Me, preparing to look at my J&R draft: oh god it's going to be awful I'll have to delete everything to fit with the new outline oh god
Me, looking at the outline:
Me, still looking: okay.
Me, still looking:
Me, still looking: okay.
So I don't need to douse my deeply, deeply neglected draft document with agent orange. I can still use most of it. Which is good! It means, once I recover from my post-fic-completion doldrum I'll be able to turn around and update J&R quickly.

Alright before I head into the finale episode…
This is the first time I would call this show cringe. Look. It’s hard, I know, trying to translate kickass fight scenes into shoddy live action with young actors that are already pretty stiff… But yeesh. 😬 Katara vs Paku. I’ve been trying to avoid negativity for this show (so. Everything about it. Any spoilers at all.), but I did accidentally glance someone saying this fight sucked bc it lacked Katara’s rage, and I wholeheartedly agree. What they’re doing with Sokka’s character isn’t all that bad but I feel like they’re really missing the mark with Katara.
Also,
Yue.
Why……..why does she look like that. 😬😬😬 The wardrobe department has been killing it thus far why does her wig look so much like a wig. Something’s wrong with it. Also, fuck you her hair is white. Not silver. >:T OH THATS IT. HER FUCKIN EYES!!! WHERE ARE HER ETHEREAL MOON BLUE EYES!!!
I’m Big Mad about this bc I’m Gay and I Love Yue, and this version isn’t doing it for me. But also…. ashtwbsgsgtffwb 🫱they gave her and sokka a better in.
But they also took away the Tragic™️ backstory that fuels her sacrifice. 🫲
🫱but they gave her more agency in her life
She’s a bender now???🫲
🫱also sokka. Man. Cmon. You know I’m a diehard yukka shipper (and tokka and zukka but that’s neither here nor there), but you had chemistry with suki this time! She was down bad for you! What’re you doing?? And what’s with the other offhanded girlies you were mentioning in that bad-paced cold open the other episode? It worked in the cartoon bc suki taught you to Respect Women but not much else. You shits actually like, bonded this time. Like okay, you’ve been given more and possibly better reasons to crush on Yue, but in doing so…Yue has stupid ass reasons to like you. Y’all let Sokka say “ass” but draw the line at him having an affair with the princess?? The wholeass point was that he brings freedom and agency into her life! That’s what makes her sacrifice so tragic! But now, by “solving” her agency issues, they’ve gutted the interpersonal relationship of these characters! Damn! That’s what this whole adaptation is! Like I do not for a second believe that Aang is actually close friends with Katara and Sokka. I think he’s spent more time bonding with Zuko than anything. And where’s the crush!! Fuck you, I like kataang! And that’s like a huge part of their interpersonal drama! It’s part of their bonding as lifelong friends! Was the secret tunnel sibling thing fun? Sure. But where was Aang? Not even there! This is what I mean! This is great for establishing the sibling relationship between Katara and Sokka, but Aang isn’t even with them most of the time! They barely feel like roommates! Acquaintances! COWORKERS!! I will take a thousand cringey 12-year-with-a-crush interactions over whatever this is!

