"Guess there really is first time for everything," Madison teased right back, shoulders shrugging nonchalantly as a confident smirk was sent in John's general direction. She'd taken his advice about the potential consequences of her actions seriously, though, not wanting any sort of blemish on her record as a doctor.
"So, are you joining us for drinks tonight?" Given he was the new kid in town, so to speak, someone else would surely pick up his tab that evening. "Or does an old man like you need to head straight home so he can hop right into bed and get his full eight hours?"
Tumblr media
❛ while that is unfortunate, I still think I won. ❜ john teased. but as he thought about it more, maybe it was more even. ❛ i would just be more careful about tricking patients. that could backfire. ❜ he used his peripheral vision and saw doctor charles, hoping that he didn't hear her. she was only in her first year, while he was nearly done. soon he would be an attending. that alone was crazy.
❛ i guess you are right. ❜ he really doesn't deal well with losing his child patients.

Warnings: angst, fluff, cussing, inaccurate medical talk, fever, vomit, hospitals

Tumblr media
You loved your brother, Connor Rhodes, to death and he loved you the same, maybe even more. You love your sister, Claire Rhodes, too but not as much as you loved Connor. They practically raised you. Your living situation was not good. Your father, Cornelius Rhodes, was a massive jerk and your mother passed away when you were young. You looked up to Clarie as a mother figure and Connor as a father figure. Connor was only 16 when you were born and he instantly fell in love with you and was proud to be the big brother and jumped at every chance to help out with you. He was the best big brother you could ask for. Clarie was the best sister you could ask for too but it wasn't a bond like you and Connor had.
Growing up was not the most pleasant and it turned worse when your mother passed. When Connor turned 18, he tried so hard to get custody over you but it was quickly shot down even though he had a steady income and home but your dad was so powerful that he made it not happen. It also didn't help that Connor was going to medical school and wasn't home a lot but it could've worked, you still visited him often and had a lot of sleepovers with him plus it was a place for you to escape from your dad.  When your guys’ dad started to criticize him for his medical school he had enough and moved to a different state but that didn't stop you from contacting him all the time and taking trips, when you were allowed, down to see him in Guadalajara, Mexico. It broke your heart that he moved but your bond never weakened and when he spent his residency in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, you weren't allowed to visit him but video calling was a daily routine. He hated that he couldn't bring you with him but he didn't have custody and it would be too much hassle to get you over to Saudi Arabia whereas Mexico was a little easier.
—------
When Connor finally came back to Chicago, you were 12, you were ecstatic you finally had your father figure back. You caught him up on everything and while he was away. Claire resented him for leaving but she could never be mad at you. She would do everything to protect you, if you had girl questions or boy problems you were going to her. Your dad couldn't give a shit about you, sure he fed you and gave you a roof over your head but he didn't want you and he could care less about you. So, when Connor came back and started working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center for his fellowship for trauma surgery fellowship everything went back to normal. Your daily meetups, sleepovers, and going to him for problems and medical issues started right back up like he never left. He still tried to get custody but it failed every time but he wasn't going to stop fighting for you, they wouldn't let him have you even if you said you wanted to live with him.
—------
When you were 13 you had gotten really sick like hospital sick. It was a night that Connor wasn't working and you were just in agony. Claire had moved out and your father was at a charity thing leaving you home alone. It started in the middle of the night waking you up from a dead sleep. You desperately tried to call your dad but it just went to voicemail so you tried one more time and he answered
“Dad, I don't feel good.” You told him.
“What's wrong?” He asked and this gave a you some hope.
“My stomach really hurts. I feel like I'm going to throw up. I feel hot.” You said
“Suck it up. There is medicine in the cabinet downstairs.” He said and hung up and you let out a sob.
You pulled yourself off your bed and dragged yourself to the steps and took painful steps down the steps. You sobbed the entire time. You finally got to the kitchen and opened the cabinet and grabbed the painkillers and you took them. Almost immediately as it touched your stomach you were throwing up everywhere. You were so weak. So weak that you just ended up collapsing onto the kitchen floor just barely missing your throw up. Thankfully you had grabbed your phone and slowly and shakingly grabbed your phone, your vision blurring. You unlocked it and pulled up your contacts and hit one you knew all too well. It rang not even once and Connor's voice came through.
“Y/N/N? It's 3 AM. What's wrong?” He asked in a voice full of concern.
“I... I... I don't feel good.” You said your teeth were chattering because despite your temperature, you were freezing.
“Where's dad? Did you tell him?” He asked and you could hear him rustling around.
“He's at a charity event. I... I called him and told him but he told me to suck it up and take the medicine in the cabinet in the kitchen. I'm in so much pain, Con. I took the medicine and immediately threw it up.” You told him the feeling of the cold floor was nice.
“Bastard.” He murmured “I'm on my way. You stay put.” He said.
“I'm hot but so cold.” You said letting your eyes droop. “So tired.” You added.
“Hey, stay on the phone with me. Why didn't you call Clarie? She lives closer.” He asked
“She's gone out of town.” You said and you could hear him get into his car and the engine start.
“Son of a bitch.” He said and started to drive as fast as he could while still obeying the speed limit. He kept talking to you but you stopped responding and that scared him. He hung up when he arrived at your guys’ family home. He was quick to jump out and run to the front door and grab the key under the mat and opened it.
The house was dark but he knew where you were at. “Y/N/N. It's me.” He yelled out but got no response. He walked into the kitchen and saw you lying there. “Fuck.” He murmured to himself and ran over to you missing your vomit. He kneeled down and touched your forehead and retracted his hand “Damn, Sis. You're burning up.” He said. He walked over to the drawer and grabbed the thermometer and thankfully it was on that stuck in your ear. He put it there and waited for it to beep and when it did, he cursed and read it aloud “104.3. Fuck I need to take you in.” He said and started to try and wake you up. “Y/N/N, Sweetheart. It's me. Your brother. Can you open your eyes?” He asked as he pressed two fingers to your neck. “Damn, pulse is way too fast.” He said and him talking must've started to rouse you.
“Con?” You asked and he smiled softly.
“Yea it's me. Can you open your eyes?” He asked and you cracked them open until they were open. “There we go.” He said.
“Tired.” You said and started to close again.
“No. Hey, keep those eyes open. I'm going to take you to Med, Ok?” He asked and you nodded.
“Ok. Go see Will?” You asked and he smiled. Will has become a favorite of yours and he doesn’t know why.
“Yes. We'll go see Will.” He said as he started to stand you and your legs shook like a newborn foal's standing for the first time. “Can you walk?” He asked.
“I don’t know.” You said in barely just a whisper and you tried to take a few steps and all but collapsed into his arms.
“That is a no.” He said and then he was scooping you up into his arms and walking out of the house and to his car. He got you in the passenger side seat and then him in the driver’s seat and he was off heading to Med as fast as he could. He continued to talk to you to keep you awake and before you knew it you were pulling into Med. He parked and turned the car off and got out heading to the passenger side seat. He quickly scooped you up and shut the door hastily. He rushed you into ED where he saw Maggie. “Mags.” He said and she looked up at him and quickly rushed you into a bay. “She wants Will.” He said and she nodded. She walked out of the room and went to get Will not even a second later he was rushing into the room.
“Connor? What is going on?” He asked
“She called me saying she didn’t feel good and when I asked her what was wrong, she told me she was hot but so cold. She said she took some medicine but once she took it, she immediately threw up. When I got there, she was passed out on the floor next to a pile of vomit. She was burning up to the touch, she had and still has according to the monitor a temperature of 104.3 and her pulse was fast, way too fast.” He explained as they could see from the monitor “She also said she was really tired. I woke her up and had her stand and she shook like a life, she tried to walk but she collapsed into my arms and then I quickly got her in the car and rushed her here.” He finished.
“Why isn’t Cornelius here instead?” Will asked
“He is at a charity event. Left her by herself. She called him and told him she was sick but he told her to suck it up and take the medicine in the cabinet.
“Bastard.” Will said
“That’s what I said.” Connor said
“I want to get an ultrasound done on her stomach to rule out appendicitis.” Will said and Connor nodded.
