Ok so my "Big Idea" post from earlier last week
I've written one of those classic Star Wars scrawl title things and some character details for those interested in this TFA AU!! I'm going to be calling it the "galaxy's force" AU from now on so it'll be easier to find :)
Title Scrawl:
Trouble in the galaxy! The vile FIRST ORDER has made its move against the NEW GALACTIC REPUBLIC. Supreme Leader SNOKE has sent some of his personal militia with teams of troopers to invade planets with low defenses. The most notably successful of these invasions was led by his very own Force user, known by most only as THE KNIGHT!
In response to these attacks, Senator LEIA ORGANA and her partner, HAN SOLO, built up a RESISTANCE army. Many citizens of the New Republic are against the First Order, but will they be enough to stop Snoke and The Knight?
Meanwhile, a mysterious figure calling themselves a JEDI has appeared on Jakku. Senator Organa sends a small fighter to investigate these claims!
Character Details:
SUPREME LEADER SNOKE: Leader of the First Order. Horrifically scarred and disfigured, seems to have appeared from nowhere a mere 5 years after the Fall of the Empire. Age undetermined. Appears to be somewhere between 65-80 standard years.
THE KNIGHT: Snoke’s only Force user. Wears an impressive suit of armor and carries an unstable red lightsaber with a crossguard. Armor seems to be made of imitation beskar. Age determined to be between 19-25 standard years. Identity unknown.
SENATOR LEIA ORGANA: One of the founders of the New Galactic Republic. She maintains the honorary status of “senator” due to her services, but no longer participates in the Senate after the end of her term. Carries her lightsaber – blue – everywhere, despite never using it. Lives on Naboo. Age 58 standard years.
HAN SOLO: Husband of Senator Organa. Has a business in shipping, mainly partnered with Bespin and those nearby. Is almost never on-planet, but loves to spend time with his wife when he is on Naboo. Always on the lookout for someone important. Age 65 standard years.
REY SKYWALKER: Padawan learner of Luke Skywalker. Regarded as his daughter, if not by blood. Basically adopted her after her parents tried to save her from some sort of family curse. Has a blue lightsaber. Unclear if it belongs to her. Age determined to be between 14-17 standard years.
LUKE SKYWALKER: The last Jedi Master. Vanished off the face of the galaxy after the disaster that killed half his students, sent a quarter missing, and took the other quarter with him. Has a green lightsaber. Age 58 standard years.
POE DAMERON: Pilot for the Resistance. Well-regarded by cohorts, and jokingly called the “Senator’s son” due to his high esteem. Quietly, of course, as everyone knows. Son of an ex-First Order loyalist who saved him from being forced into spice running on Kajimi. Age 21 standard years.
FN-2187: Stormtrooper in the First Order. Captain of a squad of troopers with designations FM through HO. One of the main squads to accompany The Knight on excursions for Snoke. If asked by members outside the Order, he will state that his station is merely “sanitation.” Age determined to be 20-21 standard years.
FM-1849: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 18-19 standard years.
FX-0367: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 22-24 standard years.
GB-1214: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 20-21 standard years.
GE-0101: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 24-25 standard years.
GI-0803: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 22-23 standard years.
GW-3295: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 17-19 standard years.
HC-1654: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 19-21 standard years.
HF-2250: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 24-26 standard years.
HK-0231: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 18-19 standard years.
HO-3999: Stormtrooper under FN-2187. Age determined to be 15-17 standard years.
PHASMA: Stormtrooper in the First Order. Frequently called by the title “Captain,” but seems to be of a higher rank. Commandeers all stormtroopers on-ground, unless overridden by Snoke or one of the leading Generals. Age determined to be around 30-34 standard years.
LEADING GENERAL HUX: One of the 5 Leading Generals in the First Order. Unclear if “Armitage Hux” is real name or just a title. A harsh man. Often seems to be a precedent to The Knight. Age determined to be around 23-27 standard years.
BB-8: Small, orange-and-white astromech. Accompanies Poe Dameron on flights. Seems relatively new; acts like a puppy.

