Review - Star Wars: The Old Republic
As with any 14 year old game, especially of the MMO genre, one can expect that it’s gone through a few changes. I cannot speak for its current viability, as I’ve heard from some players that they’ve been a bit lax with any major expansion update for some years now, in the same timeframe as the COVID pandemic which may have affected their workflow. So getting into this game really depends on what you want out of a game or MMO.
The usual MMO trappings reveal themselves in short order; between not being able to equip purple “epic” gear, only being able to hold a certain amount of credits, and the fact that your level cap will be 60, locking you out of four or so major content updates. A single month purchase will unlock the rest of it permanently. I was lucky enough to have a friend to sponsor a couple of months in my era of unemployment, but I won’t lie to you: The hard cap and content lockout was annoying, but unfortunately not entirely unheard of for MMO operations.
Tumblr media
In my recent ~140 hours I’ve only done the multiplayer Flashpoints (the 4-person dungeons through a group finder queue). I highly recommend turning General chat off in the Fleets.
I’m here to tell you that as a free player, playing this game like an extended KOTOR-3 is an entirely viable way to go about it.
Everyone has their own opinions and tier list of various class stories. Having done up to Chapter 2 throughout most of them and finished only two or three, it really is a subjective preference. I found the Sith Warrior to be highly engaging, while the Jedi Consular bored me to a point where I’ve lost the thread and I’m not really sure what was going on at all after a certain point. I’m told the Jedi Knight is basically the unofficial KOTOR3 on its own, but the shadow of Revan is around regardless of who you play as.
Tumblr media
Ultimately every origin story has their own power struggles that run mostly concurrently with each other with the occasional and rare overlap, until the various expansions where your singular PC morphs into a singular character with vague mentions of all the origin characters being in the wind, dead or missing. This runs the risk of what the original content excelled at, each origin feels very unique and (most of) their stories are engaging. But in doing so they had more or less written themselves in a corner and their way out of it was making the dialog more generalized, my Sith Warrior main barely makes any mention of being Sith but in the rare moments and most of their jerk dialog just amounts to “I will destroy you” rather than “The Sith will return”, because they had to account for all the other characters at once.
I am currently playing through the “Fallen Empire” arc and while I am highly engaged, I do feel like it takes place in a different universe but in a somewhat good way. The aesthetics of the Eternal Empire feel at odds with the aesthetics of the franchise. I have my Sith Warrior dressed in the usual black and red Darth-y stuff, and I look like a cartoon character as I traverse a corridor with more realistically designed Netflix-show-esque outfits.
Tumblr media
Gameplay? It’s an MMO. Third person, WASD movement, action bars. Unfortunately the game doesn’t have an Addon/Mod system but it has an ingame interface editor which is fairly easy to use and you can scale the UI to your preferences.
Frankly I got a lot of WoW flashbacks as I played it after eight or so years away. The Operative/Assassin/Shadow classes effectively operate like a rogue, with stealth and single-target stun abilities. In that way it can feel a bit dated, but makes up for it with the story flow and doesn’t bog you down too heavily with a hundred skills and spells.
At a certain point the whole game feels like a Mass Effect game with a Star Wars skin painted over it, because once you’re in your 60’s you have most of your class’s kit and once you figure out a skill priority and order your action bars around it’s unlikely you’ll need to rearrange it much after that, and then it just feels like a Mass Effect ability bar. So it’s just a matter of running around the story, but there’s a scaling issue where you’re constantly over-leveled for the area so to make sure you’re not one-tapping bosses, you’ll be scaled down to the content for the entire duration of the game, until whatever the endgame loop zone at 80 is. This is unlike a Bioware game where, even if you play on a set difficulty, their games become progressively easier as you upgrade. Sadly here in SWTOR, my Darth is struggling against basic droids. Where it originally excelled at the power fantasy of a lightsaber wielding Jedi, over time you just become some random with a sword.
