sam is demon imagery and like. the evil one so to speak. imagery wise. but then they put him in a white suit when he’s lucifer, and lucifer talks about wanting to preserve the earth and god’s creation.

dean is angelic imagery (so to speak) and the Good One™️. the chosen one to be michael’s vessel. but. he’s wrath and vengeance and violence and lust. and all the things that are really more sinful (i.e seven deadly sins and stuff).

they both symbolise the two sides of the war (i.e the angels and the demons) but then. both sides want the same thing. demons (or, well, lucifer) want the world to be free of humans and be just its pure self, aka paradise. the angels want to just be done with all the war and reach paradise.

in a similar way, sam and dean constantly have the same intention, whether it be killing yellow eyes, killing lilith, killing lucifer. whatever. ultimately they always have the same goals but sam is always portrayed taking the “evil” route and dean always takes the “righteous” route.

ALSO. it’s really just parallel after parallel honestly. sam will be focused on the “evil” route thinking that it’s the right way but at the same time he has moral doubts between. like lucifer intending to destroy humanity but then some demons rebel and keep them alive (technically ruby? but not really).

dean will be focused on the “righteous” route, obviously thinking it’s the right way and shunning sam’s route because it’s “evil”, but he is the violent one and the ruthless one. like the angels smiting and killing those who are “evil” without remorse.

really at this point it feels like all we’ve got going is that the universe keeps pitting these two against each other and somehow they keep ending up together regardless.

spn is really just a show about how good and evil aren’t really good and evil, and they have to exist together for the world to function

How would the characters feel if the MC was religious? Would anyone either be interested or wary or uncomfortable?

And now I gotta talk about my girl, my best baby, the love of my life, my girlboss, my reason for existing: bella <3 i find her as a character soooo fascinating. as THE biggest lesbian you'll meat, usually i find strictly dominant characters a turn-off, especially male characters, but that's a personal thing ofc! that being said, bella is just .... *chef's kiss* she is 100% in control, but ... she's not cold. i almost would describe her as "warm," for she dazzles as the brightest light in every room, her flirting and smirks easily given away. but of course, that's her persona, how could we forget the murder plans hello??? BUT with the MC? those touches 👀 those feelings 👀 how can a woman be so cold yet so warm?

will we ever see our beloved bella in a submissive role? or the better question is: what does she consider to be a submissive role? like, I'm not even referring to the bedroom, would she allow the MC, either now or in some distant future, to take care of her—acts of service, physical touch, words of affirmation, etc. is her dominance an intrinsic part of her nature, or is it caused by her past trauma (because i know miss girl has a lot)? is it just one and the same? to her, is receiving love and affection the same as being submissive? because to me it sure isn't! 🤔 i think I'll stop this essay here lol, but just wanted to say i love your writing and the complexities of figuring out your place in life <333

You are right in thinking of Shakespeare for Caliban. Though, that character is far more dickish in the Tempest than what my inspiration is for him. I read a book in college called Prospero's Daughter. It is a phenomenal book that is a retelling of the Tempest. That was more of where the obsession for the name came.

As for the characters of the Night Market, they don't actually have any special meaning. The name Belladonna was rolling around my head for a while because I love the idea of a poisonous flower. But, it wasn't something I pulled from somewhere. Milo's true name does have meaning but that has only been mentioned once on a specific path in Book 2. Gabriel is a little bit of a nod to the more Christian angels but only loosely. Because I do associate the name Gabriel with a Supernatural character and the two of them are nothing alike. LOL

2. If the MC was religious, Milo and Malcolm would be wary as fuck. Milo's father was a very religious man and hid behind his religion. And Malcolm has seen a lot of duplicity in the world of religion before and has not had a lot of good experiences. Both would be incredibly hesitant to trust a religious MC. It doesn't mean they can't, it just might take time.

Gabriel would of course be on board, as long as it was to the Knowing. Another religion would cause him some turmoil due to the Knowing being the only true god in his mind.

Belladonna would be fine with it. She is an incredibly religious woman at heart and she would be open to a lot of discussions with it.

Hazel would be more curious than anything else. She would want to know why the MC believed and what it entailed. She may or may not agree.

Pen would just laugh.