Ep 205: Terry Carnation's "Dark Air" and Rich Hatem
“Imagine the universe, compressed on the head of a pin…”
– Scott’s remembrance of a Carl Sagan quote, which, turns out, probably originates from a parody impression of Carl Sagan
Description:
We have a very special guest joining us tonight, metaphysical "astralnaut," philosopher of the liminal, "Pope of the Paranormal," and host of the AM Radio talk show Dark Air, Terry Carnation. Terry first got his start in the paranormal radio genre when unexpectedly thrust into taking over for another show. While working as a late-night rock n' roll Disc Jockey for an FM station in Buffalo, NY, in 1992, Reginald Wilcox, the host of the paranormal call-in show that aired after Terry's slot was mysteriously murdered while Terry was in the bathroom... or so he claims. In his unflappable sense of duty, apparently stronger than his sense of legal obligation, Terry immediately took over the role of consigliere for listeners stupefied by the supernatural. And in Terry's words, "that's how a legend was created." Now, after a three-year hiatus, Terry Carnation returns with a new podcast, also called Dark Air, available starting April 1, 2021, wherever podcasts are given away for free. While you may not have heard of him, there will be something uneasily familiar about his voice and visage. And the audience will come to know his strange power for tearing off the head of disbelief and reaching down deep into our souls to yank out the viscera of our darkest fears and mysteries. Wrapped around our interview with Terry, our good buddy Rich Hatem joins us once again to discuss his latest adventures and projects. We'll also con him into playing our version of a game show, in the spirit of America's NPR radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! and Britain's Would I Lie to You? We'll tell Rich three outrageous paranormal stories, and he has to guess which one is fake. Please join us for an episode of inscrutable levity.

Rainn Wilson is best known for playing the role of Dwight Schrute on NBC's The Office. Additional film and television credits include Galaxy Quest, Almost Famous, The Rocker, Super, Six Feet Under, Juno, Backstrom, Star Trek Discovery, Thom Pain, The Meg, Mom, Don't Tell a Soul and Utopia. He will also be appearing in the forthcoming podcast Dark Air with Terry Carnation. Wilson co-founded SoulPancake, a digital media company, and the Lide Foundation, an educational initiative in rural Haiti that empowers at-risk women and girls through the arts.
Dark Air with Terry Carnation was created by Rainn Wilson and Aaron Lee and is produced by Thom Harp and Chris Kelly. Dark Air with Terry Carnation is a production of Imperial Mammoth, Audioboom and Kelly&Kelly. Theme music by Marcos Moscat
This episode features the voice talents of Jinous Khjadivian and Dana Davis as the two audience callers.

Ahogyan nekem is adnak tippeket mások listái. Köszi mindenkinek a közös gondolkodást!

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Smartphone Review
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 not only convinces with its affordable price but also its dual-camera, its metal case and its capable SoC. Find out in this review whether the Redmi Note 5’s performance is as impressive as its price.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Xiaomi smartphones are becoming increasingly more popular in Europe, particularly the Redmi series. Redmi devices have always combined good quality at a reasonable price. The Note 5 is a phablet with a 5.99-inch display, a mid-range SoC, fast Wi-Fi and a dual-camera all for under €240 (~$277).
For reference, our review unit is the M1803E7SG. This is also known as the Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera. It is neither the Redmi 5 Plus, which is listed as the Redmi Note 5 on Xiaomi's Mi website, nor is it the Redmi Note 5 Pro either. All three devices are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, but they feature different camera hardware and memory options among other differences.
We have chosen to compare the Note 5 against the Motorola Moto G6 Plus, the Huawei Y7 2018, the Maze Alpha X and the Honor 7X. Find out in this review how the Note 5 compares with similarly priced competitors and whether it continues the Redmi series ethos.

The Note 5 is available in Lake Blue, Black, Gold and Rose Gold. Our test device is the Rose Gold variant, which has a white front. The Note 5 has a metal case, which proved to be stable during our tests. Our test device did not react to pressure applied to the back of the case, while light pressure on the display causes slight waves in the LCD. Our test device withstood our attempts to bend and twist it, with hardly any creaks or cracking noises when doing so.
The design is not exceptional, but it is stylish. The metal back is sandwiched between color matching plastic areas designed to improve the reception quality. The display is flush with the case but for a slight edge. This is deliberate though and is a relatively smooth edge. The Note 5 weighs 180 g (~6.3 oz) and measures 158.5 x 75.4 x 8.1 mm (~6.2 x ~3 x ~0.32 in). This weight and dimension help the device to feel good in the hand. The rear-facing camera array protrudes slightly from the case, so the Note 5 is slightly unstable on flat surfaces.

There is also a 64 GB/4 GB option, which we would recommend over our test device as they are currently equally priced online. The Note 5 is a Dual-SIM device and supports microSD cards up to 256 GB. MicroSD cards can only be formatted as external storage, which means that app data can only be stored on the 32 GB of internal storage. Incidentally, the card tray has only two slots, so you can either use two nano-SIMs or one SIM and a microSD card.
The Note 5 features an FM radio, Bluetooth 5.0 and a fingerprint sensor. There is even an IR remote that can be used as a remote control. Unfortunately, there is only a microUSB port instead of a USB Type-C port. The microUSB port is only USB 2.0, albeit this supports USB OTG.

