When we were kids, we didn't have access to cool power tools. Every summer, when the soapbox derby race was coming, we'd break into my neighbour's garage while he was at work. Then, we'd use his drill press, lathe, table saw, all the fun tools. Over the course of a week, a race car was produced, which is more than the workshop ever made during the rest of the year.
Sure, we could have asked him if we could have borrowed his tools, but no doubt he would want to be there to supervise. And then he'd want to help. We'd never get done while we were busy indulging the suburb-tinged fantasies of someone who didn't take wood shop and chose instead to idly worship at the altar of Television Presents: The Fantasy of Bob Vila in adulthood.
One year, Old Man Garrett got a security system. Probably this was because Ted (fucking Ted) didn't clean up the sawdust that one time like we asked him to. The old man must have seen the footprint, and realized that he did not wear size-seven Nikes. Child thieves, casing his precious table saw! Now, our humble breaking-and-entering had become significantly more difficult than "reach a coat hanger under the door and pull the emergency release."
With the help of some of the high-school kids who were taking electronics class, we managed to defeat the security system. We did so using an ancient Japanese technique known as "distract Old Man Garrett while he's setting it, and then cut the wires to the panel." I think it loses something in translation, but you get the gist of it. That year's car was especially sweet.
In adulthood, I got drunk and bragged to some work buddies about our little scam. They responded in abject horror, because I was still occupying the weird hump in the middle of a normal distribution of "acceptable crimes." It was terrifying to them to see one of their own, one of the suburbanites, speak openly about largely-harmless property crimes. What if we had been hurt, they shrieked. Around the water cooler, I would become a pariah, unless I could make amends.
I did hunt down Old Man Garrett after that, still feeling the sting of rejection. He was still on the property, and he still had a beautiful collection of immaculate cabinet-making tools in the garage. I rang his doorbell and, when he answered, I told him the whole story. He laughed.
"I knew it was you dumb shits from the beginning," he bragged. "Fucking Ted -"
"Fucking Ted," I echoed, unconsciously.
"Fucking Ted left his library book on building race cars behind on the workbench that first year. You didn't let him drive, did you?"
I shook my head. "We ran the car into him if the hockey-stick brakes ever failed."
We had a good laugh about the whole thing that evening, and I returned to work with my soul cleansed. It's just a pity Ted didn't know how bad he actually was at crime, before he tried to knock over that liquor store and all.

imagine holding billy in your arms as he lays dying, pat garrett's gun still breathing smoke like a dragon you can't vanquish.
billy's breath is rattling in his chest, each struggling to escape, tears leaking from the corners of his eyes and over his temples. they leave stains on your skirt the color of storm clouds, stains that spread, stains that grow, like a tumor. you aren't crying. you feel as though you are being forced through the eye of a needle, everything inside you crushed and broken to fit, and in the process you are wrung dry.
his hand clutches tightly at your arm, his eyes flitting around blindly, a pair of frightened bluebirds. you stroke his forehead with your other hand as if you're his mother trying to soothe away a fever.
"hush," you whisper. "hush, hush, lie still. don't move too much."
as if it matters. as if it would save him, to lay still as a statue, a marble monument to youth bludgeoned into gray obscurity by a bullet, to tragedy, to a broken future. but you don't know what else to say, how else to comfort him.
he manages to say, in a voice cracked and sharp like shattered porcelain: "i'm scared."
"don't be scared," you say, although you're scared too.
scared of what your life is going to be when his is extinguished. scared of seeing him in every pale dawn and bitter-black night, of hearing his voice at the very edge of your hearing and turning your head toward the specter sound. scared -- even more so -- of forgetting precisely how he looks, how he sounds.
how he feels. how he tastes.
billy whimpers.
"hush," you say again. "just close your eyes, listen to me."
his eyes flutter shut.
"there's nothing to be afraid of." you swallow. "it's just like falling asleep. soon there won't be any more pain. you'll float in my arms, like you're floating in a sweet river. above you there's just blue sky, and the riverbanks are green as emeralds."
his grip on your arm softens.
"when you wake up, you'll be home," you say. "your mother will be there, your father, and joe. they're waiting for you, just like you'll wait for me. someday we'll all be together."
just not today.
"tunstall," he croaks, and you nod.
"yes, and mr. tunstall," you say. "he'll be so proud of you, billy. they all will. you fought so hard, and you've been so brave."
you lean down to press your lips against his forehead, which is clammy and slick with sweat. "you've been so brave," you say again. "i've always been so proud of you, you know that? so proud to be yours."
another kiss to his forehead. you think his skin is even cooler now than it was just a moment before.
