𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
Miles Morales had escaped, run amok to another world. Jess and Ben were trying to hunt him down, but with no back history on the Go Home Machine, they were stuck playing the waiting game. Margo was working on it, but Miguel had a hunch that her heart wasn't in on it. Traitors, everywhere. And the most painful traitor of all refused to meet his eye. Miguel sat on a chair in front the containment bubble, elbows on his knees with his hands laced together. Y/N had been sealed away, red filament twisting around her like a hamster ball, or a puffed up cocoon. The grapefruit glow bounced off her skin, casting an ominous light over the blooming bruises around her midsection, where her suit had torn from the glass, where Miguel had hurt her. He hated self-confliction. Y/N had betrayed him, the Spider-Society, the multiverse-willingly aided Miles in his escape. She probably was the reason he got away. Y/N had made the conscious choice to forsake the canon. She had known Miles for all of an hour, at most. Y/N threw away everything to help a teenager that (to Miguel, at least) had no idea the damage he was causing. She completely the deserved the situation she was in. It didn't matter what the reasoning was. And now she sat, curled up in a fetal position on the floor, trapped inside a containment bubble, her back to him. Y/N didn't meet his eye, but he knew it wasn't an act of shame or cowardice. It was the idea that he wasn't worthy of it; the idea that he didn't deserve to see her eyes. That she wouldn't even grace him with the idea that she was looking at him. She was being punished like a toddler with time out. Y/N had made a mistake.
But Miguel loved her.
He couldn't dance around the word anymore. There was a monster clutching his beating heart, and it haunted his immortal soul. It was love, as twisted and convoluted as it was. Love for a woman that had her back to him, pointedly refusing to speak. Miguel had seen her anger before. Being on the receiving end felt like a nightmare. Just silence, as thought the two of them were preschoolers and the silent treatment was the most lethal weapon in the schoolyard. He expected her vitriol to be loud, the kind that breeds screaming matches-not this.
"Y/N." Miguel was met with (shocker!) more silence. "Where did Miles go? This is important." Silence. "Why would you do this. You've potentially damned the multiverse." Y/N shuffled a bit, if only to wiggly further away. "You've helped disrupt the canon." Miguel sighs. "You're an adult. You should know better. Miles was a stupid kid-" "That you body-slammed into a train." Y/N finally spoke, biting like a viper and tilting her head a bit to look at Miguel out of the corner of her eye. "A 15-year-old that you saw fit to chase on all fours. His reaction was reasonable." Miguel's conflict swelled. Y/N was talking in that dulcet angel tone, so succulent despite her anger. But her insistence was irritating. She absolutely should've understood, better than any of the teenagers, her little acolytes. Miles was new. It was true that his reaction was...understandable, to a degree. Hobie always broke the rules anyway. Gwen was going through a rough time, and Pav was there to have a good time. But Y/N's brother died because of an anomaly. She of all people should know the threat they pose.
"We tried explaining it to him. It was his choice that he didn't listen. You, on the other hand, you knew the consequences." "I'd rather be a proper hero and fight for what's right, to help those that need help. That's a concept that's hard for you to understand, right?" "Oh, so trying to protect the multiverse is wrong. Okay, okay. Esto es ridículo.♱" Miguel rose from the chair, muttering under his breath and turning with his hands on his hips. His head was reeling. He knew Y/N was stubborn, but this was absurd. "I'm holding every Spider, every world, together!" "Says the guy who didn't even get bit!" Y/N counters, quick as lightning. "If your canon events are so true, then how is Nueva York standing? You answer me that!" "Canon events can differ-" "By so much that there's not even a spider? Get real, Miguel! The kid isn't doing the-the-the-!" Y/N tripped over her words, rising from her curl on the ground and talking with her hands, trying to get her thoughts in one row. "The devastation that you think he is! Canon isn't infallible!" Miguel whipped around, realising he'd come face to face with Y/N. She was panting like a dog, a scowl buried under a grimace buried under a glare. Her eyes were steely, finally meeting Miguel's eyes like rocks crashing with the sea. It was a clash of wills.
And Miguel hated how much he loved it.
What a woman, honestly. If she was this passionate about protecting a teenager she'd just met, what would she be like with her own kids? Miguel was sure that Y/N would be wonderful, always coming to the kid's defense, without question. That venomous tongue would be soft-spoken to a child, one that would have Y/N's eyes and Miguel's hair. Maybe a little girl, a Gabriella that would truly be Miguel's own. No switching places with the dead. No feigning love for a woman he didn't know. No technicolour nightmares. His own little girl, from his own wife. And god! Y/N as a wife! She'd be so sweet, waking Miguel up in the mornings with light kisses, whispering sweet nothings to him, letting his hands water as his slips out of groggy dreams. The rising sun on her skin would light her up like a holy statue, and the moment Miguel was conscious he'd be happy (honoured) to worship. From the second he woke up, to the second he fell asleep, he'd be worshipping, down to his dreams being dictated by Y/N. Holidays, weekends, family trips, saving the multiverse together...it would be-
"What, you going brain dead? Are you even listening?"
Y/N's biting words dragged Miguel back to reality, as hateful as the idea of reality was. His daydreams were so much kinder than this. She was still upset, still trapped behind that red barrier, and they were still enemies. But after the vision of what they could have, it was like a tease to just keep playing cat and mouse. It would be cruel and unusual punishment to torture himself like that. It'd take convincing. A lot of it. But Y/N wasn't unreasonable. She was noble at heart and maybe a bit naïve. But she was a Spider at the end of the day, always looking for the best solution to terrible problems. And that's where it's important. That's okay. Relationships were about compromise, after all. "Y/N." Miguel spoke softly. He really couldn't hide his affections for much longer. It was spilling out of him like a cup, pouring through the cracks and spilling over the sides. And he saw how Y/N shifted. He could tell that she was figuring it out. She could see how he moved. And she slowly backed to the other side of the containment bubble, moving further away until her back was against the wall. Did it break his heart? A little bit, but this was going to take time. All things would.
"Y/N," He repeated. "We...really shouldn't fight. We're-we're special, you and I." Miguel got close to the containment bubble, watching Y/N.
He didn't realise it, but sometime in the last fifteen minutes, the bubble's purpose had changed. It started out as capturing a prisoner, a traitor, someone who was dangerous and could be a threat to society as a whole. But it changed to a shield, protecting a prey animal from a predator. It was Y/N's last safeguard from Miguel doing anything unwise. The dynamic shifted. Y/N could tell it-every hair was on end, every sense was on fire. But Miguel was oblivious. "I'm gonna shut this off," He tapped on the filament, and Y/N swallowed. "Promise me you won't go running off. We can have an adult conversation. We can talk." And maybe Y/N should've protested. She could've asked to keep it on, but who'd admit they were scared in a situation like this? So she stayed silent. She kept in her corner, and irritation reared it's ugly head again. Miguel was trying to be cordial. Why wouldn't she just promise? He was offering her freedom.
(Somewhat. Details didn't matter, not here, not now.)
It's not like he was going to hurt her. It's two measly words. Two words in exchange for a lifetime and some of love, affection, devotion. Was that really too hard of a deal?
"Promise." Miguel growled.