Here's the conclusion to the longest atla meta I ever wrote (about platonic love in the show) for all the old and new fans coming into the fandom (def spoilers):
Tumblr media
"Ideally, within the morality of the series (at least as it appears to us with no regard for whatever limits or self-censorship occurred due to its era of production and child-friendly requirements), “friends'' are maintained alongside romantic partnerships. Both Zuko and Aang’s separate romantic relationships blossom within the same episode that they declare their “friendship.” In fact, a vital plotline is the development of Zuko’s relationship with Aang’s romantic interest. While anyone in the fandom is well aware of the popular interpretation of romantic affection between Zuko and Katara because of their shared narrative, I have to point out that romantic feelings across the series are made extremely explicit through statements, blushes, and kisses. Zuko’s relationship with Katara can be better understood in the light of the coming-of-age counternarrative: While the love interest often serves as a catalyst for separation for a homosocial relationship, the friendly relationship with Aang’s love interest—seeking her forgiveness, respecting her power, calling on her support, etc—is vital for Zuko to ultimately create an environment of peace in which he and Aang can fulfill their destined “friendship.”
We can look at Katara’s femininity as the most important device for manifesting Aang and Zuko’s eventual union (and therefore the restoration of balance to the world). It’s her rage against misogyny that frees Aang from his iceberg, midwifing him into the world again after his arrested development, the complete opposite of a Wendy figure. It’s her arms that hold Aang in the pieta after his death in the Crossroads of Destiny, positioning her as a divine God-bearer. Afterwards, its her hands that resurrect Aang so that they together can fulfill his destiny. It will be these same hands with this same holy water that resurrect Zuko in the finale. Only through Katara’s decided blessing could Aang and Zuko proceed toward the fated reunion of their souls.
The importance of this critical relationship to femininity becomes relevant to a scene in “Emerald Island Players” that one might note as an outstanding moment of gay panic. Zuko and Aang, watching their counterparts on stage, cringe and shrink when, upon being saved by The Blue Spirit character in the play, Aang’s performer declares “My hero!” Instead of the assumption of homophobia, I wonder whether we might read Aang and Zuko’s responses as discomfort with the misogynistic heterosexual dynamics the declaration represents. Across the board, Avatar subverted the damsel in distress trope. There’s a-whole-nother essay to be written on all the ways it goes about this work, but the events in “The Blue Spirit” certainly speak to this subversion. It’s quite explicit that Zuko, after breaking Aang’s chains, is equally dependent on Aang for their escape. And, by the end of the actual episode, the savior role is reversed as Aang drags an unconscious Zuko away from certain death. To depict these events within the simplistic “damsel in distress” scenario, as The Ember Island Players do, positions Aang as a subordinately feminized colonial subject, denies him his agency, and depicts the relationship as something merely romantic, devoid of the equalizing platonic force that actually empowers them. The moment in the play is uncomfortable for Aang and Zuko because it makes Zuko the hero and Aang the helpless object. Aang is explicit about his embarrassment over his feminized and infantilized depiction in the play. And Zuko, newly reformed, is embarrassed to see, on one hand, his villainy throughout the play and, on the other hand, see how his character is positioned as as a savior to the person who has actually saved him.
At the heart of the series is not the idea of a chosen one or savior. Instead, we are saved by the ability for one person to see themselves in another person and to feel that same person equally understands their own soul. This is the ideal of platonic love. Platonic love between two matured boys—two boys within whose memories and bodies bare the scars of their queer sensitivities—is an essential part of the future of peace.
Many fans have a sense of this, labeling the relationship as “brotp” and “platonic soulmates.” I simply encourage people to acknowledge that platonic love, especially in this context, is not a limit. There is no “no homo” joke here. When we remark on the platonic love between Zuko and Aang (and across media more generally) we are precisely making room for friendship, romance, and whatever else it could mean, whatever else it might become.
While I find Legend of Korra lacking and in some ways detrimental to appreciating the original series, it’s finale interestingly parallels and extends this reading of platonic love in a sapphic vein. And most recently, She-ra Princess of Power was able to even more explicitly realize these dynamics in the relationship between Adora and Catra. Let’s simply acknowledge that Aang and Zuko’s relationship blazed the trail: that peace, happiness, hope, and freedom could all hinge on a “friendship,” because a “friend” was never supposed to be set apart from or less than other kinds of relationships. For the ways it disregards gender, disregards individualism, disregards dominion--platonic love is the foundation of any meaningful relationship. And a meaningful relationship is the foundation for a more peaceful world."

