Equipped with electronic ears, eyes and brains, a sea of devices now monitor human activity and characteristics. The list includes everything from smart speakers, laptops and phones, to even doorbells and locks. You may not have noticed this trend, but it's real, and growing.

CNET has spent the last two weeks documenting the current state of facial recognition technology, but that's just one method of gathering data directly from your person. Here are a few examples of how other biometric technologies have seeped into the fabric of daily life, and where things could go next.

Fingerprint readers everywhere

Devices that can read, capture and match fingerprints to specific individuals have been with us for decades. In 1969, the FBI began looking at ways computers could help facilitate fingerprint identification.

Back then the idea was to free as many FBI staff members as possible from this tedious, labor-intensive task. By 1975 the Bureau's efforts, aided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, led to a functional fingerprint scanner prototypebased on capacitive sensors.

Now fast forward to 2013. That's when biometrics truly became mainstream, designed for consumer convenience, not only serious crime fighting. That year Apple integrated its Touch ID fingerprint reader into the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and 5S. It also placed the security system in its new iPad models.

Since then both Google and Microsoft have launched similar identification solutions. Examples include Pixel Imprint for Google's Pixel phones, and Windows Hello available on Microsoft Surface laptops and tablets. Other device makers have adopted fingerprint reader technology as well. On this list of high-end handsets are the Motorola G7, OnePlus 6T, Samsung Galaxy S10, and Sony's Xperia XZ3.

All these phones, save the OnePlus 6T and Galaxy S10, use capacitive readers. They harness the same principle that the FBI did to build its early fingerprint scanner. Capacitors in the scanner measure fingertips for slight differences in electrical conductivity. The scanner then forms a finger ridge pattern from these differences.

The OnePlus 6T is quite different. Its sensor is optical, essentially a tiny camera that takes photos of fingertips. Since it creates flat, 2D images, this reader is relatively easy to fool. Not so with the Galaxy S10's ultrasonic sensor.

The S10 actively pings your finger with sound waves when it's touched, These waves bounce off skin and back to the reader for analysis. With that data, it constructs a detailed 3D image that's tougher to duplicate or spoof.

They know your voice

The smart speaker's rise in popularity is undeniable. The number of US smart speaker users is expected to swell to 76.5 million by 2020. According to eMarketer, that's up from 16 million in 2016, a compounded annual growth rate of 47.9%.

Amazon's Echo products with Alexa onboard still represent the lion's share of these gadgets. Google Assistant though is in hot pursuit. And as the companies compete for market share, the capabilities of both voice assistants has steadily increased.

In 2017, Qualcomm entered a license agreement with iris-based authentication company Eyelock. That could be a sign this access control method will soon find a home on Qualcomm mobile processors and platforms.

Two hearts don't beat as one

Basic heart rate monitors have been a standard feature of fitness trackers and smartwatches for years. A few new devices such as the Apple Watch 4, take things a step further. Potential applications include controlling entry to sensitive office and laboratory facilities, along with tools, equipment and digital accounts. Que el MWC no se celebre es importante: las presentaciones que demuestran que no era un evento descafeinado

La trágica noticia de mediados de semana ya ha reposado, todos somos conscientes de que, pese a lo inverosímil que hubiera resultado hace un mes, el Mobile World Congress de Barcelona 2020 ha sido cancelado. No se celebrará de nuevo hasta el año que viene y deja en el aire una notable cantidad de incógnitas, desde cómo asumirán los organizadores las incontables pérdidas que arrastrará la cancelación a cómo harán frente los próximos eventos a la onda expansiva que ha generado el coronavirus Covid-19.

Durante la escalada de ausencias a la que asistimos los días previos a la cancelación del MWC 2020 fueron muchos los rumores que rodearon las decisiones de las empresas. LG fue la que abrió la veda con un anuncio por sorpresa que produjo un efecto 'bola de nieve'. El goteo de comunicados terminó en varias bajas diarias, algunas tan importantes como Ericsson, Nokia, Intel, Vodafone o Deutsche Telekom; hasta que la GSMA no tuvo más remedio que claudicar. Detrás de la decisión, tal y como declaró John Hoffman, presidente de la empresa que organiza el congreso, se encontraba la "preocupación global con respecto al brote de coronavirus, preocupación por los viajes y otras circunstancias".

