Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, by Gabrielle Zevin I really read this one ages ago, over #Ithacon weekend, while I spent the rest of my time demoing our games, playtesting a new game, and talking about game design. Such a strange feeling. #Tomorrowx3 is all about game design and creativity, what parts of ourselves come out in our games, and which parts of our relationships come out in games and game dev. The main characters are the right age for Oregon Trail memories, and there’s a running joke about the classic You Have Died of Dysentery. But this is more about friends riffing on a shared experience, this isn’t a novel of gamer references (I'm looking at you, Ready Player One). The games, real and imagined, exist to tell the story of creativity, friendship and love. Opinión: El final decae un poco comparado con el resto de la novela pero me ha gustado muchísimo. Una lectura muy recomendada que hace que te enamores de los videojuegos.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is one of those novels that popped up everywhere with everyone talking about it, and unless you’ve been off social media for a little while, I’m sure you must have heard the buzz. Initially, I wasn’t sure, I have to admit. It seemed like “just” a story about gamers and while I’ve enjoyed a computer game in the past (how old do I sound? 😂), I’ve never been seriously into it. ⁣ ⁣ Tomorrow x3 is so much more than it appears to be on the surface and I’m glad I gave it a chance. This is a love story, a friendship story and a remarkably original piece of work that kept a non-gamer like me completely hooked, despite the odd element of coding and game jargon that I confess sometimes went completely over my head. It didn’t matter. ⁣ ⁣ You see, it’s not really about the gaming. It’s the story of Sam and Sadie, best friends and gaming addicts who meet at a young age in less than ideal circumstances but bond over their love of computer games. A chance meeting later in life brings them back together and they create a game, Ichigo which becomes a worldwide phenomenon. This is the story of their friendship, who they fall in life with and how their undeniable bond is tested through their lives and by different people. ⁣ ⁣ This is a novel with so much heart and love poured into both the characters and the plot. The characters are so richly detailed and authentic that you’ll know them almost as well as you know yourself by the end of the book. There are several quiet, meandering moments where it feels as if the plot may have stalled but believe me, it’s a clever tactic by the author in preparation for a perfect storm. And when it hits? 🐉REVIEW RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read so far this year. With strongly written characters, as well as numerous themes and symbols to unpack, this is a great novel for bookclub discussions. This is a carefully crafted book with passages begging to be highlighted on every page. Zevin’s writing has evolved since A.J. Fickry and Young Jane Young. I enjoyed both, but Tomorrow has more intricate plotting and more sophisticated writing than those earlier works. The book, in large part, explores how we show love for each other when saying the words “I love you” don’t feel grand enough. The character of Marx shows his love simply by easing life’s journey for others, and I think that is one of the most amazing definitions of love I have ever read. If we were all capable of that kind of love, how wonderful this world would be. Another dominate theme is the question of how do you want to spend “the limited time of our very finite lives?” Do you devour the world - moving from each new thing to the next - in an attempt to experience it all? Or is happiness found by settling into a comfortable groove, choosing one course and keeping to the path? This is also a book about failure. Or rather, moving forward after failing. The video game analogy of multiple lives is used to great effect to illustrate the importance of failing upward. It’s ok to fail, just make sure to fail better the next time you try - get a little farther in the game than the last time. Move through failure like a gate and use the moment to pause and reinvent yourself as needed. This is a book I know will stick with me. I wanted to get this review up quickly after its release, so I haven’t yet taken the time to review all my notes. I’ll share more thoughts down the road if time permits. This book really put me through my feelings, in a good way. I picked it up because I saw the trailer for the upcoming movie and it really caught my attention. This book is well written and relatable. The characters are dealing with grief, loneliness, depression. Along with new found love and hope. At times, I was left in suspense and other times had a smile on my face while reading about a characters quirkiness or awkward interactions.