“I agree.” Connor said and soon Will was calling in the ultrasound machine and he got to work with the help of a nurse. “So, it is not appendicitis.” Connor confirmed and Will nodded.
“I want to run some tests on her. Swab for flu and viral infection and take some blood as well.” He said and Connor nodded. Throughout this entire process you had been out and now that you were in the hospital you were allowed to sleep. “I want to get some fluids running to help with her temperature and get some IV children’s Tylenol on board as well.” He said and again Connor nodded. As the nurse was preparing everything you started to wake up.
“Will?” You asked and he smiled and looked over at you.
“Hey, Sweetheart. We’re going to get you feeling better, ok? I just want to run some tests.” He said and you nodded.
“Ok.” You said and then you saw the needles “Con, no.” You said and shook your head but that was a mistake because it hurt your head.
“Hey it is ok. I’ll be here the entire time. Ok?” He asked and you nodded and then he nodded at the nurse and Will and everyone got to work. Soon blood was taken, fluids were hooked up, and swabs were taken.
“Get those tests going ASAP.” Will told the nurse and she nodded and they were out of the room. Will had to tend to some other patients and you both understood and they let you go back to sleep. With the fluids going your pulse was starting to come up and it was steady since you were sleeping and your temperature was starting to come down and the IV children’s Tylenol helped with that. 20 minutes later Will was coming in.
“So?” Connor asked
“She has a really bad viral infection and she has a really bad case of the flu. I want to get her admitted and keep her here for a few days.” Will said
“This had to be going on for a few days.” Connor said
“Did she not tell you anything about it?” He asked and Connor shook his head.
“No, she didn’t look sick when we met up a couple of days ago.” Connor said, sighing and Will nodded.
“Let’s get her moved.” Will said and so they did.
The next time you were waking up, 3 hrs. after coming into ED, you were waking up in a room. “Connor?” You asked sluggishly.
“Hey, Sis. I’m here.” He said coming over to you as he entered the room with a cup of coffee.
“Where am I?” You asked and he smiled and came over and sat next to you.
“In the hospital. You have a really bad case of the flu and a bad viral infection. Will is taking care of you and has you on antibiotics.” He said and you nodded and you were struggling to keep your eyes open.
“Dad?” You asked
“Not here.” He said and to be honest he didn’t want him here. He hadn’t even thought about him since you arrived here and boy was, he going to have some words for him. Go back to sleep.” He said and you nodded and were out like a light and he could tell because your heart rate slowed. Now it was time to have some words for his father. He made sure you were asleep before pulling his phone out and stepping out of the room where he saw Will. “Hey, I need to make a phone call. Mind staying with her?” He asked and Will smiled.
“Of course.” He said and walked into the room with you and Connor walked into the doctor’s lounge and dialed his dad’s phone number and he rang 5 times before he answered. Cornelius didn’t even have time to say hi before Connor started to rail into him.
“Do you know where your daughter is?” Connor asked
“No, but she has made a mess in the kitchen she needs to clean up.” Cornelius said and Connor saw red.
“She’s in the hospital because she has a bad case of the flu and a bad case of a viral infection.” Connor said venom in his words.
“Well, she needs to get home now and clean the mess up.” He said
“She will be doing no such thing. Not anymore.” Connor said
“And why is that?” Cornelius asked
“Because she is coming to live with me. I was the one that found her when she called and told me what was going on while you were too busy at a charity event. She told you she was sick and you told her to suck it up. You told her to take the medicine in the cabinet and she instantly threw it up. She was running a 104.3 fever when I found her and she couldn’t even stand or walk. She was so weak. I’m filing for sole custody of her and you’re going to sign it because you are not fit to be a father let alone a guardian. You will not be coming to see her. You will not see her at all unless she is with me or have contact with her. That is final.” He went off on him. Cornelius was silent by the time he was done.
“Fine. Keep the bitch. I don’t care. I’ll have her stuff packed and waiting for you to pick it up.” He said and then hung up the phone. Connor was relieved now he needed to start the paperwork. He let out a sigh of relief.
Connor walked back to your room and saw you wake and sitting up talking to Will. You looked over and saw him. You still looked tired but you were awake. “Where were you?” You asked.
“I was on the phone with dad.” He said
“I’ll leave the two of you alone. I will be back in a few to check on you.” Will said, directing that last sentence to you. You and Connor nodded and Will left.
“Is he coming?” You asked and he shook his head.
“No.” He said and you looked relieved “I have good news though.” He said and you perked up.
“Oh?” You asked curious and he nodded.
“From now on you will be coming to live with me and you won’t see him or talk to him.” Connor said and your face brightened.
“Really?” You asked and he nodded.
“Really.” He said and you squealed in excitement. Your wish was finally coming true. You were going to be living with your big brother. You then started to go on about all the things you two could do together and he smiled and nodded. You suddenly stopped talking and looked at him and smiled. “What?” He asked.
“I love you, Con.” You said and he smiled.
“I love you too, Y/N/N. Now and forever.” He said and he leaned over to kiss your forehead.
“Now and forever.” You confirmed. Your wish did come true and you couldn’t be happier.

ONE DAY IN OCTOBER - Part I
A MATT CASEY X HALSTEAD!OFC FIC (Charlotte Halstead Casey)
A/N: so this has been an idea that I’ve been slowly working and developing for about a month now and @deanstead has been such a great & lovely helpful mutual through it… hope everyone enjoys this, as I am so excited about it!!
Tumblr media
A cool October sun was high in the sky above the bustling city of Chicago that morning, and luckily Dr. Charlotte Halstead Casey found herself alone on the rooftop of the city’s Gaffney Chicago Medical Center to enjoy it.
A lifelong Chicago resident, her green eyes watched from high above as if she were a mere bird, looking down as cars rolled down the roads and people walked up along the sidewalks. Rush hour had been over for a few hours now, so it wasn’t as busy as it would’ve been as people hurried even more to reach work or school. When Charlotte had arrived for work the night before, the noisy city had been cloaked in a dark twilight with little to nobody wandering around.
Glancing down at her hand that was encircled around a travel mug filled with warm decaffeinated coffee, Charlotte grinned as the sunlight hit her diamond engagement ring and matching wedding band. It had been nearly six months since she had married the love of her life, Matthew Casey. He had dropped her off at the hospital last night with a kiss goodbye and a warm hug too. Matt was very much everything she had ever dreamed about.
It wasn’t often that Charlotte found herself working the night shift in the emergency department, but it had been a case of seniority needed and a call from Goodwin herself. Luckily, she hadn’t been working the day before and had been relaxing at home while Matt worked on one of his construction jobs in Wicker Park.
Looking back out at the metropolis that she called home, she sighed. It looked like it was going to be a slow day in Chicago, and luckily a quiet night too, as Goodwin had signed her up for night shifts for now on. Taking a gulp of her drink, Charlotte let herself be lost in the tranquil atmosphere around her on the roof, waiting for the moments to fly by and for caffeinated coffee once again.
Tumblr media
Charlotte had been so lost in her daydreaming mind and her imagination running wild like a hummingbird would, that she did not see the figure that had appeared on the rooftop paradise that she had claimed for herself that mid-morning. Her green eyes were fluttering shut and there was a soft smile dancing on her soft lips which made her look as serene as the view that surrounded her.
With soft steps that were not unlike his soft wavy hair, did the lone figure make his way to where Charlotte stood alone. There too was a soft smile painted upon his face, like there was upon her own, and as he found his way to be at her side high above Chicago, the man placed a lean arm around her shoulders as if he had done it many times before.
Charlotte’s eyes shot open as if they were bullets firing from a pistol at the sudden touch and her wide eyes pivoted just as fast to face the figure beside her and a chuckle slipped from both their lips as she punched him jokingly on the chest. Her older brother Will Halstead grinned as she did so.
“Even after all these years, you still react to the slightest touch, Tater,” he chuckled, ruffling her dark hair, not unlike all those years ago.
Charlotte rolled her eyes at his comment and his childhood nickname for her, which seemed to be sticking around even as they were adults. Trust Will and Jay, her other older brother, to find out her name was also the name of a potato species when they were kids. She was grateful they at least didn’t call her Tater Tot.
