First lesson:

“I like your shirt,” says the girl who will be Penny’s lab partner for the rest of the year. She looks like she’s paying her college tuition with modeling.

“Thanks,” Penny says, looking down at her Rosie the Riveter tee.

The model just beams at her. It’s kind of terrifying.

Second lesson:

“Don’t you just love this color?” Agatha asks, staring at the beaker.

“Sure.”

“Oxidation is so pretty,” Agatha sighs, with all the fervor of a mad scientist.

Fifth lesson:

“So, how was your date?” Agatha asks.

Penny stares at her. “What date?”

“With the cute blond guy? At the cafe? I saw you but I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Oh my god,” Penny says. “That was Simon. I am not dating Simon.”

“Oh?”

“He has a boyfriend.”

“Oh.”

“Besides, he’s not really my type.”

Sixth lesson:

“Three drops of the potassium iodide, then stir.”

“Do you want to go have coffee after lab?” Agatha asks, hand steady over the beaker.

“I can’t, I have class. Pass me the sulfuric acid, would you?”

Seventh lesson:

“Have you seen the new Star Wars yet?”

“I’m not really into Star Wars.”

Eighth lesson:

“My friend’s band is having a show on Friday. Would you like to come with me?”

“Um, I promised my mum I’d come have dinner at home this weekend.”

Ninth lesson:

“Do you like hiking?”

“Not really a fan of the outdoors. Dial up the heat on the bunsen burner, would you?”

“I wish,” Agatha mutters.

Tenth lesson:

“Look, if you’re not interested, just say so!”

“What?” Penny frowns. “What are you talking about? Interested in what? Calcium chloride?”

“No, in me,” Agatha says. “Interested in dating me.”

“What,” Penny says, and spills powdered iron all over the table.

First date:

“I can’t believe you didn’t realize I was hitting on you,” Agatha said. “It’s been weeks.”

“I didn’t know you liked girls!” Penny protests.

“I wore a pride shirt!”

“That’s just a rainbow!”

“I asked you out on dates! I complimented you! I fluttered my eyelashes at you!” Agatha shakes her head. “Face it, Penny. You just couldn’t see-”

“Don’t you dare-”

“-the chemistry between us.”

So she does it, takes Frankie’s hand underneath the table, and if anyone else notices, they don’t so much as blink.

Her french fries are cold and soggy, and the smell of hamburgers and french fry oil is kind of making her sick, but Britta’s having a pretty good night.
