Mr Hooof’s Taste of Summers past…

A 'Splice' is an Australian ‘lolly’ on a wooden stick consisting of ice cream encased in frozen, fruit flavoured ice under the Streets brand. The Splice is only available in Australia and New Zealand. While there are other arguably more iconic Ozzie brands, for me this one epitomises summer down-under.

Why? It could be, to be musically metaphorical, because the pineapple slash lime flavour ice and vanilla combo tastes like the sound of the Beach Boys’ song, Kokomo - All palm trees, sandy beaches and guys in Hawaiian shirts playing the saxophone… Or it could be, to be literal, hitting the sweet spot with my taste buds.

It’s both those things, of course, but it’s more likely because Splice’s are very similar to the British Mivvi originally made by Lyons Maid, that I love them - They were the taste of my summer childhood.

Mivvis too had an ice-cream centre with a fruity outer shell and were available in orange at first. Later strawberry and raspberry were added as alternative flavours. Walls made a similar one called a Split. Just as delicious. I seem to remember this was also available in pineapple. Mivvis are still around apparently. Yum!

I would always have one on the short walk to the beach where I grew up in Old Mid Wales. No palm trees in sight but the prom was hot underneath my bare, sandy feet and the sun still blazes reliably in my memory.  And d’you know, all these years later my summer routine on the way to North Bondi, New South Wales isn’t much different. Some habits never change.

Now I’m back in freezing old Blighty, it makes you realize life really is about the little pleasures that you can’t make last for long enough. Roll on summer!

For me, any ice cream tastes better when you share the pleasure with a friend in appreciative, indulgent silence. What’s your favourite?  A ’99 cone, a Feast, Twirl or an Orange Maid maybe? …Actually, do they still Orange Maids?

I digress. Activities aren’t all about rock climbing or surfing or the latest show. Share your favourite activity with a friend, old or new however trivial and make new, wonderful memories. This is what Hooof is about too… What are you doing today?