“Well you still happen to have the coldest hands in Chicago, so we’re even Billy,” she grinned back as she used her own childhood nickname for her eldest brother in return. A louder laugh than before erupted from her lips as Will grimaced.
“You know you’re the only one I’ll ever let call me that?” said Will as he leaned on the railing beside his sister. His brown eyes followed the sights below like Charlotte had done before. “Jay is the same, only you get to call him Jayjay.”
A broad smile appeared on Charlotte’s face at his comment. Smugly, she nudged Will in his side. “That’s because I’m your baby sister,” she said mirthfully. It was true, ever since she had been born all those years ago in 1988, Charlotte had been the apple of her brothers’ eyes and spoiled rotten by two Halsteads. “Y'know, Pops is the same.”
Will nodded as he glanced at her. “That’s because you’re his little girl,” replied Will with a soft smile. “Pops didn’t expect to have a little girl, even Mom thought she would have another boy.”
Charlotte giggled as she shook her head. Thank god her parents had not had another boy, the old house back in Canaryville probably wouldn’t have survived that. “Remember the time when I refused to do the tap class Mom signed me up for and how I wanted to go to the ice hockey club with you and Jay?” said Charlotte quietly as she reminisced.
“How could I not?” chortled Will, his soft auburn curls jiggling with the movement of his head. “Mom was stunned, wondered where her little girly girl had gone!”
Sighing, Charlotte remembered that too. Theresa Halstead had been aghast about her only daughter wanting to act like her older brothers and not do all the girly things she was finally getting to do now she had a daughter. “I think I got pulled from the peewee team after Jay punched Eddie Lynch after he made me fall and break my arm,” said Charlotte, thinking about that moment with her brother.
“Yeah you did, I think Pops had a bust-up with Coach Murphy over all of that,” added Will as he turned to lean his back against the railing and so did Charlotte before taking another sip of her coffee. “I think that was when Jay switched to soccer, and you got into gymnastics?”
Charlotte nodded. She had got into gymnastics after that fiasco, at least it was all girls in her club in Bridgeport. “Yeah it was, Mom didn’t want me roughhousing with the hockey boys like I would with you and Jay at home,” she chuckled. It was true, and she still did have a tough side to her, having grown up a Halstead in Canaryville. “You just kept to your baseball, which Pops loved.”
“South Side pride, it’s in our blood little sis,” laughed Will as he threw his head back looking up at the fall sun. “I think it was Pop’s proudest moment when I won the high school baseball award.”
Charlotte rolled her eyes at the statement, which was the understatement of the century. Patrick Halstead was probably the biggest baseball fan in Canaryville and had been absolutely ecstatic about the prize at the De La Salle Institute, to the amusement of Will, Jay, Charlotte and their mother. Usually, Pat Halstead was a man of few words and even less emotion.
For a while the two siblings stood in silence, and the only sound was that of the lively city many floors below.
It was nice like that, just the two of them on a quiet day in October.
Tumblr media
After minutes of watching the city and clouds go by, Will quickly grasped his sister’s travel mug and took a sip from it before spitting it back out.
“Serves you right,” giggled Charlotte as she took back the mug from Will, who was glaring at her with lighthearted disgust.
Will nodded, rolling his eyes in playful annoyance. “I see you’re still on the decaf?”
“Yup, you know I’m off it.”
Again, Will nodded his head in agreement as he knew that. “I know, I just hoped you had hot cocoa or something? Something that is actually nice!”
“Hey, decaf coffee is actually nice!” retorted Charlotte as she playfully shoved her brother to the side, making him stumble slightly. It wasn’t a lie, she had been surprised to find herself enjoying it.
Will shook his head and stood upright. “If you say so, Tater,” he replied before turning to face Charlotte with a more serious expression upon his face and his deep brown eyes fixated on her as he was reading her innermost thoughts. “How was your shift?”
Shrugging her shoulders, Charlotte sighed in response to her brother. “Just the usual stuff, I was only called in because Ethan is sick, and you worked the day shift.”
“Yeah Maggie had said about that when I arrived earlier,” said Will with a sigh, himself as he reached out to rub Charlotte’s shoulder affectionately. “I hope you still took it easy though.”
Charlotte took a large gulp from her mug before smiling at her brother. Even now, after all these years, Will was still the ever protective brother he had always been in her life. “I can still do my job, I’m not incapacitated.”
“Oh I know you’re not, and you’re a more than capable attending, but you’re carrying my unborn niece or nephew, so I’m not just big brother Will, but Uncle Will too, gotta keep two eyes out for you now,” he stated, gesturing at the round bump that was protruding underneath her ED scrubs.
It seemed Baby Casey was already under the watchful gaze of their Uncle Will, not just their mommy and daddy.
Tumblr media
After a while longer up on the rooftop together, Charlotte found herself traveling down in the elevator with Will at her side. The two of them were not short on conversation topics as they traveled down the hospital building floor by floor.
“—I can’t believe he actually said that to you!” exclaimed Will angrily as the elevator stopped on the cardiothoracic floor. “You’re Noah’s superior.”
Charlotte shook her head, as neither could she when it happened. “He completely ignored my instructions and advice,” she stated wearily, remembering the interaction between herself and Noah Sexton, who was a resident in the department. “I think Connor is going to talk to Goodwin about it, he had to take the poor guy up to surgery to repair the mess.”
“Good, I’ll make sure to talk to him later about it,” scowled Will as the elevator started to move again. “You don’t need idiotic residents, especially now.”
Charlotte sighed in agreement. She didn’t need the added pressure and stress of someone like Noah Sexton working under her. With her pregnancy, it had been paramount to her and Matt that she stay as relaxed as possible, even in a stressful job (although he also had a stressful job too). Their baby would always come first. “Just don’t make a big deal out of it, Will. I’m off for maternity leave in December and then off for a few months. Maybe when I come back he’ll be off to some other hospital!”
“Fingers crossed, but I’ll say something to April,” stated Will, as he glanced at his sister worriedly. He knew their nurse friend would happily pull up her younger brother about his behavior and actions last night.
“Is she working today?” asked Charlotte as she felt the elevator move without stopping. It seemed not very many people were using the lift this morning.
Will nodded. “Maggie said so,” he replied as they finally reached the first floor and were met with the emergency department before them as the doors opened up. “So what are you going to be up to today?”
Charlotte shrugged her shoulders as the two doctors walked across the room. Much like she had thought before, it seemed like it was going to be a quiet day in Chicago. “Probably just napping and organizing baby things, Matt is on shift today,” she told her brother.
Will hummed as he held open the glass door to the doctors’ lounge for his sister to walk through before him.
“Maybe you could go visit Pop?”

“Get to Med… Jay’s been shot.”
As she waits in the waiting room at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, the sound of her sergeant’s words echoes in her ears. Her heart is racing, her knee is bouncing, her hands are trembling, and dried up tear streaks run down her face. She feels like she’s been sitting in the room for an eternity, waiting for any news about her husband’s condition. He was already in surgery by the time she got at the hospital, which was a little more than two hours ago.
“Y/N!” she hears her partner, Kim Burgess, call out as she approaches her. When the brunette reaches her, she embraces her tightly.
After Jay and Y/N revealed their relationship to Voight, the two women became partners. They’ve been like sisters since they went through the academy together, and they got even closer after Y/N and Hailey Upton were transferred to Intelligence after Erin Lindsey left.
“Has there been any news?”
“I haven’t heard anything; Will just went to see if he can get an update,” she says before breaking down again. “I can’t lose him, Kim,” she cries into the shoulder of her best friend. “I can’t do it without him. We just got married. I can’t be without him.”
“Jay’s strong; he’ll get through this,” Kim reassures her as she rubs her back and squeezes her even tighter; it crushes her heart to see her best friend and chosen sister like this.
“Did you get the person who shot him?” she says, pulling away from Kim and angrily wiping away the fresh set of tears that are falling.  The anger in eyes and voice wasn’t intended for her partner, or Adam who had been with Jay at the time of the shooting, or the rest of their team but at the guy who fired the gun at her husband and shot him. She begged Hank to give her five minutes with the person when they apprehended him, but Hank ordered her to stay at the hospital because that’s where she needed to be the most and swore he wouldn’t go easy with the guy.
