🌈 FOR PRIDE MONTH: the history of Modern British Art is full of LGBTQ+ artists and so it seems a timely moment to recognise a few of the LGBTQ+ artists in the @pallanthousegallery collection. Our collection is particularly strong in Neo-Romantic artists of the 1940s who were friends, including John Minton (1), John Craxton (2), Keith Vaughan (3), and Robert Colquhoun (4) and his partner Robert MacBryde. But earlier in the century it also includes Duncan Grant’s homoerotic scene at Charleston ‘Bathers by the Pond’ from 1920-21 (5), Glyn Philpot’s ‘Portrait of Henry Thomas’ (6), Edward Burra’s ‘Market Day’ (7) and later works by the Pop artists David Hockney (8) and Mark Lancaster (9), and abstract works by Howard Hodgkin (10). I realise that we have an extensive collection of these artists to select from and we have been supported by several generous gay collectors, but also have had numerous exhibitions focussed on these artists in which their identity had been part of the story but not the only story. We have lots of the G in the LGBTQI+ but less (that we know) of the others, and I hesitate to make any assumptions without any basis in fact. Over the years I am proud to have written with honesty (and no silly euphemisms) about the lives and relationships of some of these artists in books on John Minton, Edward Burra, Gluck, Robin Ironside and last year’s exhibition catalogue @gva_ivam ‘Moral Disorders: Sexuality and European Art between the Wars’. It’s important to recognise these queer histories: for all these artists sexual relationships between men were illegal prior to 1967 and yet these artists expressed something of themselves, their identity, tastes and desires in their work. And as all around the world we see regular news of prejudice, discrimination, violence and hatred towards LGBTQ+ people we need to recognise their contribution to our collective sense of culture, not just for particular communities, but for all. #pride #instagay #modernbritishart #gayart #queerart #queer #pridemonth #pridemonth2021 #pallanthousegallery #modernbritish #davidhockney #johnminton #edwardburra #keithvaughan #robertcolquhoun #glynphilpot #markLancaster #lgbtq #lgbtqart https://www.instagram.com/p/CQNxFeqFjB2/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Walled Garden Keith Vaughan 1951 lithograph spotted at The Original Print Fair at the RA yesterday. A great Fair to get along to and drool at the offerings, then gasp at the prices. #keithvaughan #romanticmodernism #lithography #printfair #RA

THE HOLY GRAIL: oh, the excitement when you find something you have looked for for a decade! This is the Ex Libris bookplate of the poet and publisher John Lehmann (1907-1987), and it’s especially thrilling (to me) because it’s a wood-engraving made in 1944 by the artist Keith Vaughan, whom Lehmann commissioned to produce numerous book cover designs and illustrations (and whose centenary exhibition I curated in 2012). Lehmann was an important figures in British literary life and queer history, the brother of writer Rosamund Lehmann and Beatrix Lehmann. After Cambridge, and working as a journalist in Vienna, he founded New Writing in 1936 which published writers and poets such as WH Auden, Christopher Isherwood and Stephen Spender, including the celebrated anthology of Spanish Civil War poetry ‘Poems for Spain’, and in 1940 it became Penguin New Writing (which he continued to edit). Lehmann joined Leonard and Virginia Woolf’s Hogarth Press in 1938 as Managing Director and in 1946 set up his own publishing house John Lehmann Publishing - with many of his books illustrated by Neo-Romantic artists such as Vaughan and John Minton. His autobiographical novel ‘In the Purely Pagan Sense’ is a fascinating account of gay literary life in the middle of the twentieth-century, and as a figure he connects so many writers, poets and artists in the 1940s and 50s. The bookplate is pure Neo-Romanticism and I especially like it as it relates to the theme of the exhibition and book I worked on in 2007: ‘Poets in the Landscape: The Romantic Spirit in British Art’ which explored the imagery of poets under trees in mid-century Britain, tracing it back to Samuel Palmer and William Blake. As a collector of Ex Libris - bookplates marking ownership of books - I am fascinated by the friendships, patronage and interests they reveal. This is a combination of all of these elements as well as being a very rare early print by Vaughan. It perfectly complements another one designed by Vaughan for the actor Michael Redgrave that I have in my collection, which is from the same period. I’ve reached Peak Niche Nerd #bookplate #modernbritishart #neoromanticism #johnlehmann #keithvaughan #hogarthpress (at Brighton and Hove) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJdXel_Fzkf/?igshid=1juvpylgyg6m8

A happy find: one of today’s tasks has been wrapping vintage dust jackets in acetate to protect them. In this book ‘Shelley in Italy’ designed by Keith Vaughan I was delighted to find a postcard from the author and publisher John Lehmann himself inscribed ‘I hope you will accept this little gift, dear John, more for the spirit in which it is sent than for what it is - John L’. The book itself is dedicated ‘John Morris with affectionate wishes John Lehmann.’ Morris (1895-1980) was a literary figure, who worked at the BBC in the 1940s and 50s. He took part in two attempts to climb Everest in the 1930s (once with Tenzing Norgay as his Sherpa) and in his frank autobiography ‘Hired to Kill’ wrote about coming to terms with his homosexuality whilst in the army. He was Professor of English Literature, Keio University and lecturer at Imperial and Bunrika Universities, Tokyo from 1938. He became head of the BBC Far Eastern Service 1943–1952, and controller for the BBC Third Programme 1952–1958. From February 1943 to October 1943 he worked in the same department as George Orwell, at 200 Oxford Street. Stephen Spender described Morris in his Journals as: “A not very daring promoter of the cause of culture, cruelly teased by his friend E.M. Forster, who referred to him as 'the pudding'.” He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1957 New Year Honours, and appeared as a castaway on the BBC Radio programme Desert Island Discs on 16 February 1959 (Favourite track: Sonata in B Flat Minor (Opus 35) by Frédéric Chopin played by Rachmaninov, Book: The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Luxury: Soap and a piano). It joins the dots with Lehman’s Ex Libris bookplate (designed by Vaughan) which I posted on here a couple of weeks ago, and recent thinking about @nancy_cadogan_art and her show in the @keats_shelley_house_rome . I get so excited by these bits of bibliophile ephemera and marginalia as they connect me directly to the authors, artists, publishers and readers, and their friends and loved ones. #bibliophile #bibliophilelife #book #modernbride #keithvaughan #johnlehmann #design #ephemera #bookjacket #queerart #gayart #lgbtqhistory (at Brighton and Hove) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKHMpAEFEki/?igshid=i9oubmiljdj1