En la declaración oficial con motivo de la cancelación del congreso la GSMA deja en el aire multitud de cuestiones, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a esas "otras circunstancias" que llevaron a la organización a echar el cierre anticipado. Y, pese que pueda existir cierta creencia de que en el Mobile World Congress ya no se celebran presentaciones sonadas de producto, la realidad lo niega. Basta con analizar los últimos años.

Las grandes marcas se aprovechan del MWC

Resulta difícil hacerse una idea del volumen de personas que transita por los pabellones de la Fira de Barcelona si no se ha asistido alguna vez al evento: caminar por sus pasillos puede ser tan difícil como llegar a primera fila de un concierto abarrotado partiendo desde la otra punta. En el MWC siempre hay gente. Mucha. Sobre todo los dos primeros días del congreso. Con esto en mente, y debido a la posibilidad de contagio masivo con el que amenazaba el coronavirus, resulta lógico que la preocupación existiera. Ahora bien, no es tan lógico que las empresas que cancelaran tuvieran otros motivos aparte de los sanitarios.

La organización del MWC alega "fuerza mayor" por la cancelación para tratar de evitar indemnizaciones

Al MWC no solo se viene a presentar los nuevos productos y a afianzar el catálogo de los ya asistentes: como ocurre en todo congreso, lo importante de verdad es la enorme cantidad de contactos que se generan. Entre las empresas y otras empresas, empresas y clientes, entre los periodistas y las empresas e, incluso, entre los propios periodistas: no hay otro lugar del mundo que facilite el conocimiento tecnológico a tal magnitud. Lo sé bien ya que llevo asistiendo más de diez años al Mobile World Congress de Barcelona.

Aunque lo más sonado del MWC sean las noticias en torno a nuevos productos, lo más importante para todos los involucrados es establecer contactos

Pese a que marcas como LG o Amazon no tuvieran aparente interés en asistir al MWC (la primera porque no parecía planear la renovación de sus teléfonos y la segunda porque no está directamente relacionada con los móviles), eso no implica que anunciar su ausencia fuera motivo de publicidad, tal y como se llegó a decir los días antes de la cancelación. Es cierto que el volumen de presentaciones en el MWC ha ido decreciendo con el paso de los años, pero eso no ha hecho mella ni en los asistentes ni en el número de empresas participantes. Todo lo contrario, el crecimiento del congreso ha sido constante y elevado, tanto en afluencia de público como de marcas.

Tomando como fuente a Statista, una firma de analítica especialista en el procesado de datos, podemos observar el enorme crecimiento del MWC a lo largo de los años. Por ejemplo, el ascenso en el número de asistentes.

A la gráfica le faltan los datos de los años posteriores a 2016. Según los datos provistos por la propia GSMA, serían los siguientes:

2017: 108.000 asistentes.

2018: 107.000 asistentes.

2019: 109.000 asistentes.

Por poner en perspectiva, la GSMA esperaba reunir en el Mobile World Congress de 2020 más de 110.000 asistentes. Este enorme agujero en la afluencia que ha provocado la cancelación afectará de forma grave a la economía. Podemos observar la progresión del aporte económico del certamen a la ciudad de Barcelona gracias a Statista.

Pero ¿todo lo anterior repercutió en el interés de las empresas por asistir al mayor congreso de móviles del mundo? Echemos un vistazo a la evolución del número de empresas expositoras en el MWC (vía Statista).

Como podemos apreciar, y pese a que se exista la creencia de que el volumen de presentaciones ha ido decreciendo, junto con el interés de las marcas en el MWC, lo cierto es que ha resultado ser lo contrario: Barcelona ha ganado un enorme poder de convocatoria. Y solo hay que bucear en los últimos años para descubrir la gran cantidad de productos desvelada durante los días del MWC en Barcelona, también durante las jornadas previas al inicio de la feria. Nokia 9, 3, 5, nuevo Nokia 3310, Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6, Huawei P10, Mate X, LG G8, G7, G6, Sony Xperia 1, Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Compact...

