Experimental Geli Plates [PRINT]
Making these plates was a huge test of patience. Really had to adopt the lighthearted print attitude of enjoying the process! It was a case of fifth time lucky trying to coax mine out of it’s tuppaware. It would tear each time and I had to hold back a scream.
It’s a fun medium to play with. Although the squelching sound (is that normal?) was quite unnerving, there’s a lot of potential to build up interesting and detailed textures through the layers.

Printmaking; Geliplate Prints
23/Feb/2021
I watched Fiona’s workshop on how to make and use a Geliplate last week and made myself a geliplate. It didn’t turn out right so I had just left it but I whacked it back out today to try and do something with it. I didn’t bother trying to melt it back down and remake it because I’m pretty sure I just had just used the wrong ratio of water to gelatine to glyercol. It didn’t look like hers but I thought I’d try to print with it anyway.
It didn’t make a perfect print but was still such a fun process. There was holes and grooves in the plate that couldn’t be hidden but it didn’t bother me too much.
I experimented with cut outs, taping off and covering different sections and layering prints. The last four are my favourites. I didn’t think through my designs much honestly just had fun with it. Worked with triangles to link up with my graphics work and mainly focused on printing in blue and red/orange.
I really like working with triangles as I find they convey the concept of movement very well as they lead the eye in whatever way they’re pointed. I focus on downward facing triangles.
Very fun, might do other things with them like collage. May cut up and reassemble them. Interesting process.

Bu gece çile gecesi, diğer bir ismiyle Şeb-i Yelda... Geçen yıl bu geceyi bir şiirle yadetmiştik. Aynı dilek ve temmenniyle bu yıl da paylaşalım...
"Bu gece Şeb-i Yelda'dır.
Umutlar heyat verer, umutsuz her şey solar
Ali Kıran/ Iğdır, 09.12.2019
Şaxda: Şiddetli soğuk
Bozbaş: Et ve nohuttan yapılan yöresel bir yemek
Baxdavar: Şanslı
İsdi: Sıcak

I’m currently multitasking and waiting for a video I’m making for #liverpoolindependentartschool to render (which is taking ages) so I thought I’d release another set from the bottomless plan-chest of earlier work. This starts with three seated forest Buddhas and a test print I had made initially for the UCU reps who fought hard to stop management bullying at City of Liverpool College and tried to defend our jobs. I ended up printing s lot of these for those staff still remaining there too. These are all Lino. Next are three different types of print done on a geliplate - so they are one offs of two skulls and the profile of a man’s face. Finally are the artists proof of the Goddess Belisama - who was the Romano-Celtic goddess of the Mersey and Ribble and s couple of remaining Green Man images. Which were the first Lino cut I ever tried at home. All of these prints are £15 +P&P and won’t be going on Etsy so will likely disappear after this burst #printmakersofinstagram #printmaking #linocut #geliplateprints #gelliplate #buddha #solidarity #tradeunion #belisama #greenman #pagansofinstagram #flashsale #lastchance (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIog-pnHkYO/?igshid=1wsdp182jcip3

Mono print
Geliplate printing
I love gelipelate printing it was my favourite activities that I did at college, I was hoping that it would be available at the university to do, maybe I will ask when I go back if it is available to do. Because I don’t want to buy my own geliplate as they are expensive when I could just borrow on from the university. i would like to see what ideas I could come up with and try out now that I am at university and I have had other ideas.

youtube
I love how the artist used the paper to create cut outs in the piece. Then went back in to create ghost prints of the same image. Therefore you get two different prints that are similar in style but not in colour. As on the first layer you take most of the vibrant colour and then you are left whatever paint is left on the plate, this is usually a duller version of the original colours that is why it is called a ghost print because it is whatever is left behind.

This is a technique that I really struggled with in college. I struggled to get a high enough contrast image and it has to be an image out of a magazine as it is something about the glossiness of the paper that really make the ink transfer well and creates a good print.
I love that she showed the magazine pages with all the colour on at the end of the video. As that is my favourite part as you got to see close up what was once almost black and white page then have a wash of colour over the top of it. And the the pages with the cover on just gave it a totally different vibe and it made the picture look totally different.
I took notes on how to do this technique so that I had it for later purposes just in case I lost access to this video I would still be able to know how to do this technique.

I love this persons personality and tone when she is talking about the gel plate prints. She really sounds like she is having a nice time and loves making her art.

This video and process is very nice and it give me a really nice greeting cards design vibe.

This is another interesting way to use a geliplate. With this technique you get a more vibrant and colourful patteren. When using acrylic paints you want those prints to be the background image but with using the alcohol inks because they are so vibrant you wont get away with using them as a background so you will end up using them as a focal point of the piece.
These last 2 video links are a great way to use up all the prints that you dont like or didn’t work out as well as you wanted to. Because you don’t want to throw away any prints that you have made as they might be useful but you just don’t know what to do with them. Here are a few examples of things that can be done with them;
Bookmarks
Greeting card
Journal covers
Handmade boxes
Handmade pouches/ packaging
Stamps
Stickers

I love the idea of the pouch/case i think it is very unique and different. I would like to see it done on a canvas bag to see if you would get the same effect.
Over all I really liked researching geliplate printing, I am definitely doing to see if it something that I can do next year and see how far I can get with it. As it didn’t fit with any of the projects I had done this year. I didn’t want to force it and it not fit and then me waste the opportunity to use it. So next year is definitely an option.

Studio culture 2
We were introduced to our modules for this term at the very end of last term, right before Christmas. Out of landscape, body, pop and abstract & materiality. I decided early on that I wanted to do abstract and materiality.
At Christmas break I decided to look in to abstract and materiality and pop culture just to make sure that I wanted to do abstract & materiality and pop culture so I had a back up plan.
So when it came around to the staff doing their PowerPoint presentations, I was really set on doing the abstract & materiality topic.
I knew I really wanted to do something with lots of bold colour. So therefore it was just working out how I was going to add that to the project.
I chose this project as it is different from my last project and I wanted to challenge myself to do better as one of the things I has feedback on in my last project if that I needed to create a more substantial workload to get a better mark. And I believe that I can create a better outcome doing this project.
I would like to use most of the mediums used in abstract & materiality
• Painting
• Sculpture/instillation
• Printmaking
• Fibre/textile
• Drawing
• Photography
As Angela went through the PowerPoint I was interested in;
• instillation, I liked the idea of creating something that could be hung/draped and walked around and also walked inside of.
• painting, I like this idea most of all as it is easy to do and you can creat many different styles from using one material. You can also create texture.
• Printmaking, I like the way u can be creative with this, monoprint, lino cut, cyanotype, geliplate.
• I would like to tryout fibre/textiles. This would give me a extra medium to work with.
In the PowerPoint presentation there was many artist that jumped out to me and were very interesting it me.
• Ian Davenport
• Katherina Grosse
• Cornelia Parker
• Shelia Hicks
• Eduardo Paollozzi
• Lesley Halliwell
• Naomi Kendrick
These artists at first glance gave me views on using different materials and different ways to go about making a piece of work.
With all the ideas from Christmas break and the new ideas from the PowerPoint presentation I created a mind map. This allowed me to explore each idea in detail and add to and evaluate them.