I have been deeply entrenched in shipping culture since I was 11 and rooting for Aang and Katara (I wanted Zuko for myself so I’d get mad at everyone suggesting Zuko and Katara. I have since seen the light. #zukka4ever), but I don’t remember ever being as invested in characters love lives (or, rather, sexualities) more so than Michael Wheeler and Edmundo Diaz.
Mike (Stranger Things) and Eddie (9-1-1) are very similar. A few examples:
- they both are incredibly complex characters that make poor decisions when it comes to their female love interests.
- they both have a canonically queer best friend! And both of their best friends (Will and Buck) are often infantilized by their respective fandoms when, in fact, both are incredibly capable and smart.
- they both seem to have this intense need to conform to societal standards (though they come from different places because of how different their circumstances are).
- both are extremely queer coded.
Stranger Things is a brilliant show. The fantasy horror is the first of its kind and something that has paved the way for many others. 9-1-1 is one of the most watched network television shows currently streaming, and though it’s not the first of its kind, it is certainly unique. Both are great shows, and both have EXTREME potential to make queer media history. Byler and Buddie.
I’ve been thinking about this a little bit, but in a way, Stranger Things AND 9-1-1 have written themselves into a corner with Mike and Eddie. See, a lot of what they do doesn’t make sense unless you view their motivations with a queer lens. Mike treating his breakup with El as a joke, but his fight with Will as something dire. Eddie saying dating feels like a performance (and breaking up with Ana, hottest woman ever, because he had panic attacks imagining their future? So unserious). There’s so much more evidence, but my point is that if Stranger Things makes Mike straight, it will automatically make Mike the ultimate asshole of the show. If 9-1-1 makes Eddie straight, well…most of his actions with Shannon, Ana, and Marisol will not have made sense (or at least not to me). Genuinely, the only way these characters can make it out is if they are gay. Not just gay, but also deeply in love with their best friends.
I’ve never felt this with any other show, but Eddie and Mike have this one major similarity, and it’s that they are either the most well written, beautifully complex characters ever to exist, or they are the biggest disappointments any show will ever have. And it’s weird, but that difference hinges on whether or not they have feelings for their best friends.
[also, yall are welcome to disagree with me, but pls be respectful. I don’t mind disagreements, but i would prefer name calling not be part of it. This is MY opinion, I don’t expect everyone to think the same as me]

My current obsession for Steve having his sexuality crisis in canon doesn’t involve the Robin speech. I love Robin, I am Robin, but she deserves rest, god dammit. And I have come up with a great way for her to get her rest and to be a supportive friend.
————————-
Steve and her are having movie night (is this post Eddie, is this pre Eddie, doesn’t really matter but because I love steddie I am doing post Eddie) and Steve got to pick so they’re watching Grease.
Robin hates Grease, even if the music is fun, she just finds it tacky and cliche. She won’t deny the appeal of Sandy’s leather outift at the end though.
Steve loves Grease. The music is fun and since he met Robin she’s been slowly, and very subtly, pushing him to allow himself to enjoy things that his father forced him to hate. (Am I including my Steve likes make up headcanon in this? Absolutely.) She’s gone shopping with him and encouraged him to try on the sweaters in softer colors he always stares at but never touches. He starts growing out his hair. Robin has been a breath of fresh air since they met and she has always pushed him without making it obvious so he doesn’t panic.
The next opportunity for her brand of eye opening comes when they get to Greased Lightning. They’re both pretty tipsy and Steve randomly blurts out. “Wow he’s hot.” Robin actual chokes on her mouth full of popcorn and has to chug her beer to wash it down.
“I’m sorry, what?” Steve looks at Robin with a frown, raising an eyebrow.
“What? I said he was hot, because he is.”
“Steve that’s- since when do you notice attractive men?” He’s still frowning at her, as if she’s asking completely ridiculous questions
“I mean, always? It’s just something guys do, they can recognize when a guy is hot and whatever.” Robin just blinks, then blinks again before nodding to herself. She knows what she has to do, so she says okay and they go back to watching the movie.
The next time she’s at Steve’s she brings the magazine she had bought in Chicago a couple years ago. She had found this tiny store that sold a ton of gay media and it was like being in heaven. This particular magazine had a lot of quotes from people about their experiences growing up queer and she knows for a fact that there is one story in there that should shake something loose in Steve. So she leaves the magazine on his bed when she goes to steal a sweater from him. Robin hears nothing for two days after that when at 11:30 at night she hears the pinging of rocks at her window. Rolling her eyes, she gets up and opens the window, and then sure enough in pops Steve a moment later, clambering his way inside her bedroom.
“I think I might like guys. I um… actually, I think I might like Eddie? Which might be why I thought John Travolta was so hot suddenly, because sure I’ve thought he was good looking but not like crazy insane hot before. Then suddenly we’re watching Grease and Danny Zuko is all kinds of hot, and then I found this magazine, I think you left it at mine accidentally. But it had all these stories and there was this one guy who said he had always noticed attractive men growing up but he thought that was just what all guys thought, he liked girls so he wasn’t gay, but then he met a particular guy and they ended up kissing and he realized that he maybe liked boys more than he should and when he asked someone else about guys noticing attractive men they said that is not what straight guys do and he realized that he wasn’t straight at all. And then I started thinking because that’s how I’ve always felt, right? But I didn’t think I was gay, but apparently you can actually like both so I don’t have to be gay to like guys, and then I started thinking about Grease which made me think about Eddie and, oh god, Robin, I think I might be in love with him?”
She knew the magazine would help, but not this much. She also had never heard Steve speak so much at once, they had clearly been spending too much time together if he was rambling like that.
“Okay, Steve, take a deep breath. Are you coming out to me right now?” He stops his frantic pacing that he had started as soon as her window was shut, staring at her for a second before collapsing on the bed next to her.
“I think so? The magazine said bi-bicy-bisen-“
“Bisexual?” Steve snaps and points at her with a grin.
“Yeah, that! I didn’t know that was even a thing! It just… it feels like everything makes a little more sense to me, y’know?” She smiled, ruffling his hair.
“And the Eddie thing?” Robin cackles when Steve flushes bright red.
“Shut up! I actually think I might be in love with him and I don’t know what to do. Like, I know he’s gay but I don’t know if he likes me.”
“Steve, he has been flirting with you since you two met in March.”
“What?!??” She dissolves into giggles and they spend the night together, talking about every interaction he’s ever had with Eddie.
A week has barely gone by when Steve comes into work, his hair a mess, with a giant smile and his neck covered in bruises.
“I think I have a boyfriend.” Robin just collapses into a fit of laughter. She’s so glad the magazine trick worked because she’s never seen Steve this happy.