La lista de móviles reconocibles y de marcas importantes sería eterna, señal de que a los fabricantes les importa, y mucho, el Mobile World Congress. No en vano, todos los medios tecnológicos acudimos a Barcelona durante esos días; por lo que les resulta sencillo captar nuestra atención y enseñarnos en persona todo su catálogo. Sí, sobresalir es complicado dada la exagerada competencia, pero no hay un altavoz igual para presentar los últimos productos. Y esto es especialmente notorio en el caso de las marcas pequeñas.

Para las marcas pequeñas el MWC es su única opción

EL, una marca minoritaria de móviles que aprovechaba el MWC para darse a conocer

El Mobile World Congress llena los ocho pabellones de la Fira Gran Vía, sus 240.000 metros cuadrados disponibles(y hasta 400.000 cuadrados con ferias paralelas, como el 4YFN, también cancelado por el coconavirus). Estos pabellones están conectados por pasillos mientras poseen zonas abiertas entre ellos; que también aprovechan las empresas para exponer sus productos y ofrecer recintos cerrados para reuniones. De entre toda la extensión disponible hay una zona principal que aglutina la exposición de los fabricantes principales, los Hall 4 y 5. Tradicionalmente ocupados por Samsung, Huawei, ZTE, Qualcomm, Intel, Nokia, Motorola, LG y una larga retahíla de marcas reconocidas, es también la zona que acapara más miradas y actualidad. No obstante, es una porción minúscula del congreso.

La cancelación del MWC para las pequeñas empresas: "El dinero pagado es lo de menos, lo peor es la oportunidad perdida"

Quizá las marcas grandes no necesiten en gran medida la publicidad que ofrece el MWC ya que suelen tener sus propios eventos (por más que sí utilicen el altavoz mediático), pero no ocurre lo mismo con las empresas más pequeñas: estas aprovechan el congreso para anunciar sus nuevos productos y ofrecer la oportunidad de que todos los asistentes los prueben. También hacen uso de la cobertura mediática para generar conocimiento de marca en el mercado occidental, así pudimos conocer los productos de Vivo antes de que la marca adquiriese popularidad fuera de China; igual que otros fabricantes menores de aquel país, como Gionee o Meizu en su momento. Y si nos fijamos en otras marcas aún menores, el número de fabricantes de móviles sería casi incontable, igual que las empresas de accesorios o de redes.

La cancelación del MWC supone una enorme pérdida para las empresas de mediano y pequeño tamaño, y no solo por perder la opción de comunicar sus productos: carecer de un entorno apropiado para establecer contactos con clientes y proveedores es su mayor frustración. Tal y como relata Javier Lacort en Xataka, y después de consultar diversas empresas que habían planeado su asistencia al WMC 2020 de Barcelona, todas relatan que las pérdidas (por lo general más de 4.000 euros invertidos en el stand, viajes y material de marketing) son lo de menos: lo más importante es el retorno que les aportaba la presencia en un congreso mundial.

Vivo planeaba la presentación del Apex 5G en el MWC: la empresa había colocado anuncios en el aeropuerto de Barcelona

Una de las últimas dudas que nos quedaban está disipándose: las marcas que iban a utilizar el MWC para presentar novedades, incluso fuera del congreso, han cancelado sus eventos en Barcelona. Sony hará un lanzamiento por streaming, igual que Realme. OPPO iba a presentar los Find X2, pero ha pospuesto el evento a alguna fecha de marzo. Xiaomi pensaba lanzar los Xiaomi Mi 10 de manera internacional, igual que Honor con su Honor View 30; intenciones que ambas empresas han cancelado. También está cancelada la presentación de los nuevos móviles de HMD Global (Nokia) y los de Wiko, dos marcas que pensaban utilizar el marco del MWC para popularizar su catálogo. Y hay otra víctima directa: Samsung. Pese a que dio a conocer sus nuevos productos el 11 de febrero, la marca pensaba aprovechar su enorme stand en el congreso para ofrecer a asistentes y periodistas una toma de contacto anticipada con los Samsung Galaxy S20 y Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.
