Gawgaw

The Gawgaw is a cursed human who is forced to transform into a horrendous being during Christmas night should they go to sleep on Christmas eve.

In Maltese culture, it is said that anyone born on the 24th of December is cursed to become a Gawgaw. The reason for this is that the Maltese ancestors believed that it wasn’t right for anyone to take precedence on the night when the only individual and event that matters is the birth of Jesus Christ. As punishment for this, they believed that the afflicted who go to sleep on Christmas eve will always have a nightmare at midnight. While still asleep, the person turns into the Gawgaw and spends the night running around the streets looking for naughty children.

The Gawgaw has the ability to smell misbehaving children and after capturing them, he takes them to a land of hunger and suffering.

No one has seen him, no one knows its shape or knows what the Gawgaw looks like, but it is said to be an ugly monster or spirit tied to Christmas. Although never officially seen, the locals would constantly exaggerate and increase the infamy of the monster.

The only thing that is certain is that the afflicted turn back into their human form at sunrise with only bruises and covered in feathers without any knowledge of how they got to their location.

The best way to prevent a transformation is to not sleep until midnight.

Parents who have been cursed with such a child do everything in their abilities to keep the child from sleeping until midnight on Christmas eve to avoid them turning into a Gawgaw. A way they did this was asking their child to count the holes of either a sieve or a strainer between eleven and midnight.

Cringetober day 5 - Angel x Demon / 100% Saturation (because I couldn't think of anything for Gijinka)

This is a redraw of my secondary school art when they were originally angel and demon and a couple. They are currently not angel and demon (one is an automaton and the other a gawgaw/kawkaw/qawqaw/etc.) but for this picture they are.

Oh question to mandarin speakers again!

I'm wondering about the use of ge vs gege and jie/jiejie. Warning I'm influenced a lot by older diaspora and Guangdong/90s gen HK Cantonese, so I'm not sure if this still holds true in the current day. Also, I'm going to be mashing Canto and Mandarin together, so hopefully, this is understandable.

First question!

In the spoken cantonese I'm used to, adult men calling out to other non-blood-related adults using big brother (cantonese: gaw/ a-gaw) and big sister (jie/a-jie), they will use singular gaw/jie over gawgaw/jiejie because the double feels juvenile? Cutesy? Women usage depends on personality type and style. But again, gawgaw/jiejie is seen as more cute/childish.

example: Terrance-gaw... A-gaw come get your sandwich! Jie, you forgot to flush the toilet again! Jiejie find my socks for me~~~ Gawgaw give me money~~~

The exceptions is when they refer to someone as someone's gaw or jie. They will interchangeably be like that person is [name]'s gaw/a-gaw, or she is the jiejie not the mui.

Little brother is sai-lao (small-guy), and didi is from mothers to babies. Little sister is mui/a-mui/muimui. Is mandarin just meimei?

An adult referring to themselves as someone's gege or jiejie will feel like they're being a bit... doting. Example: Jiejie will pay for that meal for you. Gege will buy you that book if you want. Tbh Cantonese is pretty direct so it'll usually just be like "Don't you dare grab that check."

So question is: What is the use case for gege/jiejie for non-blood-related adults in Mandarin? Do the words feel the same? Is the usage different? Does age and gender matter to useage?

Second question!

Growing up, I was always told the difference in the usage for "thank you" was different in mandarin and cantonese. So cantonese had 2 ways of saying thank you -- m-goi (for small favors/being helped like being handed a napkin) and daw-dzieh (big thanks, for gifts and large favors).

While mandarin had just shieh-shieh. This was reflected on the Taiwanese shows I was watching at the time. I don't remember ever hearing daw-shieh in mandarin.

But now, I'm hearing daw-shieh in Chinese period dramas (or daw-dzieh if translated to canto. Also I don't watch much modern day so dunno about there).

Is this a period-drama thing because it's reflecting on how historically Middle-Chinese is closer to Cantonese? Or is it because of usage change? Or regional differences? Or was I taught wrongly?

A Stressful Moment

After all that had happened, the group braced themeselves before entering the domain, expecting the next Emoti-Clone to attack them. But to their surprise, and utter confusion, the domain smelled heavily of cleaning product.

Stressed Reala was easily spotted with a duster in his hand. He was frantically dusting the walls of his domain. "Look at this!!" He exclaimed. "What am I, a bloody slave that's only meant to do ALL of the housework!?"

He then noticed Balan, Lance, Aria, Kaylo, and NiGHTS staring at him with bewilderment in his eyes. "Great!" He huffed. "The guests have already arrived and the place isn't properly cleaned yet!!"

"You were here this entire time…cleaning?" NiGHTS wasn't exactly sure how to react. Plus, the only things that the normal Reala would clean were his room and his laundry. That was about it.

"Yeah!" Stressed Reala replied, slightly glaring at NiGHTS. "Plus, I had to wash those dirty dishes that you didn't wash properly, fold Lance's clothes that he refused to do, and feed those Tims who act like the Drops are going to get up and run away from them!"

Aria noticed a coffee mug with coffee stains on it. "Were you drinking Balan's and Lance's coffee?" She asked.

"I've had about 13 cups of that stuff," Stressed Reala answered. "And still I'm so tired! But there's still so much work to be done!!"

"13 cups!?" Kaylo was shocked to hear about this. "Why so much!?"

"You try having so much work to do with no time to rest, then come and tell me!" Stressed Reala started to grumble as he kept on dusting away at the walls.

