Saturday to and fro
To the post office in the morning for another bit of work and then back and before I had the time to sit my ass down my neighbor rang the doorbell to ask for help in connecting her speaker to her phone because she wanted to play bhajans for Ganesh Chaturthi. Yay :(
Noise then. And out again after a bit because the dude at the post office fucked up in labeling a speed post. So, go there, redo the whole process before the post office closes for lunch. And then lunch at a south Indian restaurant because why not.
Back at home and some help and inputs are needed about gardening. A quick dash to the hardware store to bring some pipes to create a rudimentary frame for the vines and climbers.
Sit down and it's time for dinner. Which was fish. I hated it. I still ate. Food is food.
Have dinner and neighbor asking to move my car an inch because someone parked another car wrong and went off because of which neighbor can't enter her parking. Did the whole jiggle and wiggle with the cars like some kind of jigsaw video game.
Sit down and more help is needed from me for filling up and checking some documents.
Try to sit down again and then I get to the Tumblr app.
Hello. Saturday is almost done.

Namah Shivaya means "O salutations to the auspicious one!", or “adoration to Lord Shiva", or "universal consciousness is one". It is called Siva Panchakshara, or Shiva Panchakshara or simply Panchakshara meaning the "five-syllable" mantra (viz., excluding the OM) and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This Mantra appears as 'Na' 'Ma' 'Śi' 'Vā' and 'Ya' in the Shri Ruthram hymn which is a part of the Krishna Yajurvedha and also in the Rudrashtadhyayi which is a part of the Shukla Yajurvedha. This mantra is associated with qualities of prayer, divine-love, grace, truth, and blissfulness. When done correctly, it calms the mind and brings spiritual insight and knowledge. It also keeps the devotee close to Shiva and within His protective global fellowship. Traditionally, it is accepted to be a powerful healing mantra beneficial for all physical and mental ailments. Soulful recitation of this mantra brings peace to the heart and joy to the Atman or soul. Many Hindu teachers consider that the recitation of these syllables is sound therapy for the body and nectar for the Ātman. The nature of the mantra is the calling upon the higher self; it is the calling upon Shiva. Ganesh Chaturthi 2022 | History & Significance Ways to Celebrate
Ganesh Chaturthi / Ganesh Puja is a national festival celebrated both publicly and privately, mainly by installing a clay idol of Ganesha. This festival celebrates Lord Vinayaka or Ganesha as the god of new beginnings and the remover of obstacles. Lord Ganesha is revered for his wealth and knowledge.
Tumblr media
Ganesh Chaturthi History
Ganesha is known by the names Helamba, Ekadanta, Ganapati, Vinayaka and Piraiyar. Ganesh Chaturthi/Ganesh Puja is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals in the country. Lord Ganesha's blessings are invoked in religious ceremonies. Lord Vinayaka is known as a diviner who helps to avoid natural disasters. He is also the patron saint of travel. Lord Vinayaka is depicted as having an elephant's head on a human body. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
How is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?
In some parts of India such as Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the festival of Ganesha is celebrated for 10 days. It's a public event. We have suites. On the days of the festival, Vinayaka clay idols are placed in decorated tents inside houses and outdoors for the public to see and respect. Ganesha clay idols are also installed in schools and colleges.
Is Vinayaka Chaturthi a public holiday?
Ganesh Chaturthi is not a public holiday throughout India. It is a regional holiday celebrated only in certain states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. These states also do not require employers to declare Ganesha as a holiday.
Which States Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi/Chavithi is celebrated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Karnataka. Other states celebrating this festival are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Delhi and Punjab.
What rituals are performed during Vinayaka Chaturthi?
The festival is the same across India and has similar connotations, but there are slight differences in rituals and traditions in each region. The celebration lasts 7-10 days in various locations.
Placement of the Ganapati Statue
The statue of the Elephant God is placed on a pedestal in the house or public place where Puranpratishtha Puja is performed. Don't look at the moon: On the first night of the festival, people avoid looking at the moon.
Prayer
Washing the statue. Puja with Shloka chanting and offerings of flowers and sweets. and aarti, d. H. The idol is circumscribed with a plate filled with burning earth/metal lamps, kumkum, and flowers. Daily evening and morning prayer meetings are also held at temples and public facilities in Ganapati.
Special Performances
Dance, music and skit performances may also take place in some public facilities of Lord Ganesha.
How to prepare and eat Modak
Modak is considered Ganapati's favourite candy. These dumplings are made and distributed as prasad during the festival. Other food items such as Laddoo, Barfi, Pedha and Sundal are also distributed during this period.