"my love," you murmur.
you want to say, don't leave me. you want to beg him to fight, to hang on; but you can't ask that of him. not after everything he's been through, the pain he's suffered in the past and in this moment. it's time for you both to let go.
you hold him like that, hunched over with him cradled in your lap. shielding him, your hair framing his face like a curtain protecting him from the rest of the world. the world that has been so hard on him, the world he is slipping away from by degrees, as though chains are rusting away from a prisoner seeking freedom.
you keep your eyes on his face, his beloved, beautiful face, but you're aware, too, of his grip on your wrist. how it slackens moment by moment, until his fingertips are just barely resting on your sleeve. you hear him trying, fruitlessly, to catch his breath; it almost sounds like he's drowning.
he gasps, as though he's seen something astonishing, although his eyes are still closed. you think -- you're not sure, because your heartbeat is roaring in your ears, like it's attempting to remind you that you're alive despite any desire to the contrary -- that you hear him whisper, "ma?"
his hand slips away from your arm to land on the floor. the soft thump is louder than the gunshot. it echoes and it lacerates, tearing you apart inside.
when they try to take him away from you, the tears come. you struggle the best you can without letting go of him; you clutch him to you with one arm, your free hand curled into claws. you bare your teeth. you scream, you curse -- not epithets, but bitter prayers, as if you're a witch who can work dark magic.
finally, they overpower you.
they bury him. you wish you could burrow into the earth like a worm and lay down there with him.
but you know he wouldn't want that for you. so you live, despite every day, every moment, feeling like a stone in your mouth, weighing you down and entombing your speech. not that you have anything to say, not anymore.
months go by. summer is scorching. you imagine the unforgiving sun burning you up, like a dry leaf caught in a campfire. you imagine yourself as ash, drifting away in the wind.
autumn brings damp rain, keeping everyone inside. it doesn't matter to you. you can hardly bring yourself to leave your bed, despite the memories that lurk in the sheets like fleas, waiting to bite you.
winter is cold and gray, but you hardly notice the snows, the howling winds, the disconsolate pewter skies. if anything, it's only a reflection of how you feel.
and then --
despite the cruelty of the world, the frozen fist of january trying to choke the warmth out of every breath of breeze, out of each brittle beam of sunshine -- despite nothing meaning anything -- despite what feel like the greatest of odds --
spring comes again. flowers push their stubborn, colorful heads up out of the ground. the wind softens. the sun gains strength. you find yourself climbing out of bed; the floors and the chimney are swept, the windows cleaned, dishes and clothes are washed. you prop your front door open so the fresh air can come in.
one morning, you come outside to find a kitten huddled under the rocking chair on your front porch. it mewls, sounding rather cross with you, as though asking what took you so long.
you smile.
you take him inside, pour out a saucer of milk and slice up a piece of chicken. you notice, as you're holding him on your lap, that his eyes are blue.
you name him bonney.

Emmett, Garrett, and Edward(separate) with a mate that when turned has ice abilities(yes like Elsa I can't help it 🤣) as always please and thank you!
❝the cold, never bothered me anyways❞
✭ pairing : garrett x reader , emmett cullen x reader , edward cullen x reader
✭ fandom : twilight
✭ summary : Garrett, Emmett and Edward just learn of their mates gift and let’s just say they are amazed
✭ twilight masterlist
Garrett :
Garrett, the rugged and adventurous vampire nomad, had always been drawn to unconventional beauty and unique experiences. That's why, when he met (Y/N), he couldn't resist her allure. They were two kindred spirits, seeking adventure and excitement in the world, and their connection had grown stronger with each passing day.
One sunny afternoon, Garrett and (Y/N) found themselves lounging in a meadow near the town of Denali. The day was sweltering, the sun blazing overhead, and Garrett couldn't help but voice his thoughts.
"Whew, it's a scorcher today," Garrett remarked, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. "I wish it were cooler, maybe even a snowy day. That would be perfect."
(Y/N) glanced at Garrett, her eyes twinkling with mischief. She had a secret, one she had been waiting for the right moment to reveal. As her hand brushed against a blade of grass, it instantly froze, turning into a delicate icicle.
Garrett watched in astonishment as (Y/N) summoned her icy powers, forming a small flurry of snowflakes that danced around them, cooling the air around them. The sweltering heat gave way to a gentle, refreshing chill.
His eyes widened with wonder as he realized what was happening. "Did you just... make it snow?"
(Y/N) smiled mischievously as she continued to manipulate the ice and snow around them. "I have a little bit of Elsa in me," she admitted, referring to the beloved Disney character with similar powers.
Garrett couldn't contain his excitement. "That's incredible, (Y/N)! You can control the weather?"
With a nod, (Y/N) answered, "It seems that way. I can create snow and ice, even on the hottest of days."
Garrett couldn't resist the urge to playfully scoop up some of the snow (Y/N) had created and toss it in her direction. She giggled as the icy flakes landed on her skin, creating a delightful sensation.