Tumblr media
The game isn’t difficult, just time consuming. But the experience is very much comparable to a distant KOTOR sequel and if that’s the vibe you’re going for, there’s a lot of bang for little buck here. The initial game is free and you can get a couple of hundred hours on it easily. Even when I was stuck at a lower level cap it still took me 40-60 hours getting through one story, but I was doing a little bit of side-faff like Flashpoints and Roleplay. So maybe every class story could potentially be accurately summed up as 20-40 hours of gameplay… and there’s eight origins to play through, each with eight subclasses to experience. There’s a lot of game here, and it’s hard to argue with free.

Mass Effect 3 (Legendary Edition version)
4/5
We still think this is the best of the trilogy. 3 finally kicks the story into high gear as the galaxy finds itself at war with the Reapers, and it's not going well. It creates a good atmosphere where every battle feels a little bit hopeless.
That said, there are problems with the story. The Cerberus stuff weighs down on the plot some, and the addition of new characters in this final part feels sudden. James is probably great if you ever put him in your party, but Kai Leng is such a bland, pointless villain. The fact that they had the entire Cerberus-focused second game to introduce him is an obvious tell of the fact that the series at large had some issues with the overall arc. It comes to a head with the infamous ending, which still doesn't feel great, mostly because it feels like it lacks any climax as a game. There's not even a final boss, just a bigger-than-usual fight to finish things on.
Where things lack with the overall story, the game shines with its character work. The finales these characters get is beautiful. Thane's plot still brings us to tears, and you can give Mordin a phenomenal ending. The ability to enter or re-enter some long term romances like the Noveria Survivor or Liara really feels like you're earning something after their reduced role in 2. And the Citadel DLC is such a light-hearted last hurrah with these characters that it's one of the game's best sidequests.
One of the things that's obvious replaying as a Renegade Shep is the way the plot is railroaded. After their speciesism and batting for Cerberus in the second game, why are they just fine helping out whatever alien species? It doesn't seem like a cold-hearted, reckless warrior should be getting all the same war assets as a kind-hearted, empathetic Paragon Shep. But the plot must go as it goes and it must go from point to point to point because that's the way they wrote it. We get it, but once again we play a Bioware game and can feel the developer's intent for you to be playing good.
The gameplay is pretty typical Mass Effect, a third-person cover shooter of the day with special powers. The real fun is tweaking your skills, weapons and armor to make a build that tears through the enemies. We made a biotic Shepherd that exploded her shield to damage enemies, and then used a different skill to regenerate her shield. From there, we realized we could tweak all our armor on to power damage and recharge time, and then just carry a shotgun. Seeing the obvious road to this glass cannon building and choosing to follow it is a wonderful thing.
The level design is pretty solid throughout. Since you're often going through warzones, it's fun how the levels will suddenly block you off with debris or a new path will open with an explosion. You're often going up, down, and, indeed, all around the areas, making the linearity not feel like a straight line. Sidequests clearly reuse multiplayer maps, which are more basic in comparison but also a nice change of pace with their arena-like nature.
Our biggest problem with the gameplay is that it feels like there's not enough enemy variety, as you mostly fight Reaper faction or Cerberus faction, and at some point you've seen all the troops they have so it's just a matter of configuration. The Reapers at least have some great character designs, twisted mutations of the familiar races (the Banshee is a real winner). By comparison, the Cerberus troops are all dudes in armor. You're bored of them after your second time seeing them.
Overall, we would not say we're a fan of the Mass Effect trilogy. However, we're definitely a fan of ME3. This is probably Bioware's finest moment as a mainstream developer, an entertaining action game with huge stakes and character work that reward those that played previous games. There's plenty of room to play the game how you want and memorable levels.

