out where all the fic I'd been craving for ten years had gone. It was in the She-Ra fandom. Epics. One-shots. Love stories. AUs. All of it was right there, and more and more was being posted.
I read the fics my student sent. I joined servers. I read through tropes. Blogs. Posts. Articles. I even made myself watch videos.
And when I went back to that Mom, I told her the truth: there's controversy there, but here always is. There's a fight between ships. There's a lot of pain. A lot of hurt. Because this show touched on some big things - everything from growing up queer to growing up during war and disaster. It gave voices to a lot of things most shows and media won't touch or even look at.
But it's also a fandom full of beautiful people. People finding themselves, people expressing themselves, and people using story to redefine the world just a little bit at a time.
Which is what fandom has always done. When you scrape away the layers of hyperfixation and obsession and naked want for more of what the media gave us, you find people who believe, very strongly, in something the show expressed.
Just like Star Trek, so long ago. (And, not so long ago. I love you, Star Trek Discovery!)
So, I guess with that, discovering the She-Ra fandom turned me into a Professional Fanboy, because I got paid to do what I should have already done.

Alright I want a new intro post (leaving the old one up for archival reasons because I am a nerd)
I'm doing a note thing where you can force me to do shit, some of it is overtly mental-health stuff and some of it is just "make me do shit for funny". You can find that here!
Hello! I'm Alexander, and I go by Xander, Darren, Isabeau (in certain friend circles because yes I am obessesed with ISAT) and honestly whatever! Alex and Abyss are both fine names for me, not my preference but I'm not gonna complain if you use them. My pronouns are he/him or it/its.
I love to draw and write fanfiction! My AO3 is abyssal_author_artist and I've got over 50 fics for a bunch of fandoms as of now.
My interests change constantly and I usually forget to spoiler tag reblogs, but I'm planning on one day going back through my blog and spoiler tagging everything!
Some of my interests include: In Stars and Time (Current favorite) Gravity Falls Undertale/Deltarune Undertale AUs Warrior Cats! Because I'm a nerd! Steven Universe (Gemsona currently underway) Pokemon (Haven't played the most recent gen) Madoka Magica and related medias Soul Eater (I recently remembered my deep love for it lol) OMORI Fire Emblem Three Houses Persona 5 (haven't played Royal, regrettably) Legend of Zelda And many many more!
I'm a fandom nerd through and through, honestly.
I'm opening commissions! Still working on setting up a commissions sheet and everything, but if you see this and you want to purchase something, I've already got prices figured out so just dm me and we'll talk. All my art is under the tag #abyssal art if you want to see what my art is like!
Asks are always on and I reblog a lot of ask games! I'm also always open to being mentioned in reblog chains/games or just posts you want me to see.
My catch-all tag for anything I add a significant amount to is #screaming out of the abyss.

A lot of people have given their own theories and explanations on why some fandoms form around certain source materials and not others. I don't disagree with any of those theories, I just have a small one of my own.
My theory is that certain fandoms form because the source material provides enough props and set pieces to play around with.
I don't mean that literally. Like maybe a set piece is a place, but maybe it's an event, a location, a state of mind characters undergo (like if they go to prison, or they spend a length of time being cursed, or they undergo a catastrophic/emotional event, etc.). And by prop I don't mean an object necessarily, but also an attribute that can be possessed by a character (like a superpower, or a fantasy species, or a title, or a job).
So creativity in fandom is then spurred by playing around with all these props and set pieces, arranging them in different ways in each story. Things like 'what if this character had the prop (for example, what if this person never died and the protagonist didn't inherit their title?)', or 'what if this character went to this set piece instead of this one'. You can arrange all these things in different configuration every time you set the stage for a fic: what if Skyhold was a space station? What if Deep Space Nine was an old-timey Western town?
And a big draw is also for the people who like to make up their own custom props: what superpower would my mutant OC have? What gemsona could I create?
Anyway, yeah, I think this is the draw that certain specific fandoms (not necessarily all of them) have.

Love the gemcyt fics! Do you have your own gemsona or anything of the like?
i do not! i don't usually make sonas because i can't really draw hahahaha
this got me thinking though... i think my gemsona would be a goldstone. it's a type of glittering glass! it's always been a favorite of mine and fun oranges are my favorite color.