Kim replies, moving to sit in the chair next to the one she was in, “He’s in custody. Voight’s making his life a living hell, I’m sure of it.”
She sits back down next to her and asks, “How’s Ruz?”
“He’s blaming himself,” Kim replies. “He’ll be here when he’s cleaned himself up, and the others will be here after they’ve finished with the interrogation.”
She nods, letting Kim know she heard her.
Minutes pass as they sit in quiet, Kim holding her hand and reminding her that she is not alone. Will eventually returns and informs her that there haven’t been any updates just yet before he leaves once more to grab them all some coffee.
Just as Will comes back with Adam following behind him, the surgeon walks into the waiting room.
As he approaches, Y/N and Kim get to their feet. As the doctor begins to talk, Will moves to stand next to his sister-in-law. “Surgery went smoothly. We removed the bullet, stopped the bleeding, and repaired the damage the bullet caused. Jay will make a full recovery, but he will need to take it easy for some time.”
Y/N exhales with relief, “I’ll make sure he does. Can we see him?”
“Two at a time,” the doctor says with a nod.
“Adam and I will go update everyone,” Kim says to her and Will before exiting the waiting room with Adam.
The doctor leads Will and Y/N to the room where Jay has been moved. Jay opens his eyes and looks sleepily at his wife and brother as soon as they enter the room.
“Oh, baby,” Y/N breathes as she walks over to his bed and takes his hand in hers, looking at him with tenderness. “Please don’t put me through that again.”
“I can’t make any promises,” he says drowsily with a small smile. He raises her hand and kisses the back of it.
“How are you feeling?” Will asks as he stands beside Y/N.
Jay jokes with a slight smirk on his lips, “Like I was shot.
Y/N scowls at him, not in the mood for jokes right now, and says, "Don’t joke.”
“You love me, and you know it,” he gives her a small smile letting her know he’s teasing her.
“I need to get back to work, but I’ll stop by after my shift,” Will tells his brother, stopping Y/N from that is retaliating. “I’ll make sure to bring you some decent food.”
“Thank you, Will,” she says as he exits the room. Looking back at her husband, she sits on the edge of the hospital bed, clutching his hand on her lap. “I was so scared I would lose you.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he assures her. “We still have a lot to do together.”
She leans down and gives him a soft kiss while whispering, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he replies as he kisses her again. “Now, come lie down with me.”
“You’ve just gotten out of surgery. I don’t want to cause you more pain.”
“They’ve got me on the good stuff, honey, and after what I just went through, all I want to do is hold my wife and remind her that us Halstead’s aren’t easy to take down,” he says and pulls her close to him, moving them so she can lay down beside him.
With his arm across her shoulders and her head on his, he presses a kiss to her forehead and whispers, “I promised you forever. I’m keeping that promise.”

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
Tumblr media
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
“I told you I have sworn off men”, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalie’s try to play matchmaker. “They’re trouble. I don’t need that in my life right now.”
“Hey!” Will send you a look, though you knew he wasn’t mad. “She’s not wrong though”, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. “I mean it though”, you said directed at Natalie. “I just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.”
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. “Cheers to that!” April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. “I’m going to get another drink. Anyone want something?” They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicago’s bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldn’t find anything.
The people who sat with him didn’t look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didn’t meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someone’s eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stella’s gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
“What was that?”, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
“I don’t know.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “Can we just forget it ever happened?”
Stella’s face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. “Yeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.”
You exhaled, pinching your nose. “Thank you for the drink.” You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” “Yeah?”, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didn’t share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didn’t, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadn’t come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
“We have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.” Your eyes widened. “Why didn’t they come with an ambulance?”, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. “Cops. You know how they are.”
Actually, you didn’t. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadn’t considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
“Hi, I’m doctor (y/l/n) and you are?” You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. “Shouldn’t it say my name on your tablet?”
He didn’t sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. “Right. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.”
You didn’t see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. “So your name is Jay Hal-” “Halstead”, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. “You’re Will’s brother.” The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. “Have you considered becoming a detective?”
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. “So-”, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, cop’s eyes, and stood a little straighter.
“You were watching me at Mollys.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didn’t show.
“I was not watching you”, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. “I just thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now it makes sense.”
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
“I don’t think that’s the whole truth.”
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. “It definitely was.”
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t buy it.”
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldn’t give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. “So, Mr. Halstead”, you began. “Jay is fine.” You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. “Jay, you’re here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?”
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. “And you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, don’t you think?”
He raised one brow at your question. “It’s just a graze. I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my boss.” He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
“Seems like your boss is a lot smarter than you”, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. “You’re new here, right? At least I’ve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?”
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didn’t know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
“Only to the ones I like best”, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didn’t move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didn’t know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
“It’s just a graze shot”, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say “told you”.
“But you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, don’t lift too heavy with it…I think you know.”
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. “Does that happen often?” He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. “I mean, you- getting shot on the job.”
“Are you asking if I come here often?” His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. “Forget it”, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
“I am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then you’re free to go.”
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jay’s voice behind you. “Wait.”
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
“I’m with the Intelligence”, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didn’t. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. “We’re…very involved in the City.”
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. “You mean with the gangs?”
Jay shifted. “Voight, my boss, he can be very- intense.”
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldn’t pry at. “And you’re okay with it? I mean- you’re just so…casual about this.”
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. “Before I worked for the CPD I was in the army. I’ve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.”
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. “Sounds like I will be seeing you here often then.” You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. “Don’t get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.” “As you should.”
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. “Stay safe out there.” Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
“I don’t even know your name.”
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didn’t want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldn’t let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
“You’re a detective, figure it out.”
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didn’t feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldn’t mind. The type of man that didn’t get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
“I could just ask my brother, you know.”
You shrugged, unimpressed. “If that lets you sleep at night, sure.”
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
“You didn’t tell me you have a brother!” “What?” Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldn’t wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadn’t been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a brother?” You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Will’s full attention now. “You didn’t tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.”
“That’s different.” You shook your head. “And I did tell you. So…?”
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I didn’t think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?”
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadn’t thought that maybe Jay didn’t want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?“
"He was. He is fine though.” You kept your words vague, aware that you weren’t allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. “That idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.” He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
“You didn’t get it from me”, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to mention you.”
“Oh.” You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
“So you met Jay.” He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldn’t figure out why. “I did.” You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. “I bet he’s the younger one.”
“He is, yeah.”
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. “So I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.”
“Right.” Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. “Did something happen between you and my brother?”
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? “I told you I’ve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.”
You wished the last part didn’t sound like it came straight from a five year old’s mouth, but it was too late to take back.
“Trust me, I know that.” Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadn’t shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
“You haven’t gone out with us in weeks!” Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girl’s night out. “Stella won’t be working today, so it’s our chance to spend the night as just us girls.”
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasn’t wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
“Urgh, fine”, you groaned. “But you’re paying my first drink.” You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. “Deal.” “Now get your ass over here!” It was Stella’s voice in the background and you chuckled. “You are the worst!”
“And you love us anyway”, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadn’t thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Molly’s that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
“You came!” Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
“Hey”, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. “Wow, girl you look stunning!” Stella’s eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
“A little quieter, please?”, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. “Looking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!”
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. “I told her not to make a scene, but she wouldn’t listen. You know how she is!”
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. “I did not make a scene. And I’m standing right here, you know?”
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. “You know me so well”, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
“I got you, girl!” Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. “I think I’m going to head home”, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. “Early shift tomorrow?”, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
“You’re way too selfless, taking on all these extra shifts”, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. “I’m the new one, so it’s fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and it’s not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didn’t really have time to look for anything else.”
“See? That’s exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!” You smiled at Stella’s enthusiasm. “It’s not like it won’t be here tomorrow. I’m planning on staying here, so there’s plenty of time to get to know it all.”
Sylvie offered you a smile. “I’m glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.”
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
“It already kind of does”, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
“We should do this more often”, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. “That’s what I said!” Stella nodded.
“And I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!” Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure. Just text me and we’ll find something.”
“And you’re sure you can’t stay longer?”
