just remembered that Carton de Wiart moment where he wanted to drop weight so he could enter a steeplechase, so (seeing as he lived in Cairo at the time) he put on his heaviest clothes and ran back and forth to the Pyramids until he had sweated off a satisfactory number of pounds, then proceeded to completely bungle the race because he was (as you might imagine) dehydrated to the point of delirium

Is it wrong to glorify war heroes? Is it wrong to celebrate them? Are they the same thing?
As a cishet male I have often fantasised about standing alongside my brothers in arms as we face down impossible odds and we are sure to meet our doom, but we fight anyway, knowing that it may be worth something in the end.
However I often think about 'war heroes' as well. From multitudes of wars, on both sides. Adrian carton de Wiart was an absolute unit from the Boer War and both World Wars. He was injured in just about every location you can think of and when asked for his experiences of WW1, he said 'frankly I had enjoyed the war'. Should he be celebrated? Without him, many battles may have been lost since he excelled in his position as a general, but in glorifying him, are we not glorifying a man who enjoyed war, and therefore war itself? I don't know
And is it wrong to find the achievements of a man who was fighting on the enemy side impressive. The Red Baron who fought on the side of the Axis Powers in WW1 was one of the most impressive fighter pilots there was. But also he was on the axis sides. Is it wrong to recognise his exceptional performance for what it was? I don't know
I was kinda just thinking about it. War is obviously bad. But when war happens and people are there who perform amazing feats, should they be remembered for that greatness? I would honestly love to hear people's thoughts, if they have time to give them

Adrian Carton de Wiart
This week’s episode ‘Adrian Carton de Wiart’ is up!
Today’s tale picks up 18th November 1914. The setting Shimber Berris, the tallest mountain in the African state of Somaliland. The Kharif, “a hot labouring wind heavy with sand” was in full force, but up in the hills that day the air was quite pleasant… Actually, a slight correction, the air was heavy with waves of red hot bullets flying in around head height. While this kind of weather isn’t to…

People imagine the loss of a hand to be far more serious than the loss of an eye, but having tried both I can say sincerely that it is not my experience. It is rather my private conceit that I can do most things a two-handed man can do, and almost as quickly, but I do not think a single day has passed when | have not missed my eye. There is an old Indian proverb which says: ‘Never trust a one-eyed man as he sees everything.’ In a way it is true as the loss of an eye makes one very observant, but there are many irritating drawbacks that are apt to get on one’s nerves. Anyone standing on my blind side makes me feel I have my back to them, and I have never really enjoyed playing a ball game since I lost my eye.
intriguing. I wouldn't have thought that either

General Sir Adrian Paul Ghislain Carton de Wiart,VC, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO (5 May 1880 – 5 June 1963) was an officer in the British Army.