Instantly, Y/N put her hands up in mock surrender. "Promise! I promise." Miguel's heart bloomed. She could be so charming when she wanted to be. So disciplined and playful, a good wife, a good lover. Listening was the first step, and she was listening. Miguel could only grin. "Okay." He put his hands to the barrier as his heart raced. He was so close. A step or two more, and he would have the love of his life in his arms. And Y/N was staying still. There was no tension that he could see. She didn't look like she was about to run. She was just nervous. The red barrier folded out of itself, and quiet suddenly, it was just Miguel and Y/N in a room. When was the last time they'd done this? Miguel couldn't remember the last time it was just them. It was always either in fleeting moments or with other Spiders around. It was impossible to get Y/N alone, no matter how hard he tried. But here she was, just him and her and them and an empty room where no one was going to stop them. She didn't move, watching him like he were a predator in the savannah. Miguel didn't like to say that he was excited, per se. But there wasn't really another word for it.
His eyes scanned over Y/N's pretty face, every inch memorised in Miguel's mind. Her sharp eyes. Her cute nose. Her pretty lips. Her pretty lips. What would they taste like? Did she use lip gloss? What would that taste like? How would it feel to have her lips linger on his? These were dire questions, and Miguel was done waiting. He walked up to Y/N, slow and purposeful. He had to seem as non-threatening as possible to pull this off. And quick, because chances were Y/N was going to do something harsh, like slap him. But it was a small price to pay. After all, he had his whole life with Y/N ahead of him. He just needed to get it started.
Y/N was by no means a stupid woman.
She grew up with the same precautions every other girl did. Don't talk to strangers, they don't have candy in their van, and know when men are about to jump your bones. And in this case, she could practically smell Miguel's thoughts, like the gears in his brain were making smoke from how hard they were churning. She trusted him as far as she could throw him, if she tried throwing him when she was 12 and before she got bitten. That is to say, she didn't trust Miguel at all. He was a stupid, stupid man, and she needed to bolt. So, that's exactly what she did. Promises, schromises. Y/N could say whatever it took for Miguel to let her go, but at the end of the day, she had a responsibility to herself. For all his talk about having an adult conversation, she knew what the look in his eyes was. And when he began reaching for her cheek, Y/N knew it was now or never. Miguel's body weight was enough that she could web him up and hurl him into the nearby wall. It was like watching a cannonball get launched a Mach speed, and his surprised yelp was far more satisfying than it should've been. But he'd done this to himself, and as Y/N booked it down the hallway, she knew she was on a divine clock. Either luck or skill was going to get her out alive, and luck was unreliable at best. She had her hands, her webs, and her brain. That was going to have to make do.
A vast majority of the Spider-People were out, either in their own worlds or helping hunt down Miles. Poor Miles. He just wanted to save his dad. Y/N did her best, did the most she could, but right now? Right now, she had to focus on getting out alive, preferably with her pride intact. And as she heard Miguel's thundering footsteps behind her, an anguished yell, she found it in herself to go impossibly faster. Maybe if she was an outside observer, it would've been funny-a woman booking it past someone standing, only to be followed by a massive, 6'9 blue and red bullet on all fours. Wow. Miguel really did like just running like a dog. Y/N dove down into the lobby of the Spider-Society, ducking and weaving under bridges and platforms. Miguel leapt like an animal, clawing his way onto a platform above and dropping down.
"Stop running!" He barked, getting up to two legs again and reaching out. Y/N could feel his claws miss by a hair, and she leapt off the edge, swinging around and swerving to a platform above, stumbling into the containment room. Rows and rows and rows of sunset orange, anomalies staring at her with wide-confused eyes. None of them were the ones she'd caught, and as she heard Miguel claw up the side of the wall, she knew running wouldn't work forever. She had to do what Miles did-hide, outlast, outplay. These kids were getting too damn smart. Y/N dove behind the anomalous Rhino, praying that it wouldn't elect to shuffle over. It was the biggest thing in the room, the most stationary-and now Y/N realised she was putting far too much stock in luck. If Miguel found her, she genuinely didn't know what he would do. Would he cage her again? Hurt her? Kill her? It all seemed to be a possibility, all at once.
Now, all she could was hope the anomalies didn't sell her out.
In all honesty, she wouldn't blame them. The Spiders didn't have the most ethical treatment of anomalies. She wasn't even sure if they got fed, or what. But maybe a shared hatred for one particular Spider-Man would get it across. Y/N shared a look with a Doc Ock, and he stared at her. She grit her teeth, praying that somehow, the silent prayer would get across. A twitch throbbed in her neck from sheer tension, before the Doc Ock gave a barely noticeable nod. He looked away. It's a cold day in hell when the villains understood Y/N better than the 'good guys' did. Miguel burst into the room, claws tearing up the metal floor. Y/N could see a handful of the anomalies jump, all eyes on him. She had her back to him, and part of her hated how she'd put herself in such a compromising position. Short of her spider-senses, she wouldn't have a clue if she needed to run, and right now, she was having a Spider-Woman check engine light with how much the sense was going off already. It was rendered useless, because thank you very much, she was aware she was in danger.
"Vamos. Prometo que seré gentil.♱" Miguel cooed, heavy steps reverberating throughout the room. Maybe he was muttering to himself, or he genuinely was trying to speak to Y/N, but she knew better than to just leap out and go 'I'm here! Come and get me!'. Spider-Man was funny, but he wasn't stupid. And the same went for his 7290 variant. The anomalies all went silent, and Y/N felt her mouth go dry. It'd been so long since she'd last felt this genuinely terrified. Last time, she was 14, sobbing in an alleyway as she watched her uncle die. This time, she was being hunted by an obsessed, genetically infused daddy longlegs. This was absolutely, totally, completely fine.
"Mi corazón es tuyo. ¿Qué más se puede pedir?♱" Miguel kept muttering to himself, low and quiet and enough that if Y/N didn't have superior hearing, she wouldn't have picked it up. "I need you, I need you, I need you...you need me."
Mm. Y/N wrinkled her nose at that. That just sounded stupid.
Y/N kept her breathing controlled, trying to tame the soreness in her lungs and the shuddering breaths. Bile pooled in her throat as she heard Miguel slowly walk past the rhino, a shake in her hands that she hated acknowledging. But Miguel was terrifying. He was the ultimate predator, trying to hunt Y/N down like prey. She was prey, for the first time in years. She figured that maybe, if they'd done a better job of convincing Miles, then it would make sense. But if this was what the boy was seeing, feeling, then no wonder. She would've jumped off the bullet highway, too. Abruptly, there was a sudden crash, and Y/N's head whipped around to see that Miguel had thrown one of the containment contraptions, hurling it to the wall opposite to her. She practically jumped out of her skin, the bile leaping to her tongue in a bitter, acidic taste. Miguel swore hard in Spanish, howling like an injured dog, damaging more equipment and clawing up anything that wasn't an anomaly. With every hit, every swipe, Y/N flinched, because holy shit that could be her. He could pop her head off with a single slightly hard hit, and it'd be over.
He stalked out of the room, leaping down to the Go Home Machine below. Y/N's sigh of relief felt like it was shared with the whole room, all the anomalies relaxing at once. It's like a thread had been pulled out of a fabric, letting it finally fall the way it was meant to. One anomaly, a fucked up Green Goblin, did a dramatic flop to the floor. Y/N shut her eyes, taking a deep breath. At this point, she'd just abandon ship-leap out the nearest window and web her way out of the city before Miguel could deactivate her watch. And even if he did, then she'd hide out. Nueva York was insane, a metal jungle. She could spend the rest of her life hiding out there, if she had to.