3. So for Bella, I had a very specific idea in mind when I started her characterization. I want her in control and I want her to be someone who has her shit together, but I wanted it to stem from confidence. Not trauma. I think we see a lot of cold characters being cold due to their past shaping them into that. I wanted Bella to just know her self worth and go from there. Hence the warmth to her but the ability to ice out anyone that pisses her off.

Submission for Bella is complicated. I don't think she ever sees herself being submissive but she would use it to describe clients in the past. I don't think she would use it to describe MC. But, you will be able to see her in roles where she has to lean on someone else for help. It is not that Belladonna doesn't want to show that side to anyone. It is more that she assumes that she can take care of it. Even while sick, she believes herself above it all. That she can do this herself. When she can't, I think it comes as more of a shock to her.

But, for a romanced MC, there are some moments coming up that I think will speak of this. I am very excited to write them.

So we all love drawing parallels between the ineffable husbands and the other big ships, right?

Ineffable Husbands

Most of us imagine the mirror characters to be this, right?

Well that’s where I think we’re getting this wrong! I do agree with the vinylatte parallels, but as for ineffable bureaucracy? I have a different view. To me the parallels go more like this.

Okay so hear me out! I know it’s easy to draw comparisons because obviously the angel character will have more in common with another angel and vice versa for the demons. And that may be true on the surface. However! The more I think about these characters the more it makes sense to me.

Well start with the Crowley-Gabriel comparison, because I’ve seen this floating around a little more.

They have a good amount of traits in common.

Cold exterior, sharp language and mannerisms, secret soft side, all that good stuff. But what makes them so comparable to me is their impulsiveness. They (and Nina) tend to deal with their problems through schemes that aren’t entirely thought through and, most obviously, avoidance/escape. Crowley suggests multiple times that he and aziraphale run away together, and Gabriel’s grand plan for being with Beelzebub is to simply - literally - go to hell. (Nina’s example of avoidance is avoiding her feelings about Lindsay leaving her and her avoiding maggie so she doesn’t have to deal with any potential new feelings on top of those. This is a much less extreme version of how the dudes™️ handle things but then again vinylatte are really just the realistic balanced version of all the other idiots.) They’re not STUPID by any means, but they’re a lot more prone to an ‘act first, think later’ tactic. They also tend to show a lack of consideration about how anything they do to be with their chosen partner will affect the rest of the world. Crowley wants to go off with aziraphale and let the earth get blown to bits so long as they can be together and Gabriel leaves for hell not seeming to give much thought as to what will happen without him as supreme archangel. Gabriel’s plan also gives Crowley himself another chance to show his avoidance as his plan is to simply dump Gabriel somewhere. I love these dudes but they are, and I say this with love, a little silly.

Now to my favourite comparison! And no it’s not just because I’m delusional and think they’d be besties (though if you do wanna see that my fic Camp Armagetalong is full of my propaganda for that cause). It’s just genuinely such an interesting thought to me. In contrast to their respective partners, Aziraphale and Beelzebub are both a lot more strategic. More logical. To be quite blunt - they’re smarter about it. Aziraphale, while his hesitation may be frustrating, is correct in his judgements most of the time. He’s right that heaven and hell knowing about he and Crowley’s relationship would be dangerous and he’s right to try to cover it up for their safety despite how painful it may be. His plan when Gabriel shows up with his memory wiped is to figure out what happened and go from there.

In a similar vein, Beelzebub, while it may be less intentional, goes about trying to find Gabriel in a similar way. They ask the person they think is most likely to know where he is and when they get a lead they don’t simply go knocking down the door themself, they have an organised fleet breach the bookshop. Their gift to Gabriel also acts as a sort of backup plan to save him should his brashness get him in hot water - exactly what it does.

But above all the biggest similarity I see is that while Crowley and Gabriel deal with their problems by avoiding or simply destroying the issue, these two are fighters. These are people (beings?) who know what they want, face their issues head on and try to find ways to work through problems instead of jumping ship.

What happened to Gabriel? Time to investigate.

Someone’s being annoying? Either insult them right to their face or use the power of sarcasm! (Gabriel watch and learn. ‘Shut your stupid mouth and die’ is not as effective as an extremely bitchy glare.)

I can't help but wonder...

And I have a lot of feelings around "I forgive you" because, to me, it goes so much deeper than that.

I think we need to go back to the very first scene of season two.