As they enjoyed the unexpected snowfall, Garrett realized that he had found something truly extraordinary in (Y/N). Her unique abilities only added to her allure, and he couldn't wait to explore the world with her, one snowy adventure at a time. This day marked the beginning of a thrilling journey they would embark on together, their love and their lives forever intertwined with the magic of ice and snow.
Emmett Cullen :
Snow blanketed the town of Forks, transforming it into a winter wonderland. It was a day that Emmett Cullen, the jovial and strong member of the Cullen family, had been eagerly anticipating. He and (Y/N), his beloved mate, had planned to spend the day together, reveling in the beauty of the freshly fallen snow.
Emmett's enthusiasm for the day was infectious, and his excitement had been building for weeks. He couldn't wait to see (Y/N)'s reaction to the snowy landscape, as it held a special surprise he had been keeping secret.
As they ventured into the snowy forest, hand in hand, Emmett's grin was as wide as ever. "Isn't this amazing, (Y/N)?" he exclaimed, his enthusiasm bubbling over. "I knew you'd love it!"
(Y/N) smiled back at him, her eyes filled with affection. She had always been drawn to Emmett's zest for life and his ability to find joy in the simplest of moments. "It's beautiful, Emmett. I'm so grateful we can share this together."
Emmett led her deeper into the woods until they reached a secluded clearing. The trees were heavy with snow, and the world seemed hushed in a serene stillness.
"Close your eyes, (Y/N)," Emmett instructed with a mischievous glint in his eye. "I've got a surprise for you."
(Y/N) obliged, closing her eyes and feeling the cold, crisp air on her cheeks. She trusted Emmett implicitly and eagerly awaited the surprise he had in store.
Emmett took a step back and then, with a flourish, he clapped his hands together, creating a miniature snowstorm around them. Snowflakes swirled through the air, dancing in intricate patterns, and (Y/N) felt the magic of the moment wash over her.
As she opened her eyes and witnessed the enchanting display of snowfall, her heart skipped a beat. But something extraordinary happened. She felt a strange connection to the snowflakes, an inexplicable power coursing through her veins.
In her excitement and amazement, (Y/N) raised her hand, and to her astonishment, the snowflakes responded. They swirled and danced at her command, forming intricate shapes and designs. It was as if she had control over the very essence of winter itself.
Emmett watched in awe as (Y/N) unwittingly harnessed this incredible power. "Wow," he whispered, his voice filled with reverence.
Realization dawned on (Y/N) as she stared at her hands, her eyes wide with wonder. "I... I have ice abilities.”
Emmett could hardly contain his excitement. "That's amazing, (Y/N)! You're like a real-life snow queen!"
As they continued to explore her newfound powers together, (Y/N) and Emmett's bond grew stronger, their love warming even the coldest of winter days. Little did they know that her abilities would bring an extra layer of enchantment to their lives, and the snowy day in Forks would forever be etched in their memories as the day they discovered her unique gift.
Edward Cullen :
The small town of Forks lay beneath a thick blanket of snow, its streets and houses gleaming white in the winter sunlight. Edward Cullen, the introspective and empathetic member of the Cullen family, had been planning a surprise for (Y/N), his beloved mate. He had been monitoring the weather forecast closely, waiting for the perfect snowy day to reveal his plan.
As (Y/N) and Edward prepared to go out for a romantic drive, Edward couldn't help but smile at his mate's excitement. She had always loved the snow, and he knew that today's surprise would be especially meaningful to her.
As they stepped outside, (Y/N) marveled at the winter wonderland that surrounded them. "It's so beautiful," she sighed, her breath forming a frosty cloud in the cold air.
Edward chuckled softly, his golden eyes filled with adoration. "Just wait, (Y/N). I have something special planned for today."
He led her to his car, which was buried under a thick layer of snow and ice. (Y/N) watched as he handed her a snowbrush and began to clear the snow from the car.
But as (Y/N) reached out to help, something incredible happened. Her touch sent a wave of energy through the snow and ice, causing it to melt and evaporate before their eyes. The snowbrush in her hand was unnecessary; the ice and snow retreated at her mere presence.
Edward stopped in his tracks, his eyes widening in astonishment. "Did you just...?"
(Y/N) looked down at her hands, realizing that something extraordinary had just occurred. "I... I didn't mean to," she stammered. "It just happened."
Edward's smile returned, filled with awe and wonder. "You have ice abilities, (Y/N).”
Realization washed over her, and (Y/N) couldn't help but smile in return. "I suppose I do."
As the last of the ice and snow disappeared, (Y/N) and Edward stood before the now-clear car. The surprise he had planned had become even more magical, thanks to her newfound abilities.
Together, they embarked on their romantic drive, reveling in the beauty of the winter landscape. For (Y/N) and Edward, this snowy day marked the beginning of a new chapter in their love story, one filled with warmth and enchantment, even in the coldest of seasons.