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the day’s work. “Next time. But you two have fun and don’t drink too much”, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicago’s cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadn’t thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicago’s harsh winters wasn’t something you hadn’t gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. “That was quite an entrance”, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Molly’s.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldn’t see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. “I didn’t know you were here.” You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
“I was with the unit”, he said and you turned your head towards him. “Are you here often?” He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. “I guess so, yeah. It’s the place where everyone comes.”
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. “But if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.” You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
“So bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?” You didn’t know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. “You make it sound like I’ve got issues.” “Do you? Have issues?” You were teasing and he smirked. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“I don’t think I have.” Even as you said it you knew your words couldn’t be farer from the truth. Hadn’t your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you weren’t ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
“So what led you here to Chicago?” His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
“There were some…things I needed to leave behind.” It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadn’t shared many details.
Jay didn’t ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. “Why Chicago?” You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.”
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
“But you’re not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.” The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. “What gave it away?”
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. “Maybe the way you always look over your shoulder-” You inhaled. Was that really something you did? “-or that you’re nervous around me, a cop.”
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. “I’m not nervous around you”, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
“How is your arm by the way?” You weren’t interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
“It’s good. Voight’s keeping me at a leash, make sure I’m 100% before I get into the field again.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
“Sounds reasonable to me.” “Yeah.” Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you weren’t the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. “That’s my ride.”
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
“You know the guy?”, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. “But he’s my ride. See-” you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
“Yeah, no, you’re not climbing into that car”, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. “Wait, what?”
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldn’t hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
“What the hell was that?”, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. “You’re new in Chicago, right?” You didn’t say anything, knowing it was a question he didn’t expect an answer to.
“You should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.”
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. “It was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.”
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. “Well, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicago’s not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.”
You didn’t know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadn’t stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
“So how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.”
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. “You can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.”
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. “Now that’s a deal I can’t decline”, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
“But for real, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.”
“It wouldn’t be a problem if we went together.”
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. “You mean a date?”
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. “You can pay me back for saving your ass twice.”
“Twice?”
“Getting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.”
Smooth. You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped you. “Does that work with every woman you’re trying to impress?”
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
“I wouldn’t know. And who says I’m trying to impress you?”
“Maybe because of this whole I’m-a-cop-and-I’m-so-tough-thing.”
Now it was Jay’s turn to chuckle. “That’s not just a thing. So, what are you saying?”
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadn’t you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldn’t deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
“Maybe.”
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. “I can work with that.”

Hi! Can you write an imagine for Blake Gallo, with the prompt “I tried to move on, but nobody is you”
Blake Gallo- Nobody Is You
Tumblr media
Blake and YN had a whirl wind relationship. They met when Blake joined firehouse 51 and immediately they clicked. When YN got injured during a call and was told she could no longer be a firefighter she went a bit crazy. That was her life, now what was she going to do? This took a huge strain on her relationship with Blake and eventually YN broke up with him in fear that one day they would do nothing be argue with each other, and potentially start to hate one another.
Since YN’s accident she’s been trying to find herself again, trying to figure out what job she wanted to do and eventually settled on becoming nurse. Now she was in training, having to do placement at Gaffney Chicago Medical Centre.
YN sighs getting home to her apartment after a long day when she sees someone stood outside her door. Kelly Severide. Her best friend. Frowning wondering why he’s here, YN makes her way over to him
“Kel?”
“YN. You need to speak to Gallo”
“Kel it’s been 4 months since we broke up”
“I know but… he’s not himself. He’s making mistakes, he’s sad all the time. I’m not saying get back with him, but I think you both need to talk to each other”
“I don’t know Kelly. You weren’t there when we split up. You didn’t see his face when I…” YN’s voice trails off as she looks down at her feet
“Please just talk to him for both your sakes” with that Severide leaves YN stood outside her front door with her thoughts.
Over the next few days Severide’s words stick in YN’s head. So much so that she gives in and heads to Blakes apartment. Hesitantly YN knocks on his door. When Blake doesn’t answer right away, YN turns to leave thinking that this was a mistake. Before she could actually leave though, Blake opens his door with a confused expression
“YN? What are you doing here?”
“Erm Kelly said you weren’t doing so good. Told me to talk to you, but i wasn’t sure….”
“If I wanted to see you?”
“Yeah” YN breathes out now looking at Blake
“Do.. do you want to come in?”
“Errrm ok, yeah” YN walks into the apartment that she was once very familiar with. Awkwardly silent they sat down on the couch next to one another “so erm how have you been?”
“Honestly? Not good. I miss you and I still don’t understand why we broke up. I know the accident was hard on you but I don’t understand why we had to brake up”
“I was jealous I guess. Jealous that you got to go to work at the firehouse everyday, while I sat at home recovering from a broken back having to also deal with knowing that I’ll never be able to work as a firefighter again”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” YN just shrugs in response, not really knowing why herself “I wish you had told me”
“And then what? Leave the firehouse because your girlfriend fucked here back?”
“I would have helped you through that. I would have took time off, taken you to therapy sessions, gone to couples therapy with you. I would have done anything for you, but instead you left me and then I find out your sleeping around. That hurt YN”
“I wasn’t… I didn’t…. I went on a couple dates, but I wasn’t sleeping around. I still loved you. Still love you”
“I still love you too. I tried to move on, but nobody is you”
“So what now?” YN asks
“Why don’t we start over. Hi I’m Blake Gallo” Blake holds his hand out for YN to take. YN laughs at Blake’s cute smile taking his hand in hers
“Hi I’m YN YLN” they shake hands laughing before Blake pulls YN in for a hug
“Don’t ever leave me again”
“I won’t”

What we should get....
Will thought through the conversation with Sabeena and it was like he immediately was pulled into an out of body experience. In front of him he could see two paths, one where he made the best of his current options, continuing with Verani and going into medical research and pharmaceutical panels and another where he cut his losses completely.
It was like he could see everything clearly. He was stood there in his shit shoe box of an apartment, but he could see the hospital. His friendship with Maggie had changed since she'd got with Ben, him and Natalie were over, she clearly had no problem with Crockett telling him to back off even though he was just there for Carol as nothing more than a family friend. And yeah he and April were becoming good friends whilst she worked with him but it wasn't enough.
His mind spun some more. Natalie no matter what always put him second, or third. He couldn't do right for doing wrong. Choi could have killed a patient whilst under the influence of post op drugs, collapsed in the ED and he doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. Will risks his career to save patients and he is always threatened with his medical licence.
Was this why he became a doctor? Was all of this really worth it? Was this what his life would be like for the next 20 years? Him being tarnished for his past poor decisions whilst everyone around him get theirs glossed over to save their reputation?
He came back to himself, in his shitty kitchen, in his shitty apartment he could barely afford. He was moving before he could really think. He picked up his phone, and didnt have to scroll too far down before he got to the name he wanted.
Hey Con, we've not spoken in a while, I hope you're okay. I'm leaving Chicago, mind if I come visit?
He then power walked to his laptop and booted it up. He opened his email as fast as he could and clicked to write a new one.
To Ms. Goodwin,
This email is to inform you that I am hereby resigning from my position as attending in the ED in Gaffney Chicago Med. I will carry out my month's notice if absolutely necessary however I hope to take my leave affective immediately, like many others before me have been allowed to do. I have realised how this job and place is not for me anymore. Thank you for your support through the years.
Regards,
Dr Will Halstead.
He sends the email without a second thought, and a few seconds later his phone pings with a reply from Connor.
Leaving leaving? Everything ok? And yeah man, come out whenever, you know where I live.
-
Thanks man, Will types, yeah. Long story short, I need a change. I'll tell you more when I get there and I'll let you know when I can leave.
-
Connor replies almost immediately Been there, done that, wearing the t-shirt. It'll be good to see you.
-
Will imagines a different future, with sunshine and a beach and maybe a friend at the end of the day not too far away. He has no idea if he'll remain a doctor, he has no idea how Jay will react when he tells him, but life like this couldn't continue and there was nothing really keeping him in Chicago anymore.
It'll be good to see you too. He replies back, and then sits down, phone thrown down onto the couch slouches against the back of it fully, and feels like he can breathe properly for the first time in a long time.

