Artem tríes to wipe away the blood on their face but all they really manage to do is smear it a bit since their nose was still bleeding. Deciding that was futile they instead move the synthesizer to the center of the cage. They take a deep breath before they begin to play Goodbye to a World by Porter Robinson.
The somber tune builds slowly into a crescendo that is met by operatic vocals from Artem. They think of their children, their boyfriend, a life they might not get to lead. They wonder if this is how their mother felt when she realized she was going to die. They channel all their fear and worry and regret and longing into those melodic tones. Just in case. Just in case they had to say goodbye
“Thank you, I'll say goodbye soon
Though its the end of the world
Don't blame yourself now”
Tears well up in their eyes, they must look a mess but they still look to the camera and smile. They know their kids will watch this if the worst happens.
“And if its true
I will surround you and give life to a world
That's our own”
Artem projects love into the words for their children. Blood tears and love blend. A charge in the air.
“Thank you, I'll say goodbye now
Though its the end of the world
Don't blame yourself
And if its true
I will surround you and give life to a world
That's our own”
As the rhythm dips miles away Benny, Pete, and Brie feel a warmth settle around them. Selene perks up.
As Artem rocks the synth they think about what would happen with the kids. This isn’t a goon related incident…. They wonder if Beau would care for them. If they would still be a family… fuck. They aren’t ready to let go! Love, blood, tears. Even if the worst happens. They aren’t ready to let go. A charge fills the air again.
“Thank you, I'll say goodbye soon
Though its the end of the world, don't blame yourself now”
The rhythm builds again and Artem uses that energy.
“And if its true
I will surround you and give life to a world”
The stain glass shattered, Artem continues to play but the charge in the air is lost.
“Oh” they project as much confusion as they can manage.

sometimes I see David Tennant's face in Doctor Who as he monologues about time travel/immortality/the eternal loneliness and I go...that's him. that's my rotten lil guy. my wretched wreck of a dude. wreckage in humanoid form. the lonely divine corrupted by himself forgiven by himself made by himself made by his companions made by the universe. horrible and horrifying and far too human and not human enough. the worst thing to ever happen to so many (Martha, Adelaide, Astrid, everyone else who flashed through that whole montage thanks to Davros). a corrupter. a corruption. a cleansing. a man carved out of grief and love and pathos and hatred and grudges and forgiveness who can only make the worst decisions with the best, most selfish of intentions. a man who loved until he lost everything. a man, more than any other doctor, who should never be left alone, and yet he dies alone, with the shortest regeneration speech of any doctor. desperately lonely, desperately tragic, a disaster of a man who is too careless with everything and everyone around him.
And yet I care about him so much, because he is also the man who at the end of it all, after he lost everyone and everything he held dear, after he lost rose and donna and sarah jane and jack and martha and mickey left him and he was more alone than he's ever been, he does the right thing. the kind thing. he stops the time lords from descending on the earth. he once again gives up his people because he understands that the Time Lords Victorious cannot and should not ever be the way to go. he steps in and he saves wilfred mott. he lets himself become the doctor once again. he doesn't want to go, but instead of taking that one final step into godhood, he gives his next self a chance at being a better doctor than he ever could be.

btw it's true that Hiram only ever seems to pay attention to information and not to people's lives, but that doesn't mean he's not interested in knowing how they're doing.
Pre-abstraction Hiram was a caring person forced by the circumstances to be distant and cold to survive the horrors (the general fl eldritchness and victorian society at the same time), the abstraction just sped up the process.
Post-abstraction Hiram is a cold and distant person who had to relearn how to care about others. He still has a long way to go but he's doing fairly well, even if he's also constantly playing his usual metaphorical 5d chess game with everything and everyone. This of course makes it difficult for people to tell if he's being nice or if he has a hidden agenda.

I would like to thank Stephen Paul, official One Piece translator of Viz Media, for giving us this line of dialogue. The "... lol" caught me so off guard I couldn't help but laugh.

everyone has those authors that you would be so unhinged about if they were introduced in bsd right?
mine are: emily dickinson (it might be too late for her but I’m in denial), franz kafka, and any german author but especially goethe (c’mon asagiri give us the rest of the transcendents) and schiller. I’m not able to describe how unhinged I would be if any of them get introduced

“I just don’t understand how the timeline has shifted so far so fast… we danced around each other for ages… Mike never kidnapped me and he certainly wasn’t the reason the kids ended up moving in…”
Artems stares at their younger alternate in the scrying pool.
“What changed?”

There’s an increasingly familiar buzzing feeling along their scalp as Art rests a hand on their head, though it’s not as all encompassing as it used to be. So when Art starts cleaning the table up Artem isnt as distracted by the action as they would have been a few months ago.
They notice Art cleaning things up without the aid of magic, but they also see the obvious signs of verbal shutdown so they let their other self clean up and simmer down.
:fancy some tea?
[@whispersofalostfuture]
:sure, I’ll bring my own blend though

The thing about the Rise Anniversary Comic is it has two ideas, neither of which are bad and both of which would be fine for a goodbye comic, but they shouldn't be on top of one another.
First, we have the future timeline, which is no longer the apocalypse. Good for them! It shows us that the apocalypse truly was averted and gives us a better future to imagine when we think of their adult selves. It shows us that the turtles get to grow up, get to stay together as they do, and gives us a glimpse at who they become. Played well, interactions with their earlier selves would be a fun way to show how they've grown and changed.
Second, we have Splinter's death. Which is sad, but also fitting for a goodbye. We see the ending of the turtles' complicated relationship with their Dad, we see how they healed as a family, and we see that there are further adventures in store as he characteristically drops a cliffhanger at the last moment.
But the way it's done... the future timeline becomes a weird framing device for Splinter's death, throwing a lot of information and cameos at us that aren't at all relevant to the story once we go back in time. The future timeline takes up space that could have been used to show us how the turtles felt about Splinter's illness and lead up to his death more organically than future!Leo suddenly saying "he's been sick and he's dying now". And in the other direction the plot with Splinter's death means the interactions between Leo and future!Leo are rushed. Leo finding his past self annoying could be an interesting beat - if the poor kid had had time to say more than two sentences! Instead it just seems like Leo is mean to himself for no reason and then his past self doesn't react to it and they all move on.