Garrett, Edward and Emmett :
The anticipation hung heavy in the air as the Cullen family, including Garrett, Emmett, and Edward, stood on one side of a vast snowy field. On the opposing side were the Volturi, the ancient vampire royalty, led by Aro, Caius, and Marcus. Tensions had reached a breaking point, and a battle between the two factions seemed inevitable.
(Y/N), their beloved mate with ice abilities, stood at the forefront, her powers at the ready. The snowy field was the perfect canvas for her unique gift, and she was determined to protect her family and her mates at any cost.
The confrontation escalated, and as the Volturi advanced with menacing intent, (Y/N) raised her hands, her fingers poised like a conductor about to lead an orchestra. In an instant, the snow beneath her feet began to transform.
Spikes of ice erupted from the ground, forming a formidable barrier between the Cullens and the Volturi. Each spike glistened with deadly beauty, ready to defend against any threat.
Garrett, Emmett, and Edward watched in awe as their mate's power unfolded before their eyes. They had known of her abilities, but seeing her wield them with such precision and strength left them speechless.
Emmett grinned, his admiration shining through his usually jovial demeanor. "That's our mate," he exclaimed, pride and affection in his voice.
Edward, usually composed and analytical, was equally astounded. "She's incredible," he murmured, his eyes never leaving (Y/N).
Garrett, the adventurous nomad, couldn't help but be captivated by the sight. "I knew you were extraordinary, (Y/N), but this is beyond anything I could have imagined."
(Y/N) stood her ground, her icy spikes forming an impenetrable barrier. She was ready to defend her family and mates against any threat from the Volturi. Her love for them was unwavering, and she was prepared to use her unique abilities to protect the ones she cherished most.
As the standoff continued, the Volturi hesitated, their confidence wavering in the face of (Y/N)'s formidable display of power. The snowy battlefield had become a testament to the strength of their bond, a bond forged not only by love but by the extraordinary abilities that united them.
In that moment, (Y/N) knew that she had found not just love but a family that accepted her for who she was, powers and all. And her mates, Garrett, Emmett, and Edward, realized that they had found a mate whose strength and determination were matched only by her unwavering love for them. Together, they stood ready to face whatever challenges the future held, bound by a love that could weather even the fiercest of storms.

So I liveblogged TRON: Legacy on BlueSky over the last two nights...
So here is that liveblog! Enjoy!!
Rewatching one of my fave movies—TRON: Legacy. Love how the city settings at the bookends are just *transparently* Vancouver. Also enjoyed the deliberate echoes between ‘89 Flynn and Clu later in the film.
Also cannot BELIEVE they cast CILLIAN MURPHY as Ed Jr.!!!! And then just—utterly FAILED to use him for a direct sequel!!!!! UGH.
Love to see a Bruce Boxleitner in my TRON films, too!!!! Since he apparently isn’t going to be in No.3 this fall….. (am I salty about this? maybe just a LITTLE BIT.)
Alan has to have IMMEDIATELY clocked that that dog was Sam’s Marvin. Hence his immediate lookup of things on his tablet. Also his obvious amusement at the end of the scene.
Sam Flynn is a very generic white boy protagonist, but Garrett Hedlund plays him with this subtle undercurrent of grief that honestly elevates Sam as a character.
Favorite detail: Sam is on a first name basis with the impound lot attendant. LOVE THAT.
(Also yes I think I’m gonna liveblog the movie, bc why not)
Contrast in the next scene between Alan’s hope and Sam’s cynicism. Interesting, but also [look at] Sam’s face when Alan mentions the page from the arcade. He doesn’t WANT to be cynical, not completely.
Wouldn’t be a TRON film without a Journey song… Choice of “Separate Ways” seems very apt, especially the lyrics we hear. Like. Damn, what a good choice. Even kind of foreshadowing with the chorus! Amazing.
And then “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)”!! Just two VERY GOOD song choices. Anyway. Flynn’s subroom office. (With Lora’s laser, I might add. Add “utter lack of Cindy Morgan” to my list of petty grievances towards Disney.)
As neat as the laser animation is here—‘82’s was cooler.
I do seriously regret not going to see this film in IMAX when it came out. Maybe they’ll do a rerelease or something??
LOVE the subtle and unexplained worldbuilding of “this program has no disc; another stray.” This does get explained in the Uprising animated show, but just leaving it at that in the film leaves you asking questions.
While I do on the one hand like the moody sort of Blade Runner aesthetic of the Legacy Grid, I have to say I like the crazy colors of the Encom Grid way more.
I do feel like the only purpose of the Siren programs here is to Be Sexy, which, yes, I do put as a mark against this film. Like. Yay for more female characters!! Wish they actually had… character, tho.
The Actual Light Lines on the costumes are amazing btw. Love that. Just. There were so many cool things about this film (the music, for one) and I am still salty that all it got at the Oscars were sound noms.
