TTEOTM Easter Eggs Part 3 - Costume and Makeup Details
I love beautiful costumes, but even more when they tell a story! Here are a few of my observations. Did you spot anything else? (Spoilers!)
(1) The two outfits Ye Xiwu gifted Tantai Jin are both quilted. The purple costume is particularly unusual in that it's constructed like a blanket. In contrast, all his clothing in the hostage prince arc are not quite thick enough for Sheng kingdom's harsh winters. Ye Xiwu is literally bringing warmth to his life.
(2) TTJ and YXW wear similar costumes in their two love scenes - (1) Ep 2 - YXW's imagination of the drugged affair which led to their marriage and (2) Ep 39, where they finally consummated their marriage on screen. YXW wears the same pink costume. TTJ in different but identical-looking mustard yellow costumes.
(3) Some viewers have criticized Ye Xiwu for not taking off hair accessories before going to bed, chalking it up to lazy filmmaking. This is not necessarily the case. In ancient China, upper class women did sleep with their hair-do and manage to keep elaborate designs in tack. How? By resting her neck, not her head, on the pillow.
Ye Xiwu / Li Susu does go without hair accessories in a few occasions: when she is traveling, ill, depressed, and in mourning. It is most likely a creative choice to create a contrast between moments where her character is in control and powerful vs. vulnerable.
(4) All of Tantai Jin's female lieutenants wear red, from Pianran (after she starts working for him) to Siying and Monu. In fact, so does Tantai Minglang's lieutenant Fuyu. Red appears to be the career woman's color in this world!
(5) After Mingye falls in love with Sangjiu, he adds the red waist scarf belt that's part of his wedding dress on top of his normally blue outfit.
(6) The costume that Cang Jiumin (left) wears when refining the Dragonheart Shield echoes Mingye's costume (right) through the red/blue colors and collar design, reinforcing the connection between the two characters.
(7) The costumes in Bo're dream hint at the characters' true forms:
Mingye (dragon): dragonscale armour & patterned clothing
Sangjiu & Sangyou (clams): pearls & shell motifs
Tianhuan (snake): gold serpent hair crown & bracelets
(8) Throughout the drama, only characters in the Upper Immortal Realm go full Dunhuang Feitian style, characterized by bandeaus, scarves, layers of drapery, sleeveless (similar to Indian clothing).
The style is used in formal occasions or to confer power or godliness. For example, Sangjiu goes Dunhuang with sleeveless draping outfits at her wedding and after she goes dark.
Similarly, when Susu and Tantai Jin become gods at the finale, they also take on a new Dunhuang-style outfit. In fact, the multi-color drapery of Tantai Jin's outfit seem to be an amalgamation of the fabric used in the twelve gods' outfits.
(9) Members of the Moon Tribe all wear long wavy hair, chunky metal and coin ornaments, and hair braiding.
Tantai Jin follows the dress code when he stays with the Moon Tribe before entering the spiritual dimension.
Guess who also loves his wavy hair, metallic accessories, and leather? Of course it's the Ancient Devil God, again reminding viewers of his connection to the tribe.
Bonus: Luo Yunxi mentioned in an interview that his characters (hostage prince, emperor, Mingye, Devil Gods) all have different hairpieces/wigs. He had to take off and reglue his hair between scenes.

Further history of Goguryeo (WS100)
[With the parallel account in LS54]
[WS100]
Gong's great grandson Weigong likewise could see from birth. People considered him to resemble his great grandfather Gong, and for that reason named him as Weigong. In Gaogouli they refer to resembling each other as “Wei”. Weigong likewise was brave and strong, and at ease with bow and horse. In the middle of Wei's Zhengshi [240 – 249], he entered to rob Anping in Liaoxi, and was routed by the Inspector of You province, Muqiu Jian.