What I love rn about the Ninjago Live action panic is that it has almost nothing about the plot. It's about the collective and primal fear of Chris Pratt and whitewashing.
I have seen a couple plot posts, but like there was nothing to prepare us for the crackfic high-school au of the other movie. So I don't think there's any need to try and guess the plot.
Maybe we should make our own movie. Like guys, we could make the anime everyone lowkey wants from the creators. Almost everyone I know has some version of a plot fixing rewrite or retelling thats almost beat for beat with the source material. But like better with longer character arcs and more cultural accuracy.
Like besides humanity's allergy to group projects, why don't we just do it???.
Like I'll start with the basis of my retelling: S1 but with an already teenage Lloyd releasing the serpentine as a misguided attempt to gain his father's attention and being a shadow villain to the serpentine problem. Followed by a zuko style redemption arc when it is accidentally revealed that he's the green ninja in a combat situation.
The first half of the season is about the teams backstories and picking up the lore crumbs on the serpentine and why Garmadon and Wu separated while trying to figure out who has motive, and opportunity to release the serpentine. And since the Golden weapons are conduits for their power. Their true potential is learning to control their power separately from their weapons by becoming "whole" and reaching their full potential. The second half of the season reveals Lloyd's story and his shift from causing harm to gain attention to just asking for it and learning to be loved. (Yes, and sorry its Lloyd centric but he's the villain of the story untill...) Then the serpentine realize they're better together than apart and relase the Great Devourer and you essentially know the rest.
It would have a rather grim/serious tone and probably have some mixture of the demonslayer or attack on titan style. Leaning into the Japanese lore and possibly leaving hints about the nature of Oni and Dragons as more myth and legend than fact. Until a *minor god (the devourer) is released and this leaves the door open for other things to slowly become real. Personally I think the dragons could have been more sentient and revered than was shown, and I'd probably change Lloyd's name to be something Japanese with "Lloyd Garmadon" as a title he gave himself to be more like his father and it just sticks in the others minds so they keep calling him that until he's ready to shed that skin. I'd probably change the others names too or at least make them region specific. I hate hate hate childs play so I'd delete it. And Nya would take up her samurai training after being kidnapped so she doesn't feel like a burden on her brother. And uh Cole will be gay but due to the time period he feels unsafe telling others and learns to trust them. Also I'd probably kick the time period back to late Edo era Japan because the way of the ninja was still studied but becoming harder to come by. And gives a reason why there are no other Ninjutstu masters or students running around. So they're be reviving a somewhat dying art and be praised for it by commoners.
So now I ask. If YOU could retell Ninjago in a episodic anime how would you do it? What does it follow? What would you remove and why?

