In 2009 I started to cover my jewelry with spray paint and needed color inspiration. At the time I was a resident artist at my dear Penland School of Crafts and a fellow resident suggested I look at the quilts of Gee’s Bend. He thought I would be inspired by the color schemes of those incredible quilts, and he was right. It goes beyond color for me, too… composition, shape, the edges, the labor, the care…
Gee’s Bend quilts began with fabrics chosen from what was available: old, worn out clothing; faded, stained, stretched, and torn. Color was coordinated according to what was available, too, and unusual, complementary combinations were the result. Compositions were guided by the inherent qualities of the materials and the limited color palettes. Many quilts were improvisational, while others followed a few simple patterns such as “Housetop,” which offered tremendous freedom within the simple parameter of the concentric square. Created with great care, the quilts were made to keep family members warm because there was no heat in their homes. The unique and distinctive look of the quilts developed over time, reflecting the culture and location of these natural, brilliant artists.
The people who made these quilts, and continue to make them, are the women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, a small region born of a plantation in the mid 1800s. The community includes about 700 people, most of whom are descendants of slaves.
Pictured here in the order are quilts made by: Ella Bendolph, Loretta Pettway, Linda Pettway, Beatrice Pettway, Nell Hall Williams, Pearlie Pettway Hall, Arlonzia Pettway, Aolar Mosely, Amelia Bennett, and Patty Ann Williams.

THE GEES BEND QUILTS: these beautiful hand-made examples were included in the exhibition ‘We Will Walk – Art and Resistance in the American South’ at Turner Contemporary. Many were made by descendants of workers on slave plantations in Alabama, who developed these in isolation. @turnercontemporary #wewillwalk #geesbendquilts #geesbend #quilt #americanart #alabama #textileart (at Turner Contemporary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD3W_RIlIOj/?igshid=opwg8uhq7zar

The chosen Identity for Trilogy, a hospitality property inspired by the incredible history and artful woman of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. We pushed for them to choose this identity since it represented the intricate workings of their incredible quilts, which now I’m dying to go see in person. The quilts of Gee's Bend are considered to be unique, and one of the most important African-American visual and cultural contributions to the history of art within the United States. I’m excited to see this project come to life ✨ . . . #hospitalitybranding #logodesign #typedesign #typographic #artfulwordmark #artlogo #geesbend #geesbendquilts #africanamericanart #africaninspired #alabamaart #brandingdesign #hotellogo https://www.instagram.com/p/CGP80iNAuOE/?igshid=1a1jrrf5e86kj

My latest creation! So this pair was special to me bc I learned a great lesson in Black history by doing them. @ms.newsunshine put me on! So there is a group of Black Women in Alabama called the Gee's Bend Quiltmakers. They have been making handmade quilts since the 20's. Her shoes represent 2 quilts she chose and the names of the women that made them. I love when I get to recreate great artwork! #customshoes #customart #custommade #custom #customconverse #converse #vans #pixcustomz #jackbaidesigns #shoes #shoesforsale #shoesaddict #shoeslover #shoelover #shoegame #blackownedbusiness #blackowned #blackownedbusinesses #blackcreatorsfund #geesbendquilts #geesbend #geesbendinspired https://www.instagram.com/p/CByOX4JnMoT/?igshid=11j3vp51jk3j5

The Quilts of Gee's Bend are created by a group of women and their ancestors who live or have lived in the isolated African-American hamlet of Gee's Bend, Alabama along the Alabama River. The Quilts are considered to be unique, and one of the most important African-American visual and cultural contributions to the history of art within the United States. Throughout the post-bellum years and into the 20th century, Gee's Bend women made quilts to keep themselves and their children warm in unheated shacks that lacked running water, telephones and electricity. Along the way they developed a distinctive style, noted for its lively improvisations and geometric simplicity.