Could you write one for Chicago Med where whoever your OC is/reader (idk what you write for🤣) gets sick/injured and has to come into the hospital and tries to avoid someone specific? Whoever they avoid is up to you!
First, I want to remind everyone that you should not wait to see a doctor if you're in pain. Stay safe, you all <3
•-•-•-•-•-•-•
“This is stupid”, you grumbled. The heat of your words was taken out by the gasp of pain that followed. “I don’t need a hospital.”
Your best friend gave you a look and rolled his eyes. “Sure” he drawled out, half-dragging you through the doors to Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. “Remind me again which one of us is going to be the nurse in a few months?
“What… has that… have to do with… anything?”
Despite the fact that you were sweating and panting, you forced your head to turn left and right, eyes taking in the lobby of the emergency department for any familiar faces.
“I’m not going to let you burst your appendix because you're too stubborn!” Then, much to your horror he raised his voice. “Anyone give me a hand?”
You hissed. “Stop it!” Your eyes frantically moved around the room. You could see Ethani and Maggie in one of the rooms. “Look, I’ll let you take me… to any other hospital – Ow, fuck!”
You breathed in sharply, the curse leaving your mouth as there was a sharp jolt of pain in your stomach.
“Y/N?”
That concerned voice you’d recognize anywhere. Your friend did too as he quickly spun you two around – his arm at your waist being the only thing keeping you upright.
“Hi, Will”, you grasped out.
“What’s wrong? What happened?” The questions came out like rapid fire, his eyes darting between you and your friend, demanding answers even when he was already closing the gap between you.
“Nothing’s wrong”, you managed to push through.
“Stomach pain”, your friend – unhelpfully, you might add – supplied to your brother earning an elbow to his side from you. That didn’t stop him, “I think it’s the appendix.”
Will’s frown deepened at your friend’s words as his hand came in contact with the clammy and hot skin of your forehead. You met his searching gaze with a feverish and fearful look of your own. Will knew why.
“It might be just a bad case of stomach flu”, he said, trying to soothe you.
You swallowed against the tickle in the back of your throat, willing your eyes to stop welling up despite the burning in your tear ducts.
Will took your hand in his and squeezed, before pulling you to his side, taking your weight off of your friend who looked confused.
“Stomach flu? Are you sure, the symptoms–”
“It can’t be the appendix”, Will stopped your friend. He started helping you move, calling out for April who was passing by and asking if there was an empty bed. April nodded, concern etching to her features as she recognised you.
“What?” Your friend asked, quickly catching up with you.
“It was taken out when I was fourteen”, you replied through gritted teeth and then yelped as Will helped you down on a bed the movement agitating the hurting spot in your stomach.
“Sorry, sorry”, Will said, grabbing your hand and giving it a quick kiss. “We’ll find out what’s wrong, Bean, I promise.”
“I tried to avoid you”, you said quietly, tightening your grip on his hand. You weren’t sure if you were talking about coming to the hospital right now, or about this morning when you had locked yourself to your room until Will left for work despite his attempts to get you eat breakfast with him.
“Your stomach already hurt this morning, didn’t it?” Will asked, a hint of anger fueled by frustration clear behind the dominant worry for you.
The guilty look on your face was enough of a confirmation for him.
You wiped at your eyes with a shaky hand. “I’m scared”, you admitted. “Doesn’t feel like a stomach flu, Will.”
“You let me be the judge of that, alright, Bean?” Will said, giving your shoulder a squeeze. “We’ll find out what’s wrong and we’ll fix it.”
There was a finality in his words. Enough that you didn’t argue against his words even if you knew that not everything could be fixed. You just hoped that wasn’t the case this time.

WHAT IF… the Halstead brothers had a baby sister?
Yep, I’m here to post about it. I’m a HUGE One Chicago fan, and OF COURSE my favorite characters are the Halstead brothers.
I just have to make somethings clear:
I DON’T OWN ONE CHICAGO OR THE CHARACTERS (if I did, I would’ve changed soooooo many things)!! The ONLY character I DO OWN is my OC (the baby sister).
I DID NOT GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL (some of the medical info (if not all of it) comes from google search, please, have patience with me)
My OC’s 2 years younger than Jay, and 4 years younger than Wil (we never know how old the brothers are, so… I’m taking some liberties here).
This is kind of like a “self insert” fanfic, please, PLEASE if you DON’T LIKE IT, LEAVE, (don’t send hate my way)
Who’s my OC? Well…
Meet DR. LILLIAN MARIANNE HALSTEAD!
Tumblr media
She’s my OC, she’s an Emergency Medicine Physician at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. You’ll all get to know her along the way.
(The art was made with ChatGPT, I’m no artist in that sense, please don’t kill me!!)
I hope you really enjoy reading this story, as much as I’m enjoying writing it.

marlowe craford - i'll publish a longer temporary bio soon, but the cliffnotes. tw accidental death, tw drowning, tw foster system, tw abuse.
Marlowe is the younger sister of Mackenzie Crawford and they are both er nurses at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.
Growing up, their parents were friendly with the Cornelius and Elizabeth Rhodes, leading to the girls being friends with their children. Particularly, Mackenzie and Connor were close friends.
They lost their parents to drowning during a boating accident at their lakehouse on Lake Michigan outside of Chicago. Mackenzie was a few months shy of 18 and Marlowe was 13.
Connor begged his dad to take them in and Cornelius seemingly agreed but then only took in Mackenzie because he didn't have interest in raising Marlowe for 5 more years.
Marlowe entered the foster system and the first family she was placed with relocated to Florida. They then got pregnant on their own and dropped the foster kids.
As a ward of Florida, Marlowe was placed into an abusive foster home.
With the help of Cornelius, Mackenzie was able to petition for custody of her sister, eased by her current foster home ending in a high profile assault case. Cornelius tells Mackenzie after she gains custody that she can now focus on paying him back for her lawyer and start making her own way.
After watching her sister work herself ragged to pay back her debt, Marlowe insists that her sister stops putting her life on hold for her and encourages her to go to nursing school with her at UIC.

Kiss Prompts
Tumblr media
You knew Will would’ve gained a lot of attention at work and out in public. How could he not? He was downright handsome. You knew you shouldn’t feel jealous because you had him all to yourself. You are his best friend and girlfriend and you couldn’t have asked for anything else. You had grown up with the Halstead brothers so you had known them your whole life and had to watch Will go from girlfriend to girlfriend and it killed you but you supported him and was there for him when a breakup happened. When he went off to med school you went with him and it was the best decision ever. Again, you had to watch him go through what he did when he was younger but in your last year of college you both confessed your feelings to one another and had begun dating. He was very loyal and so were you but the jealousy was still there when girls would flirt with him and if he was drinking, he would flirt back and you knew it didn’t mean anything but it still hurt.
You were lucky to be able to go where he went. Now you both were at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and you were loving it. Along the way you met some amazing people and you were proud to call them your friends, one of those people being Connor Rhodes. There was one person that you had butted heads with and that was Natalie Manning. She had taken a liking to Will and as many times he had assured you that nothing would ever happen and he wasn’t going to leave you and that he loved you, you were still jealous and on edge.
When you and Will had moved to Chicago you both had gotten an apartment together which made it easier in the long run but now you were wishing you had gotten one of your own. Lately he had been being secretive, coming home late, avoiding you at work, and to add salt to the wound he has been spending time with Natalie. It really has started to put a strain on your long-term relationship. It was getting to you so much you were considering switching shifts to avoid him and Natalie or take on double shifts. To add onto this stress of Will possibly cheating, you had also been feeling sick and just off which you just chalked it up to being stressed but boy were you wrong.
The alarm went off bright and early and it had both you and Will waking up. You had ended up on your side during the night and he rolled over and spooned you “Good morning, Baby.” He said in a sweet gruff voice that you loved oh so much but now it just brought tears to your eyes. A sniffle escaped you before you could answer and that had Will sitting up “Are you ok?” He asked and you wiped your eyes with the back of your hand and nodded.
“Yea, just fine.” You said and turned to look at him with a smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes and he frowned.
“Are you sure?” He asked and you nodded and started to get up.