Zukka AU where they're stuck somewhere together (during like late book 2) in like a fire nation prison together and they're both just denying their feelings for each other the entire time. Sokka having thoughts like "I wan't to kiss him" every few minutes and then writing it off as 'oddly pleasant reoccurring intrusive thoughts" to the point where he doesn't even really believe it at this point, because he knows if it was intrusive thoughts he wouldn't feel such deep desire to act on the thoughts. Zuko falling for Sokka but thinking Sokka hates him, thinking Sokka's judging him whenever Zuko catches him staring. What do you think?
--- Ohoohoh i like that idea ! Kind of a prolonged 'stuck underground in ba sing se' situation Zuko and Katara had going on, where they get to actually get to know one another beyond 'we are on opposite sides of this war'.
Bonus points if Sokka is still in his 'vehemently insists he only likes girls' stage. And PERSONALLy I would think that the actual romance blossoms after the gaang breaks Sokka out of prison and ( as a fun parallel to Sokka 1000% being okay with leaving Zuko for dead at the north pole ) Sokka insists they have to bring Zuko. In prison it is just... gay panic after gay panic with both of them being extremely clueless and oblivious. With the 'oh my god our hands touched!' kind of innocence hah. Cue the canon kind of progression post-prison of the gaang learning to trust Zuko. And Sokka continues to have bisexual panic. Totally writes it off as 'prison does weird things to a man' type of thing.
Zuko of course is pretty much fully aware he likes boys the entire time, and Sokka is... Not as big of an idiot as he always assumed, and actually.. Really handsome up close, and.. wow those are some inappropriate thoughts to have about one of the pivotal members of the opposition.... Cue much much much much pining.

i do wonder if i like that fic i recced so much bc during the initial hakoda&zuko fanfic boom i read so many fics where zuko was this nervous little traumatized baby who couldn't handle being around a dad figure at all and would have a panic attack if hakoda slightly raised his voice and so a fic that's like "yeah people might assume that's zuko's reaction to dad figures bc of his trauma but actually he'd be awkward around hakoda bc he's a gay teen and hakoda's hot" was just such a breath of fresh air. like i'm not sure the author meant to be like actively firing shots at that kind of fic but it does read that way

I LOVED THE NEW CHAPTERRR I didn't know how much i needed all these adult men interactions until you fed them to me, specially Bato + Jee!! tbh honest i kinda suspected (and wished) since last chapter that they would have something at some point, but hesitated abt it because for some reason i always tought Jee was way too old for him idk 😭 anyways i love them and i have the hope that you will let them be happy... Also Chang and Zuko's reunion was amazing, neither of them really share their feelings and hug like that commonly, so the scene felt very emotional.
Anyways I just needed to scream to someone about the chapter, and who better than the author? 😍
I'm very thankful for this fic, like, this many great chapters, and for free??!!
OMG I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT AHHHHH!!!
So the Jee Bato thing I have been excited about since like…. The middle of RIA. I’m not saying anything will come out of it but it’s fun to give Jee gay panic and Bato just soak up every ounce of it. (They honestly both deserve it because their lives have been dull when it comes to the romance department)
But yea!! Last chapter was dilf-tastic. & I’m very pleased you enjoyed it :)
ALWAYS COME SCREAM AT ME I LOOOVVVEEEE ITTT!!!! Haha!!