Note
please try to sell me gw2. i really want to like it and ive tried a couple times over the years to get into it, but every time my experience is like: walk for 5 irl minutes -> talk to someone -> kill 20 things -> random world events -> kill 50 things -> go back and talk to the person. rinse and repeat
and then i uninstall the game
Hard to sell it to ya when it's free to play ;0
Tumblr media
As a new/returning player I honestly recommend going in with some friends. It's a game were you can absolutely solo PvE with the right build, but I always have more fun playing with my friends for the shenanigans. I also, 100%, recommend plopping an OC in the game. My first characters were both in-game and all their lore is based around GW2, but putting June in there has been hella fun to see how she would handle being in Tyria.
Your first 80 levels are basically to help get you accustom to the game mechanics and the story. Though the story is optional, I recommend playing it so you get more of a feel of Tyria and the history. The story also leads you through the game an the map rather than just taking random quests as you explore. It's really the only mode that gives you a bit of direction in the game.
If you happen to get stuck or have any questions about the game, it's pretty safe to ask the map chat and usually people will help you out, especially in early maps. GW2 is a game that doesn't really teach you how to play, you learn as you go. There's also plenty of YT vids on how to get started and tutorials if you get stuck or suggestions of things to try out as you level. They've also updated the game fairly recently where you now have access to the Raptor mount without needing to have Path of Fire or doing the expansion, which is a HUGE quality of life change while you explore the early maps.
Once your toon hits level 80, that's when you unlock your mastery tracks that will allow you to do more of the endgame content and continue through the living story. Fractals, Raids, Dungeons, Strikes, World Bosses, Meta Trains, Gold Farming, PvP, WvW, FASHION WARS!!, There's a ton to do once you're set up, and again, lots of resources available to help you out (TaCO, GW2 Efficiency, Crafting Guides).
The world is unique. It feels lived in and ever expanding. The lore for all the playable races in the game is really interesting and they do a lot to subvert expectations from typical fantasy stories. Some things are a hit or miss for a lot of folks but there's so much to love about the game even my least favorite parts are like just mid to me compared to the parts I genuinely enjoy. My favorite expansion is Path of Fire + Season 4. The desert maps are my favorites followed by Maguma (begrudgingly). Cantha had grown on me a lot after a million Leviathan Farms for gold lol. THE SEASONAL EVENTS AHHH like again there's just so much to touch on but yeah the long and short of it is it IS a time sink at minimum to get to the more favored content, but even as a old player I still love making new toons and taking them through the early game content again just for fun.
But yeah, free to play, no subscriptions, all expansions are a one time purchase. You've got 10 years worth of content to explore and try out. It's a relatively inexpensive MMO (the expacs can be up to 50% off during certain yearly sales). An overall very helpful community. Any paid content is mostly cosmetics and convenience items, but nothing that gives you an advantage over other players. Basically everyone is grinding towards a similar end-goal, so you can always get the same gear as people through grinding. Nothing is really out of reach and people are always willing to help others out with multiplayer content.
I've been consistently playing for 8-9 years now. It's one of those game where I'm IN it for like a few months then may take a few months off until a holiday event I love is coming up and then I play for a few months again. It's probably the only other game I've sunk as much time into as Pokemon or Skyrim over the years (I jokingly call it Skyrim Online since ya'll won't catch me playing ESO). But yeah just, it's a game I never expected to play for this long and this consistently and it always feels fun to pick back up. Genuinely I do hope you give it another try. I've honestly had the most fun I've had in years with the wave of new and returning players jumping back into the game c:

SWTOR OCs + a bit of Moonie Lore pt1: about the game
This goes out to @uhhmmm, who was inquiring about Cipher N and has unlocked the "Talking About SWTOR" achievement. \o/
Seriously though I'm always down to talk about my OCs! I have a lot of SWTOR ones since I played it seriously for quite some time. It was the first MMO I ever played even vaguely "seriously" though I didn't really get into the PVP (player vs player, where you fight each other).