“Yea, I’m fine. I’m working a double tonight.” You told him while you started to get ready for work.
“Oh? When did you find this out?” He asked, walking in as you spit the toothpaste out and you looked up at him in the mirror.
“When I asked Goodwin.” You said and wiped your mouth and moved into the bedroom and started to get dressed in your scrubs.
“What made you pick up a double shift?” He asked, having brushed his teeth and started getting ready and you shrugged.
“Just felt like I need it and the hospital has been understaffed.” You said and when you were done getting dressed you turned to look at him. “I’m gonna start getting things ready to go and then I leave.” You said and walked over and kissed him but it just felt forced. You were out of the bedroom and into the kitchen before he could respond. When he walked into the kitchen you were already gone and breakfast along with coffee was waiting there for him. He sighed to himself but he pulled out the ring that was in his bag and looked at it and couldn’t wait to get it on your finger. You arrived at work and put your things in the locker room and headed greeting Maggie “Good morning.” You said and she looked at you and you looked back at her with a smile and she could something was wrong.
“Ok, what’s up?” She asked and you shook your head.
“Why would you think something is wrong?” You asked as you took the tablet that she handed to you.
“Your smile doesn’t reach your eyes. You didn’t come in with Will.” She started and when she said Will’s name you cringed.
“Ok, so this is about Will.” She said and you looked at her silently confirming it. “What’s up?” She asked, turning her full attention to you.
“I think he’s been cheating on me with Dr. Manning and I’ve been so stressed about it that it’s starting to make me sick.” You said with a sigh.
“What? He absolutely adores you. Just saying your name lights him up.” She said “Speaking of Will, here he comes.” She said looking at him look around for you and when he saw you, he smiled but frowned when you didn’t even look up and he started to walk over.
“Hey.” He said and went to touch you but you flinched away.
“I gotta go.” You said and disappeared into a room and Maggie looked over to him.
“What did you do?” She asked and he looked at her confused.
“Nothing, that I know of.” He said and she glared at him.
“If I find out you did something like cheat on her. I will personally make your shifts a living hell and give you the worst cases that come in each time. Don’t test me.” She said and walked away leaving a confused Will alone.
Break time came around just as soon as you finished your last patient and you were exhausted, which had been happening more and more. You had just walked out of the cafeteria when you saw Will and Nataile talking but it was more just professional talk, they were leaned up close to each other and were smiling. Your stomach churned and all you wanted to do was throw up but rage filled you and what finally broke you was when they hugged. You stormed over there and when he looked up seeing you coming, he smiled but frowned when he saw the look on your face. “Y/N.” He said and Natalie was turning towards you.
“I can’t believe you. I can’t believe that you wasted all of these years and you go and cheat on me.” You said keeping your voice low but still loud enough “You know what? I’m done. I’m done making myself sick over this. We’re done. I don’t love you anymore. Natalie.” You turned to her “You can have him. Clearly my love for him wasn’t enough. I can’t believe I actually loved him.” You said and then stormed off with both of them calling your name but you just wanted to be gone from them and get to a bathroom. When you were far enough away you walked into the bathroom and into a stall and had just enough time to fall onto your knees and empty the contents out of your stomach. After a few minutes the door opened and the voice of Ava Baker was heard.
“Y/N? Are you ok?” She asked and you stood up and wiped your mouth and flushed the toilet.
“No, I’ve been so stressed about Will cheating, which I confirmed, that I’ve made myself sick and my period hasn’t come….” You trailed off.
“Oh, Honey.” She said and brought you into her arms but that didn’t last long because you were back on your news vomiting. She knelt down and rubbed your back “How long has this been going on?” She asked and you looked at her when you were done.
“A month.” You said and grabbed a piece of toilet paper and wiped your mouth and threw it into the toilet and flushed it.
“You’re pregnant.” She said and you looked at her with a crazy look on your face.
“No, I can’t be. It’s just stress.” You said and she smiled at you sadly.
“Let’s go get you checked out.” She said and helped you stand up and walk out of the bathroom and into a room. She made you lay down and pull your shirt up and grabbed the ultrasound and turned it on and put the wand to your stomach. Nobody spoke but when she got to the baby she stopped and smiled. “There is your baby. Looks like you’re a month along.” She said and you looked at the screen stunned. You were pregnant and you had just broken up with the father and now on your own. “You want a copy?” She asked and you nodded too stunned to speak. She froze the picture and printed out a copy and then gave you something to wipe off the gel.
“What am I going to do?” You asked, looking at her.
“Talk to Will.” She said and you nodded and she left the room after she gave you a reassuring pat on the leg. You sat there looking at the picture and tears formed in your eyes, you needed air. You walked out of the room and ran into Natalie but when she tried to speak to you, you just hurriedly walked past her and up to the roof. You don’t know how long you were out there freezing but it felt good. You heard the door open but you didn’t turn around until you felt something being slipped over your shoulders. You saw it was Will and knew you couldn’t get away.
“Baby, I’m not cheating on you.” He said and you turned your head looking out into the city.
“Could’ve fooled me.” You said and you heard him sigh.
“Kiss me and then tell me you don’t feel anything.” He said and you looked at him and kissed him and when your lips met it was like the first time all over again and sparks flew. All your worries melted away. All too soon it was gone because he pulled away. “Did you feel anything?” He asked and you nodded.
“It was like the first time we kissed.” You said “It still doesn’t explain why you cheated on me.” You said he shook his head.
“I didn’t. I was having Natalie help me pick out a ring.” He said and you looked at him stunned.
“What?” You asked and he smiled.
“I had this all planned out but now is as good a time as any.” He said and pulled out a box with a ring inside and got down on one knee. “Y/N Y/M/ Y/L/N, you have made me the happiest man alive and have since we were kids and I was stupid for not seeing it until our last year of med school. I wanna spend the rest of my life with you and start a family. You’re it for me. I’m sorry that I made you think I was cheating on you. Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?” He asked and you had tears streaming down your cheeks and you nodded.
“Of course. I would love to marry you and start a family with you.” You said and he smiled and slipped the ring on your finger and got up. “Starting a family is gonna happen a little earlier.” You said and now he looked confused and you pulled out the sonogram. “I’m pregnant.” You said with a smile.
“What? When did you find this out?” He asked, looking at it in awe.
“When I stormed away, I went to the bathroom to throw up and Ava came in and found me. She made me let her do an ultrasound. I’m a month a long.” You said he looked up at you and smiled then he was picking you and kissing you hard and then putting you down gently.
“Oh, Baby. This is amazing! I just got a super-hot fiancée and just learned she is pregnant with my child. I can’t wait to tell Jay.” He said and then bent down where he was in level with your stomach. “Hi there. I’m your daddy. I love you and your mommy so much. I can’t wait to meet you.” He said and kissed your stomach and you ran a hand through his hair as tears escaped. You couldn’t believe you were gonna throw all of this away but now you have the father of your unborn child back and you were engaged to him. You smiled because everything was gonna be just fine as long as you had your loving fiancée, the father of your unborn child, and love of your life with you.

No More Night Shifts
Working retail during the Christmas time was one of the most stressful things anyone can do. From the hustle and bustle of living in the city, to getting to work early and leaving late at night, to the freezing weather of the Chicago winter. It took a lunatic to agree to pull double shifts.
That crazy person just so happened to be (Y/N).
Her boss had asked her to fill in for a colleague that had come down with a very bad cold and could not make it in for her night shift. In the spur of the moment, she had said yes. But as she walked, the cold wind nipping at her skin, her feet sliding on the icy pavement, she contemplated returning home.
(Y/N) hated working the night shift at the store she worked in. Customers were rude, management always expected her to stay overtime without pay, and for some reason, she always got into some sort of accident when she was going back home.
And just as she had thought, the shift was a nightmare. She filled up her bad customer bingo. Which went something like this:
Mister ‘It doesn’t scan so I guess it’s free.”
Miss ‘My coupon is expired, but I’m gonna try to use it.”
The ‘You don’t mind using your employee for me, right?’ person.
The family excursion troop.
The no receipts returners.
And the people that think you’re a personal shopper.
