Eu acordei no seu quarto na manhã de Natal, quando você enxugou minhas lágrimas, era tarde demais, em questão de segundos um filme passou na memória, dizem que isso antecede o final, o meu melhor nunca foi o suficiente, mas eu vi amor em meio ao caos, tudo que poderíamos ter sido,  nada pode estancar a ferida de um amor proibido, eu não consigo te curar pois ainda estou ferido, Eu sou o ator perfeito para suas noites vazias, e quando estou longe você me vê como um ídolo, porque minhas cicatrizes te assustam? Algumas delas você mesmo pintou com narcisismo,

Seu egoísmo é um buraco no peito, que nunca vai ser preenchido, Talvez te assuste saber que eu continuo vivo,  Estar vivo não significa viver, Você faria isso com ela? Eu sou só o alívio do teu desejo reprimido, Depois das onze ela vai partir, Meia noite você me faz promessas,  vejo estrelas queimarem no teto, Mas depois do calor, você fica frio, Eu nunca soube o que é um lar com amor, Dezembro sempre trás a melancolia, Mas na noite de Natal eu posso me sentar com a sua família? Eu estava preso naquele hospício quando sua mãe me chamou escondido, E na madrugada depois da ceia, você me deixa em casa, por alguns minutos pensei em pular nos teus braços, me segurei, mas você me puxou, estou preso num dejavu natalino, acho que entendi o significado de família, sei que isso não deve durar, mas eu prefiro contemplar as luzes que te ajudei a pendurar entre as persianas cinzas, te ver dormir, me faz esquecer suas mentiras,  talvez amanhã você minta que decorou para a Gabriela,

Não importa se tudo for uma ilusão,  De todo tempo que estive naquele lugar, essa foi a memória mais bonita,  passar a tarde de cueca jogando videogame, bêbados de vinho, chocolate branco e morango, discutir pra decidir um filme, dançar abraçado ao som daquele vinil antigo da Whitney Houston, O que há de tão errado em amar um menino? As horas passam como um leve suspiro, Todo ano é sempre igual,  Vocês são o casal ideal, Desfila com garotas por fama, mas por que sou eu que amanheço na sua cama? Algo foi real? The poems in The Boat that Brought Sadness into the World address #exile both literally and metaphorically. The book addresses the literal exile of the poems’ main speaker as well as the hard migrations of refugees. It discusses how exile might “swallow [one] whole” and the pain of #refugees, whom the speaker imagines long to see their homeland once more. Metaphorically, it looks at life as a #journey of and to exile. The book explores, for example, the journey from childhood through older ages and suggests that death is the ultimate exile as we leave the country of the body. These #poems are incantations that challenge, refuse, and accept loss and longing.

Eva Skrande is the author of three volumes of poems, including My Mother’s Cuba and Bone Argot along with the chapbook, The Gates of the Somnambulist. Her poems have appeared in Agni, The Iowa Review, Smartish Pace the American Poetry Review, and other journals. She has received fellowships from the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston, the Inprint Foundation, and the Houston Arts Council. She teaches for Writers in the Schools in Houston. Marco Santos has always carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. A renowned chef on a one way track to success, his career came to a screeching halt when Marco took the blame for a crime he didn't commit to protect his brother and ensure that Juan could be present in his newborn daughter's life. Marco served jail time for five years, but was released on good behavior. He's been back home for six months now and facing the possibility that his sacrifice might have been for nothing, but could cost him everything.

Marco’s mother died when he was pretty young. From that moment, his little brother, who was just two, pretty much became Marco’s responsibility. Their dad really struggled with providing for his sons on a single income, but when Marco was about 10 years old, he got a job that would finally allow him to make sure they were all comfortable, but would require him to travel a lot. So he sent Marco & Juan to go live with their grandparents in Briar Ridge. Shortly after moving to Briar Ridge, Marco met and befriended the girl next door. They became best friends and remained so for the rest of their childhood.

Marco worked really hard to be the best that he could be at… everything. He studied hard, practiced any and every sport he played as much as he could, even worked as hard as he could at being the best big brother. He wanted to make sure that by the time he graduated from high school, he would have several options to ensure he started making enough money to help his family out. But his brother didn’t have the same goals as Marco and after falling in with the wrong crowd when they were kids, continued on a downward spiral that kept getting him into bad shit

After graduating from high school, Marco managed to get a scholarship to a world famous culinary school in Orlando, Florida. His time in Orlando made him realize that cooking, and simply being in a restaurant environment, were his passion. The eldest Santos thrived while he was there. When he left, he asked the girl next door to keep an eye on Juan, and with the physical distance from constantly looking over his shoulder for his brother, he was finally able to focus and really thrived. When Marco graduated, he got a job working at a restaurant in Orlando. He planned on staying in the city, at least for a couple years and working his way up the ‘ladder’ so to speak. But after receiving a frantic call from his grandmother about how out of control Juan had gotten, Marco packed up his bags and moved back home, feeling like his brother had been and always would be his responsibility

Over the years, Marco has worked at different restaurants in Briar Ridge, until about 8 years ago, he finally got his big break and landed a job at Alvaro’s at Paradise Point Resort & Spa. Despite how bad things were with Juan, Marco’s professional life, at least, seemed to be doing pretty well. Then, things got turned upside down six years ago when Juan got one of his flings pregnant. From the moment his niece was born, Marco fell head over heels. Gabriela, named after Marco in a manipulative attempt to show how much Juan appreciated his older brother, became the single most important thing to him and for that first year she was alive, Marco took care of her just as much as Juan did.

Five years ago, things came crashing down when Marco caught his brother breaking into someone’s house in a wealthier part of town. With Juan already having several priors on his record, Marco went in after him to try to get him to leave, afraid of the repercussions his brother would face if he were caught. A silent alarm was triggered & before they knew it, the cops arrived. Not wanting his brother to miss out on all the time with his daughter, who was just a year old, Marco took the blame so his brother could escape & was arrested in his place. Because it was his first offense, Marco only received 7 years with a chance of getting out on good behavior. He got out after 5 and is now on the path to getting his life back, including trying to adopt his niece who he’s learned his brother basically abandoned after he went to jail.

This book is mostly told through two POVs - Kada and Sladyana - two mothers who will do anything for their children. Kada is a Vedma - a kind of witch who helps people in their day-to-day lives, as well as communing with the goddess Zemya. Her goal is to protect her daughter Secha at all costs - as her daughter will only be safe from the goddess claiming her as her own when she turns sixteen. Until then, she runs the risk of being captured by the Fox and given to the goddess Zemya - unless Kada can stop her, even if it means betraying everything she’s worked for.  Sladyana is a noblewoman whose daughter, Luba, went missing 15 years ago - taken by the same Fox hunting Secha. She has also adopted a four year old mute child named Tula. Sladyana is convinced Kada - the woman who helped her have her child years ago - knows something about what happened to her missing daughter. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get her back.  The conflict in this book is between these two mothers trying to do anything they can for their daughters. However, only one of them can have a truly happy ending - and she must bring suffering to the other to achieve it.  We might not agree with everything they do to achieve their goals - but we can understand them. There’s also a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming and recontextualizes what we thought we understood. I thought it was a really clever interpretation - as well as fitting into a common theme in folklore of hidden agendas and betrayals. Even with the creatures and magic present within the book, the conflicts feel real and grounded - and I was not expecting to be simultaneously rooting for both of the mothers at the end, regardless of what they had done beforehand.  This is a moving tale of motherhood and loss - and how far a mother will go for her child.