"Beep beep."
Y/N's eyes flew open, looking to her left. Her gut plummeted. Miguel's golden boy, his favourite, one of their best, stood next to her, exactly 4 centimetres high. LEGO Spider-Man, with his teeny little watch. Before, Y/N thought he was cute, like a dog or something. But as his watch flickered to life and the visage of Miguel appeared, she regretted every single instance of her almost stepping on him. "H-Hey, wait-!" She whispered, harsh. "Don't-!" "Miguel, I got eyes on Y/N!" LEGO Spider-Man moved in a way that only a LEGO minifigure could, his head rotating a little bit. The Miguel avatar slowly turned, locking eyes with Y/N, and her blood froze. "Thanks, Peter. You're one of our best for a reason." "Beep beep." LEGO Spider-Man shut off the watch, looking to Y/N. "Sorry. Nothing personal." There was silence for a second.
"Peter." Y/N said. "You fucking suck."
She picked up the LEGO and proceeded to chuck him as far as she possibly could, launching him into the lobby and watching him fall. Some of the anomalies groaned, and already Y/N could hear Miguel barreling his way back to the room. Why the hell could she not catch a break? She only had a handful of options, most of which weren't actually options she could do. There was turning herself in-a non-option. There was calling for help-another non-option. And then there was simply...jumping out the window. The same thing Miles did. Which...felt cliché. Would Miguel really fall for the same thing twice? Literally? Miguel ran into the room, sliding across the floor. There was a moment where he looked up to Y/N, eyes wide and wild. His grin was wide, panting hard with his fangs poking his bottom lip. A flush had bloomed on his face, his eyes blown out like he was on drugs. "There you are," He hissed.
Well. The window it was.
Y/N's sides still hurt from the last time she got tossed out a window. This time, she gave herself the courtesy of bracing herself with her arms, but the glass still hurt like hell. It cut into her arms as Miguel genuinely shrieked, running out after her. There was a moment where Y/N was just in a free-fall, taking a second to reflect on her situation. Did she wake up this morning expecting any of this? No. If she had, she would've texted her neighbour to keep an eye on her fish. But nooo. She just had to get herself mixed up in super-hero shenanigans. She crossed her arms, a petulant scowl on her face. Maybe she still could call to make sure her fish would be okay. Miguel hurtled out the window after her, a hand reaching out to catch the front of her suit. His claws were out, the extra inch and a half proving far more of a threat than Y/N liked. She spun down and webbed Miguel's foot, yanking him down and using him as velocity to shove herself up. He tried the same trick on her, but if there was one thing she had on the 'kilogram of steel vs kilogram of feathers' built Spider was that she was that much faster. She yanked her foot out of the way, webbing to the side of the Spider-Society and slamming into the glass of a floor she'd never even been on before. Miguel plummeted like a brick to the ground, webbing to a building that was that much lower. Y/N had a total of two minutes to decide what the hell she was going to do. So...what was she going to do?
♱ - This is ridiculous. - Come on out. I promise I'll be gentle. - My heart is yours. What more could you ask for?

Hi Kavi! I was hoping I could request prompts 24 an 81 with desi!reader and Oscar Piastri where like both of them are cricket fans and have like a playful rivalry?
Feel free to incorporate it as u want (IK it's a bit of a weird request) .
Take ur time and i hope u have a great day:)))

The pub was buzzing with energy, full of excited chatter and clinking glasses. A bunch of cricket fans had all gathered to watch the super-hyped match between India and Australia. You and Oscar had managed to score a table near the front, the best seats in the house—well, for those who actually cared about cricket.
Oscar was already in his Australian jersey, scanning the crowd as he spoke with a half-smirk on his face. "I can't believe we're doing this," he said, his tone amused, though his eyes remained glued to the screen. "You're gonna lose today, I just know it."
You laughed. "Oh, please. India's got this in the bag. You guys are just pretending to be competitive.
He raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Pretending? You do know that Australia has one of the world's best cricket teams, don't you?"
You leaned in, your voice dripping with mock sympathy. "Well, someone has to support the underdogs."
Oscar laughed softly, clearly not fazed by your banter. "You're lucky I love you. Or else I'd be taking this way too seriously."
"Oh, I know. I could pick you out from a room full of thousands of people because you'd be the one sulking when India wins."
Oscar shot you a look. "You know that doesn't work on me anymore."
The match started, and the pub fell into a hushed silence as everyone focused on the screen. You and Oscar sat side by side, as was your wont, exchanging light jabs between sips of beer.
Australia's first over was quick and aggressive, and Oscar couldn't help but beam every time one of the Australian players made a good play. You, on the other hand, were practically bouncing in your seat every time India made a run. It was a sight to behold—your intense concentration and exaggerated cheers for every boundary.
This is it! This is the over!" you yelled, practically standing on your seat when an Indian player took a powerful swing. Oscar rolled his eyes, but there was a fondness in his smile as he glanced at you.
"You're impossible," he muttered, chuckling to himself.
And finally, after a few tense overs, you excused yourself to the bathroom. "Be right back! Don't get too cocky while I'm gone," you warned Oscar.
Oscar just waved you off, grinning. "Of course, of course. Hurry along; you don't want to be missed during the inevitable collapse of your own side!"
You flipped him off behind your back, and smiled when you heard his laughter.
The moment you vanished from view, Oscar turned back to the game, completely focused on the match. However, after a few minutes, he began to notice something: the crowd seemed different. People were shifting around, voices getting louder, but no sign of you. He looked around. No sign of your bright, beaming smile, no sign of your dramatic, loud cheers.
His eyes narrowed.
You had been away for merely a few minutes, yet Oscar didn't like that. There was a mild knot in his stomach as he pushed his way through the crowd, his eyes scanning to find you.
Meanwhile, you'd become sidetracked by a scene of some Australians celebrating the wicket of an Australian when you didn't even notice it until you'd meandered over there joining in on the celebration. You were pushing through the crowd when your foot caught onto something-a stray chair leg-and suddenly, everything was tipping to one side.
"Oh, no—" you mumbled to yourself as you went tumbling forward, your arms flailing wildly as your drink went flying out of your hand.
Before you could hit the ground, you felt a pair of strong arms catch you, pulling you back up with a swiftness that made you blink in surprise.
"Careful there," Oscar's voice was low, full of both amusement and concern as he steadied you, his hands on your shoulders.
You looked up at him, your heart racing a little from the sudden stumble. "I—uh—I might've gotten distracted, just a little," you stammered, your face flushing in embarrassment. "And now my drink is definitely gone."
Oscar let out a small laugh, a playful glint in his eyes. "I see. Distracted by the crowd, were you?
You groaned, smoothing your clothes. "Totally. I was just trying to enjoy the match, and then—well, here we are."
Oscar shook his head fondly, his expression softening. "Well, I could have told you that the pub floor isn't a good place to practice your cricket swings." He gave you a little nudge, making sure you were steady on your feet.
"Hey!" you shot him a playful glare. "I didn't need you to be my personal bodyguard, okay? I'm perfectly capable of not falling flat on my face."
Oscar's smile softened. His voice dropped a little lower, filled with an affectionate warmth. "I'm just looking out for you," he said, his hand brushing your cheek as if reassuring you that he wasn't letting you out of his sight. "You're clumsy, but I've got you, always."