Our test device is running MIUI Global 9.5 and Android security patch level March 1st 2018, which was about six weeks old at the time of writing. MIUI looks different than the UI on many other Android smartphones, with Xiaomi implementing numerous changes from stock Android. MIUI should not take Android users too much time to adapt though. Frustratingly, we could not change the screen timeout as the button to confirm the change is missing. Equally frustrating is the energy-saving features, which are overly restrictive. Runtastic, for example, ran correctly only after changing numerous settings.
The Note 5 comes with many additional apps, most of which are by Xiaomi. Fortunately, there is little bloatware except for one social network app.
Communication & GPS The Note 5 is equipped with fast IEEE 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, which is rare for a €240 (~$277) device and one that will make many users happy. While the Note 5 cannot match the Motorola G6 Plus in terms of Wi-Fi performance, the Note 5 is faster than all our other comparison devices. We calculated this performance using our Linksys EA8500 reference router. Our test device loaded websites quickly when we were close to the router, but we did have to wait for some images to load. The Note 5 still had full Wi-Fi reception when we took the device around ten meters (~33 ft) away from the router with three walls between the two devices. Websites loaded just as fast as they do when we tested the Note 5 with it close to our reference router.
The Note 5 supports seven LTE bands, which is rather paltry in comparison to other devices. In practice, this means that you may struggle with connecting to an LTE network in more exotic countries. Our test device had good mobile network reception on the German D2 network. We still had good reception even in buildings in built-up areas.
Phone Functions & Call Quality The Note 5 uses Xiaomi’s phone app, which is much like Google’s standard phone app. Launching the app brings up the keypad and a list of recent calls. There is a small search window in which you can search directly for contacts. Alternatively, you bring up your contact list by clicking the contacts tab. The phone app has numerous settings such as a phone number blacklist and call recording among other features.
The Note 5 has good call quality. Our call partner sounded clear and without any background noise. Our test device reproduced our voice well, but the microphone distorted if we spoke too loudly. The opposite is true over the speakerphone, where the microphone struggled to pick out our voice if we spoke softly. Our counterpart is still easy to understand, albeit there is some mild background noise during quieter moments.
Cameras Example photograph using the front-facing camera Example photograph using the front-facing camera The Note 5 has dual rear-facing cameras, one 12 MP and one 5 MP. The secondary camera is only used to help create depth of field bokeh effect photographs and it cannot be used as a standalone camera. Photos taken with the main camera have fewer details than those taken with more premium smartphones, with some areas coming out particularly muddy and lacking definition. Our test device gets the exposure right in dark areas in good lighting and there is even some detail in very bright areas. Low-light performance is surprisingly good, but there is a clear blue tint to the photos. The Apple iPhone X captures night shots more accurately, but the latter costs practically five times as much as the Note 5. Overall, the Note 5 has an impressive rear-facing camera array given its price.
The main camera can record videos in up to 1080p at 30 FPS. The video quality is passable, although bright areas are often underexposed, while dark areas lack detail. Recordings are sharp though. There is a 120 FPS slow motion feature, which is recorded at 720p.
The Note 5 has a 13 MP front-facing camera, which in theory could make the Note 5 a selfie star. While the Note 5 does well for a more affordable device, it does not come close to more premium smartphones. Dark areas are exposed well, but bright areas often dominate a photograph. Sharpness is rather average too, but the front-facing camera reproduces colors well.

Generally, images are overly dark, particularly color reproduction.

Xiaomi does not offer any dedicated accessories on its website.
The Note 5 does not come with a manufacturer’s warranty in Europe seeing as Xiaomi are a Chinese company. You will get twenty-four months warranty if you buy through an EU supplier though. Please see our Guarantees, Return policies and Warranties FAQ for country-specific information.
Input Devices & Operation Xiaomi has installed Google GBoard as the Note 5’s default keyboard. Other keyboards are available from the Google Play Store.
The Note 5 has a touchscreen that has a slick, smooth surface. Touch inputs are precise even at the corners and at the edges of the display. There is a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device that quickly and reliably unlocks our test device. The fingerprint sensor does not have any special gestures or configurable commands like we have seen on other devices, such as the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro. There is a software-based quick ball which displays selected links when you click on them. This feature is less functional than using the standard on-screen navigation buttons though. Whereas opening a link with the quick ball takes a total of two clicks, using the standard navigation buttons takes just one click. A supplementary input method should increase functionality and ease of use in our opinion, rather than further complicate matters.
The hardware buttons can be found on the right-hand side of the case. These feel premium, are easy to use and have a clear pressure point.