Before the Beginning

Aziraphale is the first one to reach out. Yes, Crowley called him over for help, but Aziraphale is the one who introduced himself. Crowley wasn't expecting him to stick around for so long. He probably didn't think to introduce himself in return because, as he said in episode 6, angels are like bees (and the universe is huge).

When Crowley becomes upset at Aziraphale's explanation of people and Earth, Aziraphale is confused because "you can't just ask God this shit, how rude", but you see the look on his face when Crowley asks how much trouble he can get into for asking a few questions.

It was more than the fact that Aziraphale said something that made Crowley want to question God. He was looking at Crowley. He saw Crowley's wings become darker. It made him anxious, but why?

He was scared of Crowley getting into trouble, but why would he worry about that? What did it mean to him? How would he know? Why would he know? Had Aziraphale already been scolded for being curious?

And the thing he was scared of came true. Crowley got into trouble and he became one of the fallen.

"Unforgivable. That's what I am." (Unforgettable. That's what you are.)

As far as I can tell, Aziraphale never even learned Crowley's angel name (unless Crowley was so famous as an angel that he needed no introduction), but their chance meeting still changed the trajectory of both of their existences.

Why did Crowley fall? Why didn't Aziraphale?

It is something that weighs heavily on Aziraphale's mind. The name he goes by on Earth is A.Z. Fell, and the humans refer to him as Mr. Fell. He chose that name for himself.

He was unable to save Crowley from Hell in Edinburgh and it changed both of them once more. I've already talked about Edinburgh being Aziraphale's Greatest Failure™️ in this post a little bit, which feeds further into the guilt that Aziraphale probably feels when it comes to Crowley's status as a demon.

For 6,000 years, they have had to speak to each other in code.

"Unforgivable. That's what I am." (Unforgettable. That's what you are.)

I think when Aziraphale is saying "I forgive you" he is telling Crowley that it doesn't matter what Crowley does, Aziraphale is going to love him anyway.

Aziraphale can't say "I love you" though because Heaven is always watching. Hell is always watching. Someone is always watching. The last thing Aziraphale wants is for Crowley to suffer more than he already has, and that's where Aziraphale struggles the most.

But I also think that, deep down, Aziraphale is asking Crowley to forgive him. Aziraphale freely forgives because even though he's never fallen himself, he struggles with the guilt of what happened to Crowley. He sees Crowley's fall as unjust.

He tried to warn angel Crowley against the idea of making any suggestions because he feared what would happen.

He lost Crowley in Edinburgh because they had fallen into a pattern of role reversal and Crowley did a good deed in front of Gabriel's statue, which I've also discussed before.

Aziraphale is saying "I forgive you" the way humans say "I love you", and I think that deep down he wants to hear Crowley say "I forgive you too" because Aziraphale can't forgive himself for the part he believes he played in Crowley's fall.

The Metatron was watching when Aziraphale said "I forgive you". Aziraphale is already in enough trouble, which I have discussed before. Twice we have seen Aziraphale say "I forgive you" to Crowley, and both of those times were after Crowley insulted him.

"How can someone as clever as you be so stupid?" "You idiot, we could have been...us."

"I forgive you" is and always has been "I love you" in coded language because Aziraphale worries nonstop about Crowley getting into trouble with Hell (again). He's telling Crowley that no matter what he does, Aziraphale will always forgive Crowley because he loves Crowley.

I’m not going to tag this as a spoiler, since it’s from an interview, but I will put it under a cut for those who are avoiding media as well.

The Gizmodo interview made me rethink my parsing of the Argument™️ sneak peek.

I think we all took the Argument at pretty much face value - Crowley is angry about Gabriel being there, Aziraphale not having enough bastard in him to prioritize them, etc etc. Which is all probably true.

But in the Gizmodo interview, Pre-Fall Crowley sounds — well, he sounds like he was a bit of a dick. Even to Aziraphale.

And if that’s the case, the Eden interaction reads a lot differently, as many have noted. Aziraphale extends his wing, offering the shelter of Heaven to someone who thought they would never have that again. To someone who treated him poorly, and perhaps even Fell in part because he treated others in that way. And Crawley takes what is offered, and spends the next six millennia in a delicate dance with this interesting Angel on the wall.

So yes, Crowley is angry about Gabriel, but not solely because he’s Gabriel. And also exactly because he is.