MELON LORD!
Tumblr media
An obscure character who doesn't appear until the Finale of Avatar the Last Airbender. They are the deadliest opponent Team Avatar ever faces including Ozai later in the finale. And like any good villain instead of fracturing the force to make them go off on their own and leaving Aang alone. The Melon Lord forces the Team to work together and utilize their strengths. And makes Aang face his doubts about defeating Ozai and killing him. But also brings out that the rest of Team Avatar have no qualms about Ozai falling even Zuko. Which is why it falls to Aang to find another solution of his own. Truly the Melon Lord is the series most iconic villain even if they are only briefly in the series. But if anime like say DeathNote has taught me anything, a character can show up for 5 seconds and get an entire backing behind it.
2. Kanaya
Tumblr media
She's a lesbian alien vampire with a fashion sense and a chainsaw and she uses the blood of her enemies as her lipstick. What the fuck isn't there to like?
3. Kanji Tatsumi
Tumblr media
He's just a REALLY GOOD GUY, okay? Dude is just trying to make it out of here alive and live his life. After experiencing gay panic by being attracted to a masculine presenting person.
4. Astarion
Tumblr media
The sexiest character all through the alpha pre-release, is the only person not trying to sleep with me. He's there for if I want to murder a son a bitch or if I was to take another path out. Dude has been nothing but a supportive bro from the onset. Respect.
5. Makima
Tumblr media
We here on this blog respect women's rights and women's VERY WRONGS

In every FromSoft game, I find at least one character who I put my entire all behind. But is the first time, there was an ending that felt worth while in pursuing who I was happy to follow til the ends of the earth. It didn't feel like I was fulfilling my destiny but helping someone else fulfill theirs. Even if she is the reason the game started to begin with.
10. Samwise Gamgee

What is there to say? Just Samwise Gamgee.

Hi, I really love reading your blog, also, thanks for sharing your posts. Even if I'm not the one who asked your otps, do you mind if I asked why you love those couples (your otps)? You can pick at least 3 couples, if you want to write the reasons.....
Oops I completely forgot about this ask sorry-
SO I'm gonna pick so much more than 3 ships lmaooo be ready for my rambling <3
Zukka (Zuko/Sokka), from Avatar the last airbender : they're simply idiots in love. I'm not sure I can explain why I love them so much. I think they're beautiful together and that their personalities complete each others.
SuguSato (Gojo Satoru/Geto Suguru) from Jujutsu Kaisen : AH. I won't talk about them or else I'll be writing all night. They're my current hyperfixation (since 2 years). I already made too much posts about them. They smart and idiots in the same time, they're kids who are learning how to love, they're the definition of bromance, the incarnation of gay/bi panic & awareness.
BokuAka (Bokuto Kotaro/Akaashi Keiji) AND KuroKen (Kuroo Tetsurou/Kenma Kozume), from Haikyuu : yes I have to put both because I am not able to choose only one. I know they're in highschool but they're just married. They're two married couples. They're soulmates. They are perfect for each other. They love each other so fucking much it's overwhelming. It's a captain/setter relationship that is so pure and wholesome. They're not even in the same year yet they fit each other perfectly. Also, they're sexy.
Karushuu (Akabane Karma/Asano Gakushuu), from Assassination Classroom : they're just the whole Enemies to Lovers trope for highschoolers and it's so fucking hilarious to imagine them flirting and bickering at the same time. I can imagine them in so many situations, and that's why I keep writing fanfiction about them. They have the exact same personality but just, slightly to the left, and that somehow makes them total opposite. Yet the relationship works.
EraserMic (Aizawa Shouta/Yamada Hizashi) from My Hero Academia : married couple too but they are adults and they also might have adopted a kid (Eri) or 20 (the entire 1-A + Hitoshi). It's the Sunshine/Moonlight trope, one hyperactive extravert in love with the tired emo introvert, and they work very well together. I also write fanfic about them. I had a 4 year long hyperfixation on them.
AziraCrow (Aziraphale/Crowley) from Good Omens : I don't need to say anything, just watch the show. It's on Amazon Prime. Alright, okay, I will say one thing : Genderqueer In Love.
Stucky (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes), from the MCU : It has been a while since I've read or saved anything about them but I will never forget how much I love them. I will never NOT be mad about the queerbait. They are in love till the end of the line, they cannot be separated, they are a whole pack yet Marvel put them apart. Just, let them be together, I'm begging you.
Alright that's all for today ! Really I can talk for hours about each one of these ships, I'd write entire paragraphs if you allowed me to. But there's like 7 couples here so it'd be way too long if I say everything I have to say about them lmaooooooo