Display Sub-pixel array Sub-pixel array The Note 5 has a 5.99-inch display with a 2:1 aspect ratio. The display has a 2,160x1,080 native resolution, which results in a pixel density of 403 PPI. Our test device has an impressively bright display, which averaged 532.2 cd/m² using X-Rite i1Pro 2. Only the Motorola Moto G6 Plus has a brighter display of our comparison devices, with the Honor 7X scoring just slightly lower than the Note 5. The Moto G6 Plus is an outlier in this respect though with its 723 cd/m² average maximum luminosity. This is incredibly bright for a device at this price. The Note 5 has 94% display uniformity too, which is at least 4% better than the best of our comparison devices. In practical terms, this means that the large areas of color look uniformly bright. It is worth pointing out that we achieved this level of luminosity with the device on charge and with the brightness sensor turned off. Measuring our test device either on battery or with the brightness sensor turned on results in a lower average maximum brightness value.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) ℹTo dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether. Screen flickering / PWM detected 2358 Hz ≤ 20 % brightness setting The display backlight flickers at 2358 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 20 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.
The frequency of 2358 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.
In comparison: 51 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 9378 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz was measured.
The Note 5 has a 0.23 cd/m² black value that is both notably good and significantly better than our comparison devices. This low black value helps our test device achieve a laudable 2,252:1 contrast ratio that is leagues ahead of our comparison devices. This helps make colors pop and gives black tones a rich quality to them.
We subjected our test device to our spectrophotometer and CalMAN software to get a more detailed look at the display. The results highlight a significant blue tint to the display, which results in light blue and orange tones looking noticeably different than the sRGB reference color. The color space coverage is good overall, but the blue tint is one downside.
Unfortunately, the Note 5 uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) to regulate luminosity at and below 20% brightness. We notice a flicker to the display when the brightness is at this level, which we measured at 2,358 Hz. This frequency should be high enough for those who are PWM sensitive not to feel any ill effects, although this cannot be guaranteed.
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.9 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 83 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (39.7 ms). The Note 5 has a relatively bright display, which helps when using the device outdoors. We could still see screen content with brightness set to maximum if we were not in too bright an area. The display has a glossy finish though, so reflections cannot be avoided.
The Note 5 has an IPS display, which helps to give the device strong viewing angles. There are slight brightness and color shifts at acute viewing angles, but these are picked up more by the camera than they are noticeable by the naked eye.
The Note 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, a mid-range SoC that Qualcomm announced late last year. The Snapdragon 636 has an octa-core Kyro 260 CPU that clocks up to 1.8 GHz. The Snapdragon 636 is a significant improvement on its predecessor, the Snapdragon 630 that powers the Moto G6 Plus. The Snapdragon 636 helps the Note 5 to typically perform around 20% faster than the G6 Plus in benchmarks. Equally, the Note 5 feels snappy in practice, with our test device not slowing down even when we have numerous programs open in the background.
The Snapdragon 636 integrates a Qualcomm Adreno 509 GPU that supports DirectX 12.1, OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0 and Direct3D 12. This support for modern graphics APIs should ensure that the Note 5 is future proofed at least in terms of graphics. While the Note 5 has faster GPU performance than our comparison devices too, the gap is not as great as in our CPU tests.

The Note 5 performs better than our comparison devices in browser benchmarks too. Our test device even outperformed slightly more expensive devices. Complex HTML 5 websites like Google Interland are displayed fluidly, which is reflective of our real-world use. While the Note 5 is not as fast at loading websites as premium smartphones, it is sufficient for general web browsing.

The Note 5 is on par with our comparison devices in terms of microSD card performance. We tested the Note 5 with our trusted Toshiba Exceria Pro M501 reference microSD card. The Note 5 is equipped with eMMC memory, which is faster than the average of devices that we tested with 32 GB of eMMC memory. eMMC memory is no match for faster UFS memory though. The Note 5 even struggles against the Moto G6 Plus, which is also equipped with eMMC memory.

Games The Note 5 is suitable for relatively simple mobile games. 60 FPS gaming is possible in less demanding titles like “Shadow Fight 3”, but the Note 5 struggles when we tested it against more demanding titles. “Arena of Valor”, for example, only averaged 31 FPS, while “PUBG Mobile” averaged 25 FPS. This is still high enough for stable gaming though. We would recommend looking at more expensive devices if you want to plan the most cutting-edge mobile games at 60 FPS as the Note 5 is not powerful enough for that. The Note 5 is perfectly suited for games like “Shadow Fight 3” and “Angry Birds 2” though.
The Note 5 has a single speaker on the underside of the device, the maximum volume of which we measured at 76.9 dB(A). This is not particularly loud, but the sound quality is fine. High tones are rather overbearing at maximum volume, but the speaker sings when the volume is turned down slightly. The speaker struggles with reproducing deep mid-tones, while we struggled to pick out individual instruments too. Overall though, the Note 5 has an impressive speaker for its price, albeit with a few caveats.
The Note 5 is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and Bluetooth 5.0. There are currently only a few headphones and speakers that take advantage of Bluetooth 5.0, but fortunately, the new standard is backwards compatible with all previous Bluetooth standards. The sound quality is good for both outputs. The Note 5 has an inbuilt equalizer to tweak the sound over headphones too, but you will need Xiaomi branded headphones to enable this feature.