He’s realizing that what he took for a unique, precious benediction — hell, an absolution of the past between them that allowed them to start anew on Earth — was a mundane blessing that Aziraphale would extend to anyone, no matter how they have wronged him.

It recontextualizes a very core tenet of their whole relationship for him. And how heartbreaking it must be to realize that this story you wholeheartedly believed in — of the moment which shaped your life, your choices, for the entire history of the world — is, essentially, a fairy tale.

So one thing we know about the second season of Good Omens is that it starts out with Gabriel showing up naked at Aziraphale’s bookshop. Another thing we know about the universe of Good Omens is that angels are sexless beings unless they specifically decide to Make An Effort™️

With this in mind. Gabriel, who has amnesia at this point, knows nothing of humans or mortal beings or anything, so this guy probably doesn’t even know what genitals are. Even if he did, I doubt he would do anything with the information. Anyways. Is this dude just ken-dolling it around London? Is that bettor or worse than if he wasn’t?

Hello! It's the Archangel anon again! I finally found the time to type out some "general" headcanons I have about the Archangels! Also, I'm sorry that even when trying to keep things short and sweet, I still ended up writing a damn novela🥲

Okay! A quick refresher first! Before he fell, Lucifer was an Archangel, along with his father (the Metatron) and his five siblings (Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Gabriel, and Zadkiel). We see, presumably, the other six Archangels during Lucifer's brief flashback in episode 5. I headcanon that the two angels with the biggest, most ornate halos are the Metatron (the leader of the Archangels) and Michael (the Metatron's second in command). The Metatron is on Lucifer's right, and Michael is on his left.

There! Nice and refreshed! Now for the others. The angel standing directly behind Lucifer, I feel, is Zadkiel. The angel on Michael's left is Uriel, and the one on his right is Gabriel. This means Raphael is the tall angel standing between Zadkiel and the Metatron.

Now for more detailed general headcanons. These are all a hodgepodge of actual attributes I found after researching the Archangels, along with ideas I liked and thought would work. To keep from going on and on about their personalities and stuff, I made lists of characters that reminded me of the siblings. Hopefully, that will give you a quicker idea of what I think these guys are like.

Michael (He/Him): Patron Archangel of Warriors (also chivalry, the sick, the poor, the suffering, and tradesmen ((grocers, bakers, fishermen, etc.))

And that's the six siblings down! All that's left is the Metatron. But, to be perfectly honest, that piece of work is gonna need an entirely separate ask dedicated solely to him. Plus, I have another separate headcanon ask about Gabriel that I desperately want to type out first. So I'll have to get back to you about Old Man Meta at a later date.

I will say this, though, out of all the shitty dads that exist within the Hellaverse, the Metatron is on a completely separate level all his own.

Oh! Also, he and Roo have MAJOR beef with each other. The Metatron and the Root of Evil go way, WAAAAAY back🙂

Also, everytime I see Metatron I read it as Megatron and I'm surprised by it each time. What are Transformers doing in the Bible. Hahah, but yeah, I didn't even know of the Metatron until "Good Omens." Very interesting that he and Roo have some beef that goes WAY back.

Out of the Woods

Okay I was so excited about this one!!! This is such a good one just because of the sheer amount of biblical allusions that fall within the idea of woods or forests. Like Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote an entire book about it, that is now used as torture for high schoolers. Like, forests are often seen as respite and peace from the daily noise and chaos, starting around like. The Industrial Revolution. when machines and stuff started ruining the environment. It’s the place you go that’s quiet enough that you can speak to God and shit like that, like you become in touch with your innermost self. However, BEFORE the industrial revolution (think Salem Witch Trials era), the forest was where you went to meet the devil. That’s where you signed his black book and became a witch and probably danced around naked and stuff idek. That’s probably exactly why Anathema lives in a cottage in the forest. So it’s a good start there.