It made your heart skip a beat to listen to him speak, always making you feel safe even when you were being the clumsy self that you mostly were.
"Well, I wasn't planning on a somersault. But thanks for catching me," you said, a little softer now.
"No problem," Oscar said, and his grin was back on his face. "Just keeping my beautiful girlfriend from public humiliation." His words were laced with that teasing tone, but behind it was something protective. It warmed your heart.
You rolled your eyes, but secretly you were grateful. "I swear, you're the only person who's actually prepared for my clumsiness."
"Well, it's not a bad thing," he said with a sly smile, brushing a lock of hair away from your face. "Keeps life interesting."
Before you could react, a deafening cheer went through the crowd—India hit a six, and you couldn't help but spring to your feet, forgetting all about the embarrassing fall you had made some minutes ago. Oscar retreated, but his hand reached up to the small of your back, urging you along as you leapt around with excitement, not letting you fall again. It was such a simple, protective gesture, but it made your heart flutter.
The match was nearing its end, and the banter between you two was endless. Even if you were supporting different teams, there was something playful about the competition that just made everything a little funnier.
"Well, at least you're not completely useless when it comes to cricket," Oscar teased, as you cheered another Indian run in. "But I still don't think they are going to win. Australia's just better.
You shot him a teasing grin, tapping your fingers on the table. "We'll see, Piastri. We'll see. Just remember, even if India loses, I'll still be able to claim victory in this pub rivalry."
Oscar smiled, his eyes softening as he watched you, the warmth between you two undeniable. "You really think that's how this works, don't you?
"I know you think you can win everything, but sometimes, it's not about who wins the match," you said, grinning. "It's about who can outlast the other in teasing and banter."
Oscar gave you a sidelong glance, his tone more playful than ever, but his voice dropped lower, his gaze softening. "Well, lucky for you, I'm good at both. But when you trip again, I'll be right here—ready to protect you from another graceful tumble." His fingers intertwined with yours, reminding you that he was always there.
You grinned back at him, shaking your head. "Let's just hope my cricket team doesn't disappoint before I do."
Oscar's eyes softened, his hand finding yours and giving it a gentle squeeze. "Don't worry. You'll always be the winner to me—clumsy or not."
The match ended, with Australia securing the victory, but it didn't matter to you. The real prize was how comfortable and loved you felt next to Oscar.
As you both stood up to leave, the crowd still celebrating the match's conclusion, you turned to Oscar with a grin.
"Alright, Piastri. You won this round," you said with mock reluctance, knowing full well that your playful rivalry wasn't ending here.
Oscar pulled you into a quick, warm hug; his arms wrapped around you protectively. "Don't worry, I'll let you win next time. But only if you promise not to fall over in public again."
You smiled, wrapping your arms around him, your voice soft as you replied, "Only if you promise to be there to catch me.
Oscar’s smile softened, and he kissed the top of your head. “I’ll always be here. To catch you. and to win the next round of cricket, obviously.”
You looked up at him, your heart swelling with affection. “You’ve got a deal, Piastri.”
The playful banter and rivalry were still alive but, in this moment, it was clear—there was nothing you'd rather do than share these little, perfect moments with him. And as long as he was by your side, even if you tripped and fell a hundred more times, you'd always feel like a winner.

consider me a house fandom Australian Cultural Liason: here’s some chase family christmas headcanons!
rowan and his mum definitely drag chase and retcon sister along to midnight mass on christmas day. it, as the name suggests, starts at midnight (imagine sitting awake in lousy wooden chairs on CHRISTMAS EVE/DAY as like. an eight year old. catholicism is stupid) and includes receiving communion (the little wafer, and the wine if you’re old enough). there’s a roman catholic communion chant specific to midnight mass for all you latin enjoyers (me): in splendoribus sanctorum, ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te (in the brightness of the saints, from the womb, before the day star, i begot you)
it’s hot and dry this time of year in australia, so spending the whole of christmas day or boxing day at the beach or the pool is common. i imagine chase and his sister competing in made-up competitions — “i bet i can make the water splash taller with a cannonball!” — with their mum as a judge
“classic catches” is a common one: basically, one person throws the cricket ball out across the pool, and the other takes the most spectacular jump/dive they can to try and catch it before landing in the water (there’s a bluey episode about it). we see chase catch pens/case files/miscellaneous objects a few times throughout the show, so i think he’s honed the skill through games like this lol
bundaberg ginger beer is a classic aussie drink for the summer. it’s not alcoholic, and kind of a stronger ginger ale, made in queensland. virtually synonymous with summer. chase feels like an adult holding the heavy glass bottle, sipping it by the pool, trying not to screw up his face at the strong taste
his family have a christmas day lunch with. yes: prawns on the barbecue. but if i catch any of you calling them shrimp i will have harsh words. you’ve been warned
i have no idea whether other places do this, but christmas meals in australia usually feature ‘christmas crackers’ or ‘bonbons’ (there is a bluey episode about these too). they’re paper and kind of shaped like wrapped tootsie rolls, with trinkets, paper crowns, and little joke cards inside the middle. they’re called crackers because you open them by pulling on either side with someone else, tug-of-war style, and when one side breaks, a little fire cracker lights and makes a small explosion with a crack sound. i think chase looooooves the stupid little crowns and wore them all day as a kid.
on boxing day every year, australia hosts a match of test cricket against another international cricket team. cricket is a slow sport (the boxing day test is like five days long), but visit any aussie household with an adult man present, and the boxing day test is absolutely on the tv. it’s one of those things that make most australians patriotic, even if for the rest of the year they couldn’t care less. i don’t think chase was a cricket kid, but he liked watching craig mcdermott’s fast-bowling against india in ‘85. gave him something to talk about with his mates when school started again.
that said, rowan absolutely had tickets to the big game almost every year, either as work gifts or consolation for his wife and kids when he couldn’t (read: didn’t want to) be there during the holiday celebrations. since it’s held at the melbourne cricket ground, chase probably attended a few. they’re gruelling all-day matches, and not exactly entertaining for young kids, but chase probably looks back at the memories fondly: his mum slathering him with zinc and bug spray, constantly yelling at him to keep his hat on, promising to buy him an icecream at half-time
chase seemed pretty aware of his surroundings as a kid, at least in his home. he never failed to catch his mum’s solemn expressions while cleaning up wrapping paper and preparing platters of fruit and cold cuts, while retcon sister played happily with her presents. rowan never labelled his gifts “from Santa”, not even when retcon sister was young enough not to know: their mum always did.
every year, chase was jealous of retcon sister about something. did she get a larger slice of panettone? did she get one more gift from rowan? did she get to be blissfully ignorant on christmas day, swimming and snacking and not having to worry about how many times mum had topped up her white wine, or how heavy her sighs became as the day got hotter? their competition wasn’t always friendly — sometimes he got pissy, and spat cruel insults at her until she ran off to cry in private. neither of them ever told their mother
#me begging the fandom to australianise their chase writing#diversify the portfolio etc#rowan was probably there for christmas about 20% of the time#used his fame and work as an excuse#these are headcanons for a pretty young chase#before shit well and truly fell apart#there’s still plenty to work with tho#god midnight mass is so FUCKING boring y’all#i also imagine some czech food integrated into their christmas eve/day meals but i cannot contribute any cultural knowledge on that front#robert chase#house md#malpractice md

How do gaming chairs differ from traditional office chairs in terms of design and comfort?