Forced to choose
@febuwhump
Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender, Pairing: Zukka Modern AU in which Zuko is the captain of the fencing team.
You have thirty seconds in which to read the fic below the cut or follow this link to AO3, or I start killing hostages.
Sokka sat on his bed wrapped up in his blanket, a blue cocoon with wave patterns embroidered into it by Gran-gran from when he was still in elementary school. He and that blanket had a lot of history. It had comforted him on a lot of cold nights, but he’d also nearly thrown it aside many times in his efforts to project manliness and maturity in all aspects of his life. Now that he was past some of that, he brought it with him to college. It made him feel secure, and that’s what he needed most right now.
He had before him a list of options, each conceived of in fits of blind panic and then carefully considered in the lulls of lucidity that bridged each one. Today, he had woken up, made himself a microwave breakfast, sent in his late assignments to his professors, and watched a few episodes of his favorite telenovela. Thus far, he hadn’t had a single panic attack. No heart palpitations, no shaking hands, no spikes of adrenaline. He could, in that case, look at the list again and make a choice.
Item number one: break up with Zuko. He almost crossed it out when he wrote it, but then the more he thought about it the more it began to make a kind of sense. He, Sokka, was still very much in the closet, and still working through a lot of issues that made him a bad boyfriend. Zuko didn’t deserve to deal with his bullshit, because Zuko was kind and amazing and deserved all the happiness in the world. Sokka wasn’t so arrogant as to think Zuko couldn’t do much, much better.
The problem, of course, was that Sokka didn’t want Zuko to do better. He wanted Zuko to do him.
Item number two: deny everything. His dad hadn’t directly accused him of being gay, and Zuko had said that the topic of them dating hadn’t come up directly. There was wiggle room there, and Katara could be counted on to cover for him as long as he didn’t do anything to piss her off. If Zuko came with them on their summer vacation, they could maintain strategic ambiguity until Zuko went home. Sokka would be able to explain away any slip-ups, and his family wouldn’t be any the wiser. And if anyone asked him directly? He wasn’t above lying through his teeth.
Of course, this strategy had failed before and caused him and Zuko a lot of trouble already. So that wasn't ideal.
Item number three: just come out already. It was out of the question. Sokka was not prepared, not mentally or emotionally, for his cousins ragging on him for being gay. Actually, even if they didn’t, he wasn’t prepared for them ragging on him for being a sad closeted loser who wasn’t worth dating. And they would rag on him, one way or the other. As far as he was aware, he wouldn’t be the first…well, he wasn’t gay, but he was dating a man, so what was the difference in their eyes? Whatever, he wouldn’t be the first not-straight person in his family. But with how tight-knit they all were, his aunts and uncles, his cousins, Gran-gran and the other elders, every little detail was a potential piece of ammunition. A possible weakness.
Sokka wasn’t like Katara, who could fight their cousins and earn their respect. If he fought and won, he’d get in trouble and they’d get revenge. If he fought and lost, he’d get ridiculed. The only way to win was to do so before the battle began. But coming out didn’t end the battle, not by any means.
Sokka sniffled and wiped the tears from his eyes. He hated this. This fear that gripped his heart and paralyzed his mind. He had to do something. The cat was out of the bag! Not making a choice would just mean that someone else would decide whether him being not-straight was a good thing or a bad thing, whether or not he broke up with Zuko or lied about their relationship. He put the list down and reached for a box of tissues to blow his nose. Then he picked up his phone.
“Hey, Zuko,” he said. “No, I’m not okay. Can you come over? I just…I need you right now. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do, about my dad, and this whole thing, and…and I can’t. I just can’t do this by myself. Yeah. I’m in my room. No, my roommate’s not home right now, I think he’s at football practice. Yeah. See you soon. I love you.”
