Empire Of The Vampire - what can I say? This was a wild ride from the beginning to the very end and Jay Kristoff has proven he is a fantasy author of the highest calibre. I got to experience this book as a buddy read with the gorgeous @keeperofpages and even though this novel is epic both in length and in terms of the plot, the pages seemed to fly by as I became thoroughly immersed (and obsessed) with the story.⁣ ⁣ Kristoff’s world-building is second to none. He creates a land which has not seen a sunrise for twenty-seven years as the creatures of darkness i.e. the vampires are firmly in control and causing havoc and destruction. Hope comes in the form of Gabriel de León, a silver saint/member of a holy brotherhood determined to bring back the light and defeat the vampires in the hunt for humanity’s last hope - the Holy Grail.⁣ ⁣ This novel oozes Interview With A Vampire vibes at the beginning as Gabriel finds himself imprisoned by the monsters and is telling his story. Always a fan of a dual timeline, I loved the way in which the narrative slipped seamlessly between Gabriel telling the story and to his past. It’s an intense, exciting and chilling look at how he got to be in the position he is in now and the challenges and heartbreaks he has faced along the way.⁣ ⁣ Of course, we don’t get all the answers as this is the first book in a new series but we get more than enough reveals and surprises to whet the strongest appetite.
