Furry Day/ Feast of the Apparition of St Michael

Today is Furry Day in Helston, Cornwall. Characterised by the Furry Dance, the day represents genuine continuity, possibly going back to Celtic times, with the name ‘Furry’ possibly derived from the Latin word feria, meaning holy day or the old Celtic word feur, meaning festival. The dance itself is a joyous affair in which the townsfolk dress up in costume and adorn themselves and Helston’s buildings with greenery, symbolising the returning summer. The procession is populated by stock characters from the medieval Mummers’ Plays, including St George and the dragon, St Michael, Robin Hood, Little John and Friar Tuck. The dance takes men, women and children down the main street, but also in and out of as many houses as they can manage, to bring good luck to the households. It ends with a general dance to which visitors are welcome.
Today is also the Feast of the Apparition of St Michael. A local legend explains the name of Helston as resulting from a fight between Satan and St Michael, during which the devil hurled a huge stone from Hell itself at the archangel, which landed on the settlement: Hell’s Stone has been the resultant name of the town ever since.