Visarjan
This is done on the last day of the festival (between the 7th day and his 11th day) by immersing the idol in water. It is accompanied by a procession of people singing with bhajans, shlokas and idols. People ask forgiveness for their mistakes and ask God to help them stay on the right path. Ganesha gives thanks for visiting homes/places, removes obstacles from people's paths and is auspicious.
Farewell March
Farewell March or Ganesh Her Bisarjan is a great highlight of this festival. This is a celebration in which the installed idols of the gods are immersed in a body of water. Immersion can be done in the nearest pond, lake, river or sea. Those who do not have access to large bodies of water can also bathe symbolically by soaking their idols in small vessels or barrels at home.
The idols are carried in huge processions, accompanied by devotees singing bhajans and songs, from their place of installation – either at home or in public pandals – to the body of water. Depending on the size of the idol, it may be carried on the shoulders of the family head, a symbolic family head of the region, or mounted on a wooden cart or vehicle.
All these works are accompanied by the chanting of Ganapathi Bhapa Morya, bhajans, dancing, prasad and flower distribution.
Why is the Ganesha statue submerged in water on the last day of the festival?
Ganesh Visarjan symbolizes the end of the festival and the fact that everything on earth will finally merge with one or more natural elements. It also shows Lord Vinayak's birth cycle he is born from clay and in this form, he returns to the elements.

The many colours of Mandawa, a Sekhawati heritage - travel
Tumblr media
Just 170 km from Jaipur and about 260 km from Delhi lies an erstwhile little town full of colours and devoid of noise. Mandawa, a village in the Sekhawati region of Rajasthan, is bordered by the Aravalis in the east and the desert sands in the west. Situated in the district of Jhunjhunu, Mandawa is also known as the town of havelis, some of which also double as hotels. Almost every house in the tiny town seems to pop out of a period drama. If one is careful of the little lanes fanning off the main street, it is a cakewalk to cover the entire town on foot in half a day. A flourishing history Once upon a time, Mandawa was a flourishing merchant town in Rajasthan. These merchants, with their silk, opium and hashish businesses thriving in the old port cities of Calcutta and Bombay, had established successful trade connections with China, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. A town with almost every family into such high-profit business dealings, Mandawa grew up as a resident town of wealthy merchants living in big, beautiful havelis. Spiritual or spooky? With little or no big vehicles, the streets of Mandawa are populated with occasional cows and oxen, and rural men and women mostly busy doing handiwork. The Mandawa sky is unbelievably blue. While the mornings here are colourful, chirpy, and fresh post 6 pm, Mandawa becomes a deserted town. Shops are shut, windows closed, and there’s not a soul to be seen on the streets. They say, Mandawa is very spiritual. The temples nearby seem like the only source of entertainment, where I chanced upon some young kids singing bhajans on a mic, out of tune, dancing and swaying with their hands up in the air. These are school goers and college kids, clearly. Their version of karaoke, I thought. I wake up hearing azaans followed by a Ganesh vandana. And yet, they do not conflict each other. But there’s something eerie about this town. An unmistakably spectral air veils this town in the dark. A stroll around 7 pm got me face to face with an owl, screeching on a branch glazing upon this intruder. Harlalka Haveli and Harlalka Well
Tumblr media
A 300-year-old residence turned into a heritage hotel, this Sarovar property is named The Messenger - Harlalka Haveli. Previously owned by the Harlalka family, this pastel green haveli is one of the most well kept ones in Mandawa, which has been further restored by Sarovar. Peaceful, sunny, and beautifully adorned with Sekhawati paintings as frescoes, Harlalka Haveli harks of a luxurious past while tucks you in a comfortable couple of days. The guests get their personal butler with every package, outstanding food, artistic views, and extremely warm staff, very signature Sarovar style. The Harlalka Baoli, opposite the Harlalka Haveli was a community bath with a 200 ft deep well. I tried peeping down the thing, which is weirdly, just recently been sealed with iron clasps, and honestly my vertigo pranced up in action. This Baoli, developed by the Harlalka family for the villagers and not for personal use, had separate bath spaces for men and women, the remnants of which can be seen even now. Murmuria Haveli
Tumblr media
The Murmuria Haveli was established back in 1930s and is one of the most gorgeous buildings in Mandawa. The ornately decorated residence with the traditional Sekhawati designs on its southern wall features an interesting story. One can notice a long frieze depicting a train and a railway crossing. There is also a painting of Nehru on horseback holding the Indian flag. Quite surprisingly, on the southern side of the building, one can see paintings of gondolas on the Venetian canals. The ticket for Murmuria Haveli also includes entry to some of the Goenka Havelis. Goenka Havelis
