So after a few months without a neighbor, one just moved into the tiny home next door. I'm sad to report that it's not a hunky nerdy gay gardener as I would have hoped but instead a blonde woman that looks like Laura Dern (in full khaki shorts and all like she was reprising her role as Ellie from Jurassic Park).
I'm sure somewhere in the world there's a lesbian with the opposite problem wishing we could switch ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพ

Sheep and Alpaca wool, fleeces, pelts ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿฆ™
Good evening happy healthy life seekers ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿก
This evenings TOFF chatter is all about our fluffy, hairy, amazing, happy, healthy life friends ~ sheep and alpacas in particular their fleeces/pelts๐Ÿฆ™๐Ÿ‘
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many sheep farmers struggle in the UK in disposing of their sheep fleeces due to the huge decline in the UK wool manufacturing industry. Only one organisation in the UK will actually take in raw, unwashed pelts ~ sheep fleeces and the cost of transportation and shearing means the farmer barely breaks even if indeed scrapes a few coppers profit.....it's becoming unviable ๐Ÿ™„
Here at TOFF, we've even heard of farmers trying to burn the pelts and wool ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฒ but to no avail as they do not burn well so many result to burying.......farmers often bury things when other options are against them ๐Ÿค”
However.....there's always a better happier and healthier work around solution ๐ŸŽ‰ to all life's organic farming woes ๐Ÿค—
Here we go with various options for using the unwanted fleeces, wool and pelts......
Weed membrane ๐ŸŒฑ
The fleeces of both sheep and alpacas make amazebugs incredible weed membrane ๐Ÿค— The alpaca wool is a little soft and due to the manor of trimming our furry friends is often in chunks of hair so there is a tendency for them to blow away however a fine mesh top placed over the wool and pinned down prevents this issue ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŒฑ
The sheep pelts and fleeces are super at the job as they are often heavy, laden in lovely wool and due to the shearing of the sheep are often in one full pelt so they lay down to the ground super well.
Tumblr media
Here at TOFF we take in sheep and alpaca wool twice a year following their shears and trims and they have proven themselves to be super at surprising all weeds! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค—
To plant, with the wool in place is also super easy, no cutting of plastic simply pull the wool apart and you're good to grow ๐Ÿชด
As the fleeces are naturally biodegradable, they break down naturally and nicely adding fertility to the soil along the way ๐ŸŒฑ
Many other positives and plus points too ~ they conserve rain for your plants, locking in the moisture, the lanolin content ~ natural oils within the fleece repel slugs and pests so perfect for your vegetable and cut flower gardens ~ we use them around our blackberry and herb plants ๐ŸŒฑ
And the list truly does go on......they're super for overwintering your plants outside ~ you're effectively wrapping them up in a pure natural fleece so the plant roots are protected over winter โ„๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค—
As we are strictly organic we have a supplier who doesn't spray the sheep and alpacas with any toxic nasties so all healthy raw wool
It's a win win win ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค—
External matting to create traction / anti slip
If you have an external area which always becomes boggy or slippery....fleece to the rescue.
For such a problem patch we strongly advocate the raw sheep's wool as the fibres are stronger and matted.....the alpaca is a little finer and silkier.
The heavy raw sheep's wool with it's strong fibres matted together ensures a non slip surface, perfect for grassy verges and muddy pathways....it also works incredibly well under your car tyres in winter as it creates traction ~ tried and tested in TOFF motos ๐Ÿš— ๐Ÿค—
Insulation ๐Ÿก
For many years sheep's wool has been used to insulate, in cavity walls on natural, healthy builds and in loft spaces. It's DB (decibel) rating is great, it's low burn and highly insulative from the cold โ„๏ธ๐Ÿฅถ
However....caution! You probably shouldn't start loading up your roof space with raw sheep's wool just yet as you may find yourself with a moth and pest infestation as along with us humans they love it too ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฆ™
The raw wool needs treatment first, along with washing etc it's also passed through strong UV in order to destroy any pests prior to being compressed for insulation. Two companies in Ireland undertake such vigorous procedures ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿก
We have heard wool insulation chatter regarding using it raw in external spaces....animal housing and sheds without the use of UV ๐Ÿค—
Compost ๐ŸŒฑ
Here at TOFF HQ we are early days in our own experiment with raw wool ๐Ÿฆ™๐Ÿ‘
In our compost bay....so far so good with learnings along the way! We've used a lawn clipping, raw wool, horse manure, used coffee grinds and used tea bag mix ~ all organic of course . We do not use food waste - green elements due to the local Roland (ratty) ๐Ÿ€
Our learnings.....go easy on the amount of wool added...it takes quite a while to break down (hence why it's so fabulous as a weed barrier!) we were a little heavy handed when layering the wool element so sifting out is one of our summer jobs โ˜€๏ธ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Garden twine ๐Ÿชข
Instead of conventional twine, the raw wool...we'd advocate sheep wool....can be spun, even as simply in your fingers๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿผ to create fantastic garden twine, super natural adding to our happy healthy life in the garden ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿค—
Happy evening to you all ~ happy healthy life seekers ๐Ÿค—
Love TOFF x