His great-great-grandson was Yifuli. Li's son was Zhao. In the time of Emperor Lie [329 – 337], he and the Murong clan attacked and struck each other. 4th Year of Jianguo [341 AD], Murong Yuanzhen led the multitudes to invade them. He entered through the southern pass, fought at Mudi and greatly routed Zhao's army. He exploited the victory for a long advance, and thereupon entered Wandu. Zhao fled and ran away on a single horse. Yuanzhen dug up Zhao's father's tomb, and carried off his corpse, he also carried off his mother and wife, precious treasure, men and women, more than 50 000 people. He burnt his palace houses, destroyed Wandu City, and turned back. Afterwards, Zhao dispatched envoys to come to court. They were hindered and cut off by robbers and foes, and were unable to arrive from [him]. Zhao later was killed by Baiji [Baekje].
In the time of Shizu, Zhao's great-grandson Lian first dispatched an envoy to [the General who] Calms the East to offer a petition to tribute the things of the region, and also to request the state's taboo [characters]. Shizu was delighted with their earnest sincerity. He decreed to send down the imperial lineage's external names and taboos to their state. He dispatched the Outer Staff Cavalier Attendant Gentleman Li Ao to designate Lian Chief Controller of the Various Army Affairs of Liaohai, General who Conquers the East, Acting Central Gentleman Commander who Protects the Eastern Barbarians, State-Founding Duke of Liaodong commandery, and King of Gaogouli.
Ao arrived at his residence at Pingrang [i.e. Pyongyang] City, and inquired into their region's affairs. He stated: South-east of the Liao, more than a thousand li, east until Zha City, south until the Lesser Sea, north until old Fuyu. The population and households has tripled since the time of Former Wei. Their land is 2 000 li from east to west, and more than 1 000 li from north to south. The people have all sprung from the land. They go along with the mountains and valleys, and live there. Fore clothes they use cloth, silk and hides. The native farmland is meagre and poor. Their silk-work and farming are insufficient to provide for themselves, and for that reason their people are modest with food and drink. Their customs are joyful [?], they are fond of singing and dancing. At night, men and women crowd together for entertainment without ranking of the noble and the humble. However when cleaning and purifying they enjoy themselves. Their king is fond of arranging palace buildings. His named officials have the titles of Yeshe, Taishe, Great Brother, and Junior Brother. On their heads they wear twisted style, shaped like a conical cap, and on the sides they insert bird feathers, noble and humble each proportionally. If standing up, they turn back with folded hands. When they kneel to do obeisance, they trail one foot. They travel on foot like they are running. They always use the 10th Month to worship Heaven, and within the state there is a great assembly. At their public gatherings, their clothes and dress area always brocaded and embroidered, with gold and silver as decorations. They are fond of squatting and crouching. When eating they use trays and low tables. They produce a three foot [tall] horse, they state it was originally ridden by Zhumeng, and the horse breed as a result has come down [from it?]. After, tribute was sent soon after each other, annually they delivered 200 jin yellow gold and 400 jin white silver.
At the time Feng Wentong [the final ruler of Northern Yan] led the multitudes to run to them [in 436 AD], Shizu dispatched the Cavalier in Regular Attendance Feng Bo with a decree to Lian ordering him to send off Wentong. Lian sent up a letter claiming he undertook to serve the royal reforms together with Wentong, and in the end did not sent him off. Shizu was furious, and wished to go and chastise him. Hte King of Leping, Pi, and others debated waiting and launch it later. Shizu therefore desisted, and Wentong also soon after was killed by Lian.
Later Empress Dowager Wenming, as Xianzu's Six Palces were not yet made ready, counselled Lian to make him recommend his daughter. Lian offered a petition, stating his daughter was already married, and beseech to use his younger brother's daughter in response to the directive. The imperial court allowed it, and therefore dispatched the King of Anle, Zhen, the Master of Writing, Li Fu, and others to reach the border and send off the gifts.