Gaming chairs and typical office chairs have different designs and comfort levels. Gaming chairs have a racing-inspired design with high backrests and bright colors to ensure comfort during long gaming sessions. They include ample padding, adjustable armrests, and reclining capabilities for flexible seating positions. Traditional office chairs, on the other hand, have a more subtle design with neutral hues that emphasize ergonomic support for regular office use. They provide basic adjustment options such as seat height and tilt tension control. Depending on your requirements, you can select a gaming chair for maximum comfort while gaming or a typical office chair for ergonomic support in professional settings. Visit Royaloak for a diverse collection of gaming and regular office chairs.

Hola linda, cómo estás? Me está encantando el reto de los 10 días jajaja. podrías agregar algo obsceno de Dusan Vlahovic? ❤️❤️
Sí, claro ❤️
10 DAYS OF REQUESTS
(DAY 6)
Dusan Vlahovic x Reader - Take A Chance
+18
Summary - Dusan asks Reader to go out with him. But you turn him down not once but twice.
Enjoy! 🙈
"Why are we here again?"
"Because we're single and need boyfriends."
"I'm not single?"
"And I don't need a boyfriend."
"Please guys, we've been over this."
A night out with your friends always began with the same old bickering of which bar you should go to and what people to talk to at the selcted bar.
It was getting old.
Not to mention, super annoying.
Especially since you've sworn to cut out brainless men from your life. Of course, this didn't leave you much to choose from. Nevertheless, no more men, and no more lazy hookups. Too bad your best friend India thought otherwise.
"Women should at least be getting laid three times a week, single or not." She stated, the three of you scoping out for the hotties upon your entrance to a buzzing location.
"So we're here to get laid? Why didn't you just say so?" Hailey frowned. However, by saying we, she really didn't mean herself. As of last month, Hailey was in a happy relationship with a guy named Frank. You liked Frank, who knew how to make a great cup of coffee.
"Because Hailey, that's what guys say, not girls." India emphasized, resulting in the three of you laughing your way over to the bar.
It was a fancy new place, opened not too long ago. You had actually been asked to come here before. However, the person who asked you out was a complete asshole, resulting in you declining his offer more than once.
"Y/N, is that you?"
Speaking of the devil.
"Well, well, well, guess you've changed your mind about me?" Dusan smirked.
He was one of those guys who always found a reason to mention their net worth sporadically in the middle of a conversation. Same for the price of his latest investments. Like a watch or a brand new Jeep.
Dusan Vlahovic was a wanna be Wolf of Wall Street kind of guy. Except, Dusan played professional football for a living, which might count as an explanation for his out of touch for a woman's desire, considering that he often had hundreds of them throwing themselves at him during a night out like this.
Everyone but you, of course.
"You must have smelled my new perfume." He chuckled cheaply. "It's the new Dior fragrance. I'm actually their newest brand ambassador."
"Cool." Your friends expressed. They were clearly taken aback by Dusan's God complex. The way he stood tall and erect, like a rooster in the morning. He had slick back hair, with a few wild hairstrands irritating his eyes.
Overall, he was gorgeous. Your type, even. However, his personality was honestly so arrogant that it had become unbearable to reject him as many times as you had. Unfortunately, he was always given a new chance to ask you out, considering that the two of you lived in the same apartment building not too far away from this very bar.
"You girls should come over to our table." He suggested. "My friends and I are happy to put your drinks on our tab."
India and Hailey shared a smug look. You, on the other hand, let your eyes roll into the back of your sockets. Dusan caught your moment of dread, winking his eye at you before leading you and your friends to his table.
The three of you were quickly introduced to Dusan's mates, four guys, a copy paste when it came to their swayed shoes and unbuttoned shirts. They also wore watches, shiny bedazzled watches that most likely told the time. But how would one know with all that bling blinding the eye at every glance.
"So...." Dusan said as he slid into the seat next to yours, resting his arm on the back of your chair. "Does this count as our first date?"
You snorted. "Keep dreaming."
His eyebrows rose with interest, your habit of rejection another game for him to play. After a few drinks shared between you, Dusan took it upon himself to tugg your chair towards him, for the two of you to sit closer together.
"Just looking after you, baby. We wouldn't want you to get too tipsy and fall off your chair, now would we?"
"What do you think you're doing?"
"You're such an asshole." You said, but noted the slurring of your words. Perhaps you did have too much to drink? That's what you get for trying to keep up with India, an avid drinker since your university days.
"Guys, I've got to go. I'm sorry."
"Hailey, no!"
You and India jumped out of your seats to persuade your friend to stay. However. Hailey's night was over. She had a warm bed and a boyfriend waiting for her at home. You longed to return home yourself. To wash away your sins and tuck yourself into your very own cozy bed. However, you couldn't leave India, who unfortunately took an interest in one of Dusan's friends. The two of them were bound to go home together. You just had to stay until they did. In the meantime, you had Dusan, persistently mumbling temptations in your ear.
"I'll take you to Paris someday."
"Oh, yeah, and what would the two of us do in Paris, France?"
"The usual." He shrugged. But then a dangerous smile widened his lips. "But once we are done being tourists, I'd take you back to our hotel room, five stars, of course...." You rolled your eyes. "There I'd have my way with you in the elevator, making you scream my name before we even arrived at our room."
"The elevator, you say?"
"Yes, the elevator." He purred, his voice deep in your ear, his lips close enough to carress the pulse beating in your throat. "I'd have my fingers so deep in your pussy that if I wanted to I could make you a squirter, even if you told me that you aren't one."
"I—." Out of all the tasteless endearments Dusan could have whispered in your ear, this one definitely took the prize. But at the same time, your legs crossed under the table, smothering the flaring heat between your legs.
It must be the alcohol you convinced yourself. Yes. Your terrible ability to consume alcohol without stumbling after two shots was really deceiving your mind tonight. How else would you explain the fact that you let Dusan take you home while India and Dusan's friend disappeared in an Uber together at the end of the night?
The alcohol worsened your judgment of Dusan, convincing you that he wouldn't take advantage of the situation.
"Fuck, I think I'm going to throw up."
"You are? Fuck, my apartment is closer than yours."
He really played his cards well, convincing you to step out of the elevator two floors below yours. However, you were grateful to reach a bathroom in time for you to empty your guts. Too bad your top got ruined in the process.
"Here, let's get you out of this."
You even let the asshole undress you, watching him throw your vomit stained clothes into his washing machine. You then waited patiently for him to return to the bathroom with a clean shirt for you to wear to bed.
His bed.
"Why are you even doing this?" You asked, watching Dusan as he tucked you in.
"What? Help you?" He frowned.
"Yes, and flirt with me so desperately even though you can get any ine of those girls in the bar we just left."
Dusan hid his smile while he fluffed the pillow beside your head. He then maid you raise yourself to sit so he could tuck it comfortably behind your back. "There." He said, complecant, leaving his hands to rest on each side of your head.
You were close.
Too close for comfort considering the smell of vomit on your breath. Who would want to kiss you now? Certainly not Dusan.
Yes. It was indeed embarrassing to admit that a microscopic part of you wanted Dusan's lips against yours. Maybe the alcohol enhanced your attraction for him. However, your stomach was already fluttering as the two of you sat close together in the bar, Dusan's deep and rich voice whispering in your ear.