By the time three in the morning rolled around, (Y/N) wanted nothing more than to collapse on the floor. Her whole body was sore and her eyes were tired from sleep. She cursed past her for agreeing to pick up that night shift.  She thought of being on her couch, a hot mug of tea in her hands, and bundled up with her thickest blanket with her boyfriend. She would be warm and comfortable, instead of absolutely miserable and cold.
But her daydreaming took a turn for the worst.
As she neared the bus stop, she didn’t notice the big puddle of sludge that had formed on the sidewalk. She slid on the pavement and her body collided with the frozen ground. One second she was walking and the other she was in the hospital.
***
In the Emergency Department of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, doctors and nurses were up to their necks with patients. With the weather going down, many people succumbed to the illnesses the cold temperatures brought. Cases of colds, flu, and pneumonia trickled in and out of the hospital at a fast pace. The ED was never empty.
“How’re we doing, Maggie?” Will Halstead asked the charge nurse of the department.
“Well, we keep filling beds as soon as one empties,” she sighed. “It looks like it’s gonna be a very long winter season. Although it looks like tonight might be slowing down. You going home yet?”
“I was just getting ready to do so,” he smiled tiredly. But the two were interrupted when the brick chirped. The doctor let out an exasperated sigh, knowing that his plans to finally lay down were just trampled. “Let me have it.”
“Incoming,” Maggie announced. “Trauma 1.”
“Talk to me,” Will told the paramedic as they walked in. That was before he took a good look at the patient.  “What happened?”
“Unconscious female, visible ankle fracture. Witness said she slid on ice and fell to the ground. She’s been in an out of consciousness. We have stabilized the right ankle with a splint and there is no sign of a spinal injury. The ID in her bag says her name is (Y/N) (Y/LN).”
“I know,” he breathed. “She’s my girlfriend.”
They all entered the room, other staff following suit. Tension built into the space as everyone noticed who it was. If they didn’t know (Y/N) personally, they knew of her and her involvement with the ED’s attending physician.
“Alright everyone, on my count,” he told the paramedics and nurses that would help transfer the woman from the gurney onto the hospital bed. “One, two, three.”
They all took hold of (Y/N)’s body, careful not to disrupt her ankle or any other injury she might’ve had. Behind them, Nurse Doris rolled in the X-Ray machine, handing Will and April a lead apron before she instructed the rest of the staff to exit the room, as well as the paramedics.
“So, it looks like it’s a bimalleolar fracture,” the doctor announced as the image came up on the screen. “Thankfully, the ankle is not dislocated so immobilizing it with a cast should do the trick.”
“Alright, I’ll get the kit.”
“Okay, let’s also get a full blood workup, and a head CT,” Will told April. “Now, pupillary response is good. Heartbeat is steady. She’s breathing on her own which is a good sign. Let’s start an IV drip with 2.5 mg of morphine…”
“Wait, Will, look,” she said. “She’s waking up.”
(Y/N)’s eyes started fluttering open, the bright lights worsening the headache she already had. Her whole body felt mangled and sore, and she was sure it was not from the long day at work.
“Hey, welcome back,” a voice said. “Can you tell us your name and where you are?”
“(Y/N) (Y/L/N) and I’m in a hospital because god doesn’t exist.”
When she finally opened her eyes, she suddenly did not mind that she was in the hospital. Before her, she was met with a handsome red-haired doctor. He smiled at her and she could feel butterflies forming in her stomach.
But her pleasantly surprised feelings quickly shifted to ones of embarrassment, when she noticed who it was.
“He-ey, doctor,” she stammered. “Funny running into you here.”
“Good to see your sense of humor wasn’t impaired,” he chuckled brightly. “Now, do you remember what happened?”
“I was walking to the bus stop to go back home when I slipped on a puddle of sludgy ice and now I’m here.”
“Okay. And other than your ankle and your head, does anything else hurt?”
“My pride,” she grumbled. “I told you, the night shift is cursed.”
“It sounds to me that you were distracted and you fell,” he laughed. “I don’t think there is any curse.”
“Yet you all believe people turn crazy because of the full moon.”
“Well, your memory seems to be okay. So, I’m gonna leave you with April so she can get your bloodwork to the lab,” Will told (Y/N), a kind smile on his face. His initial panic subsided when she woke up and recognized who they both were.
“Can you stay?” (Y/N) pleaded softly.
“I promise to be gentle,” April chuckled. If there was one thing she knew about her friend it was how desperately afraid of needles she was. “I’ll draw your blood really quickly and then I’ll sneak in the IV. How does that sound?”
“Like you’re gonna still gonna stick me with needles.”
“At least the pain in your ankle is gonna stop,” Will offered. But (Y/N)’s fear was still evident on her face. “Alright, just focus on me, babe. It’ll be over before you know it.”
“Just don’t let go of my hand.”
April quickly got to work as Will distracted (Y/N) with mindless chatter of what they would do during Christmas – spend the day in pjs, drink hot chocolate in front of the fire, and exchange gifts even though they told each other not to get presents. And before she knew it, the IV dripping pain medication into her system has started doing its job.
“There,” April announced, calling the couple’s attention. “We’re all done. I’ll be back soon to take you to the CT scan – for precaution -- and to bring your results. I’ll bring by the kit in a bit.”
“Thanks, April.”
The nurse smiled back at the couple in response, closing the curtains on them as she exited.
“So, what’s the verdict, doc? Am I gonna lose my leg?”
“Nah, just 9 to 12 weeks with a cast. You’ll have to come in a coupled of times to do x-rays, just to make sure the bone’s healing as it should,” Will explained. “But don’t worry, we don’t have to amputate.”
“Well, no late-night shifts for me in a while,” she joked. “Maybe that’s what I needed to break the curse, huh?”
“What?” he laughed. “Slipping on ice and spending your morning in the ED?”
“Hey, at least the doctor is cute,” she said before she placed a kiss on his lips.
“I’m just glad you’re okay, baby. It was pretty scary to see you unconscious on a stretcher like that.”
“Oh, don’t you worry, Halstead. It would take a lot more to bring me down.”
“Alright, (Y/L/N). Settle down,” he smiled at her. Will had been terrified that something worse would have happened, but if a little slip is the worst that could happen, he could live with that. “Take this as a little Christmas gift – you won’t have to work for some time.”
“NO NIGHT SHIFTS!” (Y/N) exclaimed excitedly. “It’s a Christmas miracle!”

omg wait also. knocking on the wrong door au + reesker pls 🥺❤️
“Connor if you don’t open this door in the next five seconds so help me God!” Ava yells, all but short of beating down the door. “It’s your own fault if you’re hungover from trying to impress that dermatologist at the bar!”
“This is supposed to be a medical conference, for intellectuals, not an opportunity to relive your frat boy days—”Ava is cut short by the sound of the door opening and greeted with the sight of a head of dark curly hair that most definitely does not belong to Connor.
“O-oh. Sarah. Sarah Reese, right? You were the psych resident back out in Chicago,” Ava recalls, taking in the sight of the woman before her, someone she had not seen in well over a year.
Ava remembers that last day. Dr Charles. Goodwin. The business surrounding Sarah’s father.
She’s slightly different now, Ava observes. More assured, somehow. At ease. Ava thinks she remembers hearing Sarah had taken a job at Baylor. She hopes it’s been good for her.
Sarah fixes Ava with a small, sad smile. “I was,” she nods in agreement. “I hear you’re looking for Connor?” She continues, more than ready to shift the topic of conversation away from her resignation and the circumstances that surrounded it. If the gossip mill back at Gaffney was anything like she remembered it to be, there must be at least seventy stories circulating about why she had left.
“I have a feeling that if what I heard is anything to go by, he may be a no-show.”
“You’re probably right,” Ava laughs. “Though maybe it’s for the best I knocked on the wrong door. Wouldn’t have found you, otherwise.”
“I’m not sure I’d call what you were doing knocking, but yes, there is that,” Sarah jokes, smiling warmly, reaching for her bag on the little hall table. “If you like, we can head down to the talk together?” Sarah cocks her head slightly to one side, a little surprised at herself for the suggestion.
“I’d like that,” Ava smiles. “And you can catch me up on what you’ve been up to this past year.”