Lian was tricked by the advise of his left and right, stating that the imperial court formerly had intermarried with the Feng clan, but then not much later wiped out their state. The lessons of Yin were not remote, they ought to just then conveniently decline it. Lian thereupon sent up a letter falsely claiming the girl had died. The imperial court suspected him of concealing trickery, and again dispatched the Provisional Cavalier in Regular Attendance Cheng Jun to sternly call him to account, and if the girl really was dead, attend to select in replacement [someone] gentle of his lineage. Lian stated that if the Son of Heaven forgave his previous errors, he would respectfully undertake to serve the decree. It happened that Xianzu collapsed, and he therefore desisted.
[LS54]
Yiyimo died, his son Weigong was installed. Weigong was brave and strong, at ease with saddles and horses, and good at shooting and hunting. Wei's 2nd Year of Jingchu [238 AD], they dispatched the Grand Tutor, Sima King Xuan [i.e. Sima Yi], to lead the multitudes and chastise Gongsun Yuan. Weigong dispatched the Master of Account and Great Assigner in command of a thousand troops to help the army. 3rd Year of Zhengshi [242 AD], Weigong robbed Xi'an and Jiaping. 5th Year [244 AD], the Insepctor of You province, Muqiu Jian, in command of ten thousand people, set out from Xuantu to chastise Weigong. Weigong in command of 20 000 foot and horse confronted the army, and there was a great battle at Feiliu. Weigong fled in defeat. Jian's army pursued until Xian. They hung up their chariots, bound their horses, and climbed Wandu Mountain. They slaughtered those that were in the capital, the cut off heads and captives numbered more than ten thousand. Weigong only brought along his wife and children to run far away. 6th Year [245 AD], Jian again chastised him. Weigong lightly brought along the various Assigners to run to Woju. Jian sent General Wang Qi to pursue him. He cut across Woju for more than a thousand li, arrived in the southern regions of Sushen, and carved a rock to record his merits. He again reached Wandu Mountain, inscribed the walls of Bunai, and then turned back. After that, they again communicated with the Central Xia.
In the chaos of Jin's Yongjia era [307 – 313], the Xianbei Murong Hui occupied Daji City in Changli, Emperor Yuan conferred on him Inspector of Ping province. The King of Gouli, Yifuli, frequently robbed Liaodong, and Hui was not able to put it in order.
Fuli died, his son Liu was installed in replacement. Emperor Kang's 1st Year of Jianyuan [343 AD], Murong Hui's son Huang led troops to invade him. Liu fought with him, was greatly defeated, and ran and fled on a single horse. Huang exploited the victory to pursue until Wandu, burnt his palace houses, and seized more than 50 000 boys to return home.
Xiaowu's 10th Year of Taiyuan [385 AD], Gouli attacked Liaodong and Xuantu commanderies. Murong Chui of Later Yan dispatched his younger brother Nong to invade Gouli, he restored the two commanderies. Chui died, his son Bao was installed. He used the King of Gouli, An, as Shepherd of Ping province, and ennobled him King of the two states of Liaodong and Daifang. An started to set up the offices of Senior Clerk, Marshal, and Army Advisor, and afterwards roughly had Liaodong commandery.
Arriving at his grandson, Gaolian, he in the middle of Emperor An of Jin's Yixi era [405 – 418], first offered a petition to exchange tribute and duties.
[SuiS081]
Gaoli's ancestor sprung from Fuyu. The King of Fuyu once obtained the daughter of Hebo, and following that had her shut up inside a room. She was followed by the sun's light, which shone on her. She felt it and consequently became pregnant. She gave birth to a large, and there was a boy who broke the shell and came out. His name was Zhumeng. Fuyu's ministers, since Zhumeng had not been born by a person, all requested to kill him. The king did not heed them. Growing up, because he accompanied on hunts, he caught normally a large amount, and they again requested to kill him. His mother reported it to Zhumeng, and Zhumeng abandoned Fuyu and fled south-east. He came to one great river, deep and impossible to cross. Zhumong said:
I am truly the maternal grandson of Hebo, and the son of the son. Now there are difficulties, and pursuing troops are about to catch up. How about getting to cross?