An Obsidian’s Duty (conversation)
Homeworld had entertainment facilities all over it's cities. Of course, most had shut down since Era 2 started, but the ones that did survive thrived. The concept was that relaxed and happy gems would make more productive gems. However, these places weren't just for any gem. Only gems close to the Diamonds, or those who were of a magnificent cut, were served here.
And now, X8b was one of those allowed entry.
It had been awhile since she had started the job. White Diamond, or rather, her pearl, had been gracious. They hadn't expected X8b to know her job imminently and had given her have five days to get through the basics. After that she had been expected to perform perfectly. So far, it seemed she was performing well, despite...complications.
She sighed and glanced around once more. The building consisted of several steeped terraces. On each layer there were comfortable chairs you could lie on and tables decorated with reflective glass. At the bottom of the pit, there sat a pool of water, with dark gem like shapes swimming underneath. Occasionally there would be a fountain display, or a platform would rise up and several gems would begin a performance. Up above, on the highest layer, sat three huge chairs, with room for a fourth. That is where the Diamonds would have sat, if they came back to this place.
Only the best for the Homeworld elite.
Perhaps she counted as an elite gem now, but it didn't feel right to say. She was a working class gem for the Diamond's sake. Top Tiers were in another class it seemed. Though, X8b couldn't complain, this view was beautiful.
A hush came over the voices of the crowd. X8b was confused, until she glanced over the railing of the terrace to see a platform rise out of the water and several pearls with it.
"My luminous gems." A gem spoke from out of sight (perhaps a Spinel?), "We are honored to present to you the enchanting voices of our very own...pearls!"
The pearls on the stage began to walk away from the center, platforms rising beneath them as they did. It made the illusion of walking on water very believable. When they stopped, it was like the entire room was holding it's breath.
Then the music started.
She had forgotten how beautiful pearl's voices were.
X8b had never owned a pearl, nor had any desire too, but that was only when she wasn't hearing them sing. Perhaps it would have been worth it to get a pearl as a reward, if only to hear this melody whenever she pleased. It swirled in her mind, allowing her thoughts to disappear.
"Hello."
X8b opened her eyes, glancing up at the gem who had just spoken with her. The other Obsidian was a little taller than she was, her gem located on her chest, and her eyes just a little to round. She looked at the seat across from X8b.
"May I sit?"
"You have permission." X8b nodded.
"Thanks X." The Obsidian sat across from her, a smile on their face.
"It's X8b." She sighed, "though I doubt it matters. How are you doing K70?"
K70 grinned, "Just fine." She pulled out the, admittedly less comfortable chair, and sat down, "Oh my, they weren't kidding when they said this place was magnificent."
"Mh, yes." X8b closed her eyes, listening to the music again, "It's almost everything they said it would be."
"In surprise you managed to get entry! You have to go past the Top Teir's for this kind of treatment!"
X8b felt her weight come crashing back to her, "Ah, yes. I suppose so."
"X8b." K70 frowned at her in disappointment, "Don't tell me you went in here without the proper permission!"
"Do I look like the type of gem to do that?" X8b raised her eyebrow at the other, "Please be sensible, you've known me for my whole existence."
"...so how did you manage to book us?" K70 huffed, "The Top Tiers never let anyone take breaks anymore, since Obsidian production was halted we've all been swamped!" "I'm a Top Teir now." X8b replied nonchalantly, ignoring the feeling of how un-right that sounded, "So technically I'm allowed here whenever I please."
K70 gawked at her. When she managed to close her jaw, she whispered, "Why are you joking around? The X8b I knew never joked!"
"I don't joke."
"No. I don't suppose you do." K70 frowned, "But I still don't believe it. You, a Top Tier?"
"What's so hard to believe about it?" X8b turned to look at the pearl's below, "You said it after I finished my training, I had the potential."
"Oh, well, of course you did, it's just-"
"Just what?"
"...your gem placement." K70 replied softly, "The Diamond's usually like to have someone who matches their gem placement to serve them personally. Yours is...kind of off."
"I know." X8b sighed heavily, now very conscious of the gem on her arm, "I was worried about it as well, but White Diamond doesn't-"
K70 stood up suddenly, "You're White's?!" She interrupted.
X8b startled, nearly jumping backwards, "Y-Yes. She uh, she didn't seem to have a problem with it."
"How did you get that position?!"
"I think it's classified, I'm afraid," X8b wasn't exactly lying, she had been told to keep quiet about the circumstances of her ascension, "but it was approved by the Diamond herself and who am I to question my Diamond?"
K70 shook her head, sitting down again, "I can't believe it. You're completely sure?"
"Her pearl told me."
"Well then, congratulations!"
X8b forced a smile on her face, but if felt sour, "It is appreciated."
"So, almighty Top Teir, what bestows me the honor of seeing you tonight?"
The smile softened, and X8b rolled her eyes, "You joke to much. It's going to get you in trouble one of these days."
"What, are you going to tell on me?" K70 raised an eyebrow knowingly.
"It's not that big of an offence."
"I'm glad you care, X. You always were my favorite."
A tall gem came onto the terrace they were sitting at. They started passing out thin containers holding some sort of liquid X8b didn't recognize. When the gem gave her and K70 one each, she found it to be clear, much to her surprise.
"Excuse me, what is this?" She asked, picking up her own.
"It is a drink, ma'am."
"What drink?"
"The compound is called CH3COOH." The server replied, before walking to the next table, filled with opals.
K70 frowned, staring at hers but not touching it, "Why would they give this stuff out? No one needs beverages, they just waste time."
"I think the concept is to indulge yourself momentarily, then purge your body so it remains clean." X8b swirled the bubbling liquid around in her container, "Do you wish to indulge with me?"
"No thank you." K70 wrinkled her nose, "This smells disgusting."
X8b shrugged, bringing the container to her lips. The aroma coming from the liquid was hard to describe. It was sharp, distinctly different from any thing she had smelled before. She let a tiny bit of the liquid in her mouth and the taste overwhelmed her. It burned her nose, prickled her mouth, and made her eyes water.
She choked on it slightly, spitting it back out as quickly as she could.
X8b put the glass back down, squeezing her eyes shut. That was...unpleasant, yet strangely she didn't mind. There was a odd flavor she couldn't quite place, but it was quite powerful.
"Well?" K70 asked.
"I...don't know." X8b frowned, the taste still lingered, "...I've never tasted anything like it."
The other Obsidian shuddered, looking over her shoulder, "Must be an acquired then."
X8b glanced in the direction she was looking in time to see a Morganite take the whole drink and swallow it. What!? How even would you do that?
"Must be." She agreed.
"Guess you'll have to acquire it too, since you're high ranking now."
"If I have to get used to drinking this," X8b gestured to her beverage, "I'd rather be back in training."
K70 laughed, "That's not a good attitude to have! Especially for a Top Tier."
"Very well, but I do have a reason for bring you here besides witty banter."
"Oh?" K70 tilted her head, "And what would my illustrious Top Tier want with me?"
"This is serious. Please, act like it."
"Of course." K70 sighed, "Back to business. What is it X?"
X8b paused, considering what to say. Even after setting up this meeting, she still wasn't sure of herself. This decision would impact K70's life and perhaps the lives of many Obsidian's. However...
"I want you to take over my previous position."
K70 blinked.
"It's a lot of work." X8b explained, "You have to manage a lot of Obsidians, take care of Homeworld inspections where the other Top Tiers and I can't. I know it's a lot to ask, but you're the only Obsidian I trust to handle to job."
The other Obsidian stared at her for a moment in silence.
"I'm...flattered." She started, "but I have some concerns-"
"The Obsidians I worked with wouldn't do well in my position. They don't have the experience of teaching new Obsidians like you do." X8b interrupted, "I trust you more than I trust them."
"Well..." K70 paused, frowning, "Won't they think I just got in because I know you?"
"You think you can't prove yourself?" X8b raised an eyebrow, "The most they can do is raise a formal complaint, which will go back to me."
"Right well-"
"And if they give you any trouble, you can always take it up with me."
"X8b..." K70 groaned, rubbing her temple.
"I'm just looking out for you." X8b replied coolly, "It's good to know gems in our occupation."
"..." K70 shook her head, but she was smiling, "Well, I'm honored. I will graciously take the job. Even if it does mean I'll get swamped with even more work."
X8b glanced down at the center of the pool. The pearls had stopped singing now and many gems were giving their approval. It was such a beautiful song....
"How are the newest Obsidians doing?"
K70 shook her head, "Not good. There were only three from the latest batch who could see their own aura. I have no idea what the issue is. I asked a Peridot but they couldn't give me specifics."
"Homeworld is running out of materials is what's happening." X8b murmurer darkly.
"Is that true?"
"Unfortunately." She sighed, "we're losing gems at the same rate we're making them. There are more defects as well. I don't know how long we're going to last before expansion slows to a halt."
"That's awfully positive."
"I'm being realistic." X8b stood up, "I think I'm done here. You may stay as long as you wish and contact me when you officially move in."
"Will do." The other Obsidian crossed her arms in front of her chest in salute, "Thank you, my illustrious X."
X8b almost rolled her eyes as she walked to the exit.