This movie runs on Rule of Cool most of the time and I love it.
Someone on tumblr said Clu sits like a Skyrim jarl and….. like. They weren’t wrong.
I love how Awkward Sam is in the disc game, it’s honestly hilarious.
Also Jeff Bridges gave an interview recently [saying] that Clu basically looked like Bill Maher and….. he ain’t wrong.
Love the whole scene on the throne ship. Sam’s relief turning to suspicion turning to horror. Clu playing up his resemblance to Flynn, for the sake of bringing up Sam’s hopes only to drop them down and grind them in the dirt. It’s SO GOOD.
And like. At this point Sam doesn’t know that his dad’s alive. He’s angry and ready to fight and it’s great. (Also love that he assumes the lightcycle baton is a lightsaber. Lol.)
God. Remember when vfx in movies were actually GOOD. Because they did shit like previz and storyboards. Like. This lightcycle scene is dark, but it’s lit well enough that none of the details get lost. It’s great.
And now here comes my best girl!!!!! I love Quorra so much, she is very much my favorite character in this movie, I have written SO MUCH fanfic about her.
(I actually wrote a whole novel-length fic that diverges from the movie just before Quorra rescues Sam. Sam is injured and captured by Clu, and Quorra and Flynn have to rescue him. I really like that fic, I think I did a good job with it.)
I am such a sucker for family reunion scenes and this one with Flynn and Sam is no exception.
The food in Flynn['s] hideout is interesting. My headcanon is that it’s just repurposed energy (and also that it took Flynn a WHILE before he figured out how to do that).
Ahh the infamously awkward “biodigital jazz, man!” line.
Also I know they made Tron (my man Tron!!!!) shorter bc his body double was shorter (also Rinzler…) but it is hilarious that Tron just kind of…… shrunk. Lol.
Quorra’s so awkward as well and I love her for it. Just. Walking away in the middle of a conversation. Laughing at the wrong time. She’s great.
These dark scenes are so well lit. Like. Exceptionally so. Where did we go wrong the in last 15 years???
Aaaaand now, the best part of this movie, because Michael Sheen is here and ready to SLAY. also Daft Punk is here too and ready to drop a hot track or two.
Like, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges are putting in good drama performances, but Sheen is CLEARLY having the best time out of all of them. He’s great, and his Ziggy Stardust getup is great too.
Clu in Flynn’s hideout. The cold blue lighting here makes Clu look a little less real/human (this is even more evident later on the Rectifier, which I argue was a deliberate choice on the part of the filmmakers). It’s such a good scene tho, a lot of weighty stuff for Clu’s character.
I love that Quorra has a sword. Makes her even cooler in my eyes.
Also this fight sequence is so damn cool (tho a little heavy on the flashing lights). Esp. once Flynn shows up and the whole lighting changes and stuff. (Also Zuse’s Chaplin-esque dance at the end is hilarious.)
“You’re messing with my zen thing, man!” is an amazing line and actually works in a way biodigital jazz did not.
(Also I completely refuse to believe Flynn did not know Quorra was an Iso before messing with her code. It’s slightly implied here he didn’t, which just seems ridiculous to me.)
I like how Flynn understands that Clu’s imperfections and flaws are his own, rather than blaming everything all on his creation.
(One thing I enjoyed about writing that AU fic I mentioned above is that I got to keep certain characters—like Zuse—alive. I don’t have an idea for a sequel at this point, but those characters will be there if I do.)
Also I see the sort of gentle flirtation happening with Sam and Quorra and I like it. I don’t ship it, but it’s cute because Sam clearly drinks his Respect Women juice.
Okay. It’s getting late; I am going to resume this thread and this movie tomorrow. Sorry for clogging y’all’s feeds with my natter about TRON.
And we’re back!! Time for the last 35 minutes of TRON: Legacy!!!
Quorra’s sacrifice here is interesting. She’s hoping to distract Clu long enough to let Sam and Flynn escape through the Portal. Also Clu’s taunting her here is awful (and I mean that in the best way).
And now comes Clu’s speech, where the deaging vfx look their worst, but I think (as I mentioned last night) that is somewhat deliberate. Up to his most recent scenes, Clu was largely lit with warm colors, making his “resemblance” to Flynn a little easier to believe…
…but as his lighting transitions to cooler colors, the resemblance becomes more uncanny, and he looks much less human.
Love Sam’s earnestness in insisting he’s not going home without Flynn. He’s done with the cynicism that colored his scene with Alan; he’s ready to hope again.
Was that a Wilhelm scream as we see the tail end of Sam’s not-shown fight? Love it.
Rinzler surviving that kick off the lift because of course. That dude is ridiculous sometimes.
And now into the last action sequence—the aerial dogfight on the flight to the Portal. Again, despite how dark everything is, you can still tell what’s happening!! What a concept!!!!!!!
