German IDM Playlist (YouTube)
If you liked last week's 1990s IDM playlist update, then you're sure to like this slate of IDM tunes from Germany that I just cobbled together too. A bunch of chill, immersive, solitudinous, meditative, and intricate tracks to bliss all the way out to that'll have you looking and feeling like the humanoid from the Artificial Intelligence cover 😌.
We start with an amazing dispatch from UK trio The Black Dog, whose 1994 remix of Darmstadt duo Alter Ego's "Tanks Ahead" makes for a really lovely, acid-cascading IDM dreamscape of sorts. It originally appeared on the B-side of an Alter Ego 12-inch called Nude Restaurant, which was released on Frankfurt label Harthouse, and then was included on a Harthouse comp called Dark Hearts - Volume 1 the following year. There's multiple uploads of this song on YouTube, and together their play count totals somewhere around 15.2K. By far the most played track in this playlist.
Following that is a stunner from an unknown Bavarian duo called Druckwelle. These guys only put out two 12-inches in their career that both came out in '98, but in 2000, they also had an exclusive called "Unteracherting" that appeared on the Leeds-based Leaf label's Invisible Soundtracks Volume 4 comp. Only 195 views on YouTube. Heady banger.
Next, a grip of tunes from a 2000 double-disc compilation that I've really come to cherish over the years called Putting the Morr Back in Morrissey. The album has nothing to do with The Smiths' frontman, but instead features some popular names from the German realms of indie, electronic, and post-rock: The Notwist, Arovane, and Lali Puna, to name a few. All pretty low play counts on these tracks, ranging from a little above 150 to a little over 2K. Earthy and organic feel to a lot of them.
And lastly, a few cuts from another compilation from 2000 called Cashier Escape Route, put out on the Manchester, UK-based City Centre Offices, who also had a branch in Berlin. The album's subtitle labels itself as Modern Supermarket Music and I think its exclusive theme, "Cashier Escape Song," by Berlin's Styrofoam, happens to nail the vibe quite well; bright, chipper, futuristic, kaleidoscopic song. Only 79 plays.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
Alter Ego - "Tanks Ahead (Black Dog Mix)" Druckwelle - "Unteracherting" The Notwist - "Scoop" Arovane - "Delc:r" Blond - "Status" Kandis - "Herbstzwilling (Tied & Tickled Trio Rmx)" Tied & Tickled Trio - "Utrom (Kandis Remix)" Blond - "Status (B. Fleischmann Rmx)" Lali Puna - "Fast Forward (Flowchart Rmx)" Dynamo - "18°" Styrofoam - "Cashier Escape Song" Roger van Lunteren - "N-2097"
12 songs. 65 minutes.
Playlist is also on YouTube Music.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

German Downtempo Playlist
Here we go, a brand new playlist of downtempo music from Germany! It’s not very long, but 10 tracks is a solid start, I think.
So, for the time being, this thing is dominated by a bunch of tracks from a fantastic compilation that was released in 2000 called Putting the Morr Back in Morrissey, which has nothing al all to do with The Smiths’ frontman himself, besides the fact that some of these tunes from Berlin label Morr Music are a bit melancholic and solitudinal. Really, the essence of the double-disc is to strike a cool balance between the intertwining worlds of downtempo, IDM, and indie-post-rock, while maintaining an earthy, crunchy, and organic feel the whole way through. And you get a good dose of it from these underground-popular and not so popular German acts. Most of these songs are currently sitting at under 10,000 plays, but a few of them are a bit over that mark, and then there’s one outlier, Christian Kleine’s “Bitter Things,” which is a sweet, jingling piece of trip hop, that weirdly enough, has over 313,000 plays; and its corresponding YouTube video only has ~4,800 plays, so, why the stark difference across the two platforms, I have no idea, but it also looks like an official “This Is Christian Kleine” playlist was unveiled on Spotify on the same exact day that I’m writing this post?!? What the hell?
Anyway, before you dive into some select cuts off of that Morr sampler, you’ve got the opening track on this playlist to tangle with first, which is an epically tribal seafaring odyssey from Frankfurt legend Oliver Lieb, made under his Ambush moniker, called “Casablanca.” Originally released in ’94, this song later appeared on the famed Harthouse label’s Dark Hearts – Volume One compilation the following year. It’s currently at under 10,500 plays and is deserving of a whole lot more, because it really is such a good piece of spellbindingly cinematic downtempo.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
The Ambush – “Casablanca” The Notwist – “Scoop” Christian Kleine – “Bitter Things” Herrmann & Kleine – “Hello, This One Is for You” Styrofoam – “The River Breaks” Lali Puna – “Don’t Think” Hessen – “Sylvester (New Years Day Remix)” Kandis – “Herbstzwilling (Tied & Tickled Trio Rmx)” Tied & Tickled Trio – “Utrom (Kandis Remix)” Wunder – “Sn (Hessen Remix)”
Now, all those songs are on the YouTube version of this playlist too, but I added a couple more to it that aren’t on Spotify as well. And both selections happen to come from a compilation called Cashier Escape Route, which was released in 2000 on Manchester, UK’s City Centre Offices label, who also had a branch in Berlin. The subtitle on that album reads, “a City Centre Offices compilation of modern supermarket music,” so just try to imagine yourself going food shopping in a place that’s solely lit by neon lights that line all the shelves and aisles, rather than ones that buzz and shine brightly from overhead, and I think you’ll be able to catch the vibe from Styrofoam’s “Cashier Escape Song”—currently at 77 plays—and Roger van Lunteren’s “N-2097”—currently at over 6,000 plays across its couple uploads. Plus, “N-2097” comes with some awesomely trippy visual accompaniment as well.
Styrofoam – “Cashier Escape Song” Roger van Lunteren – “N-2097”
Playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So we’re at 10 songs and about 52 minutes on Spotify and 12 songs and 63 minutes on YouTube. And I’ve got a shorter playlist of German downtempo that consists solely of tunes from the year 2000 too.