I'll try to skip over or at least explain any jargon, but I'm going to assume you know the basics of "create a character and play the game as that character" thing that happens in RPGs; this is just an RPG LOTS of people are playing - a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, aka an MMORPG, or simply an MMO.
So one day 20-something Moonie picked up this game to play and long story short I played, created, and roleplayed many characters in the setting of Star Wars: The Old Republic, known as TOR when I'm saying it out loud, and SWTOR when I'm typing it. I adore this game, I'm actually gearing up to play Umbral and N as if they were the canon classes. (They are not!)
As such implies, Darth Umbral and Cipher N were not the first Sith Inquisitor and Imperial Agent I ever played, full disclosure. Darth Nox / Imperius (the end class story titles of the Sith Inquisitor) forever belong to my OC, Saphina Kallig, who featured in that prompt I just wrote for.
Here's some real quick basics about SWTOR - if you want to skip past this, jump to the star divider I always use.
you can play as 1 of 8 classes, 4 on the Republic (assumed good) side, and 4 on the Empire (assumed evil) sides. But really, you can be somewhat good even as a Sith, and you can easily be an evil Jedi. The lines are even easier to blur for non Force users
the Jedi and Sith are theoretically opposites (most people know about the cruel and ruthless Sith Lord Darth Vader and the kind and compassionate Jedi Luke Skywalker just by cultural osmosis, they're pretty good examples of what most people expect) but really things can be MUCH more nuanced, which comes up a lot with Umbral
the Empire has it's own version of a bigger, shadier Intelligence Agency than most you run into in real life (please don't run into any of them in real life) called, with great creativity "Imperial Intelligence" and seriously, pretty much everything but the arcane knowledge of the Sith is archived in their databases, and that only because Keeper (the person in charge day-to-day) is wise enough to not stick his neck out near people that have no problem snapping it
to reiterate, Sith are not in general nice people; they are not the good guys of Star Wars but instead the root of all the bad things, and like Jedi are incredibly, superhumanly powerful individuals that, to someone outside the franchise, read a lot like magic wielders
Now, I'm gonna go write up the Cipher and Dark Lord specifically in another post, because doing it on here got way too long. When I'm done, I'll link them here for later ease of access:
Cipher N and Darth Umbral
If at any time you have specific questions hit up my ask!

Joe: Operation Blackout is a team-based third-person shooter where you play as your favorite characters from Team G.I. Joe and Team Cobra. Experience the action from both sides as you help G.I. Joe restore order and lead Cobra to world domination.
G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout Review Pros:
- Decent cel-shaded graphics. - 12.12 GB download size. - Platinum trophy. - Game settings-auto aim, subtitles, and tutorials. - Invert axis and sensitivity sliders. - Solo and Co-op campaign support. (local) - Four difficulties-action figure, government issue, man of action, and real American hero. - Solo gives you an AI partner. - Multiple controller layouts including custom rebind. - 3rd person shooter gameplay. - 12 characters from the series Eyes, Duke, Lady Jaye, Sci-fi, Scarlett, Roadblock, Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow, Firefly, Baroness, Destroy, and Zartan. - Reload-fast reloads by timing your reload. (think Gears Of War active reload) - Ammo and health pickups. - a short starting tutorial section to go over the controls. - Ultimate unique attack for each character that builds over time and when you kill enemies. - Cartoon-looking stills are used for cutscenes. - Unlock new weapons and character skins. - Team battle-four player local MP with six maps, three modes (team arena, assault, and CTF), and settings for kills to win or match time. - Collectibles-comic covers and earn videos. - Bio section for all the characters. - Can replay levels. - Each level shows how many Collectibles you have found, the side objectives completed, and the best time and score. - Can skip the cutscenes. - The story goes between Gi Joe and Cobra. - Stop start animation cutscenes. - End of level breakdown for your score. - Each mission/level lets you pick from the two available characters. - Modifiers-13 of them and they can make the game harder or easier. - On-screen icons for objectives. - Each character has unique attributes. - Decent loading times. - Interactive points and most of the time will trigger a mini-mission like an event. - Can change settings in the pause menu. - Pick up new guns in the level. - Horde mode-style events. - 29 comics to collect showing off classic comics. - Many boss fights with the main characters. - Combo counter for kills to build your score. - Vehicle missions.