Battery Life Power Consumption The Note 5 is a relatively inefficient device, with the big display, high screen brightness and the modern but powerful SoC all taking their toll on power consumption.
The Note 5 is relatively efficient when off and on standby, with our test device consuming 0.06 W and 0.2 W respectively. The Note 5 consumes more power than our comparison devices when the display is on though. The Note 5 is anywhere between 12% and 38% less efficient than our comparison devices overall. This is particularly true at maximum load, where our test device consumes 8.2 W. This is not only significantly higher than our comparison devices, but it is also 19% higher than the average of Snapdragon 636 powered devices that we have currently tested.
It is no surprise then that Xiaomi has incorporated aggressive background app management to keep power consumption under control. This degree of aggressiveness can lead to problems that need to run in the background though. We had to tweak the settings for Runtastic to work properly, for example.

Battery Life The Note 5 has a large 4,000 mAh battery, which helps our test device score impressive runtimes in our battery life tests despite the relatively high power consumption. Our test device lasted fourteen hours and thirty-two minutes in our Wi-Fi battery life test, during which we run a script that simulates the load required to render websites. This runtime is considerably longer than our comparison devices, thanks to the Note 5’s additional battery capacity. Our test device lasted thirty hours at idle, which indicates that the Note 5 should last for two working days with moderate use and even longer if you use infrequently use smartphones. Conversely, the Note 5 should last a full day if you use the device a lot, with our test device lasting four hours and eighteen minutes in our continuous stress test.
Xiaomi provides a 10-W quick charger in the box, which fully recharges the Note 5 in under two hours.

Pros + plenty of CPU and GPU power for the money + good call quality + long battery life + bright and high contrast display + Bluetooth 5.0 and 802.11 ac WiFi + reasonable surface temperatures under load + current version of Android + no throttling Cons - relatively high power consumption - strong blue tint to the display - the microphone is frequently too sensitive - the OS is sometimes restrictive for apps Verdict
The Redmi Note 5 is the epitome of Xiaomi’s ethos of releasing affordable but high-performance devices and demonstrates why many are longing for a European wide launch of their devices. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is an affordable smartphone that has plenty of power, good battery life, fast 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, and a bright and high-contrast display for under €240 (~$277). The Note 5 has a good speaker too, while call quality is decent and the Quick Charge support is handy. The modern SoC gives the Note 5 relatively fast LTE speeds, Bluetooth 5.0 and should future proof it for the foreseeable future.
There are some drawbacks though. The color temperature and a blue tint to the display are not great, and neither is the relatively high power consumption despite the impressive battery life. MIUI employs aggressive app management to its detriment too. This can lead to problems with apps that need to run in the background, but it does help to reduce power consumption and lengthen the battery life. The camera is the only area where the Note 5 is clearly a mid-range device, but photos are adequate overall. Surface temperatures are ok too, albeit they could be better under load.

Certainly, here's an article about radio stations in Taiwan:
Taiwan is a small island nation that is packed with culture, history, and natural beauty. From bustling cities to serene mountain retreats, there is something for everyone in Taiwan. One of the best ways to experience Taiwan is through its diverse radio stations, which offer a range of programming that reflects the country's unique mix of traditional and modern influences.
Radio has been a popular medium in Taiwan for decades, and there are now more than 70 licensed stations broadcasting across the country. These stations offer a range of programming, including news, music, talk shows, and more. Many stations are regionally focused, broadcasting content that is specific to their local area, while others have a national reach.
One of the most popular radio stations in Taiwan is ICRT (International Community Radio Taipei), which broadcasts in English and has been serving the international community in Taiwan for over 30 years. ICRT features a mix of music, news, and talk shows, and is a great resource for expats and travelers who want to stay connected to the world.
Another popular station is Hit FM, which focuses on pop music and is known for its high-energy DJs and fun contests. Hit FM has a nationwide reach and is particularly popular among younger listeners.
For those interested in news and current affairs, there are several options, including the government-owned Central News Agency Radio and the privately-owned Liberty Times Net Radio. These stations offer in-depth coverage of local and international news, as well as analysis and commentary on the issues of the day.
Other popular stations include Kiss Radio, which features a mix of pop and rock music, and UFO Network, which is known for its alternative programming and eclectic music selection.
In addition to traditional radio stations, Taiwan also has a growing number of online radio stations that offer streaming content over the internet. These stations include Indie Vox Radio, which focuses on independent music, and ICRT's online-only sister station, ICRT EZ News, which offers 24/7 news coverage in English.
Overall, Taiwan's radio scene is diverse and vibrant, with something for every listener. Whether you're interested in music, news, or talk shows, you're sure to find a station that meets your needs. So tune in, and discover the rich and varied world of Taiwanese radio!