Hereโ€™s a step-by-step guide to help you use Terreplenish effectively:
Materials Needed:
Terreplenish regenerative soil microbes (24 ounces)
Water (5 gallons)
Large container or bucket (at least 5-gallon capacity)
Watering can or spray applicator
Steps:
Prepare the Solution:
Pour 24 ounces of Terreplenish regenerative soil microbes into a large container or bucket.
Add 5 gallons of water to the container, mixing thoroughly to ensure the microbes are well-diluted and evenly distributed in the water.
Application:
Fill a watering can or spray applicator with the diluted solution.
Apply the solution evenly over the soil in your garden. Ensure thorough coverage by watering all areas, focusing particularly on the base of the plants where the roots are located.
Frequency of Application:
For optimal results, apply the Terreplenish solution once a month during the growing season.
In the early stages of plant growth or if the soil is heavily depleted, you may apply every two weeks.
Tips for Success:
Timing: Apply the solution in the early morning or late afternoon to prevent evaporation and ensure the microbes have the best conditions to penetrate the soil.
Consistent Watering: Maintain consistent moisture levels in the soil to support the microbial activity and overall plant health.
Organic Matter: Enhance the effectiveness of the microbes by incorporating organic matter, such as compost or mulch, into your soil. This provides additional nutrients and improves soil structure.
Benefits of Using Terreplenish:
Improved Soil Health: Regenerative soil microbes enhance soil structure, nutrient availability, and water retention.
Increased Plant Growth: Healthier soil promotes robust root systems and vigorous plant growth.
Sustainable Gardening: Using natural soil microbes reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and supports sustainable gardening practices.

Todayโ€™s garden harvest!
I donโ€™t have as many tomatoes growing as Iโ€™d like, we had a gross heatwave and it killed a bunch of the blooms. But I sense at least a couple tomato sandwiches in my future! ๐Ÿฅช ๐Ÿ…
And letโ€™s not talk about the cucumbers, theyโ€™ve claimed the zucchini curse as their own and have run with it. (Aka the easiest thing to grow but some how mine would rather die than accept the love and water and fertilizer I give them, but itโ€™s fine Iโ€™m fine)

the gardening skill is the very first of 3 skills that Daisy has to max out for the challenge. this was the easiest out of the rest to finish so i am not surprised that it was the first to be maxed out.

meanwhile, everyone is aging up. both Forrest and Fern are kids, Butter is now an adult, and Greyson is now a full adult. Forrest aged up with the dog lover trait and has the social butterfly aspiration. Fern aged up with the geek trait and has the rambunctious scamp aspiration.

My next door neighbor
CHAPTER 1:
Few weeks ago she talked to me about wanting to learn and get together about gardening. So we did. I gave her over 12 gardening books for her to keep and expand her knowledge. So farโ€ฆ
1. She bought few fruit trees that mine can help pollinate.
2. We both bought a different pecan tree that will pollinate each other.
3. She cut down 2 trees, I took them for my raised beds and gave her 4x4s for her to enclose her vegetable patch.
4. Iโ€™m planting more blackberries and grapes near the fence line so she can harvest. She gave me elderberry starts.
5. She gave me cardboard, I gave her bird netting.
With everything going on in the world sheโ€™s worried about how costly food is getting.
Letโ€™s see how this goesโ€ฆ chapter 2 coming soon