Millenia ago, Jasper could recall standing at attention in a debriefing room, back on the colony that would never be hers, while an enemy pearl was being interrogated after capture. The olivine responsible for the interrogation had been brutal enough to get a reprimand after the record was reviewed, but the little gray pearl had been impossibly quiet and hadn’t given up any useful information before her end. It had been an uncomfortable waste of several days, and eventually, the truth had come to light; that they’d grabbed the wrong rebel pearl entirely, and that the little waif likely knew less about Rose Quartz’s rebellion than either of her captors.
She hadn’t realized how that would stick with her. The prospect of interrogating or torturing civilians was sickening enough in theory, but in practice, it had left an ugly mark on her impression of her higher ups. Sometimes, Jasper wondered if she would have gotten so invested in Protection Services if it weren’t for that little ghostly thing haunting her into the second age.
But this wasn’t a temporary base on a doomed colony; this was a familiar outpost in the Home cluster, staffed largely by old soldiers and remnants from the Pink Court. The red zoisite was a Gem she knew well, and her captive was being extremely cooperative. She was true to her word, and Jasper begrudgingly admired that, given her certainty that she would be shattered for her crimes.
Pearl answered questions when asked, and Zoisite took note of when her jaw would snap shut as if a string had been pulled. She was sympathetic, which left Jasper room to be attentive. Where the gray pearl millennia ago hadn’t had useful information to give, this Gem...
Her recollection was equal parts perfect, and impossible to reconcile with historical record. Pearl could describe in perfect detail a number of landmarks and bases and events, which confirmed her identity, and her involvement with the rebellion. She could recite coordinates and plans from the original colony plan rote, which helped fill the gaps as to how Rose Quartz’s tiny army had been able to turn the tides.
But she couldn’t confirm where that inside information had come from. She hadn’t been the primary source, after all; Pink Diamond Herself had given her to Rose Quartz. She had holo-vid of the exchange, albeit without sound.
...On a Spire that wasn’t erected for another two-hundred years, according to record.
Her memories must have been tampered with.
Zoisite confirmed this; Pink Diamond had never been given any blank pearls to distribute among Her court. And the scan on entry had indicated that she was a White Pearl, Luster Class; too tightly regulated to have been just handed out as a reward. And if another Gem had doctored her memories as far back as that, none of her testimony regarding Rose Quartz or the rebellion could be used.
Jasper watched, careful to guard her expression, as the pearl bowed her head and cried, not terribly unlike her distant sister had on Earth. If her surrender were truly pointless, there was no utility keeping her alive, and no one in the Home Galaxy could be trusted to keep the Renegade in line. She bit the inside of her cheek, vying for time, because Jasper knew she would open her mouth and say something profoundly stupid.
“I’ll take her from here, Zoisite,” she grumbled, “Just forget the whole thing. I’ll handle this privately.”

