This is another species of insect that spends the Winter as an adult, and is thus able to appear early in the year, sometimes even when snow is still present. Common European Greenbottle Fly (Lucilia sericata) in my backyard, June 2018. These beautiful shiny metallic green flies are common around any sort of decaying material of animals or plants. Their larvae are not limited to already dead material however, and will feed inside of wounds where the parents have deposited their eggs. This species is one of the major species whose maggots are used in medicine to clean wounds of decaying or dead material.