"God, Y/N." He scoffed.
"What?" You perked up, afraid that he didn't like what he saw as his eyes were upon you, studying you like a puzzle.
Dusan shook his head, a sly smile on his lips. "You really believe that I left the bar without the girl that I wanted."
"Well, didn't you?"
"No Y/N. You're the girl that I want."
"I am?"
"Yes." He chuckled, raising his hand to pinch your cheek. "I've been dying to have you for months. Ever since we first road the elevator together. All I've wanted is for you to take a chance on me, but every time you've turned me down."
"I'm sorry." You squealed. "I really don't know...." That was a lie. You were done with brainless men. You said so yourself. Dusan, however, perhaps wasn't one of them.
Who are you kidding? Of course he was. He looked eager to kiss you despite the vomit on your breath.
"Dusan?"
"Yes?" He watched you lick your lips, the swipe of your tongue making his dick twitch below his pants.
"I want you to..." You were shy to say the words.
"Yeah?"
You perked up, adjusting the way you sat in his bed. "I really want you to...."
"Y/N, if you don't tell me what you want from me, I might go crazy." He laughed.
You emphasized the words, making sure not to slur on any of them. "Dusan, I want you to make me squirt. Please make me a squirter—."
You barely finished the words. The last thing you saw was Dusan's eyes widening before his head ducked under the covers.
"Dusan." You squealed, his lips tracing softly down your legs, causing you to throw your head back with laughter. "Please baby, not so fast."
"Baby?" Dusan's hair was tousled as his head popped out from under the covers, a boyish grin occupying his face. "You called me baby."
"I did." You smiled.
"I like that. Keep calling me that."
Another fit of laughter escaped your mouth as Dusan's head returned under the covers. His pursuit to make you a squirter started off with a couple of soft kisses to your thighs. He then moved on to reveal the soft hair covering your pussy, parting the small strands with his tounge. He did so until his tounge knocked against the bud of your clit, making you moan his name as your head flattened against the pillow, digging you deeper into a sea of utter excitement.
"Dusan."
"Fuck Y/N, you're so wet already." He started teasing you with his fingers, driving you closer to the eruption of your soul.
"Please, don't stop." You pleaded, spreading your legs with width for Dusan's fingers to sink deeper into you. He came up to kiss you, his fingers remaining inside, pumping in and out of you like a well-oiled machine.
"Dusan, please. I'm not clean." You turned your face away from his lips. However, Dusan kept returning for more, threatening to pull his fingers out of you.
"No, please. Don't." You begged, pathetically so.
"Then let me kiss you." He laughed. But didn't kid when it came to wanting your lips against his own. He was good at it too, finding a rhythm in the way that his fingers moved inside of your pussy to match the way his tounge moved inside of your mouth.
That must have been it. A combination of Dusan's fingers and mouth, a rhythmic machine that sent unbearable vibrations down your spine. Vibrations that turned into a violent twich of your pussy walls clenching around his fingers that kept penetrating your reaching edge.
"Dusan, please. I'm gonna...."
"Yes, baby. You're almost there."
"I'm gonna...."
"Yes, sweetheart. Hold on to that feeling for me."
You arched your back with the ripping sensation. A violent feeling of pleasure and pain bottled up into a narrow pipe of anticipation.
"There you go. Good girl."
A loud whimper left your mouth when you exhaled, the orgasm leaving you like a fever dream. Dusan tugged his fingers out of your pussy, holding up his drenched hand to show off the results.
"Congratulations, you're a squirter."
Your hands covered your face, embarrassed yet, happily satisfied.

I really want to have sex with you right now. + checo perez
but make it engineer + checo in a meeting for work
I don't get to write checo often so here you go 👍🏽 // prompt: I really want to have sex with you right now.
Quali was a mess, there were problems with the car and although Checo was ready to go home and call it a night, you weren't letting him leave until you figured out a solid game plan for tomorrow.
The laptop opened on the little table, you sat on the floor next to the couch as the driver yawned from behind you. "Are we almost done?" He asked, a finger dragging up your arm.
You swatted his hand away, "we need to go over this once more, I don't need you yelling at me over the radio tomorrow." You glanced at him, there's a smile on his face and look you've never seen before.
"What, you weirdo ?" Your brows furrowed and he shook his head.
You two were conformable together; you had worked with him since he was at Force India and moved with him to Redbull when he made the switch.
Not the mention the fact that race weekends had a lot of tension and you two turned to each other to get rid of said tension.
"I can feel you staring, Sergio."
"Oh first name," he mumbles, moving closer to you. "I'm so scared," he joked, you turned to look at him.
His hand cups your jaw, you shook your head. "We have to finish this."
"Uh huh, strategies and races and blah blah blah. I really want to have sex with you right now." he mumbles, leaning down to kiss you. You can't help yourself, shifting onto your knees to kiss him back.
He pulls you back up to the couch, moving you to sit on his lap. The hands are all over the place, you’re both impatient, wanting more than you can get too at the moment.
Checo scoots you back on his lap, undoing his pants as you unbutton his shirt, pushing it over his broad shoulders only to get stuck behind him between himself and the chair. Your skirt bunched up on your hips, panties pulled to the side as you sink down onto his cock.
His hand on your hip guiding you, letting you bounce on his lap, his name falling from your lips.
He bucks his hips and your nails drop down from his shoulders to the scratches along his back. He lets out a groan, his face buried in the crook of your neck.
“So good,” you mumble against his cheek, rocking your hips back and forth. Checo's hands squeeze at your hips, fingers digging in hard enough to leave behind fingerprints.
“Mmm there,” you breathe, chest pressed to his.

which dynasty would you choose to be involved in the foundation of? for clarity you would be making contributions on the side of the new dynasty, no watching from the sidelines or joining a rump state, and also little one-off dynasties like xin, shun, and wu zhou are absolutely fair game
tang all the way baybe! it's got everything you could possibly ask for: second official golden age of china founded through a bloody rebellion with plenty of succession drama where one son had to preemptively assassinate his brothers under murky circumstances. princess pingyang raising an army to help her dad win a war and becoming china's first female general (buried with full military honors). you got the economic golden age. the artistic golden age. the social golden age. grape wine from europe. people decided it was neat to sit in chairs and finally, finally, finally stopped fucking eating elemental mercury. women had an unprecedented (sadly never to be repeated) amount of equality and freedom, they could go outside, ride horses, cross dress, ride horses outside while crossdressing. fat was in fashion. tricolour contrapposto drip ceramics. xuanzhang snuck off to india to pick up his buddhist library books and someone wrote a popular furry fanfic about it. 2/2 GOATS of Chinese Poetry li bai and du fu were failing their imperial exams hand in extremely drunken hand. we had womens rights. womens wrongs. the girlbosses yang guifei, an lushan and shi siming. it was the best of times. the worst of times. a time of wisdom and everlasting sorrow.
so hell yeah i want a part in building all this! catch me in the annals of history bankrupting my family to the 3rd degree to give all my worldly possessions to princess pingyang. if i keep myself healthy i'd be able to live long enough to be personally lingchi'd by wu zetian *heart eyes emoji.*
second choice is to go back to the three kingdom period and join team Wu as a government official and work in the agriculture department. yeah you read that correctly, idgaf if Dong Wu is the forgotten middle child of the san guo era. maybe i don't want everlasting glory and the chance to drop dead at age 50 from a stress-related stroke. maybe it's enough to get steady job, consistent pay, reasonable hours, and a chance to be in the peanut gallery while Liu Bei and Cao Cao bite each other's dicks off.