Also love how utterly uncanny the Sea of Simulation looks, with the voxel-y texture of the waves. I do rather desperately wish there was some Color to it, tho!!
And then—Flynn recognizes Tron, and Rinzler realizes who he is and— “I fight for the Users”—!!!!!!!!!!! That line makes me want to cheer every time I hear it. I do hate that Tron wasn’t properly in this movie that has his name on it, but it’s almost worth it for that moment when Rinzler remembers.
Arrival at the Portal—only Clu’s gotten there first. And I do love this conversation between Flynn and Clu, and Flynn’s trying to apologize, but Clu—by his nature, being a moment of Flynn’s whole being suspended in time—doesn’t understand, and doesn’t want to. And it’s tragic and I LOVE IT. UGHHH
One last uncanny look at Clu as he struggles for the Portal—and he truly looks inhuman here, thanks to the distortion of the Portal’s effects. And Flynn takes that last, most desperate option and then—reality fades in.
I do like that flashback as Flynn watches Sam and Quorra depart. Like. Beautiful.
So many things left hanging in these last scenes. What were Sam’s plans for the Grid, by saving it on that memory card? His plans for Encom? What would Quorra get up to in the User world? And unless Ares surprises me A Whole Fucking Lot, WE’LL NEVER KNOW. FUCK.
Again: transparently Vancouver here. Don’t care. Quorra drinking in the sunrise, paired with this gorgeous music, is a beautiful and fitting end.
And that’s a movie!!!! I love this movie so much; I have so many things to say about it, even fourteen years later. And god knows it’s helped me write a TON of fanfic, and is still giving me ideas to this day.
Anyway, thanks for indulging me in this thread of chatter. I’m gonna enjoy the fuck out of these end credits songs, because Daft Punk’s score—which I hardly MENTIONED!!! and which is EXCELLENT!!!—is gorgeous af and SHOULD HAVE netted them an Oscar nom. Ah well. Good night, y’all!!!!

honestly imo having a believer and a skeptic when doing ghosts hunts is so critical and why when I'm looking for extremely believable scenarios I'll watch watcher vs when I want ghost related laughs I'll watch Garrett. As much as I love him Garrett and Andrew feed each other's fears making their evidence far less convincing and believable because every sound or shuffle becomes evidence because they are terrified. still enjoyable don't get me wrong but I feel like the evidence is so much cooler and unsettling when you have some one who consistently brushes things off as wind or house noises goes "yeah idk man could be"

Section 31: The Movie (No Spoilers Review)
Long time followers will not be surprised to learn I didn't like it. Why might surprise you though. Normally my shtick is constructive criticism and analysis, and I'm going to try really hard to say on the rails, but I really didn't like this movie.
Look, I made a certain kind of peace with the notion that this would not be my kind of Star Trek story when it was announced. So I tried to be in the right mindset. In some ways I was pleasantly surprised in how it dialed back the nihilism and atrocity apologia quite a bit.
For once Section 31 is not attempting to solve the problem of an existential threat to the Federation through a half baked Xanatos gambit featuring rationalizations for genocide that don't really stand up to any serious scrutiny. So there's that. If we're grading on a curve, maybe assigning Star Trek what in education world we refer to as Individualized Education Plan, the absence of a poorly conceived moral justification for genocide is worth at least one star.
But anyway, I was mentally prepared for a story about people who are very much not Starfleet and I was prepared not to hold this against the film just because it wasn't my Star Trek.
Except it was boring. I wasn't invested in any of the characters or their stories. I suppose this also kinda, sorta functions as an origin story for Rachel Garrett and the iron nerve that would see someone choose to lay down their life for their principles not once, but twice even after being offered a reprieve from imminent death. But its all just so cliched and dull. It also doesn't really sell the idea that Garrett is someone with the capacity to go solemnly and knowingly to her certain death because its the right thing to do. Section 31's Garrett is a junior officer babysitting a gang of unstable criminals. She never really pays a price for choosing her Starfleet principles and the conclusion of her arc is that she's a bit cooler under pressure and less uptight for having stared down mortality.
It wildly gyrates from John Wick to Suicide Squad to Guardians of the Galaxy, and just never develop any fondness for any of the characters. The fight scenes are too long, the choreography doesn't do anything I find all that novel or impress me with the skill of the actors or their stunt doubles, and I don't feel whatever tension or uncertainty I assume I'm supposed to feel. The final bought of fisticuffs does up the ante in terms of how much violence a Trek fight will show but that kind of made it worse in that the extra bit of ick doesn't actually compensate for the lack of suspense.