Tumblr media
The Goenkas were a wealthy family in Mandawa with several beautiful havelis to their name. The Seth Dayaram Dedraj Goenka Haveli and the Goenka Double Haveli are some of the buildings worth mentioning. The image of Indra on an elephant smoking opium on the entrance wall of the Seth Dayaram Haveli is quite a famous landmark. The Double Haveli, with its two wings -- Vishwanath Goenka Haveli and the northern Tarkeshwar Goenka Haveli, has some of the most gorgeous pictures of animals on the façade. These frescoes have been restored, but there needs to be a passionate undertaking by the government to bring these gems to their glorious states. Castle Mandawa The main fort of Mandawa, with its medieval origins, dominates the town with a painted arched gateway spectacularly adorned with paintings of Krishna and his cows. This is the very castle around which the merchant and peasant civilization was set up that eventually formed the town. A great place to discover the legacy of Shekhawati, the original fortress of Mandawa has now been converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. Family portraits, antique cannons and arms add to the charm of this family-run resort where tradition still runs strong. A huge brass gong struck by the resident timekeepers at the fort every hour gives the guests a surreal feeling of being probably lost in some ancient era. These erstwhile wealthy houses cannot be compared to palaces, which are abounding in other cities of Rajasthan. Most of the havelis that have not been converted into hotels need our attention now. Crumbling walls, broken antiques, and splendid hand-printed designs are what is left of them. Their present owners thrive on selling tickets and souvenirs, and occasionally renting the havelis off to Bollywood shoots. You must have seen some of these locations in Paheli, Jab We Met, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, or PK. Mandawa can be easily accessible by train from Delhi and Jaipur. Get down at Jhunjhunu and take an auto rickshaw or the hotel pick-up shuttle to reach the town of Mandawa, which is about half an hour away. Things to Know About the Shirdi Kubera Sai Baba Temple in Mahabalipuram
The Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is located at Injambakkam between Chennai and Mahabalipuram. It is situated on the left side of the Crocodile Bank. The temple’s main entrance is not far from the East Coast Road (ECR), and the other end is facing the Bay of Bengal. This serene and placid temple is maintained by the Shirdi Sai Trust (SST), a charitable trust engaged in the propagation of the noble thoughts and deeds of Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi. The temple was constructed in 1933 by Guruji C.B. Sathpathy.
Tumblr media
You can also come across the Raja Ganapathy (Ganesh) Temple before reaching the Saibaba temple which is beautifully carved on white marble with Saibaba in sitting posture. You can go near the Peedam to pray and join the meditation for as long as you want in the meditation hall. The temple complex also houses shrines devoted to Lord Shiva and her consort Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Rama, Lord Muruga, and his consorts Devyani and Valli, Lord Durga, Lord Krishna, Maha Vishnu, and other deities.
Some of the daily activities at the temple include performing Bhajan, Vocal Music, Kirtan, etc; a holy bath of Sri Saibaba; Morning Arthi or Kakad Arthi; Noon Aarti or Madhyanha Aarti; Evening Aarti or Dhuparti; Night Aarti or Shejarti and Abhishekam. The temple is open for public from 7 AM to 1.30 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM every day.
The Dhuni Puja is a must-attend. Baba’s Dhuni is kept burning at all times, like the Shirdi Temple. You can perform chanting of Baba’s dhun and have darshan of Sri Sai Baba too. There is a walking path about the Dhuni arranged with acupressure stones. Once inside the temple, you cannot perform any poojas.
You’ll be able to find a marble statue of Sri Sai Baba that is 5.5ft tall installed in the main temple sanctum, whilst all the pratima are made out of black stone. Devotees can touch the statue and get a satisfied Darshan at the temple sanctum. A 3ft statue of the Baba is installed in the Dwarakamai alongside the main sanctum temple.  The temple which is hexagonal in structure measuring 100 feet high is provided with concrete ladders to climb up to the top.
The temple encloses a Danvanthari tree. Other amenities include Gowshala, guest house, a free health care centre, a stall for buying pooja items, a book shop that deals with Sai-related CDs & books, a canteen, etc.  In addition to the Aarthi, special poojas are done only on request. The poor are fed here in large numbers. Thread ceremonies, marriage ceremonies, and other social events are also conducted on request.
