It's been like 3 days since Veilguard's release date announcement and there's already so much bad-faith 'criticism,' concern trolling, nitpicking and general shithead behaviour out there.

There's obviously the outrage tourists who never actually planned on playing the game just talking shit, but the amount of supposed 'fans' I've seen actively wishing for failure is ridiculous.

Probably Origins stans who never moved on, y'know the type that thinks tedious crpg jank was the peak of game design and copious amounts of rape and calling women cunts is the pinnacle of 'dark fantasy' writing.

Somebody should remind gamers that it's okay to actually enjoy games.

on a less serious side, bad and foolish having witnesses who are somewhat normal and regular to their usual strange and deranged antics is so hysterical. bad playing the role of kidnapped and felon this time around, letting himself get captured, pretending to be soooo guilty and talking like he’s actually gonna snitch. foolish doing it half for fun, half for show, because he knows cellbit is the killer already - he just needs nails for bad’s coffin because he’s gonna be the scapegoat, and he’s bored. if they were alone maybe they’d trade more intel - they’re on the same page but can’t exactly confirm nor allude to that with an audience, so it just devolves into their usual antics. meanwhile bagi is sweating and convinced bad is definitely about to spill everything she’s told him, falling for bad’s little ‘oh I’m so easily caught and convinced’ act harder than anyone else, trying to avoid bad’s arrest or worse, cellbit’s - while really what’s going on is bad and foolish’s homoerotic batshit insane cop and robber routine, where you’re not sure if someone’s getting arrested or if they’re about to make out. and aypierre is just there

I wanna interject a little as a big old nerd (read, autistic gamer lol).. He is sort of right, but not in the right way. You're also sort of right. AAA game companies do absolutely like to make their games as bloated as possible intentionally, CoD is a very famous example of that, other scummy companies that shill out for consoles do too, this is a known issue and has been for years.

If you only have 500GB, and the game is 100GB, then well I guess you gotta uninstall some of your smaller games to make space. Now you're only able to play the giant game because no way you're gonna uninstall it and wait all that time to install it again. You're keeping it, and game companies love when you don't have other options to play. It makes "dependable consumers."

Compression is not always lossy, choosing what and how to compress things is.. complex. There is a balance between load times and file size, striking a middle ground is hard. But games stacking on DLC after DLC that bloats the game, filling it with lots of music especially that is unnecessarily uncompressed in order to take up space while claiming it's for performance, or unnecessarily high res models where they just don't need to be. That random leaf on a random houseplant does not need 1500 polygons and a custom shader, they do it intentionally to take up space. Both are correct. Games need the space to be higher quality. Games need to be less compressed into to have faster load times. But games being disgustingly bloated is also a design feature, and a known problem that's existed for a long ass time.

Like here's an example of when Titanfall came out, a 48GB game and 35GB of it was uncompressed music. That's utterly ridiculous. And still, that excuse of "but muh load timez" was made by the creators. There is not reason for something like that. It's intentional. They can't even defend themselves when pressed:

"He did, however, admit that most PC gamers probably wouldn’t even notice the difference. “On a higher PC it wouldn’t be an issue. On a medium or moderate PC, it wouldn’t be an issue, it’s that on a two-core [machine] with where our min spec is, we couldn’t dedicate those resources to audio.”"

As systems get better, that's a reason to start enabling compression more, as you don't need to compensate as much for load times, not less. Content-depending of course, some games are currently taxing the upper limits of what consoles and even higher-end PC setups can handle, but generally speaking, it's not something devs need to rely on as much. We don't need tricks to try and fit an entire game on a disc anymore. The kinds of stuff they did to make PS2 games was fucking ART. Gone are those days, and higher ups love that people.. don't really know that.

Anyway the thing he was mad at me about earlier, which I didn’t mention on main. was that he was complaining about the size of games.

He has a 500G hard drive on his brand new PS5, and 4 games that are all around 100G each.

That is annoying.

Anyway he was saying that’s because game developers are lazy and not trying to compress game data anymore because they don’t have to.

And I was like “….. that’s not laziness that’s code and art and music that is larger BECAUSE IT CAN BE, because the systems can DO it, now….. which is MORE work to create more content, which is the opposite of laziness…… and you can’t compress that data without either losing quality or increasing load times because it’s constantly having to be unpacked, or both, Uncompressed data loads faster.”

He didn’t want to hear that and insists that he’s right. He decided I’m biased because I talk directly to a handful of people that develop games for a living and trust their words on it more than I trust his research.

He cited Son “compressing” his sheet music files on his iPad as an example and I said “No, Son isn’t compressing anything, he’s removing parts of the data and lowering the quality of his own work in the process because he’s omitting notes, ties, volume markers…..”

But he didn’t want to hear “You’ve chosen a bad example for the idea you’re trying to get across, which I understand but do not at all agree with.”

This all was during an 8 hour block of Genshin Impact. Yeah it works faster on the PS5. Same old Genshin Impact, though.

Everyone cheering about 'lol other game devs are shaking in their boots cuz they're jealous of Larian' are, I think, entirely missing the point.

Like step back for a second and ask yourself why devs at other companies might be wary of Gamers (TM) treating this huge, complex game based on a beloved franchise that promises unprecedented agency and consequences as a new baseline.

Like, perhaps they are concerned that the already standardized-shitty working conditions and outrageous demands of publishers could be made worse if upper management get it into their brains to demand "why can't you just make it like BG3" while providing a fraction of the resources and time.

Not to mention the rather notorious way that Gamers (TM) tend to harass and threaten game devs when they don't get what they believe they are entitled to in a game.

You'd think the devs discussing the working conditions and material conditions that make BG3's development exceptional would get more understanding & sympathy from folks on this site when those devs talk about how their own working conditions wouldn't facilitate such a development cycle.