Ultimately, its a film that unsurprisingly leaned into many of my complaints about Discovery. Which I think is actually an underrated show that is hated for the wrong reasons. But it often suffers from bizarre and self contradicting story logic, a shallow sense of the core principles its trying to espouse, and rather boring and drawn out fight scenes that just seem to eat up time. Fisticuffs are not new to Trek, but for the most part other shows just get it over with because with their less elaborate sets and FX, there's only so much they could do to make the fights visually interesting if the fights weren't narratively interesting.
I assume the people who are constantly complaining about political correctness or wokeism will find something to complain about, but it really doesn't have any of the shallow idealism of Discovery and I actually find I miss it. Discovery's first season in particular had a lot to say about struggling to remain decent in indecent circumstances, but Section 31 only sort of has anything to say.
Where it does have anything to say, I suppose maybe if you squint there's a subtle retcon where Terran evil is no longer genetically predetermined as alluded to in S3 of Discovery, but rather a product of a monstrous society that makes people into monsters in order to survive. Codas like "there are no righteous tyrants" (and I'm paraphrasing because I don't feel like going back to pull the exact quote) feel significant but its frankly pretty vestigial as moral messaging goes because the Terran Empire is so cartoonishly evil and nonsensical in how its institutions operate.
And anyway, I don't know who that message is for? The handful of internet edgelords who fully acknowledge they want a Caesar to "cross the Rubicon" who probably aren't going to watch this movie anyway because Trek, especially modern Trek doesn't glorify and center their Hobbessian worldview? It just feels like the sort of empty, placeholder philosophy that anyone can get behind and anyone can feel like it represents them and their virtues and assume its an explicit condemnation of whatever real world figure they hate. Which just feels so cowardly and dull.
When it comes to storytelling about trying to be a good person amidst terror and horror, Section 31 like Discovery and Picard, is just Diet Expanse. Or maybe in this case, its the Guardians of the Galaxy without any mirth.
Star Trek Into Darkness is no longer my least favorite Star Trek movie.

for the worldstate asks, 17 for your amell and hawke? :)c
Thank you so much for this question! 🥰
Solona: the friendly, smart, somewhat troublesome kid, and also the one you couldn’t be mad for too long at. However, the kind of trouble she’d give you wouldn’t be more than a few stolen apples from the kitchen, skipped classes, and her night-time, way-past-curfew Circle Tower explorations. She was rather difficult to keep in one place, Solona always was so curious, and so talkative — she could also just come up to a random person and ask them how they were doing, where they were going, etc. Social anxiety didn’t quite catch her up with her.
Solona would climb the bookshelves, sneak into the senior students’ halls to watch them study and cast way more complex, way more cooler spells. That was the shit. She would always bring Jowan to watch, and they would quietly wow somewhere in the corner behind a curtain. But the two always got caught and brought back to their respective “classrooms”.
Actually, the most outrageous thing she’s ever done in the Circle was sneak out of the Tower and go swim in the Lake Calenhad in the middle of the night. But that was when she was 17, I think.
Another thing Solona would do is help the newcomers adapt to the new life in the Circle. She always liked new things, new people, and she would want them to feel welcome, to make it fun for them in the Tower. She’d think “look how many friends we’ve got here.”
She would sometimes wonder what sort of life is there beyond the Tower, but this type of thought never truly lingered. She had enough to be interested in within the Tower, and it was her literal world for the majority of her life. Solona is very attached to the Circle and will always consider it her family and alma mater.
Hawke: I imagine he was quite communicative and talkative as well, but in a different manner. He’s ultimately the little guy who’d say “you’re my friend now” and take you away somewhere. And it’s not like you had much choice, you’re stuck with him now. And his friend circle was Big, literally every kid in Lothering knew Garrett, he was almost nauseatingly popular, since he was so brave and smart, and everything. Or he thought he was. He wanted to be great, to do great things. He was independent, stubborn, and so goddamn loud. His voice remains that way still.
Garrett liked feeding strays and helping his mom with the twins. He liked their little noses. He loved it when his father would cook and how he would light up the fire with a click of his fingers. He taught Garrett how to do that.
He would watch his parents be so in love with each other, and swear to himself he must love the same way once. He bring Carver and Bethany to sit in the Lothering Chantry to not feel so sad from the rain outside.
He would grow moody and shut down when ignored. He would sell himself short. He would not ask for anything but a smile in return. He still likes it a lot when people smile to him.
Eventually, as he grew, he became more grounded and serious. He would wonder, like all young people do, what to do with his life, what’s his purpose? Those questions never had an answer. Until the darkspawn came, of course.