And so fish and turtles piled up and completed a bridge, and Zhumong thereupon crossed. The pursuing riders did not mange to ferry over, and turned back.
Zhumeng established a state which he himself titled Gaogouli, and he used Gao as his clan name. When Zhumeng died, his son Luda inherited. Arriving at his grandson Molai, he raised troops and thereupon annexed Fuyu. Arriving at his descendant Weigong, in the middle of Wei's Zhengshi era [240 – 249], he entered to rob Xi'anping, Guanqiu Jian resisted and routed him. Weigong's great-great-grandson's son was called Emperor Zhaolie. He was routed by the Murong clan, who consequently entered Wandu and burnt his palace houses, took a great amount of plunder, and turned back. Emperor Zhaolie was later killed by Baiji. His great-grandson Lian dispatched envoys to Later Wei.

I was gonna compose a Sifeng Appreciation post but I like him so much it can’t be told in one post! 😂
So here instead part 2 of the Chinese Yaoguai(mythological beings):
"Demons", Gods, and In-betweens in the Series: Love and Redemption (Part 2)
To read-> Part 1
Today’s post again features mythical beings mostly from the Classic of Mountains and Seas山海经, written sometime between 4th and 5th century BC. The shows’ ‘demons’ seem to take considerable inspirations from this ancient book. Additionally some are from official Jin[266~420], Tang[618~907] and Song[960~1279] dynasties history records.
祝馀 the Zhu Yu plant
First appearance 山海经·南山经
In the seaside “Bird” mountain (range) there is a 招摇 mountain. On this 招摇 mountain there are many gold, jade, Osmanthus trees and, other interesting plants and animals. Among them is the Zhuyu plant which has bluish flowers and can quench hanger effectively.
In the show Zhuyu has the appearance of some regular grass with special delicious flavor that only grows in a specific mountain area called “Ocean Bowl”. The Ao Yin from last post drives Quru Birds to collect this grass as an ingredient for some evil concoction. Later elder Lingshi also tried to make that evil concoction but failed.
迷毂 Mi Gu
First appearance 山海经·南山经
On the same 招摇 mountain, there is also a tree called Mi Gu. It is said to have a wheel like appearance with black tree pattern, it’s flowers radiating lights in all directions(or maybe it describes the shape of the flower). It is said if one wears this plant one will not get lost.
Interestingly, people have speculated that this tree is actually mulberry(although it’s the fruit that radiating not the flowers)
or Albizia julibrissin.
In the show the Migu tree was described very differently. It doesn't seem to have the radiating flowers and no mention of the “GPS” ability. There is also a man-eating Tagara vine that grows on it and bears blood fruit that were also used in the aforementioned evil concoction. However I cannot find source of the vine, it is probably made up by imagination without a definite inspirational source.
不死树 immortal tree
First appearance 山海经·大荒南经
This immortal tree is said to grow on the north side of the godly mountain of 昆仑Kunlun in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. There isn’t any further description of it there.
In the show we didn’t actually see the tree, but its bark is the material of the Lover’s Curse Mask. The bark of the immortal tree is said to be incredibly strong yet the Mask was shattered by our protagonist with one strike of her legendary sword “Dingkun.” And the bark once planted in soil and watered with ‘spiritual energy’ can grow a ‘heart lantern’ if the planter sincerely loves another.
地狼 Di Lang, or Ground Wolf
First appearance Jin Dynasty 266 to 420AD
It was mentioned in Jin and Song history records that some people discovered two dogs underground and later a powerful man of status would die.
The Dilang in our show is already in human form and works for the leader of Tianxu Tang. He impregnated the wife of a major sect leader and used her to gain access to the ‘spirit keys’ that was locked in a vault in the Fuyu Sect. Later he discarded that woman after she is no longer useful to him. What a scumbag! (although less of a one compared to other scumbags in the show.) Dilang died saving his boss. Interestingly he seemed to be the only one who is truly loyal to the Tianxu Tang leader and this boss who is ruthless and evil with everybody else seemed to actually care about Dilang, at least to some extent.
