~Galleryyuhself~ Journalist and television personality Dominic Kalipersad has done a lovely piece on my dear friend Paul Attong. Do take a read.........
Trinidad-born Paul Antonio Attong is one of the few people who can boast of being a Scribe to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.He is a calligrapher, gilder, and heraldic artist with over 25 years’ experience and regularly teaches internationally.
Paul Antonio, as he is known professionally, is also one of the four Crown Office Scribes for England, still writing some of the laws of the country on vellum and parchment for the Queen of England to sign. His work has graced the letters,  invitations, and envelopes of some of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses for fashion shows and their top clients. In addition, having mastered the art of Ancient Writing Systems, he invented his own:
The 4Fold Symmetry, an innovative system which makes the learning of Copperplate Script a simpler acquisition. He is also the author of Copperplate Script – A Yin & Yang Approach.Antonio’s fascination with lettering began since childhood tracing Old English fonts with his brother. He was first drawn to botanical illustrations and maps, where he first discovered the art of calligraphy. He began writing with whatever equipment available on the island, even seeking out vulture feathers to make his own quills.
He went to Britain in 1998, studied letterform history, then calligraphy, manuscript illumination, and heraldic painting.Eventually, Antonio opened a studio in Clapham, south London, working for private and business clients. He has even given occasional lectures at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. In 2001, he went to Egypt for the Metropolitan Museumof Art, NYC, to copy ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs in and around a pyramid.Considered a modern-day scribe,
Antonio’s work includes memorial pages, cyphers, certificates, dedications, favourite poems, logos, documents for film and television, and illuminations. His stock in trade has turned out to be invitations – for weddings, dinners, corporate events. Now one of 50 full-time professional scribes currently working in Britain,
Antonio takes time to introduce others to the art of calligraphy and recently collaborated with Rhodia (quality paper manufacturer) on the creation of the PAScribe calligraphy pads.
He publishes tutorials on YouTube and also offers workshops and courses via his website www.paulantonioscribe.com .