@headstrongblake said: i think i owe you a pretty substantial apology. / grant & nick
finally, after what felt like a whole life time, it was done. garrett was dead and his organization was left in ashes. finally, he could return to the only place he had ever felt was his home, return to the people who at one point had cared about him, had rallied for him even when he didn't deserve it. he had never deserved any of it, their love, their loyalty, their dedication. now if you're leaving, get the fuck out and never come back. kassy's words still rung in his mind. had been all he could think about every second he drove back to town. she was probably right, that he should never show his face her again after the pain he caused and for a while there he didn't think he ever would. but then he would remember what octavia said to him... and nick, how desperate his brother was to bring him home.
his hands flexed at his sides before he tucked them into his jean pockets after he parked along the road near the beach. he noticed the familiar vehicles of his friends and slowly headed down towards the water where all the commotion was happening. his honey eyes first search out octavia, spotting her with kassy and most of the group, how she clung to the blonde, trinity if he recalled, how she nuzzled against her. jealousy and heartbreak pierced through him as they kissed but he nearly laughed bitterly to himself. he had no right to feel any sort of way about it, in fact there was a small part of him that was happy for octavia, that she had managed to finally move on.
what he also noticed was that nick was nowhere to be found, at least not with the group. a brow rose as he came down the stone steps towards the beach only to spot nick by the cooler of booze, sipping his drink with a longing look in his eyes. there was a story there and he had a feeling that grant himself was somewhat to blame for it. he had finally been able to breathe a breath of relief when nick and rev had given up but if he was to guess, kassy wasn't too happy nick had left to begin with. his feet crunched in the sand before he came up to stand beside nick, his own longing in his eyes as he too watched the group interact.
"why aren't you with them?" he asked nick who seemed speechless in this moment as he did a double take beside him. grant turned towards nick with a sad, soft smile, raising his hand to touch his shoulder as he gave it a gentle squeeze. "hey brother, it's good to see you..." he said genuinely, any anger he had still held for nick having melted away the moment he saw the man there standing by himself. hell, even before that. grant's anger had always just been his attempt to protect nick, his frustration that if he just went home grant could finally do what he'd left to do. he pulled nick in for a tight hug that lingered a moment, patting his back gently before he released him and stepped back.
grant. the emotion in nicks voice had grant's smile grow, honey eyes shining as he tried to keep from wincing. he had created so much pain here, had hurt nick, had hurt octavia and everyone else. it was why he shook his head as nick then spoke. i think i owe you a pretty substantial apology.. "no brother, i owe you one. i'm sorry... for everything." he thanked nick then briefly as he was handed a drink, "i'm sorry for leaving without telling you, and for what i said... and how i reacted when you found me." he shook his head, gaze avoiding nick for a moment as he glanced back towards the group.
sucking in a pained breath he then brought his attention back to nick, wanting him to see the sincere regret in his eyes. "he's dead," he then said lowly, "i had to go with him, nick... i had to go otherwise he wouldn't've stopped until..." he trailed off, taking a long sip of his beer as he steeled himself. "and i couldn't've just killed him, they would have sent more in his place, it would have sent off a chain reaction--" clearing his throat he looked down at nicks hands, face paling the slightest as that anger smouldered in his eyes. "i made him suffer for what he did to you," he said quietly. "i'm so sorry nick."

2028 - Summer/Autumn - Two Years Ago
There was a proverb about how the only thing that stays the same is change. Kyle could believe that. The last couple of years had been a string of one change after another, and it didn't look like things were going to settle down any time in the near future, either.
Two summers ago, for example, the house had been full of teenagers.
Only two of them lived there, Kyle and Willow's foster kids, twins Georgia and Garrett. Teenagers tend to move in flocks, however, so usually their friends would be around all day too.
Georgia spent most of her time with Melissa and Hope, and Hope was also Garrett's girlfriend.
... which sometimes left Melissa on the outside a little, although she seemed to enjoy Willow's company too.
They had all just finished their final year of high school and were excited for college and what lay ahead. The four would be living in the same dorm at Richmond City Tech. Kyle and Willow hoped that this would mean reasonably frequent visits, as the college was less than an hour away.
That autumn, with the kids moved out and the house empty, Kyle and Willow had their first real vacation in some years. Kyle had just marked a 'milestone' birthday and they wanted to do something special to celebrate.
They went up to the cabin in the mountains in Three Lakes. The cabin had previously belonged to Kyle's parents, but now their large extended family shared use of it.
Over the years they had developed some rules and routines around cleaning and maintenance, and little ways to make things more relaxed, like each person leaving some non-perishable food in the kitchen so the next person didn't have to shop immediately after the long drive.
There were also down sides to sharing the property, though. The cabin still had only an outside toilet. They planned to build on a proper bathroom, but no one had really taken responsibility for coordinating the project. Kyle and Willow hoped that, now that things would be a bit quieter at home, maybe they could start working on that.
Bathrooms aside, the place was comfortable and cozy, and just right for a quiet week away in the cooler weather.
--- From Kyle Part 1
My TS3 recreation of Three Lakes is the beautiful Salmon Woods, with some additions by me to give it a TS2 Three Lakes vibe. It's so pretty, this is why I want to move some of my playable sims out here and play it more often.