无支歧 Wu Zhi Qi
Likely 山海经. It was recorded in a history book from Tang Dynasty that that 山海经 described such a giant white water monkey called Wu Zhi Qi that was locked up in some mountain for causing havocs.
There was so many stories that seem to derive from the original description(ever heard of monkey king? Most-likely derived from him), but basically the most credible mention is from the Tang history book that mentioned a record in 山海经 with just a few words. There are countless later stories that added to the fable of Wu Zhiqi that adds to his powerful havoc-causing wildness lol. I really like the Wu Zhiqi in LnD. He was described as a completely free-spirit and a man of 有情有义, meaning he values personal ties and is a man of honor, which is in accordance to the show’s theme.
He wouldn’t return Zihu’s feelings at first partially because he didn’t want to be tied down too much due to his free nature, but I do believe he and Zihu also have a happy ever after as indicated in the last episode.
紫狐 Zihu, or purple fox
There is a long and well-spread history of Fox Spirit from Chinese mythology. Mostly they are ordinary foxes that gained higher spiritual status by cultivation or luck, and some inherently magical foxes like the nigh-tailed fox also appeared in the Classic of Mountains and Seas山海经. In Chinese folk culture the fox spirits can range from mischievous, benevolent to down-right horrible. The good ones are called 狐仙 fox-immortal/transcend and are worshiped by the common folks. By the time of Qing dynasty they were described as changing into pretty seductress to marry mortal man or collect their ahem, energy for cultivation. However this cultivation method is not their unique ability because other cultivators including humans and other non-human beings that gained human form can do it as well(sometimes in evil ways). The Fox Spirit concept travelled to surrounding Asian nations in variations. The most famous is perhaps the Japanese fox-‘demon’ that possessed Naruto, which obviously is more akin to the earlier era powerful mythological beast variant.
In Love and Redemption, the purple fox seems to be already some kind of magical fox that later gained human form by cultivation. Like traditions, she also sucked energy from men to accelerate her cultivation, although she just sucked a little from each one to cause no harm. She is the second ‘demon’ that our protagonists met that made them question their concept of right and wrong, when it turns out Zihu didn’t actually kill anyone and her harem of men actually worship her because she was teaching them how to cultivate (not by sucking energy lol). This is like how fox spirits are seen in folk culture both as seducers and transcends. In our show she nearly captured all the men in protagonists’ group as her concubines. Luckily Xuanji and Ting Nu saved them from that.

Till the End of the Moon - Episode 21
Susu just arrived to the camp where Tantai Jin is located now. I can’t wait, like I said last time, to discover what their reunion will look like. So without further do, let’s just discover that. I hope no drama lama.
Pianran tells Susu where are Tantai Jin’s quarters. She says she can only take one glance at him and then she’ll send her back to the capital. Meanwhile, the fox lady is going to see Ye Qingyu. She also teaches some manners to a few monsters. Susu quickly finds Tantai Jin and she’s relieved to see that he’s doing fine. Then she feels something on her head: specifically a crow, which scares her and she shouts, drawing Tantai Jin’s attention. The crow reports he saw that demon that made it send so many letters. Tantai Jin is so happy.
Susu ran away to a river border. Tantai Jin goes to her and when she turns around, explaining why she came and not to punish Pianran, he hugs her thus creating one more nail. I’m not sure if she’s happier about the nail or the hug huhu. Then he says she smells bad haha. I mean after two weeks of walking she must. They were matching outfits. He’s so happy that they’re matching and he carries her because her feet hurt. Though they did a very bad job a make up for her blisters. It doesn’t look like it at all. He puts ointment on for her. She gets all shy and rushes out first after saying she feels all better. That was soooo cute. I liked it so much.
So it’s taking too long for Fuyu to prepare the puppet army, so the king urges her to find a faster way. Now they will sacrifice 9 pairs of boys and girls, a loved one from Tantai Jin and they need the bones of a close relative to kill him. But it’s risky.