Dez carros básicos que você pode comprar sem medo de ser feliz
<span class="hidden">–</span>Arte/Quatro Rodas

Vivo U20 Review
Vivo brought the Vivo U10 in India in late September to compete with Xiaomi and Realme at the budget end of the market. The Vivo U10 is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor as the Redmi Note 8 and the Realme 5. With the competition churning out phones at such a high rate, it was time for Vivo to push out an update, and now it has, with the Vivo U20. The naming clearly suggests that this is a higher-end model than the Vivo U10, and we are expecting this smartphone to keep the competition in the market alive.
Equipped with a powerful Snapdragon 675 SoC, this phone could have an edge over its competition. Will this be enough to sway your choice in its direction? We put the Vivo U20 to the test to find out.
Vivo U20 Design
When we got our hands on the Vivo U10 (Review) we had pointed out that it was boxy and bulky. The new Vivo U20 isn’t a whole lot different, as it weighs 193g and is 8.9mm thick. We think that some people will find it too unwieldy for daily use. The display has grown in size, and the IPS LCD panel on the Vivo U20 measures 6.53 inches. It has thin bezels on the sides and Vivo claims a screen-to-body ratio of 90.3 percent. We found the display bright enough when outdoors, and it had decent viewing angles. Vivo has opted for a full-HD+ panel which is a welcome upgrade over the HD+ display of the U10.
The back of the Vivo U20 is flat but the sides are rounded which helps when holding it in the hand. Vivo has opted for a plastic back panel and frame. The back panel has a glossy finish which makes it a fingerprint magnet. We had to constantly wipe the back of the smartphone, and ultimately, we decided to use the bundled case to prevent smudges.
The glossy finish on the back of the Vivo U20 looks gorgeous but is a fingerprint magnet
We found the power and the volume buttons to be positioned a little too high for comfort, and they needed a bit of a shuffle to reach. The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is also positioned slightly too high for our liking. Vivo still uses a Micro-USB port on the U20, which should’ve been dropped in favour of USB Type-C. The 3.5mm headphone jack and the loudspeaker are placed on either side of the Micro-USB port, along with the primary microphone.
The smartphone packs a triple camera setup at the back, placed in a module which is slightly raised.
Vivo U20 specifications and software
The Vivo U20 does boast of some impressive hardware, with the highlight being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC. This is the same processor that powered the Redmi Note 7 Pro (Review) which was launched earlier this year at a higher price. It packs quite a punch, and people looking to play games and multitask should be able to do so on the Vivo U20 without any issues. The competition at this price level, including the Realme 5 (Review), and the Redmi Note 8 (Review), use the relatively less powerful Snapdragon 665 SoC.
Vivo has matched this SoC with 4GB or 6GB of RAM, while storage is 64GB for both variants. Surprisingly, Vivo offers UFS 2.1 storage which helps while transferring files to and from the smartphones. Storage is expandable by upto 256GB using a microSD card.
Vivo has priced the base 4GB RAM variant at Rs. 10,990 while the 6GB RAM variant is priced at Rs. 11,990. You also get two colour options to choose from, Racing Black and Blaze Blue. We had the Racing Black variant for this review, which we liked. If you prefer gradient finishes, then Blaze Blue is the one for you.
The Vivo U20 gets a full-HD+ display with a waterdrop notch
Connectivity options on the Vivo U20 include Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi, four satellite navigation systems, and FM Radio. Vivo has packed a 5,000mAh battery into the U20, and supplies an 18W Dual-Engine fast charger in the box.
Vivo ships the U20 with Funtouch OS 9.2 running on top of Android 9 Pie. There is a lot of preinstalled bloatware. You get apps such as EasyShare, GameCenter, Gaana, Amazon Shopping, Helo, Dailyhunt, Opera, Facebook, WhatsApp, WPS office and one called iManager. Some of them are super spammy with notifications, and it would be better to simply uninstall them.
Funtouch OS requires you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen for the quick toggles which is the exact opposite of the action for every other Android smartphone. This can get annoying and confusing for the user. Vivo has baked in a few other customisations as well. Users can change the UI theme as well as the animations for charging and face recognition.
Vivo’s smart assistant Jovi is also built into the smartphone. It can help you recognise products you point the camera at, and reminds you to drink water throughout the day. There is Google’s Digital Wellbeing as well as parental controls, which help you manage how you spend your time on the smartphone. Smart features such as raise-to-wake, and the ability to quickly launch apps by drawing alphabets on the lock screen, are also available.
Vivo offers a Motorbike mode which rejects all incoming calls when you are in motion, and sends an SMS automatically to callers.
The Vivo U20 runs Funtouch OS on top of Android 9 Pie
The Ultra Game mode which is filled with feature such as off-screen Autoplay which lets a game run even with the display switched off. You can block notifications and answer calls automatically in hands-free mode to minimise interruptions when you’re playing games. If you don’t want to be bothered, it can reject calls right away instead. You can customise these options for each game individually.
This mode also has a “sound localisation training center”, and this is the first time we are seeing such a thing on a smartphone. This feature is for PUBG Mobile and it trains you to recognise sounds from the game in an attempt to improve your performance. If you are a serious gamer you might find it useful, whereas casual gamers can ignore it.