Dark Blue Moon and the Suffering Sun Chapter 32
MASTAPOST
Samson S. Skulker. Wealthy real estate owner, noted trophy hunter. Been on safaris in Botswana, Indonesia, India, and other countries taking big game. Guy hunted just about everything. Elephants, rhinos, tigers, elk, only to come to Elmerton Bay, just an hour away by boat from Amity Island.
It didn’t take two brain cells to figure out why. The better question was why Phantom tried to point webbed fingers at him as to the whereabouts of Danny Fenton, a move that was transparently (goddammit Dick and your puns) a lie, according to Bruce. Tim Drake slipped into the man’s more private records without even trying.
Of course, getting the data out and parsing what it meant were two very different things. But he wasn’t trained by Batman for nothing. Skulker did make cursory attempts at hiding his electronic paper trail, but cursory was absolutely not enough to keep 13-year-old Tim out, let alone his current self.
Firstly, the man absolutely hunted more exotic, more illegal creatures. That much was clear. Borrowing some of Barbara’s programmes, Tim found the man travelling to much more remote countries. His little vacations coincided with missing persons reports around the same time.
Missing metas, to be exact. Each person with a power set dangerous to themselves and others. Each person having disappeared without a trace and then never to be found again. The picture Tim was building was getting grimmer.
Secondly, the man was buying parts. Robotics parts, to be exact. Engines, weapons systems, hydraulics. Many of them sourced from Vladco, the company founded by Vlad Masters, an old college friend of Jack and Maddie Fenton, who were the parents to the missing teenager of Tim’s current case.
But Danny Fenton did not have the meta-gene, a fact Tim confirmed after yet another concerning breach of privacy. He filed that detail away for later investigating.
Tim pressed a key, letting his programmes run while he got a coffee. Oh sweet delicious coffee. He had once distilled almost pure caffeine into a syrup. It was the most horrible thing he’d tasted in his life, but the buzz kept him up all night, that was until his heart started giving out. That was less enjoyable.
What was also less enjoyable was the revving motorcycle heading into the Batcave. Two motorcycles, in fact. Just as Tim’s afternoon was looking to be peaceful and quiet.
“Don’t fucking give me that, Dickwing!” Jason called out.
“I’m fine, Jay, maybe you need to stop hovering over me like some mama bear.” Dick put down his helmet with maybe a little too much force.
Jason hopped off his own bike. “That’s bullshit and even Timbit knows it.”
Tim shrunk into the Batcomputer’s chair. He so did not want to be a part of this. He just waited for his older brothers to carry their argument out of earshot, like they had been doing regularly now. The men traded strong words with every footstep across the cave.
“Maybe I’m just a little high strung. It’s honestly nothing.”
“You literally cannot fucking say that when I saw you going full-ass Punisher five minutes ago. Like the traffickers yesterday were one thing. Those guys suck. This dude was literally just a mugger. Are you going out of your fucking mind?”
“Jason, I thought you were supposed to be the one who’s all for going full Punisher style?”
Jason groaned loudly, and then transitioned into a frustrated scream. “Do you even hear yourself?!”
The changing room door slammed shut.
That was the second argument in the last two days. If you told Tim that Mr Heads-in-a-Duffle would be lecturing the Golden Child over excessive force, he’d start working on a machine to send you back to the topsy-turvy alternate dimension you’d come from, but apparently his dimension was the topsy-turvy one the whole time. And he hated it.
Turns out Dick inherited more from Bruce than he liked to admit, including his awful coping mechanisms. And to be honest, he was way too tired to even begin to breach this subject.
He should be happy that his literal attempted murderer was going to be out of his hair for a good while, maybe even forever. But even entertaining the thought made him sick enough to avoid the topic in his head for hours, only to think about it again, and get himself sick again.
So back to Skulker it was. Joy.
It turned out his new friend Skulker had made himself a fucking Iron Man rip-off suit, capable of flight, diving, and packed to the gills with fuck-you bazookas, machine guns, and hydroplasm weapons. Hydroplasm guns that he’d sourced from the Fentons themselves, through a long and complicated chain of buyoffs.
And happy day, the man was kind enough to install cameras and microphones, and kept logs from both.
In a surprising twist, it was fiendishly difficult to hack into those logs. Tim was honestly beginning to sweat. He suspected Skulker’s friends at Vladco (namely Vlad Masters, the sleezeball. Tim never liked him at galas and this only cemented his low opinion) had some secrets that they didn’t want out.
No matter, it was only a matter of time. Tim continued typing.
And typing.
And typing.
What the hell was this firewall?! Tim pinched his arm just to make sure this wasn’t a sleep-deprivation hallucination. He could’ve sworn he’d gotten through that layer of security. It was like it was shifting itself to cover up his progress and force him to start over. Almost like it was alive.
Against the thunderous backdrop of his brothers’ clashing voices, Tim set himself on overdrive. If he could just act faster than it could correct itself, then maybe, maybe.
A plain error message informed him of the results long after he’d already seen them. Tim kicked the table for good measure. The only thing he could extract was two frames of video footage. They showed, respectively, a T-shirt and pair of sneakers that matched what one of the missing metas was wearing when they were last seen.
Was it damning evidence? Absolutely. But it also proved to him absolutely nothing that he wasn’t already suspecting, nothing that could point him in a new direction. Still, it made his stomach churn. He hoped those people would get a better second chance beyond the grave.
Maybe the fact that the data was this well-hidden at all proved something.
The locker room door swung open, his brothers in civvies and glaring at each other, trying to appear civil in front of (right behind) Tim, even though they’d literally just been shouting at each other ten minutes ago.
“Timmy!” Dick called out. “How long have you been awake?”
Tim gestured offhanded to his pile of only two used mugs. “Not long enough. I’m still working. Can you take it upstairs please?”
Jason huffed, and stalked off upstairs without a word, probably too disgusted to be in his and Dick’s presence much longer.
Dick clasped his hands. “It’s fine, Tim. Honestly. Jason and I are just having a little, err, disagreement, is all.”
“Hm.” Tim inputted another set of commands. He was starting to see why Bruce liked to say that now. Avoiding painful emotions felt so good. Dick made a pained noise.
“Well, ok. I’m just gonna head back to Bludhaven now. Say hi to Alfred for me! And contact me if you need anything!” And then he sped off.
Tim shook off the awkwardness like old clothes. Thank goodness for some peace and quiet again. Maybe that was why he was working so hard to help Bruce get the demon child back, so he could return to the status quo, and not this. This hell reality where Dick was as emotionally constipated as Bruce and Jason was the one acting as the voice of reason.
The first night when Bruce called home, the entire family was in an uproar. Dick got a pale look on his face, and was halfway about to take the Batplane and go searching for Damian himself, only for Bruce to remind him that they were all still needed in Gotham and Bludhaven, and whatever few leads there were, Bruce would pursue. It was effortlessly logical, but it was clear Dick hated it. He stormed off in a rage that Tim had only seen when Ethiopia was fresh, when he and Bruce were at their lowest.