Finally an update! Kept you waiting huh? Yeah full time jobs eats up a lot of my time and creativity, but I also had to break this chapter down into three pieces to get it out. Hope you all enjoy, comment if you do. Comments give me LIFE. On a side note, been really neglecting this blog. I should start reblogging certain writing related posts here. Or finally muster the will to decorate this place.

So this is something I had been cooking up for a while now. I created a info dump/outline for the world and story here earlier and it just kinda started growing until I had enough for a prologue. Here is the summary:
“It's the dawn of Era 3. Steven and his friends are liberating Gemkind one world at a time, with Yellow and Blue Diamond coming along for the ride. Next on their list is the planet Vitreum, a world that's been out of contact for eons. However, their ship crashes and they soon discover that this is no ordinary Gem colony. It is a world inhabited only by colossal fusions.“
I am really proud of this piece, I've been getting better at painting scenes and I LOVE stories about giants or titanic beings. I think its a very different setting than what the main characters are used to, especially the Diamonds, and that will have a lot of room for interesting interactions.
So hope you enjoy!
Some credits: Originally the idea was inspired by the piece "Fusions world" by Twenty-seventh on Deviantart, you might even see my comment that sparked all this in the comment section. Highly recommend you check out their stuff! Also partly influenced by god warriors” by tobiee, the stone giant scene from The Hobbit, the Titans from the God of War games, and even the Imperial Titans from Warhammer 40,000. Really helped influence the scale and sense of movement.