Vivo U20 performance and battery life
The Vivo U20 managed to grab our attention for its aggressive price and powerful processor. The Snapdragon 675 debuted with the Redmi Note 7 Pro, and when launched it was the most powerful processor in a smartphone priced under Rs. 15,000 and now it has made its way to a lower budget tier. We did not notice any lag while scrolling through the Vivo U20’s UI, or any stutters when switching between multiple apps. Since we had the top-end 6GB RAM variant, we did not face any issues while multitasking either, and the phone could seamlessly switch between multiple apps.
The U20 was quick to unlock using the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner as well as the face unlock feature. While the display is not as punchy as the AMOLED panels on some other phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy M30s (Review), it does get bright enough when outdoors. The speaker wasn’t loud though and also sounded tinny.
There is support for dual 4G VoLTE as well as a dedicated microSD card slot.
Our benchmark tests gave us a fair idea as to how the Vivo U20 with its Snapdragon 675 processor fares against the Redmi Note 8 and the Realme 5s, which are powered by the Snapdragon 665. The Vivo U20 scored 210,249 in AnTuTu Benchmark v8, which is higher than the 169,832 scored by the Redmi Note 8 and 167,487 scored by the Realme 5s. The U20 also scored 504 and 1,638 in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core tests respectively. We also saw 42fps and 7.8fps in GFXBench’s T-Rex and Car Chase benchmarks respectively.
We played PUBG Mobile on the Vivo U20, which defaulted to the High preset with graphics set to HD and the frame rate set to High. We did not notice any issues at these settings and could play the game well. Just like we’ve experienced with other phones powered by the Snapdragon 675, the Vivo U20 did get slightly warm to the touch after gaming for around 20 minutes. We also noticed a battery drop of 5 percent over the same duration.
Battery life for the Vivo U20 is quite good, and this smartphone can last over a day and a half easily on a single charge. With our usage which consisted of an active WhatsApp account, playing PUBG Mobile, taking a few camera samples, and using GPS for navigation, we were left with 45 percent at the end of 24 hours. In our HD video loop test, the smartphone managed 14 hours and 59 minutes.
Charging the 5,000mAh battery does not take long. The supplied fast charger got us up to 33 percent in half an hour and 67 percent in an hour. A full charge will take around two hours.
Vivo U20 cameras
Vivo has gone with a triple camera setup for the U20, which consists of a 16-megapixel primary camera with a Sony IMX499 sensor, an 8-megapixel super-wide-angle camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. For selfies, it has a 16-megapixel camera. The camera application is similar to what we have seen on recent Vivo smartphones. It has Night, Portrait, Pano, Live Photo, Pro, AR Stickers, and Time-Lapse modes to shoot with. It has a Jovi feature as well, which uses Vivo’s Jovi assistant to identify what the camera is pointed towards and find e-commerce listings for similar products.
There are quick toggles for HDR, and different filters which can be applied before taking a shot. The camera app offers a toggle for 2x zoom which the phone does digitally. There are separate toggles to switch to the wide-angle and super macro cameras which we feel should have been integrated better.
The Vivo U20 is quick to lock focus and set the exposure right, it also enables HDR automatically when shooting in bright environments. Photos taken with the Vivo U20 looked good, but did not have the best details. This was evident on zooming in to them, and we could see slightly grainy output. The wide-angle-camera does deliver a wider field of view but we could see distortion at the edges, and the sensor failed to capture details.
Photos shot using primary (above) and wide-angle (below) cameras on the Vivo U20
Close-up shots fared better, as the phone managed good detail and a natural depth of field between the subject and the background. Portraits had good edge detection and the U20 blurred the background correctly, but you don’t get the option to set the level of blur in this mode. There is a separate Bokeh mode that lets you control this, and we think these two should have been combined.
Close-up shot using the Vivo U20 (tap to see full-sized image)
Low-light camera performance isn’t great. The Vivo U20 missed out on details and delivered grainy output. Switching to Night mode did result in brighter images but they weren’t significantly better. The phone keeps the shutter open for longer, so you will need to be steady while taking a shot in this mode. The overall quality of the cameras was nowhere near the best we’ve seen in this price range.
Photos click without and with night mode (tap to see full-sized image)
Selfies taken with the Vivo U20 (tap to see full-sized image)
Selfies shot indoors were also below average in quality and you will notice grain on zooming in. It’s best to limit these selfies to casual social media sharing.
Video recording maxes out at 4K for the primary camera and 1080p for the selfie shooter. We found video stabilisation to be adequate when shooting in the day, but focusing speed could have been better. In low light, there was a significant shimmer effect which was also visible in the viewfinder while shooting.
Verdict
Vivo stirred up the competition when it launched the U10 in the sub-Rs. 10,000 market and the company is repeating that at a slightly more premium positioning with the Vivo U20. This new smartphone packs in powerful hardware and a big battery at an aggressive price. That said, the U20 isn’t a perfect all-rounder; the cameras did leave us wanting.
If you are looking for a device primarily for gaming then the Vivo U20 should be pretty high on your shortlist. You could also consider the Realme 5s and the Redmi Note 8 (Review) as possible alternatives to the Vivo U20.