And Jason? He got this look on his face that he’d never, ever seen before. Tim had laid awake one night just contemplating it for ages.
Actually, no. He had seen it once before. It was Tim caught Jason looking into what Bruce was doing in the months after Ethiopia. Tim had subtly hacked the phone camera, and the look Jason had then was the same as how he looked when Damian was declared missing.
Tim shook his head. It was a gruesome image, what Bruce had sent them. Damian’s clothes ripped to shreds. The ground stained with his blood. No body in sight.
A little brother who may or may not be dead, something he may or may not be glad or sick to his stomach about. Brothers who were acting like completely different people, and a monster of a man who had to be connected somehow.
A ping appeared in the corner of the screen. The government siren hunting branch appearing in Panama?
Sam Manson sat up in her bed, her body finding some way to release the dread and tension. She looked on at her phone in horror and macabre fascination in equal parts.
This had Danny written all over it. She didn’t even need to hear the anchor confirming it to know.
On the one hand, she really wanted to applaud him for fucking them up this bad. The comment section was ripping into the GiW for their actions in Panama, treating the country like it was some vassal state they could romp around in. She personally screenshotted the fucking beautiful mass car crash the GiW had gotten into trying to catch him, and saved it into her favourites folder.
On the other hand, she really wanted to slap him for fucking up this bad. This could’ve easily gone wrong. Danny what were you thinking?! They could’ve got him that time!
And finally, she wanted to yell in frustration, because they had a radio communicator there. Goddammit! If only Tucker had known, they he could’ve hacked in and they could’ve talked to their best friend and actually got an update on what the fuck was going on.
And finally, finally for real, she was so glad, because the GiW would’ve announced it on every news channel if they’d actually managed to catch him. Thank fucking goodness.
Ugh, this headache. She really needed to lie down again.
Knock, knock knock knock knock, knock knock.
Dread pooled in her stomach. “Come in,” she said, resigned to her fate.
Grandma Ida, the person she least wanted to see right now, opened the door. She was the kind of woman who never carried herself very seriously, except for in matters of sorcery, and especially when warning Sam on the dangers of her craft. Dangers that Sam had ignored in order to go all out. Now she marched into Sam’s bedroom like an executioner.
Grandma stood at the foot of Sam’s bed, scanning her closely. “I knew I smelled tinged blood.” She went up to the side, and palmed Sam’s forehead. Her hand was freezing cold to the touch. “You should’ve called me immediately.”
Sam averted her eyes. She should’ve, but she didn’t.
Her parents never failed to get a rise out of her; she rejected their notions of female beauty and social etiquette in every way, their attempts to hook her up with Tim Drake-Wayne, then Damian Wayne, and she hadn’t cowed to them or submitted since she was ten. But with Grandma’s withering disapproval, she couldn’t feel more like a child if she tried.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered.
“I warned you many times of the risks, Sammy. You’re lucky to be here, and not in the hospital or worse.”
“I know.”
Sam moved to lie on her side, facing away from Granny. Granny had questioned her decision to fight alongside Danny, but allowed it under the condition that she did so safely, and turning your body into a popping water balloon, but with blood, was so not the definition of safe.
And Danny’s fate was still in question regardless. He wasn’t able to cross Panama, and who knows what Damian was doing. What if it was all for naught?
A hand was put on her shoulder. “Did you accomplish what you were set out to do?”
Sam nodded. “Yeah.”
“And was it worth it?” Yes. Absolutely yes. Danny bled every day for this god-forsaken town of ingrates. He’d bled for her mistake six months ago.
Granny seemed to understand her feelings. She nodded, and ruffled Sam’s hair, and the tension in Sam’s body drained away.
“Then I trust your judgement. Can you sit up? I’ve brought some more medicine for you.”
Sam pushed herself against the bunched-up pillows at the headboard. Her head spun from the motion, but she was never one to let her body’s limits confine her. “Thank you, Bubbe. I love you.”
Granny passed her a brew of herbal medicine, dozens of dried spices and mushrooms brewed together into a blackened sludge that felt like knives into your tongue, but which never failed to get her feeling better. It was a leg up from what big pharma tried to pedal for ten-fold the price.
Sam lifted up the mug to her face. And, oh yeah. Nothing like bitter liquid pain to help with a migraine. She let the hot tea flow over her taste buds, pathing them in cinnamon, star anise and a million other things.
She finished her tea in one satisfying gulp, running her tongue over her teeth and scratching out the lingering aftertaste. As she put the mug down, it revealed Grandma’s face hovering right in front of her. Sam yelped in shock. “Bubbe! You gave me a heart attack!”
Bubbe smiled devilishly. “So what did you do?”
Sam’s mouth gaped open. Leave it to her Grandma to almost kill her from emotional whiplash.
“Now come on, this is a monumental moment for a budding young sorceress like yourself. Why, when I was twenty-two, I used to run with some heroic types myself. We had all sorts of hijinks together.” Bubbe cackled and clasped her hands, eyes going wispy. “My friends got a heart attack when I pulled off my own hare-brained scheme to topple the evil overlord of the week’s central command. Hah!”
“What?! Then Sam coughed, and lowered her volume. “What do you mean ‘heroic types.’ You just told me you went to some stuffy academy and eloped.”
Bubbe shrugged. “I did do that. Must have forgotten the extra stuff.”
Sam blinked.
She moved to sit beside Sam on the bed. “We got up to a lot of fun back in the day, and a lot of pain too. I did what I did to protect those I cared for. Did you, bubbeleh?”
She held Sam’s hand with a look that reminded her just how many years Grandma had lived, and how many adventures or stories she had yet to tell, how much heartache she’d had to endure to become the woman she was now. “I projected an illusion all the way off the coast of Panama. It hurt like nothing else in my entire life, but…” She paused. “We got Phantom out. He’s safe now, I think.”
Grandma Ida nodded solemnly, the kind of understanding that Sam craved from her parents every waking moment of her teenage career.
“I don’t want this to be a regular occurrence, ok?”
“Yes, I promise. This was an extreme circumstance.”
“Good. Now, are you well enough for some meditation? It would do well to keep your soul energy flowing.”
Ok, but you have to tell me what you got up to back in the day.”
Granny chuckled, and agreed to it. Sam kicked off her covers, letting her legs get some fresh air. She was probably pushing it, but she needed to recover as quickly as possible. Who knew when she would be needed again?
Maddie Fenton kneeled in the sand. Her hands clamped down on her gun. Her knees shook. Tears prickled in her goggles.
Her baby was right there. He was so close. So fucking close. She could almost touch him, even now.
And he ran away from her. And at first her heart shattered into a million pieces, just like it had when he’d come home after his first disappearance and flinched when she hugged him.
Then she realised. He was protecting her. Some metal menace was shooting at her defenseless son like it was some kind of sick game. The monster of a man had laid fucking landmines on a public beach.
It should’ve been her protecting him.
Bruce Wayne returned to her side, empty handed. They’d scoured this entire beach. Danny couldn’t have gone far, she had thought, only for their search to turn up with nothing.
That left only one option. That her enemy doubled back after fleeing, and snatched Danny up without either her or Bruce noticing. Maddie’s heart sank. She should’ve aimed for the head.
A name pinged in her mind. Phantom had whispered it to her. Skulker.
With nary but nod, she and Bruce mounted their jet skis again.