Tumblr media
G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout Review Cons: - No field of view slider and the view is quite close. - Hard to pick out enemies. - Auto-aim is not good as it loses lock on with any movement from you or the enemy. - No real replay value. - Characters don't move their mouth when talking. - Shooting in general is just not good. - Heavily scripted fights that break the immersion. - Small text. - They took good mechanics from popular games and mashed them all together. - Pain-in-the-ass trophies are like a load of multiplayer ones. - A lot of the levels are just go here fight a wave, go to next shoot some guys the end. - No online multiplayer or co-op. - Bad Ai pathfinding. - Your AI partner is completely useless. - Comic Collectibles are just the front cover and you can move it around. - Can't skip the ultimate animation. - Can't use modifiers on your first playthrough. - A lot of pop-ins and textures fill in as it loads. - It doesn't use the main 1980s TV show theme tune! Critter Crossfire is Getting Ready for Action
Tumblr media
Critter Crossfire release for the turn-based tactics roguelike game on Linux and Windows PC. Thanks thanks to the creative mind of developer Evan Polekoff for bringing us this wild, skill-packed adventure. Which is due out soon on Steam. Alright Linux players, mark your calendars and clear your schedule — because the Critter Crossfire release is coming in hot on July 10th! That’s right, the wildest, weirdest, and most intense turn-based tactics roguelike you didn’t know you were waiting for is finally coming to Steam. And yes, it works on Linux — so we’re eating good this summer. So, what’s it all about? Imagine a turn-based tactics roguelike game... but someone ripped out the dusty old RNG system and replaced it with physics. No more missing a shot because the dice gods said so. In the Critter Crossfire release, you control the chaos. Every shot, bounce, ricochet, and Hail Mary trickshot is all up to your skill. Whether you’re outsmarting your enemies or outplaying them with an off-the-wall bank shot, the game puts full control in your hands. It’s like XCOM got into a bar fight with Worms — and somehow both came out cooler. The campaign mode is pure roguelike madness. We're talking dozens of runs with unique loadouts, unpredictable challenges, and skill-testing scenarios that’ll keep you glued to your seat. There are 16 campaign challenges that flip the gameplay on its head, forcing you to constantly adapt and rethink your strategy. One run might have you zipping across conveyor belts while dodging spinning platforms, and the next might throw a totally different curveball. You’ll never get too comfortable — and that’s the beauty of it.
Critter Crossfire - Release Date Announcement Trailer
youtube
Need a break from the solo grind? Grab a few friends, some snacks, and dive into 2-4 player local multiplayer. Or, if your crew’s not in the same room, hook it up with Steam Remote Play and launch a full-on physics-fueled war online. Every Critter Crossfire match releases you into a glorious mess of strategy, trickshots, and trash talk. And let’s talk gear. There are over 100 wacky weapons and upgrades to master. Want to bounce a bomb off three walls and land it right in your opponent’s face? Do it. Prefer freezing your enemies in place or launching a barrage of chaos with a rubber duck launcher? That’s in there too. The combinations are as ridiculous as they are powerful — and the only limit is how far your brain (or your aim) can take you. The Critter Crossfire release is shaping up to be something special — a love letter to gamers who are tired of RNG heartbreak and want a tactics game that rewards creativity, precision, and raw skill. Whether you’re a strategy vet, a trickshot fiend, or just looking for a new obsession that plays beautifully on Linux, this title is your next big thing. So don’t wait. Wishlist Critter Crossfire on Steam right now, and get ready to jump into the battlefield on release day, July 10th. The critters are armed. The chaos is coming. Are you ready?