Compatibility of what you might ask?
Over here, we are talking about Qi compatibility, which is basically what allows wireless charging. If you have an older iPhone model that does not support wireless charging, a wireless charging dock with Qi would be useless for you.
Apart from that, also make sure that the dock is compatible with iPhone’s lightning USB cable. You need a MFi certified lightening cable in order to charge your iPhone properly without damaging it.

Backup Battery
Most iPhone alarm docks are powered through an AC cord. If in case the power runs out, the clock dock will automatically turn off. And when it turns off, the clock resets back to it’s standard time.
This can be an issue you can face if your area has a power problem, so what you need is a dock with backup battery. Backup battery keeps the clock running and thus, you don’t have to set the time every time the dock shuts off.
Alternatively, you should look for a clock dock that doesn’t requires you to re-calibrate the time, even if the dock powers off due to some fault.

Technology is advancing at an amazing pace. Now we have no choice but to join the ongoing flow of technological advancements. We are all enjoying the privileges, but it this all worth the environmental risk? Recently, I have spent quite some time on my Spectrum TV and internet package, checking out various channels and websites for relevant stuff concerning the 5G technology.
So, is it going to take us towards new heights of cellular technology advancements, or bring down further by implying irreversible health and environmental risks? Before we decide anything, let’s get to know this technology a bit first!
What is 5G Technology
Although it is creating quite a hype these days, this technology is not entirely new. This year, however, it has been rolled out in the market for the general public to use. Not more than a dozen cities would get access to this technology this year, and it is going to take about 5 more years for it to be accessible to half of the world population.
But this is not stopping top cellular manufacturing companies from jumping in into the competition of coming up with 5G enabled mobile phones. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Fold are 5G-compatible. LG, Motorola, Huawei have also launched 5G compatible models of their own.
5G: the Benefits
This technology is going to benefit a lot more avenues than were previously expected. It is going to be integrated into augmented and virtual realities. We’ll be able to see self-driving cars requiring low latency, latencies even lower than 1-millisecond mark. Mobile phones would be able to share information in thousandth parts of a second. But for all this to happen, 5G infrastructure is needed.
The Concerns over Time
Well, the rumors you have been listening to, concerning the hazards of the latest 5G technology, are not all baseless. It is almost been a decade since environmentalists all around the world have been talking about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation. You too must have come across those controversies related to Wi-Fi technology being a health risk, and smart meters being not so smart environmentally.
People are concerned, but the concerns are, so far, mainly hypothetical. Electromagnetic hypersensitivity, a disease in which you experience certain symptoms in the presence of devices that work with electromagnetic technology, Wi-Fi’s and mobile phones, for example, have been nothing so far but observed behaviors based on hypothesis of different people. Despite the claims, scientific reviews from experts all around the world claim otherwise. They say that the majority of such people cannot even confirm the presence of such devices if they are not able to see them.
But recently, the state of California has passed the law that stores and shops should display a notice if any radiation-emitting devices are present. This has again raised questions regarding the safety concerns of common people.
Radio frequency: Dangerous or Not?
The root cause of all the concerns about 5G technology is the radio frequency radiation (RFR). RFR includes every device that emits electromagnetic spectrum waves. This includes x-rays, microwaves, cordless phones, even the sun. We can say that RFR in its origin, is not that dangerous. What makes it dangerous are the circumstances it might be passing through before coming in contact with humans. So, what is the deciding factor? It is the ionizing or non-ionizing radiation which makes it safe or dangerous. To simplify it, non-ionizing radiation is not strong enough to affect chemical bonds. Your power lines, FM radio, Wi-Fi, these are all safe. Microwave is an exception though. They are non-ionizing but can damage and penetrate tissues.
The Risks: Worth it or Not?
A common view is that, due to the increased demand, there are going to be many more 5G transmitters. The new technology is going to require thousands of wireless antennas in all of our neighborhoods. All cities and towns are going to be filled by them.
Another concern is that the greater the frequency, the higher the risk. 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4g technologies work on 1-5 gigahertz frequency. The range of 5G frequency is between 24 to 90 gigahertz. Depending on it, the greater the frequency, the riskier it is for all living organisms.
But these are all speculations and assumptions. For now, the data points out that 5g is a non-ionizing technology, is safe, and there is no need to be alarmed. So, I assume it is still safe to call my Spectrum service number and get my package renewed.
If you have any questions or concerns, do share in the comments below!