I’m thinking that real first scene we see them together in, when they get roaring drunk about the impending apocalypse and from where they are now, armageddon was like. nothing compared to the shit going down now. in hindsight, it all seems so simple

First off, there’s a literal Polaroid of them But the real good stuff here is that this is arguably the time period that Aziraphale realized he actually liked Crowley, not in a like-like way but like a hey i’m more than fond of this guy he’s my best friend sort of way. Which means, it’s also the moment that Aziraphale starts to come to terms with the fact that he’s more ambiguous than other angels. Angels are good. White. Right? And Demons are evil. Black. But Aziraphale realizes that he isn’t just white. and Crowley isn’t just black. They’re ambiguous. Or, you could say, in screaming color…

So this is kind of a double entendre here because on the one hand, it’s the actually idiom of “out of the woods” meaning out of danger, which they basically spend every second since Adam was born in, even after armageddon doesn’t happen, so there’s that part of it. But also, like I said before the woods are this dichotomy of some higher power happening which leads me to-

So this could definitely be a reference to the moment they switch back into their right bodies and Crowley looks to see if anyone’s watching-which they aren’t- and says “all clear” (i think. something like that). But it also plays into this symbolism that the woods/forest are God and Satan, and therefore also the domains they epitomize- Heaven and Hell- and that to properly get out of danger, Crowley and Aziraphale have to leave the “woods” altogether- Leave Heaven and Hell. Which is exactly what Crowley has been trying to do

I mean. Come on.

They have that one fight where Crowley says he’s leaving and he’s taking all his stuff and going to Alpha Centuri. I don’t even know that’s just what I immediately thought of.

Okay this one is a little bit of a jump but i feel like it works so i’m using it anyway- just stay with me here. So we’ve established that the woods are Heaven and Hell and their stupidass inability to get along. If you really think about it though, it’s not Heaven™️ and Hell™️ that are keeping them apart. It’s not even God and Satan. It’s actually their bosses that don’t want them together- Gabriel and Beelzebub. They are then the monsters. Okay stay with me here. So you know that saying that’s like “i can’t see the forest through all these trees” or some shit? It’s basically saying in this context that Heaven and Hell are both made up of individuals. It’s not just a forest without all the goddamn trees right? Which, by that logic, Aziraphale and Crowley are both trees, but you know who else is? Gabriel and Beelzebub. They’re literally just like each other. I don’t even know if that makes any sense but it made sense in my head lmao

fic where after s2e6 crowley finds himself alone and bitter and hell finds itself looking for new management since clearly earth is around to stay, especially with Aziraphale taking charge of things. Who better to do the job than the demon who's been on earth since it all started? Crowley thinks fuck it, maybe he doesn't agree with everything hell says but at least he'll not be alone. MEANWHILE Aziraphale is lonely on heaven, and really Gabriel's job involved a whole lot more paperwork than Saving The World ™️ so was it really worth it to give up what he could've had with Crowley? He heads back to earth only to discover that Crowley's gone back to hell and is currently Very Inaccessible (As most reminders of earth serve as a reminder to Crowley of what he loved most on earth - Aziraphale). The only people who can help are Gabriel and Beelzebub. After Crowley had so easily broken into heaven just by a (not-so) clever disguise and an angel escort, security in Heaven and Hell has been increased significantly. The only way Aziraphale can get to Hell without falling and becoming a demon is by doing it the human way: Sinning and dying. While Gabriel and Beelzebub didn't leave heaven/hell on good terms, they weren't necessarily bad terms either, and both retained portions of their heavenly/hellish powers and by working together similiar to Crowley and Aziraphale had, they are able to strip Aziraphale of his ethereal status and render him human. Aziraphale kills himself (suicide is a sin after all), gets to the underworld, reconnects with past human aquaintances, but doesn't manage to secure a meeting with Crowley because you can't just come to hell in a human state and claim to be the right hand man to the metatron. Aziraphale is sent to be tortured for eternity. There's been a new approach to eternal damnation based around "individualizing and diversifying eternal torment based on the lived experiences of the damned" and Aziraphale is tortured through using what he loves most - Crowley. When your boss's image is used to torture some old guy in hell, obviously demons take note and send Crowley the news. Crowley finds Aziraphale but resurrecting a man to full personhood (never mind angelhood) is out of his paygrade. There is a bittersweet reunion - where Aziraphale is glad Crowley has come to save him, Crowley has reservations because he gave up everything for the angel, and "Forgiveness is more of your thing, angel"). Cue: Angsty discussions etc etc and after discussions with Satan and inspiration from the Greeks, Crowley is allowed to bring Aziraphale back to earth a la Orpheus and Eurydice. or idk. something like that
