It's been a while since I did a watch countdown - so here's a new one!

From the deep vacuum of space to the harsh cold of the lunar surface - these are 10 space watches for any collector.

At #10 the G Gerlach Kosmonauta.

This is a reissue of the watch worn by the first and only Polish Kosmonaut, General Miroslaw Hermaszewski.

For his trip on Soyuz 30 in 1978, Hermaszewski was fitted with the very first Polish digital watch - a cutting-edge Unitra Warel LED. It was made in Poland and used components developed in conjunction with Japanese tech company Sanyo.

The Kosmonauta is a modern take on this watch. It's a reasonably-sized 40mm watch that features a sapphire crystal, and 100-meters of water-resistance. It has two manually-activated functions on the 2 o’clock pusher: press once for time, twice for date. Time-setting is also the same as the original and runs through the recessed crown at 4. G. Gerlach uses its own LED Module-001GG movement and it features a 2-year battery life.

Overall it's a great little slice of 70's culture and a unique space watch reissue that's hard to pass up.

Decorative Sunday

This Sunday we feature woodcuts, photogravure, and specimens from legendary American papermaker Dard Hunter’s A Papermaking Pilgrimage to Japan, Korea and China, published in 1936 in New York by Pynson Printers in a limited edition of 350. Each edition is signed by Hunter and the founder of Pynson Printers, typographer and book designer Elmer Adler. The woodcuts were cut by J. J. Lankes and the photogravure plates were printed by Photogravure & Color Co. of New York. The book was bound by master binder Gerhard Gerlach, a student of lauded German bookbinder Ignatz Wiemeler. The book includes original specimens collected by Hunter.

The first photogravure above (image #2), the frontispience for the book, is a kakemono by an unknown Japanese artist memorializing “Three Gods of Papermaking.” Depicted are Cai Lun, traditionally attributed as the Chinese inventor of paper in the early second century and Damjing (Donchō in Japan), the Korean Buddhist monk that is often credited with introducing paper to Japan in 610. They are shown alongside Seibei Mochizuki, who in 1572 brought papermaking to Nishijima, a mountainous region of Yamanashi Prefecture.

This book is the generous gift of the trusts of Hazel O. Metzner and Delia G. Ovitz, local sisters who worked as Librarians at UWM’s predecessor institution, the Milwaukee State Normal School.

The initial intentions of the so-called municipal flat on Koningsplein by the city architect F.C.J. Dingemans (1905-1961) have come under pressure over the years due to the adjecent highway A2. Now that the tunneling of the A2 traverse has been completed, we have wanted to restore the municipal flat, which has since been declared a ‘National Monument of Younger Architecture’.

Making this national monument more sustainable was an important starting point and through a combination of measures, the Gemeenteflat was even upgraded from energy-label G/H to A.

However, by also making an integrated plan for the surrounding, we have, in combination with the renovation of the adjacent AH Supermarket, a upgrade to the entire area. This was partly achieved through co-design sessions with the environment and stakeholders.

The flat, built in the 1950s, was the first high-rise flat in Maastricht. This differs from the well-known gallery flat because a continuous repetition of the same floor plan is not yet an issue here. The residential building is a total composition with a classic beginning, middle and end, with different building heights and nuances in the plinth and the crowning.

The head and the ‘joints’ of the building were made in brickwork. The intermediate ‘hulls’ are filled in with concrete elements. The original structure and layout of the houses has been kept intact while retaining the remaining authentic elements such as mantelpieces, panel doors and panelling.

With the renovation of the flat in the early 1980s, the original and very refined wooden frames were replaced by coarse plastic frames. The masonry volumes were plastered in a sober brown color, referring to the stone color.

Now the original graphic of the window layouts has been used to restore the flat to its original appearance. It was possible to choose between bringing back the original wood material with a larger dimension (due to the double glazing) or restoring the original dimensions in aluminum. The latter was chosen.

Together with Sikkens, the original color was sought for the painting. Since stucco is closer in texture to concrete than masonry, it was decided to match the paintwork of the stucco surfaces ton-sur-ton with the original concrete color.

This gives the municipal flat a monochrome appearance. The light and shadow effect during the day brings the special plasticity of the building back almost 60 years later.

Wolfgang Gradel neuer Landesvorstand des Hartmannbund LV Bayern

Wolfgang Gradel zum neuen Vorsitzenden gewählt Hartmannbund Bayern fordert erkennbaren Nutzen der Digitalisierung in der Gesundheitsversorgung Im Rahmen der Delegiertenversammlung des Hartmannbund Landesverband Bayern am 18. September im unterfränkischen Niedernberg appellierte die bayerische Staatsministerin für Digitales, Judith Gerlach, in Ihrem Impulsvortrag an die anwesenden Ärztinnen und Ärzte, die Digitalisierung weiter voranzutreiben und ihr mit Offenheit zu begegnen. Der Hartmannbund signalisierte Unterstützung – unter Bedingungen. „Wir befürworten die Digitalisierung, aber der Nutzen muss für alle Beteiligten klar erkennbar sein. Nur dann werden Neuerungen – sowohl vonseiten der Patientinnen und Patienten als auch der Ärzteschaft – angenommen", so Wolfgang Gradel, internistischer Hausarzt in Passau und neu gewählter Landesvorsitzender. Im mit großer Mehrheit angenommenen Leitantrag zur Digitalisierung fordert der Hartmannbund Bayern, sowohl die Ärzteschaft als auch Betroffene an nicht-ärztlichen Stellen (Apotheke, Pflege, etc.) eng in den Ausbau der Telematikinfrastruktur einzubeziehen. „Entwicklungen und Neuerungen dürfen nicht top-down kommen und müssen sich an bereits bestehenden Strukturen orientieren", ergänzt Gradel. Anschließend an den Impulsvortrag entwickelte sich eine lebhafte Diskussion, in der auch auf Risiken und Nebenwirkungen eingegangen wurde. Im nicht-öffentlichen Teil der Versammlung wählten die Delegierten einen neuen Landesvorstand. Neuer Vorsitzender ist Wolfgang Gradel, Facharzt für Innere Medizin und niedergelassenen Hausarzt in Passau. Als Stellvertreter wurden Dr. med. Antje Ehlert, niedergelassene Allgemeinmedizinerin in Senden und Bezirksvorsitzende Schwaben, und Thomas Linke, Facharzt für Innere Medizin und niedergelassener Hausarzt in Niedernberg und Bezirksvorsitzender Unterfranken, gewählt. Gradel dankte seinem Vorgänger Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang G.