"Stressed Reala, we understand you have a lot on your list," Lance spoke. "But we have this task that we were hoping that you could assist."

Stressed Reala snapped his head to face Lance. A frown marred his face. "Make it quick! I have to walk Gawgaw as well as take out the trash when I'm done here!"

"We promise never to bother you again," Balan promised. "But would you be so kind as to lead us to the heart of your domain?"

Stressed Reala heaved an annoyed sigh. "Fine! It's really, really messy, though." He then tossed the duster aside, grumbling about how "there's more work to be done".

"Follow me," Stressed Reala ordered. "You'll have to mind the clutter, though. I don't want to hear anyone tripping and complaining that they hurt their knees simply because they couldn't be bothered to watch where they're going."

The group looked at each other and shrugged before they followed the orange Emoti-Clone.

True to his word, the corridor was really cluttered. Stacks of boxes, crates, and trash bags were scattered all around. And the boxes and crates were covered with dust. "When was the last time this place was cleaned?" NiGHTS asked. The group took care not to trip over everything.

"How would I know?" Stressed Reala snapped. "I've been too busy cleaning the entrance! See, I never have time for ANYTHING!"

But it wasn't until they all made it to the heart of the domain that something stopped them…

…An extremely foul stench.

The Harry merch makes me so mad bc it’s just lazy and LiveNation is notorious for producing low quality merch for delivery. So on top of the design being bad, when it arrives it looks awful and their refund policy makes it impossible for you to really get your money back. So many fans make such cute merch that I wish his team would just reach out to them and work with them/partner up so that these small artists have help with mass production. Those Etsy crew necks w embroidery are to die for!

i know!! and tbh i really loved hs1 merch especially the crew necks like for the most part the pricing and quality were good and shipping was relatively quick but every single time someone uses live nation this happens with their merch i hate it

Utilization of Edible Coatings as an Alternative of Fruit Wax for Lakatan Banana (Musa acuminata)

This study focuses on how  edible coating from chitosan and gawgaw can be used as an alternative to using synthetic wax. As it is organic, it will not pose a big threat to the environment.  The researchers will formulate the type of coating which is based on gawgaw and chitosan  that can be used for lengthening the shelf life of bananas. This is important so that the quality of the bananas will meet the standards of the market and will not violate certain laws and policies administered by the different agencies responsible for food safety. Coating the bananas with gawgaw and chitosan could lead to better export standards and protection from certain plant diseases that may affect the quality of the banana. This is important since this could save the economy from potential loss. Other than these aspects, this would also be a healthier step towards food preservation by eliminating the use of harmful chemicals found in different types of fruit waxing methods.

If Square Enix sold more Balan Wonderworld merchandise…

This is actually a follow-up to my previous post where I wrote how I would make Balan Wonderworld a better game. Here, I will tell you guys what kind of merchandise would be sold if Balan Wonderworld become more popular and more well-liked. So here are some guesses.

Plushes: As you all are aware, Square Enix has the Tim plush on its online store. It's only in yellow with bunny-like ears and blue eyes. But if Balan Wonderworld became more popular and well-liked, more Tim plushes would probably be made. And they would come in several colors and styles. Here are the other colors and styles.

—Cyan with cat-like ears, brown eyes, and dark stars

—Pink with spiky hair, cyan eyes, and a white belly

—Red with no ears, green eyes, and dark stripes

—Light purple with bear-like ears, red eyes, and dark spots

—White with no ears, purple eyes, and no patterns

Of course, they should also make plushes of the Negati too. Bonus points if they make them roughly the same size as the Tim plushes. Some of the Negati plushes that I think they should make are the following.

—Kosokoso (Squirrel-like Negati)

—Guragura (The small Negati that first appear in Chapter 1)

—Sutasuta (Kiwi bird-like Negati)

—Balibali (Wizard-like Negati)

—Gawgaw (Dog-like Negati)

—Kurukuru (Umbrella-like Negati)

There could also be plushes of Balan, Lance, Leo, Emma, and the twelve Inhabitants themselves.

Collectables: There should be some merchandise that are considered collectables, meaning you can collect as many as you want. This will include the following.

—Funko Pops of the characters

—Pins of the stained glass windows of each Chapter

—Keychains of each of the characters

—Keychains of each Drop color

—Drinking glass cups with bamboo lids and designs of the characters around them. (Stainless steel straws included)

—Cass's bowtie (comes in four colors: fuschia, purple, blue, peach)

—Fiona's hairtie (comes in four color combinations: blue/yellow, magenta/orange, purple/bubblegum pink, teal/navy

—Iben's Jacket (comes in four colors: lavender, pale yellow, turquoise, magenta)

—Leo's hairband

Accessories: There definitely should be some accessory merchandise as well. Here are some I think Square Enix should sell.

—Purses in the color scheme of each character. (See my purse artwork for reference.)

—Wallets that match the purse

—Jewelry inspired by each of the Inhabitants

—Journals with artwork of each character on it

—Phone cases with the characters, the Tims, and the Negati on them

Display: And of course, I have a few ideas of what merchandise for display that Square Enix should sell.

—A treasure chest full of plastic Drops in each color.

—Posters of each of the Inhabitants and their Chapter.

—Musical jewelry boxes that play each Chapter's theme song after you wind it up. (See my jewelry box artwork for reference)

—Cushions in the characters' color schemes.

—Throw blankets with each Chapter's art on it

—Tim piggy banks (Same color as the plushies.)