Susu got lost in the camp. Tantai Jin tells her that whenever she feels lost, she can follow the golden crow. She plays a little hard to get, saying that since he’s not injured anymore, she’ll leave the next morning. He tells her she can’t go anywhere before her feet are healed. She makes him promise to never leave again without saying goodbye. For the first time, she isn’t overjoyed that the pearl is acting up and she leaves first to go to bed. Tantai Jin is feeling somewhat uneasy. Pianran tries to kick Susu out of her bed, but she says she’s playing hard to get like she told her. Pianran asks her again if she does like Tantai Jin and this time, she doesn’t deny it as fast.
Nian Baiyu tells Tantai Jin that the Sheng king stole the remains of his mother. When Susu wakes up, Tantai Jin is leaving camp. Pianran can’t tell Susu what is happening. Instead of staying put, she follows them. Ah, no. She went to see Xiao Lin. She tells him that Tantai Jin left the camp. Xiao Lin orders her to go back before Tantai Jin learns she was there. Meanwhile Tantai Jin deals with the king. He kills every one and makes the king bow to his mother. But he’s pretending to comply and throws her urn on the ground, shattering it to pieces, spilling her ashes under the falling rain. The king has gone crazy. Yingxin stabs Tantai Jin. He kills her to free her. Seems like the crazy king is out for now. Panic in the palace. Someone tries to rob Ye Bingchang and she uses her maid as a shield to protect herself, leading to her death. Xiao Lin’s soldiers come to try and stop Tantai Jin. He doesn’t kill the guards. Ye Bingchang rushes to seek safety from Tantai Jin because he is the most powerful man. She plays the card of the weak lady to ask him to take her along with him. He agrees? I find it quite strange that he would pity her.
Susu has been pacing around waiting for Tantai Jin to come back. He knows she went to see Xiao Lin because of the crow. It’s a little creepy to keep spying on your wife through a bird. Now he thinks she betrayed him because of Xiao Lin. Maybe that’s why he took Ye Bingchang with him. He totally ignores Susu and lets Ye Bingchang follow him. Susu thinks that he likes her.
Pianran is happy because now that Sheng is defeated, maybe Tantai Jin is going to release her. She also tells Susu to be careful because he came back with a beautiful woman. Pianran is worried about Qingyu. Susu wonders what happened and what made Tantai Jin that way. She goes to see him and he asks her if she waited for him all along. She doesn’t answer and only ask what happened. This is a red alert! Miscommunication incoming! He tells her he went to the palace to kill people, the king. Yingxin. He thanks her for tipping Xiao Lin, since he was so close to kill him. She says she regrets being stupid enough to want to stay by his side, that you can’t change one’s nature. He’s definitely hurt, but this time around I can’t pity him. He kind of pushed her to say such things. He’s good at sabotaging his chances of happiness. He says he doesn’t care who serves him and tells her to leave, resulting in the nails to resorb and he ends up in a bad state after she leaves. The sword Yingxin used to stab him was cursed which doesn’t help with his state.
Painran goes to visit Ye Qingyu, but he’s with Ye Bingchang. When they come out, Ye Bingchang seems to recognize Pianran. I guess the person who guessed she stole her love string was right.
Tantai Minglang doesn’t care that Sheng was defeated. He has bigger plans.
Tantai Jin sees Susu everywhere now that she’s gone. Ye Bingchang tries to see Tantai Jin and even tries bribing Nian Baiyu. I have to say that I love Nian Baiyu and I’m always super afraid that something bad will happen to him. She wants to thank and repay him. He seems rather uncomfortable. He tells her to keep him company and cook for him. She thinks he still has feelings for her. I think he wants to rub it on Ye Xiwu’s nose.
And this is it. Even though I didn’t like the results of the fight between Susu and Tantai Jin, it was one of my favorite moments of this episode because of the amazing chemistry between the two main leads, but also thanks to their unbelievably good acting skills. I hope they can reconcile soon and that they’ll yeet Ye Bingchang out of their life.