Sustainable Reed Beds ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€
Let's talk waste..........
Our happy, healthy life seekers ๐Ÿค— blog today is focused on an amazing biodiverse system......reed beds ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€
Reed Beds have been used for centuries internationally and are once again becoming ever popular in our quest for a sustainable independent living life free of the global elite shackles, whoop whoop ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŽ‰
Essentially a reed bed filters waste from the home and garden allowing for an outflow of water pure enough to flow back onto your land. ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŒพ
Horizontal Reed Bed Tertiary Treatment System ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง
A system comprises of horizontal modules constructed from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) which is filled with granular material along with planted reeds. This system provides the hydraulic flow path and environment to achieve improved effluent quality.
A 6 person unit comprises of two GRP units and a 12 person unit comprises of four GRP modules.
Each prefabricated GRP module measures 2.5m x 0.8m x 0.8m depth. The modules are connected in a series with pipes to maximise the flow path in order to achieve optimal performance in the effluent filtered outflow.
Installation is fairly simple, each module simply needs installing level with the ground with a suitable backfill and filled internally with washed media such as granular granite, shingle or broken stone. Granite is the preferred option due to its incredible natural filtration abilities. Such media needs to be 16-32mm in individual size.
Each module requires a 100mm fall between one another and, if used in conjunction with a cesspit, ideally installed 2m in distance away from the cesspit.
Little maintenance is required within the first 2-3 years. The reeds will die back in the winter months but come spring will produce new healthy growth. Every 2-3 years the reeds may require thinning out and every 4-5 years some of the gravel media may need removing and replacing due to silt.
Effluent from the home or garden enters at the start of the first module and exits out of the last module via interconnected pipes.
The reed bed will remain full of water at all times and there will be a sub surface flow below the surface of the gravel media of apx 25-50mm.
The reed beds are low in oxygen levels and will reduce nitrates within the effluent converting the nitrogenous compounds into free nitrogen gas which escapes into the atmosphere.
If the reed bed receives strong effluents with high levels of suspended solids it will block up rapidly and the granular media will require replacement.
Such systems may smell and are best designed and used for effluents with an organic loading which, at best, is 60mg/l for BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand). In essence this requires household products used and waste flowing into sewerage to be of an organic nature, this includes, toilet papers, cleaning products, bathing products and those foodstuffs consumed by the household occupants. Keep it organic, clean and non toxic, if such principles are followed, the system life expectancy is up to 15 years ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ€
Tumblr media
Vertical Reed Bed Tertiary Treatment System ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง
A vertical reed bed system is aerobic, the effluent is dosed periodically and uniformly over the surface of the bed via a network of pipes. Effluent percolates vertically down through the media ultimately being collected within drainage pipes at the bottom of the bed which discharge to the next reed bed in a series or alternatively discharging into a watercourse or pond.
Slightly different in operation as the bed remains dry until the next dose is applied and there is no smell due to the aerobic nature, thereby eliminating smell as opposed to producing it and the life expectancy of such a system is indefinitely. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ€
Forced reed bed aeration ๐Ÿ’ง
Forced aeration may be used with either horizontal or vertical systems.
The reed bed is fitted with a series of air pipes along the bottom of the bed and air is bubbled up through the media.
In the vertical flow system the media is fully submerged and saturated with oxygen.
Such aeration greatly improves the treatment capability of both types of reed bed ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’ง
Cesspit / composting toilet options ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿšพ๐Ÿ’ง
Reed Beds can be used in conjunction with a cesspit waste system. The cesspit would be responsible for the collection of toilet waste whilst the reeds beds would deal with the waste from sinks, baths and showers. Throughout the world there's differing thoughts on systems, in the UK toilet waste is prohibited from entering the reed bed even though international studies, particularly in India, have clearly shown the bed is quite capable of filtering such waste.
An alternative to combining reed bed filtration with a cesspit would be to install composting toilets, whereby nothing enters the sewerage system or an incineration toilet, this would negate any requirement for a cesspit.......more to come on such toilets in future blogs ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿšพ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿšพ
What is absolutely certain, great care must be taken when installing such systems, severe harm to health, both human and nature, can occur if systems are not designed, installed and maintained correctly. Ongoing reviewing and testing of effluent outflow is essential to ensure no harm comes to you or your beautiful surroundings flora ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ and fauna ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฆ
We greatly advise on seeking expertise for your installation ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€
As always happy, healthy, life seekers ๐Ÿค— if you have any questions or require further detailed guidance and expertise we would love to chat via our email: [email protected]
Much love,
TOFF ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒฟx
